Afternoon Delight on the Deck

Recipe by Tara Fox Hall
Promise Me Series Book #9 Dark Solace

There are more than a few delectable ingredients to make the perfect outdoor barbeque not only smoking hot, but also an utterly unforgettable frolic. Think there are too many dishes on the menu for to enjoy? Not so! The more varied the spread, the more different tastes there are to savor. Here, let me tempt you with a taste. I’m sure there’s something on my menu to arouse your appetite.

Non-vegetarian Spiedie Kabobs:

Take…

1 tall, dark, and handsome vampire unwilling to relent on his blood privileges…or his right to physical possession.

1 smoldering blond country woman torn between the life she’s been forced to live and the life she wants

1 very jealous blue-eyed, blond, and muscular werecougar, determined to hold onto the woman he loves at all costs

1 seductive yet haunted golden-eyed vampiric devil of a man, eager to make amends for past transgressions with both his body and soul

1 down and dirty weresnake with a wicked sense of humor, a taste for violence, and an insatiable sex drive.

Add for accompaniment

... 1 male newborn baby werecougar, innocent and trusting

2 half vampire-half human children, the first of their kind in existence

1 female teen werecougar dangerously pushing boundaries in her rebellion

1 faerie-demon mixed blood with cherrywood eyes, enough unrequited love to drown in, and a flair for darker sorcery

1 pure demon of legendary power, bound by his family ties to help against his evil nature

and a ruthless mortal man with a legion of weresoldiers, seething with the need for revenge and more than enough magic to complete his ambition to destroy them all

Season liberally with the mystic bond of shared dreams, the unbearable tension of long-denied passion, and one man’s dying prayer to find his soul mate before his last breath.

Sweet Cherry Pie:

Add together edgy conversation full of double entendres, the shuddering thrill of cool night air breathing lightly over flushed sweaty flesh, and the satiating release of climax (this ingredient may be doubled or even tripled, at your discrimination).

Whipped Cream:
Add the gentle tenderness of true love and deep affection, and beat on high until the sound of soft sighs and moans fill the air. Beat an additional thirty seconds or as needed, until the groans become screams. Then taper off carefully for a few seconds before removing the mixer from the bowl.

Serve immediately, while fresh and dripping with juice. Just be careful of picnic invaders, who may seek to grab your slice for their own!

Set the table in our world, with enough real-life references to tempt your imagination. Light some lawn torches, put on some music with a beat to move to, and keep the cooler well stocked, so you can party until dawn.

Taste Test
I took a deep breath, steeling myself for what I needed to say. “You asked me once if I was afraid because I wasn’t enough of a woman to hold on to your love. Do you remember that?”

Anguish replaced Devlin’s hopeful expression. “Sar, please—”

“Do you?” I said sharply.

“Yes, of course. I’m so sorry—”

“I was afraid,” I said, wiping more tears out of my eyes. “I have always been afraid of that. I never thought Theo or Danial would grow bored with me, or that I wouldn’t be enough for them.” I took a deep, deep breath, and let it out. “But I doubted myself with you. I told myself repeatedly not to get too attached to you, because you weren’t going to be interested in me for long. Because I know in my heart that I’m not enough to hold onto someone like you—”

Devlin laughed quietly.

I shot him an angry look. “Why are you laughing?”

“Because I was afraid that I was not enough for you,” he said bitterly. “Not good enough, not kind enough, not loving enough, not decent enough.” He brought my hand to his lips. “Perhaps we were both wrong.”

“You’re a king among men and vampires,” I said in exasperation, pulling my hand out of his grasp “You’re a dream come to life, Devlin.”

Devlin grasped my hand and yanked me forward into his arms. “That is where you’re wrong, Sarelle. I am not God, or a king, or even a dream. I’m just a man who wants to be loved.” He touched his lips to mine, brushing lightly. “A man that wants your love.”

With Theo facing deadly odds in a fight to the death, Sar makes a pact with Lash, agreeing to give Devlin another chance in return for Theo’s life. Reforging her relationship with her handsome vampiric lover mends old wounds, even as Theo moves to regain Sar just for himself. But Devlin’s old enemy Ulysses appears, taking Sar prisoner and burning Devlin badly in a surprise attack. Rescued at the eleventh hour by Lash, Sar nurses Dev back to health, Theo bristling at a distance. Yet Lash’s own day of reckoning is here as his long life ebbs to a finale, leaving Sar to face the decision of offering him salvation, knowing that the price is her own humanity.
