New Fall Television Shows 2015

This fall is looking good. Add to these all the returning shows and I won't have time to do anything else!

This link will take you to a calendar of all fall shows:

The Bastard Executioner
(Tuesdays starting September 15th on FX)
The Bastard Executioner is supposed to be a medieval epic that deals with politics, divine intervention, secret identities, and — naturally — an executioner.

Minority Report
(Mondays starting September 21st on Fox)
Fox's Minority Report is a procedural crime drama that takes place years after the film wraps up. The show will follow a detective who teams up with a precog who still has the ability to see crimes before they occur. It's basically a typical crime series with a sci-fi twist.

Scream Queens
(Tuesdays starting September 22nd on Fox)
Season one of Scream Queens is about a sorority that comes under attack from a masked murderer who seems to be interested in knocking all of them off. But it's an anthology show, so if this season plays well, it'll come back next year with all new characters, True Detective style.
Limitless
(Tuesdays starting September 22nd on CBS)
Limitless is a crime drama and also going to be dealing with an overarching story that seems to involve government conspiracies and maybe a mob or shadow corporation or some sort of evil entity all revolving around these genius pills.

Heroes Reborn

(Thursdays starting September 24th on NBC)
A return to Tim Kring's world in which people wake up one day to discover they have superpowers (and are now on the run after being blamed by the government for a terrorist attack). New people are developing powers, while a number of heroes from the original series are returning including space-time manipulator Hiro Nakamura and mind-reader Matt Parkman.

Supergirl
(Mondays starting October 26th on CBS)

Marvel's Jessica Jones
(Friday, November 20th on Netflix)
Daredevil, Netflix's first series in the Marvel universe, was a surprisingly well-crafted (and exceptionally blood-splattered) take on the blind vigilante. Jessica Jones is the follow-up series and follows the titular character (played by Krysten Ritter) as she transitions from superhero to private investigator.

Fear The Walking Dead
It's been confirmed that Fear the Walking Dead will take place during the early stages of the zombie apocalypse - that period its parent series missed, with Rick in his coma - and is set in Los Angeles, over 2,000 miles from Atlanta where The Walking Dead is set.

But while Fear will initially serve as a prequel - dealing with the "anxiety and anticipation" of an outbreak, rather than going "full-zombie" - The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman has confirmed that the two series' timelines will align at some point.

Wipeout-ABC
Wipeout looks to be returning for eighth season this coming summer. After the Summer 2014 run of lower rated episodes, producers appear to be overhauling the format for 2015. ABC is now casting for an updated version, called Wipeout Extreme.

T.V. Series Review: Daredevil

Daredevil
First episode date: April 10, 2015
Network: Netflix
Genres: Action, Science Fiction
Cast: Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Vincent D'Onofrio (Wilson Fisk), Toby Leonard Moore (James Wesley)
The first in a planned series of shows detailing the Marvel universe, "Daredevil" follows Matt Murdock, attorney by day and vigilante by night. Blinded in an accident as a child, Murdock uses his heightened senses as Daredevil, fighting crime on the streets of New York after the sun goes down. His efforts are not welcomed by powerful businessman Wilson Fisk -- aka Kingpin -- and others whose interests collide with those of Daredevil. Though Murdock's day job portrays a man who believes in the criminal justice system, his alter ego suggests otherwise, as he takes the law into his own hands to protect his Hell's Kitchen neighborhood and the surrounding communities.

Daredevil is a T.V. series created by Drew Goddard and
produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios and shown on Nextfilx. All thirteen episodes went up at one time, practically begging to be binge watched. The show picks up sometime after the big alien invasion we saw in The Avengers. Hell's Kitchen in NY city is trying to rebuild. Lots of bad guys (Russian mob, Japanese drug lord, crooked politicians) have moved in looking to claim the area.
I haven't read the Marvel comic version of Daredevil so I went in without any expectations...well, if it has Marvel on it, I'm expecting entertainment. The show starts with Murdoch and his best friend Foggy buying an office for their law practice. Then it is off to the races as Murdoch and his scooby gang take on Mr. Fisk (villain) leaving behind a high body count. The hero/villain dynamic is well done. They both think they are doing what is best for their city. They find happiness along the way only to have it stripped from them as they make sacrifices to achieve their endgame.
Mr. Fisk
One word I can use to describe the show is dark. Dark in tone and dark as in "I can't see what's going on!" I knew the show was going to be a violent drama, but I didn't realize how far they were going with it. This would earn an R rating. There are body parts chopped off, brutal beatings, lots of blood...and no lights...seriously. Hell's Kitchen must not allow overhead lighting. I can understand the dark outside where Daredevil goes after the bad guys, but every house and office only has one desk lamp with maybe a 25 watt bulb in it. I also understand Murdoch's apartment wouldn't have lights...he's blind. But the rest of the characters aren't. I don't know of any female that would walk through an office in the dark and only turn on the desk lamp. Just saying... The trailer below is pretty much how all the episodes look. Probably 80% was filmed in low lighting.

Darkness aside, I liked the show. I didn't feel compelled to watch all the episodes in a row, but I did want to watch it. And let's be honest...Daredevil looks good. I didn't mind just seeing his jaw and mouth when he wore the black mask. That is a fine looking mouth. This brings up another thing. Why didn't any of the bad guys wonder why his mask had no eye holes? I also liked Mr. Fisk's right hand man Wesley.
Acting, writing, settings, were all good, but honestly I couldn't see most of the settings so I can't really comment on that aspect. Definitely worth watching if you like the darker side of superheroes.

Book Review: THE MYTHOLOGY OF GRIMM: The Fairy Tale and Folklore Roots of the Popular TV Show by Nathan Robert Brown

The Mythology of Grimm: The Fairy Tale and Folklore Roots of the Popular TV Show
by Nathan Robert Brown
Paperback: 368 pages
Berkley Trade (September 30, 2014)

Since its debut in 2011, the hit television show Grimm on NBC has been described as “cop drama—with a twist…a dark and fantastical project about a world in which characters inspired by Grimms’ Fairy Tales exist” (The Oregonian). The show captured the hearts of fans as homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt of the Portland Police and his partner, Detective Hank Griffin, fight to keep the balance between humanity and mythological creatures of the world.

This Fall, author and mythologist, Nathan Robert Brown brings you THE MYTHOLOGY OF GRIMM: The Fairy Tale and Folklore Roots of the Popular TV Show (Berkley Trade Paperback; $16.00; September 30, 2014) to offer fans a deeper insight into the mythological and folklore roots of their favorite show. Brown takes each episode of Grimm as a launching point to talk about the fairy tale that inspired it, from The Big Bad Wolf to Sleeping Beauty, and explores the history and folkloric traditions that come into play during Nick’s incredible investigations.

The book will appeal to fans of Grimm, especially with the fourth premiering this October. But readers who are looking for an accessible guide to fairy tales and folklore will also love the wealth of interesting and little-known facts about some of the world’s best-loved stories (along with some you’ve never heard of!).

Confession! I've never seen an episode of Grimm...I know, right? But I've always wanted too because I have a love of the dark side of fairy tales. What drew me to this book was the added historical background information the author includes about all the things that appear in the TV show.

If you are a history buff or trivia pursuer you are going to love this info packed book of all things Grimm and fairy tale. First you get the history of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's lives. I've never read up on these two so it was all new to me. Along with a bit about Charles Perrault (French version of the Grimm brothers and also who we know as Mother Goose) and Joseph Jacobs (English version of the Grimm brothers).

The author then covers all the weapons used in the TV series and gives a detailed background on the actual weapons the TV versions were based on. Most of the book then focuses on the actual fairy tales used in the TV show. First there is a retelling of the fairy tale such as Little Red Riding-hood. Then you get history and information about key elements in the fairy tale and then it is compared to the TV show episode about that particular tale.

This book is information overload, but the good kind for those who love it. You don't have to watch the TV show to appreciate this book. Just the love of fairy tale history.
