Book Review: Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy #1) by Ilona Andrews

Burn for Me (Hidden Legacy #1)
by Ilona Andrews
ebook, 400 pages
Published October 28th 2014 by Avon
#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire…

Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile case. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.

Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run or surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

Have you ever read a book by super couple Ilona Andrews? If you have then here is my review for you: Blah, blah, blah, go read this, you’ll love it. Plain and simple.

If you’ve never read them, because you “like PNR not urban fantasy” then now is your chance. Burn For Me has all the world building fun of a UF with a good dose of PNR added. The Katie Daniels series is a great mix of UF/PNR but leans more to the UF side. Hidden Legacy is also a great mix of UF/PNR but leans more to the PNR side.

Ilona Andrews flat out knows how to create and tell a story. Burn For Me has an eclectic cast of secondary characters that add humor and depth to the main ones. Nevada Baylor lives and works with a loving and loyal group of family and friends. That’s right! A UF heroine that is emotionally happy and well adjusted. The family detective business has gone through some hard times but at the start of the book they are making it work. It is when trouble comes knocking on their door that things start to go wrong in Nevada’s life. That trouble comes in the form of Mad Rogan. A sexy as hell hardass/headcase, throw in some antihero, type of guy. He is the one who’s had a crappy life and became cynical and jaded. He is by no means one of those tortured heroes that needs the love of a good woman though.

I would love to visit team Ilona Andrews’ imagination. Talk about an adventure! But you would need to carry a bazooka or something, just in case. They’ve created another believable and unique world where magical abilities dictate your social and economic status. The fun comes when someone goes against the system and you must fight for the survival of those you love as well as yourself.

Not going to go into plot. You can read the blurb for that. If you are looking for page turning action, suspense and a slow simmering romance about to explode at any moment, then give this one a read.

A note about the cover...don't judge this book by it. The authors have very little say, or none, on the cover a publisher picks. Avon, bless your heart, I know it had to be a PNR cover, but this book deserves a little bit better ;)

Fun quotes:

Wouldn't that be just the icing on top of this Cake of Awful?

“Mom?” Mother turned to Grandmother.
“What?”
“She’s going to lunch with her kidnapper!”
“Take a picture for me,” Grandma said.

“If I could, I would punch today right in the face.”

About the authors:
Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. author2sm“Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Oregon with their two children, three dogs and a cat. They have co-authored two series, the bestselling urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

    1. Me too! Are you more interested in the urban fantasy action or the PNR action? I'm a world building fan so I am looking forward to learning more about that, but I don't mind a little hot sexual tension either ;)

  2. I am torn between wanting the next Kate book or the next Nevada book sooner. The end is in sight for Kate and I want to savor the anticipation, and Nevada's world is new and shiny and waiting to be explored... but then again, KATE and CURRAN... Aghhh!

    1. I feel you! The next Kate Daniels novel could be a lot of fun considering where the last book left off .

  3. I haven't gotten around to reading this one yet, although it's near the top of my list. As a long time Ilona Andrews fan, I'm well-versed in their awesomeness, so the blah blah part of your review was indeed all I needed to know. Hehe! Soon my precious...
