Meet Josef Matulich author of Camp Arcanum + giveaway

I SMELL SHEEP IN ARCANUM

First off, I need to tell you my Sheep smells like Axe. My twenty-two year old son’s nickname is “Sheep”, inspired by an auditory typo like “he said, sheep said.” He unfortunately has taken many men’s cologne ads to heart and travels in an aromatic cloud, but that is not what I came here to share with you today.

My first novel “Camp Arcanum” is filled with fantastic elements: witches, demons, cursed jewelry, animated mounds of hair, and undead skinless bunnies. I kid ewe not, a few of the bizarre occurrences in the book actually happened.

Between twenty and thirty years ago, there was a satanic cult scare in central Ohio. Hunters had found groves of trees adorned with the skins of rabbits and squirrels turned inside out and hung from the branches with string. Obviously Black Magic. While law enforcement and local media were hunting for the evil cabals responsible, most likely other hunters in truth, I supposed that the skinned bodies would wind up in a grove outside Arcanum, Ohio used for demonic rituals. When you have dead rodents and lagomorphs simply hanging about, and you’re summoning demonic elements from before the time of the Creation, accidents will happen. Thus the plague of undead, skinless bunnies in “Camp Arcanum” came about.

In the days that I was first writing the book, I frequented many New Age bookstores for research. In one of them, I picked up a pewter skull ring from one of the bins of polished stones. I got an impression of cold and dark and evil intent. Imagine a winter’s day in the middle of the third term of a Nixon presidency. I do not profess to be psychically-gifted, so I was surprised to get this kind of impression.

I took the ring to the man behind the counter, who was surprised to see it. The ring was not part of their stock, but something left behind by another patron. I wrote that into “Camp Arcanum” as a cursed ring that brought my hero nightmares and bad luck which pursed him through the novel and into its sequel “Power Tools in the Sacred Grove.” I don’t know if the real ring had the same effect, but that bookstore is closed now. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

A man with a reputation for delivering miracles and a bad history with crazy people who believe in magical conspiracies, he soon finds himself in a small town filled with magick and intrigue. In spite of the recurring pain in the back of his head that reminds him of what happens when pretty girls smile, he gets caught up in a love triangle between Brenwyn, head of the local Wiccan coven, and Jeremiah, her demonologist ex. As Marc tries to meet his impossible deadlines, he navigates a landscape of witches, demons, power tools and undead skinless bunnies.
