When Rafael Villar, Lord Vampire of London, stumbles upon a woman in the cemetery, he believes he’s found a vampire hunter—not the beautiful, intelligent stranger she proves to be.

Cassandra Burton is enthralled by the scarred, disfigured vampire who took her prisoner. The aspiring physician was robbing graves to pursue her studies—and he might turn out to be her greatest subject yet. So they form a bargain: one kiss for every experiment. As their passion grows and Rafe begins to heal, only one question remains: can Cassandra see the man beyond the monster?

All Cassandra Burton wants is to become a physician, a nearly impossible feat for a woman in Regency England. Because she is a woman she has had to resort to grave robbing in order to learn more about the human body. When she’s taken prisoner by a scarred vampire one night, she does what any other determined woman would: bargain with him.

Believing her to be a vampire hunter, Rafael Villar, the Lord Vampire of London couldn’t be more surprised to find that Cassandra is an aspiring physician. Unless of course he counts the fact that now she wants to study him. Their bargain starts off simple enough but soon, Rafe and Cassandra begin to fall for one another and that presents a whole new set of problems.

Brooklyn Ann has an elaborate style of writing. It’s not over the top to the point of boredom, but it provides fluid, easy to picture details that immerse a reader into a world of ballrooms, back alleys, graves and vampires. This is the second book of hers that I’ve read and both times I’ve never had a problem picturing her characters or scenery. She’s that descriptive with her writing. I enjoy her mix of paranormal and historical.

Cassandra is just my type of heroine. She lives in a time where women were severely oppressed yet she carries herself with this attitude of “Damn the establishment, I want more!” and it doesn’t just apply to her medical studies. She’s still a young woman but she’s quite mature and intelligent. She’s also fearless and extremely curious, which is what leads her to agree to the bargain with a vampire. Rafe on the other hand, is reluctant and in the previous books was broody and a bit bland. However, Bite At First Sight readers get to see a different side of him as he falls in love with Cassandra. He is a kind, caring and considerate of her, often stepping back and letting Cassandra have her way. Even he was surprised with how she stepped into his life, took control and refused to let him give up on himself.

Bite at First Sight is the third book in Ann’s Scandals with Bite series and frankly is one of the best ones. It’s a little darker than the previous books but in a great way. The pace gave me time to reacquaint myself with events from the first book, catch up on what I missed in the second, and allowed me a chance to know and care about Rafe and Cassandra. While they’re not the most passionate couple in the series to date, there’s something charming, sweet and endearing about them. It wasn’t just about their love story though, conflict, betrayal and danger added to the already intriguing storyline without overwhelming me as a reader. I never felt like there was too much going on. Just enough to push Rafe and Cassandra forward as characters.

Technically, Bite at First Sight can be read as a standalone but if you get the chance, do try and read the first two books as well.

  2. This sounds like a really interesting series. I particularly like the part about Cassandra and her grave robbing ways in order to practice her skills. My favorite vampire is Vlad from Once Burned.

  4. I happen to LOVE vampires so choosing one favorite is kinda hard. If I had to go for all time I would have to choose Edward Cullen only because I have spent so much of my time with him.
