"Enjoying pain with your pleasure is something you either get, or you don't. If you get it, then you don't really need it explained, because you know how good it feels, and if you don't get it then no amount of talking is going to convince you it makes sense."

But sometimes you have to explain the unexplainable, especially if the love of your life needs to understand, or she'll leave you. Jason Schuyler is one of Anita Blake's best friends and favorite werewolves, with benefits. J.J. is his lady love, an old flame from childhood who dances at one of the top ballet companies in New York. She's accomplished, beautiful, and she's crazy about him, too. Neither of them wants to be monogamous, so what could go wrong?

J.J. is enthusiastically bisexual, with an emphasis on the female side of things. She plans to keep sleeping with women, because Jason can't meet that need, just like she can't meet Jason's need for rough sex and bondage. J.J. doesn't understand why Jason isn’t content to go elsewhere for a need she can’t fulfill, so Jason asks Anita to help him explain.

Anita is having her own relationship growing pains with her only female lover ever, Jade. Jason suggests that J.J. might be able to help Anita with her girl problem, while she helps him with his kinky explanations. With some encouragement from a few other lovers in Anita's life she reluctantly agrees, and J. J. makes plans to fly into town for an experience that none of them will ever forget.

Jason, a werewolf, friend, and sometimes lover of Anita (especially when he wants rough sex and bondage) has someone he loves in his life, a childhood friend; J.J. The problem is J.J. cannot handle rough sex and bondage. She doesn't mind if he gets it from Anita as she never expects either of them to be monogamomous in their relationship. Just as he understands about her having women lovers as she prefers women, though she is bisexual. But Jason doesn’t want to go elsewhere to satisfy that need. So he gets Antia to show her way, by having rough sex with him while she watches.

Laurell K. Hamilton has put the sexy in dark and bondage. Though it started off slow for me with her characters talking and no action (something I have noticed for the past few books of her's), there is still an erotic darkness to this book. It was great for Jason to have his own book—as he is one of my favorite werewolves in the series. If you enjoy sex and bondage and multiple partners, this is the book for you. But I do admit to missing the old Anita.

I give Jason (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter) 3 ½ sheep.

  1. I've noticed that her stories feel more like therapy sessions as of late. I keep reading, but that is the part that bothers me. Sounds like this one starts off that way, but picks up. That is still brings me back and why I can't quit this series.

    1. I quit reading after Micha I think. They just weren't my kind of story anymore. Anita seems to have no limits to her powers. Kind of takes the fun out of it when a protag. doesn't have vulnerabilities. I was also losing track of all the characters! Too many. The first five books were fantastic!

  2. I've been reading since the first book and just received Jason in the mail today. Still one of my favorite series.

  3. I love Anita, but for the last little while I've just lost track of all the characters. I haven't gotten to Affliction yet. Hopefully soon!

  4. I'm beginning to feel like Laurell is spending too much time working out her personal issues through her books.

I don't know that the sex (sex, and more sex...did I mention the sex) adds all that much to the stories, though. How many times can she let us know about that 'sweet spot' she loves so much? Really...can we move past the 'yay, sex' and get back to telling a story?
