Movie Review: Enola Holmes (2020) on Netflix

Enola Holmes (2020)
Netflix Streaming: Sep 24, 2020
Director: Harry Bradbeer
Producer: Millie Bobby Brown, Paige Brown, Alex Garcia, Ali Mendes, Mary Parent
Writer: Nancy Springer
Cast:
Millie Bobby Brown, Sam Claflin, Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter, Fiona Shaw
Runtime: 2h 3m
Rating: PG-13 (Some Violence)
Genre: Mystery And Thriller
Production Co: PCMA Productions, Warner Bros., EH Productions, Legendary Entertainment
While searching for her missing mother, intrepid teen Enola Holmes uses her sleuthing skills to outsmart big brother Sherlock and help a runaway lord.

Charming! I watched Enola Holmes with my husband. It was an entertaining and family-friendly show.

The movie is based on the young adult novel series by Nancy Springer. There are currently six books in the series.
Enola is Sherlock's sister. He left home (along with an older and not as smart brother) when she was very young. Enola is just as smart and gifted as Sherlock and her mother raised her with all the tools she would need to be her own person, which in 1882 London isn't something women were allowed to do. There is a strong theme of fighting for social change against those who would love to stick to traditional ways. There is an excellent scene between Sherlock and a woman shop owner (Susie Wokoma). She informs him he doesn't see what's wrong with the world because from his privileged POV life is great.

Millie Bobby Brown does an excellent job as Enola. I enjoyed the character breaking the fourth wall throughout the movie, often in The Office style. If you want to watch it for Henry Cavill you might be a bit disappointed. He pops up throughout the show but he is more of a side character--a very good looking side character ;)

If you want something light-hearted and sometimes silly to watch then give this one a try.

Book Review: Burning Ash (Forgotten Brotherhood Book 3) by N.J. Walters

September 21, 2020
Publisher : Entangled: Amara
226 pages
No one is more surprised than Asher, one of the oldest vampires on Earth, that he's attracted to vamp hunter Jo Radcliffe. She's smart, a talented slayer, and she's gorgeous. Something about her pulls at him, like no one ever has before. For a man, whose name strikes fear in everyone—this is something new and intriguing. And quite possibly deadly, if she discovers his secret.

Jo has two things in common with the handsome Asher—they are both slayers and someone is messing with them in a very-much-trying-to-kill-them way. She's not so happy about joining forces with a dude she doesn't know. But he's sexy as hell and really good at his job as one of the Forgotten Brotherhood, whose business it is to execute misbehaving paranormals.

She knows she's bait in a larger plot to harm Asher and the Brotherhood. And there is nothing he won't do, no line he won't cross, to keep her safe—which may be the weakness that destroys them both.

Each book in the Fury Unleashed series is STANDALONE

I haven't been this excited to talk about a paranormal romance in a long time!

Burning Ash is my introduction to author NJ Walters and to the Forgotten Brotherhood series. While I could tell that I had missed two intense and interesting stories, I was able to get the gist of what had gone down (I'm still going to put the first two books high up on my TBR list though because I need deets!).

Asher and Jo's story is part of a larger plot that encompasses the series but no worries, there are no cliffhangers in the book, just an excitement for the next book. At least for me, there was excitement.

Where to begin with what I loved about this book? How about with Asher himself? When it comes to popular vampires in romance, the majority of them are brooding, mysterious, and a bit glum. Asher is totally different. He's ancient, like old-as-dirt ancient but you wouldn't know it because this vamp is fun, flirty, and has a sense of humor. He might have a few moments here and there of deep internal thoughts but this is a vamp that can still find things to smile about. Like a certain tacky reality show. Honestly, Asher was a great character to introduce me to Walters' work and he'll be difficult to beat.

Jo's no slouch either. I can't get enough of fully capable, butt-kicking heroines like her. She's tough on the outside, a true survivor, but on the inside, she's as vulnerable as they come. Jo's smart as a whip, snarky, and it takes a lot more than a vampire to frighten her. Some of my favorite scenes in Burning Ash were just Jo kicking butt. She's definitely no shrinking violet and while she's only human, she can stand and fight with Asher and his supernatural buddies.

But who am I kidding? It was the romance between Asher and Jo that really sold me on this book and this new-to-me author. An ancient vampire who falls in love with a shoot-first-don't-bother-asking hunter? And it's more than just the opposites attract theme; it's the way the author handled their first meeting and the development of feelings between them. Asher's charmingly sarcastic first words to Jo almost get him shot and stabbed. From that moment, the banter and connection between them were just as addictive for me as a reader as it was for them as characters.

As a member of the Forgotten Brotherhood, Asher is hanging with a very reclusive, exclusive crowd. They're the deadliest creatures around. The ones that garden variety vampires, weres, and demons fear because they're the boogeymen who will come for them if they've stepped out of line. Meeting two other members of the Brotherhood put Asher's personality in stark contrast. Maccus and Bjorn are exactly how I expected them to be at first. They're intense, moody, and mostly monosyllabic. In other words, I'm curious about them.

The writing in Burning Ash flows easily and takes time to take the reader through the journey but makes sure that every step of that journey is interesting, engaging, and has a purpose. I had such a good time that I finished this book in two days. It's definitely one of the best books I've read this year and I can't wait to check out previous books in the series and to see what's next for this series.

EXCERPT:
A creature. Val tightened his fist.

She hadn’t said the word, he had. But he knew that was what witches and warlocks thought of him and his brothers.

And while he couldn’t care less about the opinion of others, he was expecting more from her. But no, she was only here to study him.

As he grimly stood in the Sanctuaire’s chapel, he watched her pour over a giant paper map of the city. She had stretched it over the altar, bordered it with five black candles and speckled the surface with anvil dust mixed with bone powder. A handful of railroad spikes and the hypodermic needle that had pricked Emmeline lay at the center.

His mind was on the witch instead of whoever had been after his blood.

He just couldn’t let it go. A future high priestess. Sounded like Marianne Thibodeau had forgotten to mention a few things about her granddaughter.

It shouldn’t matter. Really. Already her essence was fading from his veins. The gentle touch a waning memory.

Yet here she stood above the map. Her jet-black hair tied into a loose braid fell over one shoulder, the thick strand ending just at the tip of her breast. The small and high curve was much too defined under the small black t-shirt. The fabric of her top thin enough that he could make the outline of a small push-up bra.

Stop it, diable! Focus on the job. His balled fists and pained breath didn’t go unnoticed.

“You need to feed, Valerian.” Father Grégoire was right beside him, a heavy hand on his shoulder while his eyes went from Val to Maisie. The priest knew exactly how the immortal felt, the woman drawing both a surge of lust and hunger deep within him. His insides twisting and growling.

Val lifted a defiant chin at his friend. “We have time.”

Interview: Young Adult Scifi Author Zachary Astrowsky + giveaway

Where were you born/grew up at?
Born and raised in Scottsdale, AZ

If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?
There are many things in life I like to do, besides procrastinating. If I knew I was going to die, I would spend my last day visiting a beautiful site with my friends and family creating an everlasting memory.

What are you passionate about these days?
I am passionate about many things such as lacrosse and writing, but lately, I am most passionate about finishing my sequel which is due out this fall!

What do you do to unwind and relax?
Hang out with friends, watch tv, play lacrosse, and listen to music.

Do you have a favorite movie?
I definitely have a favorite movie but my top three movies based on their creativity are: #1 Deadpool 2, #2 Inception, and #3 Interstellar

Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?
The Uncontrolled and the sequel due out this fall.

What can we expect from you in the future?
Writing over the last few years and thinking about my books, I have gathered several book ideas. When I have the time in the future, I hope to have another book or series again, within the science fiction genre.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?
All stories are people-stories meaning every story we read is based on real-life experiences no matter how absurd the story line is. Therefore, many of the characters in my book are based on friends or people I have met. The story itself is something I created when I was 10 years old. I was very impressed with The Flash and found some of the topics to be cool and trendy concepts within science fiction adventures.

Where did you come up with the names in the story?
Mainly friends but Hazel’s name was based on a social media contest. I created a post asking all my followers to submit a name for the lead female in the trio of teenagers. I looked at all the names and narrowed them down to my top two favorites and then asked them to re-vote. Hence, Hazel was born!

If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?
The main character, John, the protagonist, is a difficult casting call. I definitely have ideas for the remaining cast, however. Chase, John’s sidekick, could be played by Jack Dozer or Asher Angel. Hazel can be played by Millie Bobby Brown. Crofar, the antagonist, could be played by Alex Pettyfer.

What did you edit out of this book?
The final chapter, hence the sequel! The edited out chapter which has never been seen by anyone will be available for free by those that read The Uncontrolled and tag me on their social media account.

What book do you think everyone should read?
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak because while it’s not within the sci-fi genre, it is written amazingly well with creative characters which makes the book unique and something I’ve never read before.

How long have you been writing?
I started writing when I was 10 years old. Then I became focused on my manuscript when I was 12 years old and I have been writing ever since.

Do you see writing as a career?
Possibly. I am interested in many things right now so it’s hard to pick a career path. As of now, I am interested in science, mainly, astrophysics, which sparks my interest in writing science fiction. My hope is to write and be a scientist someday. BUT, I am 16 years old and don’t have everything figured out yet.

Pen or typewriter or computer?
I use my laptop with an accompanying monitor which allows me to view several documents at once. This is useful if I need to research a topic for my book.

Advice they would give new authors?
Always plot out your book before writing, but be flexible to change because as you write, the plot could stray away from what it was originally intended. Always write sincerely and be realistic. You are entertaining people of all kind!

Do you believe in writer’s block?
Yes, most writers experience writer’s block where they feel unmotivated to write. When this happens to me, I look to other creative projects such as film or tv. This also lends itself to the necessity to read other genres as it will help you with your own.

The Uncontrolled: Hiding Can't Save You From Robotic Smiles
by Zachary Astrowsky
August 18, 2020
Genre: YA Cyberpunk SciFi
Tracking Devices, Mind Control, and Visions of the Future

An action-packed adventure set against the loss of free will that comes from a mind control serum.

The robotic way people smile is John's first inclination that things are not quite as they seem in Amber City.

At the age of fourteen, everyone is "vaccinated" with a biological implant that makes people controllable. John is supposed to get his shot the very next day, until he and his parents find out about the mind-controlling chip requiring his family to devise a plan to put a stop to this once and for all, but things don't go exactly as planned.

Along with his friend Chase, and an irrepressible girl named Hazel, the three of them find themselves in the world of the controlled, where they must try to escape the notice of this powerful society and its leader, Crofar. As the trio of teenagers attempt to defeat Crofar on their own, they stumble upon the Renegades, a formidable group of "the uncontrolled," led by Maximus.

Warily forming an alliance with the teenagers, the numbers are not in their favor, and the uncontrolled are barely holding their own. Until that is, they realize they have a secret weapon. John starts to have regular visions of the future, which can change in interesting ways when certain variables are adjusted.

While John has visions they can use to win the war against Crofar, things become complicated because Crofar has visions too. With two adversaries who can see the future, only one can outsmart the other.

The Uncontrolled is an adventurous, sci-fi book written by award-winning teen author Zachary Astrowsky.

When I went to refill my cup, I heard a noise. At first I thought that my stomach made the noise, but I wasn’t hungry at all. So, I put the glass of water back into the fridge and stood there in the dark, just listening. Maybe this is just my imagination, I thought, trying to steady my nerves. But then I heard the noise again. It was the sound of rustling in the bushes outside, which fit the terrifying sight of two dark images standing in the yard. (pg.17)

About the Author:
It all began on a trip to NYC when I was five. I couldn't read yet, but I wanted to understand every sign and billboard I saw. I began putting letters together and for my birthday a few months later, I was requesting the fourth book in the Harry Potter series. Reading allowed my mind to explore and create stories, and as a young child I began filling them with colorful characters and sharing them with anyone and everyone who would listen. Since then, I’ve progressed quite a bit to formulating longer and more complex stories and eventually completing my first novel, The Uncontrolled.

Book Review: Darkkin Queen (A novel of the Demon Accords – Book 16) by John Conroe

Darkkin Queen (A novel of the Demon Accords – Book 16)
by John Conroe
May 30, 2020
Pages: 335
Book 16 of the Demon Accords. Tatiana Demidova - natural born vampire, Coven royalty, fighter, CEO, mate of the God Hammer, Fallen Angel... mother. She wears many hats, balances diverse duties, multi-tasks like any other woman, except most of those don't face demons from Hell, monsters from Fairie, alien invaders, or pissy world leaders. Follow Tanya through a week of her busy life as she works to save the her children, her mate, her friends, stockholders and the very world, in that order.

Darkkin Queen is set in the perspective of Tanya which is something we haven’t seen a lot of in this series and it was refreshing to see things through her eyes. The most important thing in her life, next to her Chosen is her kids. When the powers of the world decide that threatening those closest to her will help them achieve their goals the aftermath could be world ending.

Declan and Stacia have become a vital part of saving the world from the Vorsook, if the governments of the world, Fairie, and their own team doesn’t alienate them from the mission than there might be a chance of saving most of the humans on the planet. As Declan’s powers have grown so has his concern on how they are used. Omega, however, has no qualms about taking over countries if they aren’t going to play nice with others which is somewhat concerning to the team.

The Demon Accords series has grown over the years and is still one of my ultimate favorites.

October 1, 2020

Ellinor Rask has wanted one thing for the past eight years: vengeance. But when Ellinor is captured, she finds herself dragged back into the world she walked away from, entangled once more with friends she would rather forget.

As if that weren’t humiliating enough, Ellinor learns first hand that her magic can be stripped away by a piece of bio-tech—and her ex-boss is happy to leash her with the technology in order to get what he wants. If Ellinor behaves, the device will be removed. All she has to do is deliver a package. One containing a creature created from raw magical energy and discarded technology. Simple, right?

But when her goals start getting people murdered, Ellinor has to decide if the year’s planning, her honor, and even her own magic, are worth the lives it’s costing. Dodging ruthless gangsters, she finds herself on the run with a creature of immeasurable magical abilities alongside her one-time friends. Now, Ellinor must relearn to trust the people she once abandoned. She must put her faith in technology, and her life in the hands of independent contractors, all while racing to deliver the package before it gets taken by force, or worse, the creature decides to make an appearance itself.

EXCERPT:
THIS WAS not the first time Ellinor Olysha Rask found herself bound and chained, and she very much doubted it would be her last. This was the longest she had ever been incarcerated, however.

Ellinor leaned back against the wall and closed her eyes, though it made no difference in the pitch black. She wiggled against the rough wall, never getting comfortable. The restraints clamped over her wrists chaffed at her skin. She lost count of the days she’d been locked in the rank cell, but she supposed it didn’t actually matter how long she’d been there, only how much longer she’d be staying.

She sighed loudly, her patience long gone. Not that she had been blessed with an abundance of composure to begin with, but her restraint had diminished considerably since Misho’s death.

Heaviness settled on her chest and shoulders as she imagined Misho’s disapproving tsk at her current predicament, and her chin started to quiver. Gritting her teeth, she knocked her head against the bumpy wall to focus her thoughts. She always lost control when she thought about Misho Shimizu, and she didn’t want to lose what little control she had left. She needed to conserve her energy.

For what? There’s no telling how long I’ve been here, or who took me. Time to stop waiting.

She hadn’t recognized who grabbed her, or how they had gotten the drop on her. She had been drinking, of course, but no more than usual. One minute, Ellinor was meeting with a contact who had information about the Ashlings she was hunting. Ashlings who needed to answer for what was done to Misho. The next? She couldn’t remember. The air—her own power!—had betrayed her. Everything went white and hazy, and a fog rolled over her memories.

She sat up straighter against the wall, breathing deeply, ignoring the aches and pains of her cramped muscles. Whatever had happened, poisoning or a knock over the head, had left her weak. Concentrating had been a chore, let alone summoning her magic. She knew she wasn’t at full strength, but better to do something than continue to wait around for whoever had nabbed her to remember they had her locked away.

Ellinor had heard of humani, beings like her, who were strong enough in air magic to blow apart buildings, and who had the skill to dismantle the most intricate of machines without destroying any of the delicate parts. Ellinor had never been that strong, nor that finessed with her talents. She had enough of the talent to make her someone most would shy away from, and it had been more than enough for her job. Using the air, she could turn otherwise fatal blows from knives or projectiles away, and coupled with her own abilities for creating mayhem, her magic had served her well, or well enough, until Misho died.

Then her power turned her into someone, something, most didn’t want to talk about. Someone the remainder of her family distanced themselves from. She lived only to avenge Misho.

The seersha, though . . . now they would have no trouble using wind to blow apart this cell, no matter how far underground they’d have to pull the air. They’d be able to use that same current to wrap themselves in an impenetrable force field then simply sail away like some cocky bird.

That didn’t mean she couldn’t cause some trouble, though.

Second Look Book Review: The Nowhere Witch (Tales of Xest Book 2) by Donna Augustine

The Nowhere Witch (Tales of Xest Book 2)
by Donna Augustine
August 28, 2020
252 pages
Getting back to Xest was the easy part. It’s staying here that seems to be the problem.

I have three hags, also known as Xest Immigration, hot on my tail trying to deport me back to Salem. The wall I built in the Unsettled Lands is in jeopardy. Hawk, a man who was once my ally, can’t decide if he wants to lead the horde trying to drive me out or kiss me. Not to mention, everyone keeps calling me the Nowhere witch, and I’ve got a bad feeling it’s not a compliment.

But when the betrayals start rolling in, I realize I’ve got bigger problems. Staying alive becomes the most important issue of the day.

The Nowhere Witch is a wonderful follow-up to the Whimsy Witch Who Wasn’t in the Tales of Xest series by Donna Augustine. Tippi begins the novel by unceremoniously finding herself returned to Xest after having secured passage home, whether she wanted to be there or not. Tippi finds herself at home in Xest and has a renewed faith to make it work this time. I loved her renewed faith in herself, against all odds, she continues on, obstacle after obstacle, to carve her place in Xest and with the citizens. With her powers still unreliable, she seeks help from friends and the not-as-friendly.

I really enjoyed this book, Donna Augustine writes perfectly flawed heroine’s coming into their own, Tippi’s journey in The Nowhere Witch shows her resilience, her strength, her will. This was a great sequel and I feel it’s poised for a significant reveal in the next installation – which I’ll be so excited to read!

Donna Augustine was an odd child, had a brief moment of conformity in early adulthood and then decided to embrace her craziness as the years rolled by. It's her inner crazy that she credits with coming up with the ideas for her books. One part hypochondriac, a few dashes of paranoia, topped with a sliver of uptight and delivered with a relaxed flair, she kicked the proverbial box down the yellow brick road a couple years ago to embrace her true self.

She can be reached by a carrier pigeon, set free in a south by north direction, where she resides in Neverland with her two Siberian cats. Cats who, by the way, aren't as hypoallergenic as she believed they'd be.

Hades finds himself faced with the impossible—proving his future bride wrong. Regardless of his efforts, there are forces who wish to keep the two apart and Hades comes to realize he will do anything for his forbidden love, even defy Fate.

EXCERPT:
It’s time for terms, Hades.”

He scowled and sat back in his chair, glaring. Aphrodite threw her head back in laughter.

“Someone does not like to lose.”

Her words were like a poker in his side. Hades did not actually mind losing. He lost all the time when he bargained with mortals, but he had not wanted to lose to Aphrodite.

The goddess pressed a finger to her chin and offered a soft hum, as if she did not know what to ask of him. She was wasting his time. She knew what she wanted, but just as he was about to bark at her, she spoke.

“Fall in love, Hades. Better yet, find a girl who will fall in love with you.” Then Aphrodite clapped and exclaimed, “That’s it! Make someone fall in love with you!”

Hades’ jaw tightened, and Aphrodite stared back as if she wished to see to his soul in turn. Her terms were insulting. If it were that easy to fall in love, he would not be alone now.

“Is this your idea of a joke?” he asked, his voice quiet and calm, despite the anger twisting his insides. He was going to have to torture someone just to release the tension in his body.

“Not a joke,” she said, raising a thin blonde brow. “You’ve offered love advice. Follow it.”

Not a joke then, but retribution. She was frustrated with him for offering his opinion on her marriage.

“And if I can’t meet those terms?”

Her smile cut across her face wickedly.

“Then you will release Basil from the Underworld.”

“Your lover?” Hades could not keep the disgust from his voice. They’d just spent the last few minutes discussing her love for Hephaestus, and here she was asking for a man—her hero, to be exact. Basil had fought and died for her in The Great War. “Why? Don’t you want Hephaestus to admit that he loves you?”

She glared at him. “Hephaestus is a lost cause.”

“You haven’t even tried!”

“Basil, Hades. He is who I want.”

“Because you imagine yourself in love with him?”

“What do you know of love? You’ve never loved in your lifetime.”

Those words did not hurt, so much as embarrass him. He leaned toward the goddess.

“Basil loves you, that is true, but if you don’t love him in return, it is meaningless.”

“Better to be loved than not at all,” she countered.

You are a fool, Hades wanted to say. Instead, he asked, “Are you sure this is what you want? You have already petitioned Zeus for a divorce, now you have asked me to resurrect your lover in the event I cannot meet the terms of your contract. Hephaestus will know.”

Aphrodite was quiet, and he recognized her uncertainty in the way she toyed with her lip.

Finally, she answered.

“Yes. It is what I want.” She took a deep breath then and managed a smile. “Six months, Hades. That should be enough time. Thank you for the entertainment. It was…invigorating.”

With that, the Goddess of Love vanished.

Prologue
Lativia Spellwood sat on her ghostly throne of branches on the summit of Mount Katribus, with many other ghosts swarming around her reminiscing about life and drinking wine.
The ghosts of Witchland residents always came to this clearing after they died to stay near Lativia for guidance and to wait until they were ready to pass on to the afterlife. Lativia had been dead for hundreds of years but had still not passed on, for her work overlooking Witchland and its forest was not yet done. One day, it would be, and she was beginning to welcome that time, for she was growing very tired.
A tiny troop of Leekin faeries moved about the arms and legs of Lativia’s throne, placing flowers into the holes between the woven boughs. They did that every day, as a way to honor her as Queen of the Forest.
Lativia sipped from a goblet of ghost wine, enjoying the blue fire as it spread down her throat, engulfing her in tingly warmth. Being a ghost was always cold; the magic wine was one of the few momentary sources of warmth that she could cherish.
“What else do you need, my queen?” chirped one of the Leekins, buzzing on tiny brown wings before her nose.
Lativia smiled. “I think it’s time I checked on Sarah, don’t you agree?”
The Leekin nodded excitedly and flew off into the woods. A huge bunch of Leekins soon returned, flying in formation to carry the weight of a glowing crystal ball. They lowered it to Lativia’s lap, where it sank through the spectral outlines of her legs. Lativia could pass through things, and things could pass through her, for her physical body was long gone and all that remained was her powerful soul
Lativia smiled even more broadly and began to draw her transparent ghostly hands over the ball, summoning the blood bond she shared with her descendent, Sarah Spellwood.
Gradually, the fog inside the ball began to clear and an image of Sarah’s frizzy explosion of red curls filled it. Lativia drew back a few feet with her mind and saw Sarah was at a coffee shop ordering a vegan sandwich. Sarah’s love and respect for animals always made Lativia proud. She noticed there was a conspicuous pale and indented band of skin on Sarah’s ring finger where her huge diamond wedding ring had once been. “That no-good husband of hers is finally gone!” Lativia crowed with delight. But then she noticed that there were bags under Sarah’s eyes, the bags of someone who had been up all night crying. Sarah must be heartbroken, Lativia thought with a heavy heart.

The barista serving Sarah froze when she saw Sarah’s last name on the credit card receipt. “Um, are you related to . . . ?”
Sarah drearily raised her hand. “Yep, I’m descended from Lativa Spellwood.”
“That’s amazing! I mean, have you ever been to Witchland and looked at the Lativia memorabilia?” The barista’s pigtails wiggled with her excited body language, and Lativia felt a swell of pride that people still remembered and even revered her. It had been four centuries and she was still honored as the greatest witch of New England, the one who had turned into a wolf and fought her way free of her captors at the Salem Witch Trials!
“Yep,” Sarah said, her voice full of annoyance. It was clear she was ready to dash out of the coffee shop.
As good of a lawyer as Sarah was, Lativia noticed how awkward she was around most people, and how little she liked to disclose personal details, especially of her magical ancestry.
Sarah was a woman of facts and logic, which is why she fought the magical powers pulsing through her like a current, trying to pull her back to her destiny. Her resistance to her true self and her stubborn adherence to logical facts made her unpopular with many people. Lativia yearned to watch Sarah blossom into her beautiful potential.
“Don’t you see?” Lativia cried. “You are not meant to be in New York! You should be here, following your calling, completing my work as a witch! You’re not happy there!” But Sarah couldn’t hear these words.
“Yes, yes,” several Leekins agreed. A ghost who was standing near Lativia also nodded his head.
Sarah trudged out of the coffee shop, carrying her drink and the sandwich in a paper bag. A man in a trench coat bumped into her, and she hastily checked her pockets to ensure he had not pickpocketed anything. Then she continued on to her office, a massive steel gray prison with spikes in the window ledges to repel pigeons. There was no sign of life anywhere but for the scraggly maple planted out front of the building and a few waxy tropical plants blooming inside the lobby. Lativia groaned, feeling the despair and coldness of the place.
“It’s time for you to come here, to your destined home,” Lativia declared. “My Leekins have told me about the Hunter tracking lynx and the land surveyors, and I sense that there is about to be trouble in the forest.”
At the mention of the Hunter, the Leekins gathered around her throne began to turn blue and tremble in terror.
“I am not strong enough to fight these battles much longer, so I need you to come home, to come into your true self. Your marriage fell apart of its own accord, and I sense your job is about to unravel on its own, too. You can’t fight destiny,” Lativia said, giving the group of hovering Leekins their crystal ball back and shutting her eyes. “I could use magic to bring you to your destiny sooner, but it is evil to interfere with one’s life that way. I can only hope you don’t take much longer.”
She opened her eyes as the Leekins cried, “We need her!”
