The Character's Court: Author Lucienne Diver vs. Vampire Gina Covello (Fangdemonium book tour) + giveaway

Gina Covello, Fashionista of the Fanged, v. Lucienne Diver, Author

Judge: Lucienne Diver, you’ve been accused of torturing your characters. How do you plead?

Lucienne: Not guilty, Your Honor. I mean, yes, I’ve been hard on my characters. It’s hardly a novel without danger and suspense, but they're characters that I've created, not real people.

Gina: Hello, right here. Living and... well, not breathing, but that's hardly my fault.

Judge: Miss, we'll get to you in a second. (Looking back to Lucienne.) Please continue.
Lucienne: I mean, look at me. (Extends photographs, which bailiff brings to the judge, who labels them Exhibits A, B and C.)
Lucienne: Look at those puffy pink dresses. I was never the popular girl. I was certainly never the fashion icon. And you can't see my ever-present inhaler in the pics. Even if I could’ve gotten through all the floof, I was never going to kick any serious a... butt. But then the character of Gina started talking in my head. I had the chance to revisit high school as the popular girl. That's all I was trying to do.

Judge (consulting paper before him): So you haven't been heard to say in speeches that you got to, and I quote, "Torture the popular girl. Start with the girl who always had the perfect hair and make-up and take away her reflection and tanning options, and make her dig her own way out of the grave, totally ruining her manicure. Put her in her own personal version of hell."
Lucienne (looking uncomfortable): Well, uh, that's what authors do. We take a situation and thrust someone into it who's totally out of her element—

Gina (hands on her hips, foot tapping): Oh no! Authors always talk like that: when I created so and so, but Exhibit D right here—
Lucienne: D for diva.
Gina (ignoring comment): —is me, alive and kicking. She didn't "create me". I exist. Judge, does your paper say how many times she said something like, "I'd try to write in one direction and Gina would just boot me out of the way and say, "I'll handle this"? You know, almost like I'm a real person?
Lucienne: I did say that. Authors talk like that all the time, like their characters are real people. Makes us sound a little nuts. But, Gina, if you'd been writing your own story, would you really have let yourself buried in that heinous white eyelet gown you literally wouldn't be caught dead in?
Gina: That’s the whole point, I was dead at that time… I had no say in my death and all that, but once I rose again, I took over.
Lucienne: You can't have it both ways! Either I put you through the ringer or everything was all your idea.

Judge (raises gavel as though to pound it and decides instead to let them have it out).

Gina: Or maybe you got me into things and I got myself out. What about that vampiress Melissande, who had designs on my boyfriend Bobby? Or Alistaire, the crazy psychic who goes around calling me morsel and pretty, pretty and trying to eat my friends.
Lucienne: What's wrong with Alistaire? Readers love him!
Gina: What's wrong with Alistaire? Where do I start?

Lucienne: What about Bobby? I gave you a really hot boyfriend with some major powers.
Gina (gets a dreamy look in her eyes): You didn't give me Bobby. That had to do with the after-prom party and his vampire make-over.
Lucienne: But still—
Gina: And by the way, I didn't survive that party, so thanks for that.
Lucienne: You got over it.
Gina: And you'll get over this. Look, Judge, all I'm asking for is enough of a settlement to rebuild my wardrobe. I couldn't exactly go back home after burial, and in the months since, I've fought about a bazillion battles. Blood is never fashion forward, and let me tell you, stakes are holy hell on your clothes.

Judge (leaning forward for a better look): Miss Covello, you've claimed torture and emotional distress, but I don't see a mark on you. Do you have any evidence? Any photographs or police reports? Anything to back up your claims?
Gina: I have my obituary. But short of that, well, vampires heal pretty quickly and we don't show up on film. But she's written about all of it. Every single battle. Just look at these. (Plaintiff fans out a series of five paperback books. Submitted into evidence: VAMPED, REVAMPED, FANGTASTIC, FANGTABULOUS and FANGDEMONIUM, Exhibits E-I.)
Judge: Thank you. I'll take these back to my chambers to examine and consider my decision. In the meantime—

(The doors at the back of the courtroom open, and everyone but the judge who is already facing them turn to look.)

Gina: Hells bells!
Lucienne: Is that—
Gina: Agents Stick-up-her-butt and Stuffed Shirt. Yeah, it's them. In the flesh.
Lucienne: Sounds like an action scene to me. You want to take this one?
Gina (sending a side-eye to the judge): Then you admit I'm real.
Lucienne: You've always been plenty real to me.
Gina (kicking off her stilettos and preparing for fight or flight): Good, then maybe you'll go easier on me in the future.
Lucienne (dropping into a ready stance of her own): Maybe.

(The figures from the back close in.)

Gina (throwing Lucienne a glance): I've got this. Get gone.
Lucienne: And miss seeing you in action? Not a chance. Besides, it seems you've taught me a thing or two. Together this time.
Gina: On three...

Fanged and fabulous…and hunted.
Gina Covella, fashionista of the fanged, and her entourage are primed to reveal the existence of vampires on the popular Ghouligans television show, when their former federal handlers swoop in to shut them down and imprison the vamps in one of their super secret testing facilities. Or not so secret, as the gang knows all about the horror hospitals and has sworn to take them down.

Their daring escape runs them right into the arms of “the resistance”—a group of humans and vampires who’ve joined together to stop the fighting that’s made Gina and her boy Bobby’s hometown a bloody battlefield. Going home brings them back to old nemeses as well, including the psycho psychic who declared Gina “chaos” and Bobby “the key”. They hope he’ll unlock the secret of stopping the Feds’s freakshow experiments for good, because they’re building up to something big. Huge. And they’re consolidating their power in the Big Easy, aka New Orleans, where what’s cooking is nothing less than the final showdown.

Excerpt
I’d spent months fanged and fabulous and still I took an unneeded breath as the dye packs burst open and the fans blew the brightly colored powders straight for us. I slammed my eyes shut, but not quite fast enough to prevent some dye getting in and stinging to high heaven. Blood tears—the only kind I cried—formed at the corners of my eyes to wash out the irritants. Very sexy.

I looked to Bobby on my one side, hot as all hell even streaked in blue and purple—the blue totally matching his incredible eyes—and Marcy on the other side of me in flaming red/orange, and I cringed. I remembered my color wheel from elementary art. No doubt I’d been blasted with yellow and green from the middle of the rainbow. So not my colors. I looked down to confirm and wished I hadn’t.

Kill me now, I thought.

At least the cameras wouldn’t catch how badly the yellow and green dye went with my screaming purple mini-dress. Or my night-dark hair. And the green did match my eyes, even if only the Ghouligans’s studio audience would see it.

That’s what they were there for—neutral observers, randomly chosen, but for the background checks to keep out those who might want to end our unnatural lives. While we didn’t show up on film, the audience did. Their testimony and reactions would help flesh out the show. The dye packs made us visible for the those watching at home. Or, at least, they made our silhouettes visible in the voids we left on the canvas behind us. Because the dyes themselves didn’t help with our visibility.

Whatever weird magic stole away our images also prevented anything attached to us, like clothes and dye, from showing up on camera or in mirrors. So random.

The canvas was being sent on some kind of national tour after this before being auctioned off for charity along with a bunch of other things the Ghouligans had arranged. We were making history. Vampires finally coming out of the coffin. I expected it to feel a little less . . . silly.

Character Post: If I Ruled the World by Hermes (Lucienne Diver)

I Smell Sheep kindly invited me back even after the last time when my heroine Tori Karacis took me to task over all the horrible things I do to her in the Latter-Day Olympians series. This time, though I tried and tried to form a rebuttal, well…I just couldn’t. Anyway, Hermes was not letting either of us have any more screen time. Not if he could help it. And, uh, he might have gotten the wrong impression about the interview. So without further ado, I present to you Hermes (modern day aliases: humor columnist Thom Foolery, messenger service mogul Hector Molyvos, gods know what else):

If I Ruled the World by Hermes

I thought this was an interview for Playboy. No? What do you mean “I Smell Sheep”? Is that a crack about me stealing Apollo’s flock? Listen, that was ages ago. I was a kid for gods’ sake. And anyway, they were cattle…though they certainly did smell!

Anyway, I suppose I can give up a few minutes of my time to talk about the way things would be if I ruled the world. It’s not as if I haven’t spent enough time fantasizing along those lines!

First of all, you know all those ancient Greek statues where everyone’s hanging around naked with maybe just a pair of sandals or some draping that misses all the naughty bits?

I give you Exhibits A and B:

Have you ever noticed how Athena’s the only one all suited up? The ultimate party pooper, always girded up for war. Well, I say no more! Nope, nudity is the new black. It worked for us during the Olympic Games. It worked for the bull-jumpers at Knossos. Honestly, I don’t see why we ever gave it up! Oh, right, hole in the ozone layer, skin cancer, all that jazz. Well, I have a cream for that. No, really. Wonderful stuff. Herbal. No FDA approval necessary. (And don’t you believe that P.I. Tori Karacis about addictive properties.) Still skeptical? You can try it right now for free! Return it if you’re not fully satisfied.

Off topic here on the topic of satisfaction—WTF ancient sculptors. You chisel us naked and skimp on our manhood? You give the satyrs shlongs all day long and the rest of us you make limp biscuits? Remind me again why we let you live. Well, anyway, you’re dead now, so I suppose that’s some justice.

Moving on… Next we bring back the libations! Ah, the good old days of worshippers bringing us the best of everything—food, oils, drink… Ah, drink. Now they call it tithing. Back then we cut out the middlemen, the moneymen. When I rule the world, I’ll once again generously accept your…donations…in the form of the best of the best of the best. Gourmet chefs, boulangers, a wine cellar that would make Dionysus moan. And supermodels to serve me. No Vestal Virgins in my high temple, thank you very much. Give me the bad girls. The naughty and kinky, yearning to breathe free. There’s no judgment here. I leave that for others. (Yeah, that’s right, Athena, I’m looking at you…without even your helmet and peplos. How about them apples? The answer: not bad from where I’m sitting!)

Then we do away with all the buzzkills. Infomercials #1. Death to infomercials. Death to talking head political pundit programs. There’s only going to be one party in the future, and what a party it will be! We’ll keep the Daily Show, though, of course. And I’ll appoint Stephen Colbert as my own personal press secretary, but that’s where I’ll draw the line. Although…now that I think about it, press conferences might be kind of fun. I won’t have to picture anyone in their underwear. They won’t be wearing any!

Hey, all, it’s been real, but Lucienne is jumping up and down (which would be so much better without clothes on, I think you’ll agree) trying to get my attention (mission accomplished) to remind me that I’m supposed to be sending you all forth to read about my further adventures. There’s a bottle or two of the good stuff calling my name, so I’ll be brief. Read these or when I rule the world you will be conscripted into an endless game of Naked Twister. Or maybe Pictionary. Depends on my mood.

Dragons, demons, gods, gorgons. Who will save the world…and who could destroy it?
Tori wakes after Rise of the Blood to two very shocking realizations: one, she’s in bed with a very naked Apollo, having lost the fight to resist their attraction. Two, she still has her wings. Not dinky little fairy wings. Full-scale, cover-’em-with-a-trench-coat bat wings.

Apollo suggests consulting the Gray Sisters on the wings. Those cannibalistic, psychopathic oracles who, even with only one tooth and one eye among them, manage to see too much. As in a Rapture, zombie-apocalypse, biblical-plague, hellgates-busted-open the end of the world.

While the Sisters are perfectly on board with death and destruction, the thinning of the human herd doesn’t sit well with them at all. They’ll help her. All she has to do is save the world.

Tori and her team trace the origin of the plagues to New York City, which is under quarantine and martial law—as if that’s enough to stop the influx of gods and gorgons, dragons and demons. But as death threatens from without, betrayal lurks within Tori’s ranks. And nobody is safe. Nobody.

Warning: Betrayal and bad-assery, sensuality and a sizzling hot sun god. Death, demons, destruction and, potentially, the end of the world as we know it…zombie style.

The Character's Court: Tori Karacis VS Author Lucienne Diver + giveaway

“If it please the court, I’d like to introduce into evidence item number 1.” Tori Karacis said, looking over at me knowingly.

I blanched. I knew that cover—the kickass woman on the front of it who didn’t look so much like my heroine. Her hair was much too tame. See, Tori, for those of you who don’t know, is part gorgon. While her hair isn’t actually a nest of snakes, you’d never know it at a distance. Think a more Mediterranean Helena Bonham Carter.

“Let the record show the item is a paperback book entitled BAD BLOOD,” the bailiff announced, carrying the book toward the bench.

I was so dead. If I’d actually known that my characters existed in some parallel universe…that I could be held accountable for all the hell I put them through…Well, I hadn't, and that was that. If wishes were horses, I could have ridden right out of there. But they weren’t. This was a trial, and the punishment was anything up to and including subjecting me to my heroine’s same trials and tribulations.

I wondered if that meant the absolute torment of having to decide between the attentions of the two sexiest men I could envision…and I had a pretty good imagination. If so, I wasn’t absolutely sure I wanted to win this battle.

“So noted,” agreed the judge. She flipped through the book, stopping to read a few highlighted passages, her eyes above the bookish librarian glasses going wide.

Tori referred to her own notes. “If I might read from the first highlighted section?”

The judge gave her the nod.

“I fought the pain as I gathered my legs beneath me for another offensive. The attacker was distracted with the effort to free his hand from Circe’s chest cavity. I swallowed the bile burning up my throat and flew into action, closing the distance just in time to watch Circe fall to the ground, the gaping hole in her chest leaking gore and an equally noxious liquid starting to seep through her skirt.

I grabbed the arm of her assailant—killer—as he turned to run and froze as my brain suddenly registered what I was now seeing close up. The hands were scaly, clawed and blue-green. He turned on me with a look of malicious madness, ran his tongue over teeth that were again simply wrong and wrenched himself out of my grip.”

Tori appealed to the judge, “We’re barely into Chapter One here, and already she has me fighting for my life.”

The judge leveled a look at me. I shrugged. What could I do? I liked action. Suspense. Drama. Who didn’t?

It was a hard gaze. I was relieved when she turned back to Tori. “Is that all?” she asked. “Clearly you survived.”

“All? All?” Tori asked, her voice rising. “Let’s see. Latter-Day Olympians trying to stage a comeback. Murder, mayhem, domestic terrorism, death and destruction.”

“Dogs and cats, living together,” I muttered. I couldn’t help myself, I defaulted to Bill Murray when I got nervous, and Ghostbusters was such a classic.

“Ms. Diver, I’m afraid you might not be taking our proceedings seriously,” the judge said, staring me down.

I bit my lip before I could ask whether she was going to throw the book at me. It was a paperback after all. Probably it wouldn’t hurt…unless she caught me with the corner.

“Sorry, Judge,” I said contritely. “Nervous habit.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I thought I caught a brief smile on Tori’s face. She couldn’t help it. She had my sense of humor.

“Anything else?” the Judge asked Tori.

“That’s just the first book! In the second—”

“Spoilers!” the judge cautioned.

“Oh, right, sorry. Well, if I might introduce into evidence item number two, you can see for yourself.” She held aloft my second Latter-Day Olympians novel, CRAZY IN THE BLOOD. I groaned. Things had really been touch and go there for awhile…particularly touch.

The judge accepted the book from the bailiff and flipped through. She stopped at a section and started to read. I heard her breath catch and then start again, maybe a little bit more quickly than before. She turned the page, continued reading. Finally, she looked up. “This Apollo—is he here? I think I may need him for questioning. Or Detective Nick Armani…”

Yes, there was a definite smirk on Tori’s face. “I’m not saying there weren’t perks, but seriously, have you ever tried to deal with two alpha males, both hot enough to melt iron? It’s not as great as it sounds.”

“Really? I think I’d like to be the judge of that,” the judge said, amusing herself.

“You and me both, sister,” I muttered. I didn’t think she heard me.

“Do you have any other evidence to introduce?” the judge asked hopefully.

Tori looked at me. “Items 3, 4 and 5—two more novels, one in print, the other being released in digital September 16th, and a short story in an anthology called KICKING IT.”

The bailiff took the books and flash drive and handed them over. “Nice boots,” she commented, seeing the KICKING IT cover. “Yours?”

Tori was no longer just looking at me. She was glaring. I couldn’t meet her gaze. If the judge read what I did to her in that one there’d be no doubt about my guilt. Oh, I was going down hard.

The judge studied the evidence before her, silent, serious. Terrifying. But she flipped through Tori’s third adventure, RISE OF THE BLOOD, and I saw her eyes widen.

“Given the bulk of the evidence and the seriousness of the charges,” she said finally. Did she sound a little breathless? “I’m going to have to take these home with me. Give them all due consideration. I’ll have my verdict for you tomorrow. Bright and early in my chambers.”

Tori chewed her lip and started to gather up her papers. The judge took the books with her and left through a door behind the bench.

I had no idea which way things would go. Or whether it would do any good to talk to Tori. After all, I was already plotting her next adventure and…well, I couldn’t exactly offer to pull my punches and disappoint my fans. But she was tough. She could take it.

Right? Right? Bueller?

Okay, so I quoted Bill Murray and Ben Stein during stress. So sue me. Line forms on the right.
