Life isn’t exactly normal for Eva Parker: the stronger Eva’s emotions, the faster nearby electrical devices die. Eva can’t have a cell phone, use a computer, or be in a car for more than a few minutes without killing it. Dealing with her electricity-killing curse makes living in modern-day Los Angeles complicated enough for Eva—and that was before she was blackmailed into hiding a stolen baby elephant and partnered with Hudson, a sexy electrical engineer Eva just met.
Dodging repeated attempts on her life made by ruthless corporations hunting the elephant is easier for Eva than quelling her growing affection for Hudson, and while protecting an elephant is hard, controlling her curse is a lot harder. However, Eva must do both, because if she lets her emotions free and falls in love with Hudson, neither of them will survive.
Enchanting and quirky, Tiny Glitches fuses electrifying romance and high-voltage suspense in a rollicking adventure.
Okay, I am still reeling from this book and laughing to myself when trying to formulate a review. I am not sure where or how to start describing my reading experience. I had a similar feeling when I conquered "Guide to the Galaxy"; exhausted, fascinated with the author's imagination and truthfully glad it was over and done with! Let me try to summarize: Eva Parker is a young woman with a gift that is more like a curse with some advantages (few, in my opinion). She absorbs energy from everything electrical around her so of course she can't stay in one place very long or things stop working. She owns nothing electrical, her apartment only runs on gas and cell phones, televisions, computers and cars are not even in the realm of possibilities in her world. No one escapes this "gift/curse". If she is around anyone long enough even their electrical gadgets stop working. Makes it a little hard to make friends wouldn't you say?
This electrical power she absorbs fuels her "gift" of seeing apparitions on people giving her a hint of their personalities and emotions...geez, just give me a regular empath any day of the week!
She meets a guy named Hudson who must be a saint because they develop a mutual attraction and he stands by her when she is confronted by an old classmate who leaves her in charge of hiding an "elephantini". Or to be more precise a genetically modified elephant that will always remain about the size of a Shetland pony. Okay, lost you yet? If not pay close attention because the story gets more convoluted from here! She is being chased by bad guys that want to find the "elephantini" and her old classmate Jenny. Have you ever tried to hide a baby elephant? Multiple, multiple accostings, kidnappings and comical events ensue.
I never really bought into this story and frequently found myself trying to figure out what Eva's apparitions meant. Let me give you just a short excerpt from this story and perhaps it will help explain my conundrum: "I knew the moment he regained consciousness: Gears winked out and the school boys outfit clung to his body. The old man's murder on a loop solidified, as did a new looping scene of a young boy sitting on a three-story tiled roof, shooting spitballs on a crowd of kids below." This was just one apparition and there were many! It might have been helpful if the author had published a directory of meanings for all the different apparitions that she encountered. The bad thing was, even Eva couldn't always interpret what they meant.
Okay, I am dragging this out...this story was long and tortuous and made even longer by the need to try and understand what the main character was seeing. But saying that, I still felt like muddling through because I "kinda liked the characters." Always a romantic I was hoping Eva could find a balance with her curse and enjoy some normalcy in her life...hmm, not sure that would even be a remote possibility in this technological world but who knows!
Not the easy flowing read but if you like the unusual this might be your kind of book. Just couldn't make a steady diet of this!
I give this book 3 "draining" sheep.
