Fantasy Author Ivy Keating: Ink Well--One writer’s process explained for the reader + giveaway

I found there are 4 basic steps to reaching a goal. If you’re a writer, creating a novel and finding an agent or publisher can be daunting. These steps can help you succeed. They are: identification, research, action, and reward.

1-Identification
It helps to know the goal you are trying to achieve. Let's say you want to write a book. Is finishing the story the goal or is getting it published? Be specific. When I started writing, my goal was to find a publisher and not self-publish my story. I wanted it to go through rigorous editing and I felt working with a publishing house was the best way.

2-Research.
What will it take to reach your goal? I looked up everything from the desired average length of a fantasy to which acquisition editors wanted to see this genre. Don't let this step hold up your progress. I didn't look up publishing houses until the novel was complete.

3-Action
Do the activities that will help you reach your goal. To write a book you have to have a story and create a novel. This is the step that is most likely to stand in your way. The key is to understand that goals are often not reached in a day, however, they require movement in the right direction. It is a step-by-step process. I did not get overwhelmed because when the task seemed too great, I focused on only what I had to do next. For example, while I was writing—all I had to do most of the time was to write the next sentence. I could do that!

4-Reward
Acknowledge your accomplishments. You can even give yourself a gift, praise, or both. It will help reinforce the concept that you can obtain your goals.

But when news of his plans to invade the kingdom of Attaveer spread, a new opponent emerges---Sarana, the daughter of a farmer…or is she?

She strived to learn the creature's magic and master fighting skills with the hope of becoming a warrior. Her dreams came true when she was allowed to join the Attaveerian king's network of spies--a group poised to help defend the kingdom from an invasion by the Dark King and his powerful army.

When word of the white-haired messenger reached the Dark King he vowed to stop at nothing to capture or kill his opponent.

The time for hiding is over.

Can Sarana save herself and her kingdom? Follow Sarana from death to destiny as she joins forces with psychics, Valomeres, and the power of inner strength, to defeat an evil king.

Teaser Excerpt:
“The sight in the dark space under the platform made her gasp. Storm! The Shiny golden eyes of the king’s Valomere. The creature that led a pack of gray wolves. It was the size of a jackal and had the narrow snout of a fox. The thought of its magical ability to kill with undetectable speed made her tremble. Everyone in Bounten knew, at the king’s whim, Storm could pass through her victim’s soul and destroy it.”

Motivated by nature’s mysteries and the complexity of human behavior, Ivy Keating writes science fiction and fantasy novels that explore the relationship between mankind and the natural world. A master’s degree in social work helps her understand the nature of her characters as they struggle with the repercussions of their actions.

Her first novel, Camouflage, was inspired by the landscape and natural beauty of New England. Sarana and the Dark King, was imagined from a mental picture of the Great Lakes. The proximity of these bodies of water and the land that surrounds them conjured the images of separate kingdoms—at least they did in her mind. Ivy believes that her challenge as a writer is to take a setting that intrigues her and create a plot that is both clever and surprising.

Genre: Paranormal Romance
It’s a strange thing to wake up dead, knowing you are standing in the center of unchangeable destiny—strange, yet acceptable. When the moment holds the death of someone you love—that’s where the rules of destiny deserve to be broken.

Cara Wynter read a book that told her stories of another place, a forgotten time. As she read, she remembered the man she loved—the dark stranger in her dreams, re-lived her own death in his arms. Now, he is in front of her, wanting her, loving her, desperate to save her, even from herself.

From the dark halls of Hades to the hidden mountains of Transylvania, Cara finds herself falling yet again for the man who once traded his soul to save her own. Spells, witches, mythical creatures, and ancient, avenging gods threaten her daily. Terrifying, emerging powers and twisted murders—are her new normal. The horrors she tried for years to ignore, come for her with a vengeance, dragging her into a hidden world of fantasy, and magic.

Exclusive Excerpt:
Lying in his arms was comfortable as breathing. I had the feeling again, like I had done this a thousand times, lay right here in this exact spot. Only this time the feeling had altered slightly, morphed into a certainty—now I knew I had. Thoughts of dark spells, and murdering goddesses receded like the ground beneath the climbing plane. I fell asleep, the rightness of the moment spilling over all my thoughts. This was where I was meant to be, here in his arms. Witches, heritage, immortality, spells, hell, and gods be damned—this was my place. It seemed every single thing in my life leading up to this exact moment had been nothing more than shadows and parlor tricks. He was my reality. On the glittering trail of that thought came a moment of pure feeling, irrational and possibly volatile, yet altogether enthralling. I wondered if I could keep him with me for always.

EXCERPT
Sedona Sin –

I’d known Asher long enough to know he was usually a man of few words, and he was as far from a player as you could get. If he dated at all, I didn’t know about it. I also never caught him in a lie. So when he told me his attraction to me was about who I was, not because of some primal wolf instinct, I believed him. I wanted to pinch myself.

But then he kissed me. Only this wasn’t a sweet, chaste kiss like the one we’d had in the snow. This was a hungry, possessive kiss. I surrendered to the passion, my desire for him consuming me. My fingers slid back into his long, silky hair, clutching fistfuls and enjoying the growl rumbling his chest. He got up from his stool without breaking the kiss and lifted me into his arms as though I weighed nothing.

My teeth grazed his lower lip as he carried me down the hall toward the master bedroom. Holding me with one arm, he closed the door and then lowered me until my feet touched the ground. I slid my hands under his shirt, lifting it over his head, and he did the same to mine before claiming my lips again. The heat from his body warmed me all over as he held me tight against him, and I suddenly needed to get rid of my bra, my pants— Hell, everything had to go. I didn’t want anything coming between us. Ever.

“Need you naked,” I gasped into the kiss, my voice so breathless I almost didn’t recognize it.

Dear god, I’d never seen such a sexy smile on Asher’s face before. Wolfish. Damn, if he ever discovered the power of that grin, I was in trouble.

“You first.” His voice was deep, raw, and even sexier than his smile, if that was possible. He had my bra unhooked and off in record time. His fingers worked on my jeans as he kissed me again. My hardened nipples brushed his chest and I moaned, heat curling low in my belly. I ran my hands down his chiseled abs and unbuttoned his pants. I slid his boxers and jeans down over his perfect ass. He caught the front before his erection got in the way, and his pants fell to the floor.

I wriggled out of my own, and suddenly, insecurity swamped me. I hadn’t been naked with a man of my own choosing since before I was bitten, and with no one at all since I gave birth to twins in that storage facility. The last time I’d had a boyfriend, I didn’t have stretch marks right below my belly button, my boobs were probably perkier, and although I was still fit, my bikini body was long gone.

Asher’s gaze wandered over me, and I fought the urge to cover myself. His head cocked slightly. “What’s wrong?”

I walked my fingers up his tan, rock-hard abs and finally met his eyes. “Truth?”

“Always.” His large hand slid up my back as he drew me closer to him. His touch was reassuring, and while his erection pulsed between us, his gaze remained patient. The desire was there, but he clearly wasn’t going to rush me.

And I loved him for that.

Wait, I what?

He frowned. “We can slow this down. I’m not going anywhere.”

I shook my head, pushing the shock of my revelation away. “No, I want this.” I chuckled, rolling my eyes. “It’s just…I wish I was as hot as you are.”

“You’re shitting me.” His smile made my heart skip. “You are so beautiful, Naomi.” For a moment, he seemed to be searching for words, then finally chuckled. “I have never in my life wanted a woman more than I want you right now. I…” He shook his head. “Sorry, it’s tough to get the blood back up to my brain.” His admission made me laugh, and his brow rose. “I’m not kidding. I wouldn’t change a single thing about you.”

Book Review: The Ice Lion (The Rewilding Reports) by Kathleen O'Neal Gear

The Ice Lion (The Rewilding Reports)
by Kathleen O'Neal Gear
June 15, 2021
304 pages
DAW
This cli-fi novel from a notable archaeologist and anthropologist explores a frozen future where archaic species struggle to survive an apocalyptic Ice Age

One thousand years in the future, the zyme, a thick blanket of luminous green slime, covers the oceans. Glaciers three-miles-high rise over the continents. The old stories say that when the Jemen, godlike beings from the past, realized their efforts to halt global warming had gone terribly wrong, they made a desperate gamble to save life on earth and recreated species that had survived the worst of the earth's Ice Ages.

Sixteen-summers-old Lynx and his best friend Quiller are members of the Sealion People—archaic humans known as Denisovans. They live in a world growing colder, a world filled with monstrous predators that hunt them for food. When they flee to a new land, they meet a strange old man who impossibly seems to be the last of the Jemen. He tells Lynx the only way he can save his world is by sacrificing himself to the last true god, a quantum computer named Quancee.

Classified as cli-fi, this book's premise goes something like this: when the world was about to end, scientists mixed genes of hardy ice-age surviving animals and prehistoric humans to create new species that would be able to brave such a world. We follow two main characters on their journey to find themselves.

What I Didn't Like
Didn't find many scifi elements in a book that claims to be a cli-fi novel.

The protagonists are so unlikeable that it was really hard for me to connect to them or even keep reading about them. It might be just me but I'm so over reading about women running after men who are assholes while treating decent guys like trash!

The first time I read it, I found the description of the setting to be fascinating. However, reading the same thing over and over again got tiring pretty quickly.

What I Did Like
There's an authenticity to many of the things described in the book, such as:
  • The rise of the level of water in the oceans
  • The world divides itself into clans and tribes who are all struggling to survive in a harsh world
  • The natural evolution of superstitions to religion that dictates the lives of the characters in this book
  • I knew this was going to be the first book in a series going on. However, getting almost next to no information about why the world ended or how the new species were created and by whom didn't make for a satisfying conclusion.

Book Review: Green Goo Goblin (Jas Bond Book 1) by Gretchen S.B. + giveaway

Green Goo Goblin (Jas Bond Book 1)
by Gretchen S.B.
May 17, 2021
57 pages
Genre: Urban Fantasy
My life is one giant cycle of group deniability…

As a magic-less son of a witch owning a store full magical objects isn't easy. But with my unhelpful rottweiler Bailey and a handful of supernatural staff, we've sold everything from elfin wedding china to a life-size dwarven statue we don't like to talk about. Everything is going smoothly until a goblin customer starts coughing up a disgusting green goo. Little did I know as I watch that liquid spew from his mouth that his presence and that goo was going to send my life into a tailspin, leaving me in the crosshairs of a murder.

Check out the goblin and the goo he produces in Green Goo Goblin.

Green Goo Goblin features Jas Bond, the owner of an antique store and a witch's son with no magic of his own. This is a fun short story that you'll find yourself easily falling into and read quickly.

What I Didn't Like
That this wasn't a novel or even a novella. It's too short to be called anything but a short story. I'm not saying I don't go for them, I'd just like to know beforehand what I'm getting into.

Some details seemed unnecessary additions that had just been included to meet the word count or something. Like the fact that Jas's pet rottweiler, Bailey, has to take pills with her food. I mean what does this contribute to the story?

What I Did Like
The writing flows smoothly, so you get into the flow of things right from the start and just keep going.

Likable characters, including the protagonist, made the story even more fun to read.

For a short story, we get a good amount of worldbuilding. To me, this indicated two things. Firstly, the world that the author has built is an interesting one and I'd like to know more about it. Secondly, since the protagonist has no magic of their own, the author can leverage their ignorance about the norms of the magic world to educate the readers without info-dumping.

In any case, I had a good time reading this short and would love to know more about the world it's set in.

Green Goo Goblin Excerpts
The goblin nods and grunts once before pivoting and getting two steps toward the door. He begins hacking and coughing.

I take a large step back, toward where Bailey lies against the wall.

The hacking becomes so severe even Bailey stands up and trots around the opening in the counter so she can stare at the goblin. She gives three quick barks which sets my adrenaline on fire.

"Sir, are you okay?" I ask cautiously but I know I can’t help him.

One of the many reasons I adopted Bailey is she can sense active magic. If someone does a spell in her vicinity, she knows about it. If she gives those three quick barks, it means whatever is being done to the goblin is magic and not allergies.

The goblin doubles over, hacking harder. Soon, a thick green foam spews from his mouth with the force of each cough.

"Dammit," I mutter as I grab the walkie-talkie from under the counter and click it on. "Sven, I really need you out here. Something's wrong with a customer."

The line crackles. "I don't want to be involved," answers Sven's absurdly deep brogue over the walkie-talkie.

"Sven, seriously," I hiss into the walkie-talkie.

There is a huff. "Fine."

"Sir, are you okay? I'm calling the paramedics. Our type of paramedics," I qualify so he knows I am not calling human EMTs. Because who-knows-what would hit the fan if that happens.

I throw down the walkie-talkie and wrench my cell phone out of my back pocket before hitting the supernatural hotline I have on speed dial in my phone.

"Supernatural helpline, what is your emergency?"

"This is Jas Bond at the Fix ‘n’ Find. I have a goblin here coughing so hard that instead of coughing up a lung, it's a foamy green liquid. I don't know enough about goblin anatomy to know how bad that is." I try to keep my voice calm, but unease and panic are setting in. And I hope whatever it is isn't contagious.

"Thank you for that information, sir. I am dispatching two emergency personnel now. They should be there within the next fifteen minutes. Is there anything else I can do for you?"

I hate calling the supernatural hotline; for whatever reason supernatural beings live so long the idea of emergencies doesn’t seem to register with them.

"Not unless you can help this guy through the phone," I respond frustratedly.

"All right then, have a good day," she answers chipperly before hanging up.

Disgusted, I put my phone down on the counter and begin rummaging through one of the top drawers behind the desk. I have a collection of health pendants somewhere in one of the drawers. My ex-fiancée gave me a handful of them before we broke up.

"Aha!" I exclaim as my hand clasps around one of the ruby red and gold pendants. I slam the door shut and run around the counter, catching myself before I trip over Bailey who decides to move between my legs mid-step.

"Take this." The man has now coughed up so much bubbling green foam it can fill the small trashcan I keep behind the counter.

The man seems too distracted to hear me, so I reach across the puddle and pry open his free hand, ignoring the scratch I get across my palm from his overly sharp nails and smash the pendant into his hand, re-curling his fingers around it. I watch as the amulet glows bright, getting brighter the longer he holds it.

"Well, this can't be good," Sven comments from where he now stands next to me.

I didn’t hear him coming from across the shop, so I jump when he speaks.

After several seconds, the goblin’s coughing slows and the liquid stops coming out of his mouth, for which I am extremely grateful for, because now that I am standing here, the smell is getting to me. It is something between wet dog and microwaved fish.

"Do you know what would do that?" I murmur to Sven.

Sven shakes his head as he strokes his long beard, making the two beads hanging in it clack when they hit each other. "No. But my knowledge of magic isn't great. At least not this type of magic."

We both stare at the goblin as his coughing slowly turns more toward wheezing. I look away from him long enough to glance at Bailey, still standing, peering around the counter. The expression on her face and the fact her hackles are still up concerns me. Normally once magic subsides, she goes back about her business. The fact she is still watching sets off warning bells in my head. Not to mention the smell is getting stronger and I have no idea what the best way to clean whatever it is up. I don’t even want to think about how long it is going to take to clear the smell from the shop.
