303 pages
Genre: Historical, Romance, Victorian

Penguin Group (USA) LLC
Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, is back solving new cases in the Victorian-set mystery series from the USA Today bestselling author of The Hollow of Fear.

As "Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective," Charlotte Holmes has solved murders and found missing individuals. But she has never stolen a priceless artwork—or rather, made away with the secrets hidden behind a much-coveted canvas.

But Mrs. Watson is desperate to help her old friend recover those secrets and Charlotte finds herself involved in a fever-paced scheme to infiltrate a glamorous Yuletide ball where the painting is one handshake away from being sold and the secrets a bare breath from exposure.

Her dear friend Lord Ingram, her sister Livia, Livia's admirer Stephen Marbleton—everyone pitches in to help and everyone has a grand time. But nothing about this adventure is what it seems and disaster is biding time on the grounds of a glittering French chateau, waiting only for Charlotte to make a single mistake...

“These books, which recast Sherlock Holmes as Charlotte Holmes, are perfect for those who adore layered stories. Unignorable questions of gender, expectation and privilege lurk beneath complex mysteries and a slowly scorching romance.” – The Washington Post
“Fast-paced storytelling and witty prose add further appeal for those who like their historical mysteries playful.” – Publishers Weekly

About the Author:
Sherry Thomas writes both historical romance and young adult fantasy.

On the romance side, she is one of the most acclaimed authors working in the genre today, her books regularly receiving starred reviews and best-of-the-year honors from trade publications. She is also a two-time winner of Romance Writers of America’s prestigious RITA® Award.

On the young adult fantasy side, there isn’t much to report yet, her debut book, THE BURNING SKY, book 1 of the Elemental Trilogy, has received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and been named to the Autumn ’13 Kids’ Indie Next List.

Sherry writes in her second language. She learned English by reading romance and science fiction—every word Isaac Asimov ever wrote, in fact. She is proud to say that her son is her biggest fanboy—for the YA fantasy, not the romances. At least, not yet…

Book Review: Blood Truth (The Black Dagger Legacy Book 4) by J.R. Ward

Blood Truth (The Black Dagger Legacy Book 4)

As a trainee in the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s program, Boone has triumphed as a soldier and now fights side by side with the Brothers. Following his sire’s unexpected death, he is taken off rotation against his protests—and he finds himself working with Butch O’Neal, former homicide cop, to catch a serial killer: Someone is targeting females of the species at a live action role play club. When the Brotherhood is called in to help, Boone insists on being a part of the effort—and the last thing he expects is to meet an enticing, mysterious female...who changes his life forever.

Ever since her sister was murdered at the club, Helaine has been committed to finding the killer, no matter the danger she faces. When she crosses paths with Boone, she doesn’t know whether to trust him or not—and then she has no choice. As she herself becomes a target, and someone close to the Brotherhood is identified as the prime suspect, the two must work to together to solve the mystery...before it’s too late. Will a madman come between the lovers or will true love and goodness triumph over a very mortal evil?

Boone is a trainee in the Black Dagger Brotherhood and has done an excellent job as a soldier as he fights with the Brothers. Unexpectedly, Boone’s sire dies and against his wishes, he is taken off of rotation, but he’s allowed to work with Butch, a former homicide cop to catch a serial killer. The killer is targeting females at a live-action role-playing club and one of the biggest surprises for Boone is meeting a mysterious female that he is extremely drawn to.

Helaine has been trying to find her sister’s killer, no matter the danger that it puts her in and when she meets Boone she is unsure whether she can trust him or not. As the search for the serial killer progresses, someone close to the Brotherhood is a prime suspect and Helaine hopes for closure in her sister’s death.

Often the Legacy books focus more on the trainee’s than the Brotherhood and I liked how this book really brought the world’s together. Getting to know more about Boone, opened some doors to future storylines that could have different implications for the Brothers and the trainees. Ward’s writing is phenomenal and riveting making her books a personal favorite.

TWO BOOKS this month. Oh my! With best-selling author Linda Thomas-Sundstrom + giveaway

TWO BOOKS this month. Oh my!
With best-selling author Linda Thomas-Sundstrom

So exciting…

Look what’s being born this month, Sheepsters.

Out this weekend...
The Blood Knight Chronicles book 2, Immortal Obsession, is a new twist on the Arthurian/Holy Grail legends, and a bunch of “Top Picks” and 5-star advance reviews.

And the holidays kick in on October 15th with…
Strange Holiday Spirits (a wickedly quirky new urban fantasy boxed set for folks who want something a little different from their reading experience).

I am thrilled to be able to chat with you about these book birthdays. Releasing a book just never gets old, or less of a headrush. I’ve had 38 book birthdays so far, to date, and can’t wait for these. Getting stories told and into your hands is what this writing gig is all about. Connecting. So I do hope you’ll give them a try.

The Blood Knight Chronicles series is in the paranormal suspense genre, where action and danger abound, and darkness hides trouble. Golden Vampire (July 2019) was the first in this series, but all of them are standalone books really.

IMMORTAL OBSESSION (book 2) is set in London, where an American newscaster on the job wants to help find three missing girls… and discovers that London is loaded with beings that aren’t quite human. My Blood Knight in this series is to die for if you like danger and legend mixed together. Christopher St.John is the lead here, and he’s a soul that has existed since the times of the Round Table, getting better and stronger as the centuries go by, and still on a quest that will tangle him up with that red-haired newscaster.

Ah… and then there are the upcoming holidays. And what would 🎃Halloween (Samhain) and 🎄Christmas be without a hard twist on those celebrations? *smiles*

STRANGE HOLIDAY SPIRITS is a really pretty boxed set of three wickedly tweaked urban fantasy stories. Here, there are witches and werewolves in Salem, gargoyles, banshees, and angels on top of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and a Recruiter from the Dark Side who is going after Santa Claus in New York. (Did I mention the talking elevator with attitude?) Not comedies, but a different kind of dark fare.

If you didn’t get to Notre Dame Cathedral before the fire, you can see its upper decks here, (called the Gallerie des Chimeras), and imagine what it looked like. One of the stories in this boxed set was conceived there, on that upper deck.

If you need more of an explanation about the Blood Knight Chronicles series, here it is:
A long time ago, a group called the Seven was formed from seven of the best knights of the Round Table. These knights were offered immortality in order to protect a holy relic known as the Grail.

Seven immortal knights, protectors of the Grail, will live through time until we find them now, in the current century…. in this series. Called “Blood Knights” because of the way they became immortal. If not exactly righteous, something close, with the will to protect humankind from monsters that lurk in the shadows of a modern world.

One Blood Knight per book in this series. Seven books.

Here are the three titles: Trapped in Stone, De-Witched, and Hot Holiday. Each of these is also available individually in ebook formats, but here’s the thing:
💥This boxed set is on pre-order for just 99 cents until release day on Oct 15th.💥

Book love.

So……… I smile as I write this, because I love the holidays, and I love Arthurian tales, and I love writing books. There just couldn’t be a better gig than hanging out with all of those things, and with you. (Except maybe for chocolate and pink champagne).

Got questions? Leave them here. And maybe you’ll want to enter the birthday gift giveaway of a signed print version of one of my other books in the Blood Knight series. Immortal Redeemed – also a “top pick” from trusted review sites, and published by the HarperCollins/Harlequin Nocturne paranormal line.

Happy reading!

Movie Review: El Camino; A Breaking Bad Movie

El Camino; A Breaking Bad Movie

In Theaters: Oct 11, 2019  Limited
Cast: Aaron Paul, Jesse Plemons, Charles Baker (II), Matt Jones, Jonathan Banks, Larry Hankin
On Disc/Streaming: Oct 11, 2019
Runtime: 122 minutes
Studio: Netflix
Rating: NR
Genre: Drama, Mystery & Suspense, Television
The Netflix Television Event EL CAMINO: A BREAKING BAD MOVIE reunites fans with Jesse Pinkman (Emmy-winner Aaron Paul). In the wake of his dramatic escape from captivity, Jesse must come to terms with his past in order to forge some kind of future.

Aaron Paul brings Jesse Pinkman back to life in El Camino. Picking up where Breaking Bad left off, Jesse finds himself on the run and desperate for safety. Through a series of flashbacks, events from his captivity come to light. Although Jesse has never been a saint, he has always been a pretty good guy with pretty bad luck. El Camino doesn’t do much to dispel that trend.

I really enjoyed the movie, it was tense and gritty and sometimes uncomfortable, many old favorites make appearances, both the living and the dead (thru flashbacks); it was quick paced and pertly acted. I loved the closure this movie brought.

Comic Review: Ghoster (The Gallowing Part 1)

Ghoster (The Gallowing Part 1)
Oct 1, 2019
Writers: Thom Burgess, Toby Meakins
Art: Joe Becci
45 pages
Genre: horror graphic novella
A young man attempts to survive The Gallowing, the deadly initiation into the secret Guild of Ghosters, five families of  Malevolent hunters that have protected Britain from evil spirits for centuries. To complete his mission and join the ranks of his ancestors he must hunt down a Malevolent in the most haunted house in London or die trying.

Acclaimed comic writer Thom Burgess (Malevolents, The Eyrie) and award-winning filmmaker Toby Meakins (Breathe,  Floor 9.5) have teamed up to create GHOSTER - A dark, supernatural world with a rich hidden history that spans centuries and reaches across continents. A world where the malevolent spirits that feed on the pain, suffering and death of humans are only kept at bay by an almost extinct band of malevolent hunters, who literally become ghosts to hunt ghosts.

Part 1 The Gallowing is illustrated by Joe Becci, who’s unique style and use of shadow have set the tone for a sinister and exciting ride into the world of Ghoster.

You can also follow the world of Ghoster and its creators on their TwitterInstagram, and Facebook pages.
Read for FREE

"Once upon a time or so it's said, a Ghoster came to hunt the dead."

I was scrolling through twitter when I ran across the image above and this quote. AND it was going to be released online for free! Yeah, I was all over this.

The comic opens with a scene from a horror movie. Eyeballs, why'd it have to be eyeballs?! *shudder* There are two young men preparing for an initiation into The Guild of Ghosters, a secret society of ghost hunters. They've kept Brittian safe from Malevolents (ghosts) for centuries. Ghosters have the ability to enter the tenebrate--a netherworld between the dead and the living--and kill Malevolents. Things go horribly wrong...of course!

The writers have created an interesting urban fantasy and the Gallowing Part 1 gives us a look into this macabre world. There are a few mysteries shown, and a possible conspiracy--we are talking about a centries old secret organization.

The artwork is what makes this story shine. When Ghosters go into the tenebrate they essentially become spirits with a steampunk look unique to their family line.
See the guy watching them in the last panel? Yeah, mystery and conspiracy! I loved the way the artist uses color and shadow to differentiate between the tenebrate and the living world. The overall tone is haunting and dark in both worlds.
This is a great start to ghostly urban fantasy I'm ready to experience. Forty-five pages seem like a lot but the story/action moves quickly and it's over too soon. At the end of the comic, there is a glossary of terms.

I don't know how much of this series will be free, but you can download Part 1 for free on their website.

Excerpt: Winter King (The Wyth Courts, #1) by J.S. Dark + Giveaway

Review Coming Soon

Winter King (The Wyth Courts, #1)
by J.S. Dark
October 9th 2019
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance
His court is dying, and she’s his only hope …

Monsters of the Tywyll Forest have poisoned the Winter Court, unleashing a prophecy that demands a human sacrifice to save the withering land. Willing to do whatever it takes to save his people, King Cadewyn of the Winter Court ventures to the human world in search of one insignificant life to claim…

Amber was used to her life being in shambles, but getting kidnapped and whisked off to a magical fae realm was a new low even for her. While feeling drawn to the fae King by a sizzling attraction, her apprehension builds to a panic when she finds out why she was brought there.

When Cade discovers that Amber is his mate, can he carry out his plan to sacrifice her? Or will the malicious plotting of others within the court leave Amber trapped in the mystical realm with nowhere to run?

Winter King is a standalone steamy paranormal romance with a HEA. Each book in the Wyth Courts series will feature a different couple, with a complete story, and a HEA. Suited for readers 18+ due to language and sex scenes.

I hadn’t expected movement in the middle of the night, but sure enough, the female human left her apartment building in a hurry just after four in the morning. She hugged a thin jacket over a tee and sweatpants. A second later, a taxi showed up and she boarded it.

Where in the freezing ice was she going at this time?

Regardless of my thoughts, I changed into my wolf form and followed her.

Just like I had done all day long.

Right after Haera told me how to save my people, I used my medallion to teleport to the human world. Haera had helped. She cast a spell over me, saying I would end up near the one I needed to save my court.

A selfless, pure-hearted human.

When she told me that, I scoffed. A selfless, pure-hearted human? Those were like myths. They didn’t exist. But Haera assured me I just had to get near the human and I would know.

The moment I saw Amber leaving the restaurant after being fired, with her long, black hair whipping on the chilly wind and her bright green eyes looking up at the clear skies full of hope and wonder, I knew it was her. Not because she was absolutely stunning and I couldn’t take my eyes off her, but because the pull I felt deep in my core told me that she was the one I needed.

She was the only one who could save my people.

Haunted Halloween Spooktacular: Downtown Flint’s Five Most Haunted Locations + giveaway

Downtown Flint’s Five Most Haunted Locations

Home to ancient Native American battle sites and burial grounds, the Sit Down Strike of 1936-37, unsolved murders, economic depression, social injustice, and a water crisis - Flint’s unholy brew of energy has led to macabre tales of ghostly encounters and stories of demonic possession.

Is there something sinister lurking in Flint’s history to blame for all the hauntings? Do the souls of Flint’s murdered linger, craving justice by haunting the land until they get their vengeance? Whatever the reason, Flint is filled with frightful sites and terrifying tales.

From ghostly graveyard apparitions in Glenwood and Sunset Hills to spooky specters spotted in downtown Flint’s Capital Theatre and The Whiting, Flint is filled with ghosts.

Here are downtown Flint’s Five Most Haunted Locations.

Stockton Center at Spring Grove

The Stockton Center at Spring Grove is a haunting example of Italianate architecture. The house first belonged to Colonel Thomas Baylis Whitmarsh Stockton and his family before becoming a hospital and then a nursing home. Considered to be Flint's most haunted location countless ghostly encounters have occurred in this building. Some believe the Stockton Family still reside in the home, Colonel Stockton himself watching over it for eternity.

The Masonic Temple

Officially dedicated in 1911, the Flint Masonic Temple is located in the heart of downtown. Shadowy figures, strange noises and the distant haunting sound of organ music fill this old building. Many who have worked in the building have experienced strange encounters and ghostly apparitions.

Whaley House

The Whaley House started life in 1859 as an Italianate but Robert Whaley hired an architect to transform it into a Victorian. In 1885 the Whaley family moved into the newly remodeled home. Levitating tarps, moving toys, ringing bells, curtains blowing with no wind, and shadowy figures fill this haunted mansion. In the basement, you may feel an unearthly chill and a sense of being watched.

The Capitol Theatre

The Capitol first opened its doors at 140 E 2nd St on January 19, 1928. Rumors of hauntings have swirled about The Capitol Theatre for decades. Strange knocking sounds, disembodied singing, shadowy figures…The Capitol’s recent renovations returned the building to its original glory. Did this calm the restless spirits or make them more active?

The Cornwall Building

Construction began on the house in the early 1870s by Royal Ripley who lived on premised from 1874 to 1881. In 1881 Er Milner purchased the home and completed construction on it in 1883. The ghost of Jennie Milner Cornwall is said to haunt the premises. Sometimes you can see her looking out the window.

Haunted Halloween Spooktacular! The Darkest Gateway by Jeri Westerson + giveaway

Shivery Playlist for a Creepy Halloween
by Jeri Westerson

I must confess, my playlist isn’t the typical fare of “Monster Mash” and “Love Potion Number Nine.” It’s about the soundtrack I like to listen to when I’m writing my paranormal tales. These are for my series Booke of the Hidden that takes place during all of the month of October and culminates on Halloween. The series wraps up with the fourth book, THE DARKEST GATEWAY. Tea proprietor Kylie Strange finds and opens the mysterious Booke of the Hidden, and must capture deadly creatures she's unwittingly unleashed, while juggling the advances of an alluring and dangerous demon and a very human and handsome sheriff. So I need different tunes to get me in the mood.

So let’s start with “Devils” from Say Hi. Because my urban fantasy deals with a supernatural Booke and a demon guardian who gets intimately close to Kylie, the song deals with the devil getting hold of everything in the singer’s life, even “he make it to my heart”—just like Kylie.

The next one is Valerie Broussand’s “A Little Wicked”, because Kylie and Erasmas Dark, the demon, do get a little wicked. Especially when she can’t decide between the handsome sheriff or the demon. Who would YOU chose?

And then there’s “In the Shadows” by Amy Stroup. This mysterious and evocative tune really takes you there. There may be humor in these books, but there is still something not quite right, not…quite…human going on. It’s a song that gives me the shivers.

And just to lighten things up—and because the First Werewolf comes out of the Booke and bites one of Kylie’s friends—there’s the incomparable Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London”. Who doesn’t like a werewolf with a pina colada in his hand “…and his hair is perfect.”

And finally, a haunting song that will spirit you away, right to the dark shadows of Samhain, Halloween, with all the dangers and powers that shimmer and awaken this night. Loreena McKennitt’s “The Mummer’s Dance” recalls strange and secret Celtic festivals in a darkened wood lit only by moonlight.

“Whoever said country life was dull didn’t know Moody Bog.”
With the arrival of Samhain, the supernatural Booke of the Hidden is set to release a barrage of deadly creatures onto the hapless village of Moody Bog, Maine.

Tea proprietor Kylie Strange knows the showdown is coming and wants to end the Booke for good. But the only way to accomplish this is a journey to the Netherworld and get the help of the only being powerful enough to destroy the Booke: Satan himself. And, though the brooding and elusive demon Erasmus Dark has captured Kylie’s heart against her better judgment, she ignores his repeated warnings that the mission guarantees her doom.

Series Book Trailer:

I moved to the very edge of the road and waited.

The sound grew louder. It couldn’t be anything except hoofbeats. They clopped, not in a gallop but in a leisurely canter. And soon, there was the Dullahan coming around the curve. His head looked even greener and slimier under his arm than it had before, if that were possible.

His weirdly roving eyes spotted me easily. He kicked his red-eyed horse’s sides and hurried toward us. All the while, he swung that spine whip. With each revolution around his headless neck, the weapon grew longer and longer.

I kept the spear close to my side. I didn’t want that whip to catch it the way it had gotten the crossbow the last time.
He was almost upon me when he shrieked, “Kylie Strange!”

“That doesn’t work on me, you idiot!” I yelled.

The face frowned under his arm. It cast its googly eyes toward Erasmus and opened his mouth to yell his name.

“He’s a demon, remember? We’ve been through this before. Boy, you sure have a short memory. Must be because your brain is decaying faster than the rest of you. Looks like a bad case of melting Roquefort you got there.”

His dead face either grimaced or it really was melting. “Then I don’t need to say your name,” he said in a high screechy voice.

He spun the whip. Before I could get out of the way, it came at me and wrapped around my body, trapping my arms at my sides. I barely got out a yell before I was yanked off my feet.

The horse started galloping and I was flung out behind it almost parallel to the road. I couldn’t bring the spear up. I was whipping around in the air and getting a little seasick, but it was better than being dragged behind on the asphalt. There wouldn’t have been much left of me after that.

The bones of the spine whip were digging sharply into my skin. I tried wriggling free. If Headless decided to fling me off a cliff, there wasn’t much I could do about it. I knew Erasmus must be around somewhere, but this was up to me to figure out…if I could.
The Dullahan galloped around a sharp curve and I was thrown and dragged through the limbs of pine trees shouldering the road.

“Dammit!” I yelled, spitting out pine needles. “I am so going to kill you!”

He lifted his head up with his other arm. It swiveled and glared at me. “Not if I kill you first, Mistress Strange.”

“No need to be so formal,” I grunted, struggling. I slammed into some holly bushes and OW!

The face cackled and turned away, tucked back under his arm again. Then I looked up and saw what he was cackling about. The next curve of the road didn’t have any nice prickly holly bushes or spikey pine boughs. It was just granite all the way up the rock face. “Shit!”
