So who am I? Well, I'm the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn't love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I still currently live.

Growing up in a small town, I learned a lot of values and morals, I also learned parents have spies everywhere and there's always someone to tell your mama on you. So when you get grounded, what is there left to do? Read! My Aunt Jo gave me my first real romance novel. It was a romance titled "Lord Margrave's Deception." I remember it fondly. But I also learned I had a deep and abiding love of mysteries and anything paranormal. As I grew up, I started to write just that and would entertain my friends with stories featuring them as main characters.

Now, I live Huntersville, NC where I entertain my family and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce...lol.

I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.

Excerpt: Something Happened by Brandy Isaacs + giveaway

I didn’t realize that being a writer could lead to funny and embarrassing situations in real life…

I live outside of Chicago and commute into the city every day for my 9-5er. I’m constantly listening to, and reading, multiple things at once. I usually listen to a book while walking, I read a book while on the train, and read comics at night before going to bed.

A weird habit I’ve developed since starting my writing career is to “act out” facial expressions of my characters. I. e. if my character wrinkles her nose, I probably will too. It gives me a feel for the character’s emotions and helps me stay in sync with them. This has bled over into my reading (or listening) as well.

Just a couple of weeks ago I was queuing up to get off the train one morning listening to a book (an awesome novel called Protect the Prince, the second book in the Crown of Shards series by Jennifer Estep—I highly recommend it). Anyways…a character in the book winked. Without even thinking about it—I winked too. As my eye opened, I realized I had made eye contact with an older gentleman on the train. His eyes got wide and he looked really confused. The only thing I could think to do was to blink a lot as if I had something in my eye.

So—never thought being a writer (and highly engaged reader) would lead to me accidentally winking at a man on the train and embarrassing us both. I’ve been laughing about it since then.

Rion Webster never knew she had a father, let alone a little sister. But, when social services calls informing her that her estranged father is dead, and her younger sister is now an orphan, she reluctantly opens her home. It doesn’t take long to realize Beckett is a troubled kid. Deeply troubled.

Unwilling to turn her back on the only family she knows, Rion struggles to help the child. Rion, more than anyone, knows the horrors of an abusive childhood, so she vows to stick it out for her sister. But, something is wrong with Beckett. Something more than just an abusive childhood.

If Rion and her friends can find out what happened, they just might save the child. But, who will save them from Beckett?

Excerpt:
From the moonlit window, she could tell the closet door was open. Rion’s heart slammed in her chest as she noted the empty bed. “Beckett,” she gasped. Hisses and grunts were coming from the dark closet but that was the only sound in the entire house. Every sound was blocked by the blood rushing in her ears and the struggle coming from the closet. She stepped into the doorway and the breath was stolen from her lungs. “Beckett!” she snapped.

The little girl was holding Link—the cat’s back to her chest—as she struggled to wrap long piece of cloth—a robe belt, Rion realized—around his neck. The other end was tied to the clothes rack. Link was struggling to claw or bite his way free. “Let go of him!” Rion snapped.

Beckett turned towards her and Rion froze again. The smile on the kid’s face was eerie enough, but something was wrong with her eyes. They were on fire with hate…and something else. Glee, Rion realized. The kid’s entire face was twisted into pure evil glee. It was as unnerving, as if a doll had come to life. Becket snarled and Rion could feel every hair on her body stand on end. Finding her voice, she dropped to her knees and growled. “I said, let him go.”

Finally, Beckett dropped the struggling cat and it bolted from the room. Fear and anger surged through Rion and seemed to push her out of her body. Everything was too much, too fast. She watched as she reached out and gripped Beckett by the shoulders. “What is wrong with you?” she roared through clenched teeth. She shook the girl’s shoulders, once, twice, three times. And on the third shake, reason returned. She needed to get the girl out of her hands or she would do something worse. Her arms felt like iron and her fingers claws, but she regained enough sense to push the girl away. Beckett stumbled backwards and landed in a pile of dirty clothes.

Rion stared at her in shock, the rage melting as she sucked in a heavy breath. What have I done? She waited for Beck to start crying. Screaming. Anything. Instead, the kid laughed. It was a guttural chuckle in a little girl’s voice. She struggled to right herself and Rion was reminded of the eighties horror movie about a killer doll. Beckett didn’t move like a kid. She moved with a horrific calm and purpose. Rion couldn’t move, or speak, she was stunned. By her own behavior and at Beckett’s. Once the kid was sitting up, she crossed her legs and stared at the floor. And didn’t make a sound.

As the seconds ticked by, everything grew still again. She let out a gush of air and flopped back onto her heels. She felt empty. Beckett had needed her and her response was to shake her. Beckett might not have even been awake. “Fuck,” she whispered. But what about her eyes? I’ve never seen someone look so cold and brutal before. Even the foster father who whipped her with a belt for forgetting to clean the bathroom didn’t look like he enjoyed it as much as Beckett did when trying to kill Link. Rion almost laughed at herself. Clearly, she had imagined it. She was in a panic and it is almost pitch black in here. A kid isn’t capable of that kind of villainy? Right? “Beckett?” The kid didn’t respond. “Beckett?” Rion tried again. “Let’s go back to bed.”

She reached out to lift the kid off the floor, but as soon as she touched her the stillness exploded. Beckett began screaming and flailing. It wasn’t a scream of fear. It was rage. The kid’s teeth were bared and her eyes were burning again. White fire scorched her neck as Beckett tried to claw her face. Rion jerked her head back in time and the tiny, razor-like nails missed their target but got her throat instead. She tried to restrain the kid, but, even though she was small, she was strong. And she had the advantage of surprise.

“Beckett!” Rion cried, wrestling with teeth, arms, fingernails, feet and legs all at once.  Stars burst in her eyes when Beckett’s head slammed into her nose. Her vision took a second to return and by the time it did, Beckett had scrambled away into the corner of the closet. Rion touched her nose, expecting her fingers to come away covered in blood. But, they were clean. Her eyes watered, but she didn’t think her nose was broken.

She watched Beckett for a moment. Can a night terror cause this? Wouldn’t she wake up by now? Rion had no idea—so she gave up. She knew fighting with the kid would only cause more damage. “Beckett…I’m…I’m just going to let you stay in here. I’m—I’m sorry. OK?”

Rion backed out of the closet. That was so fucked up. She sat on the edge of the bed and rested her head in her hands. When Chambers finds out about this I’ll be lucky not to be in jail. But, would Beckett even remember this? Rion’s skin crawled. She felt like a monster. She had physically attacked a kid she was supposed to be caring for. But, a reasonable voice in her head began, the kid attacked a cat. And she attacked you. Rion knew that was shitty semantics, but she found some comfort in it anyway.

Excerpt: Rest in Pieces (Barbie: The Vampire Hunter #1) by Lucinda Dark + giveaway

Rest in Pieces (Barbie: The Vampire Hunter #1)
by Lucinda Dark
November 25th 2019
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal, Romance, Urban Fantasy
Ashes to Ashes. Dust to Dust. If vampires kill your entire family, vengeance is a must.

I can’t say my parents never warned me about vampires. I just never believed them. Not—that is—until six months ago when vampires broke into my home and killed my family. Thanks to all the skills my parents taught me, I managed to escape but I couldn’t save them.

Two vampires down and the rest of the world to go.

My bid for revenge is going to have to wait, though, because until I turn 18, I’m being placed in the loving care of Elizabeth and Jonathan McKnight—godparents I didn’t even know existed. The clock is ticking until I can get back to my goal of eradicating the vampire race. But something is amiss at my new high school. According to my parents, vampires can’t walk in daylight. So, why then, does Torin Priest? If he’s not a vampire, then what is he? Because unlike the obnoxious asshole, Maverick McKnight, who sees me as some sort of bloodsucking leech on his wealthy family, Torin Priest is most certainly not human.

To stake or not to stake, that is the question.

EXCERPT:
Maverick pointed his finger right in my face. “I’m watching you, Barbie,” he spat my name like a curse. “If you try to steal from them, you’ll be out the door so goddamn fast, you’ll have burns on your ass from being kicked to the curb.”

“For your information, Maverick,” I said, using the same tone he’d used with my name, “I’m not here to find a new fucking family. I’m here because the government put me here. Comprende, dumbass? As a minor, I don’t have much of a fucking choice.”

“Choice or not.” He shook his head and fixed me with an outright glare. “You will not fuck with me. You will not fuck with my parents. You will stay the hell out of my way and out of my fucking business. Do you comprende?”

“Duly noted,” I replied dryly. “And since we’re on the topic of discussion, let’s make a deal—you and I.” Before he could agree or not on any sort of deal, I continued. “You stay out of my fucking way and I won’t kick your ass. And trust me, pretty boy, I may look smaller than you, but I would have you begging in a matter of seconds. If you don’t like me now, wait until I unleash my inner bitch. Therefore, if you wish to remain breathing, I suggest you back off,” I growled. “And in case you can’t understand that, understand this”—I stopped and leaned forward, moving into his space until I could smell a hint of his spicy cologne—“thou shalt not try me. Do so at your own peril.” He eyed me with no small amount of cold-blooded hatred. I didn’t give much of a shit. I moved back once more and jerked the door handle. “Now unlock the fucking door, Deputy Maverick, or you’ll see just what my inner bitch can do.”

W.I.P it Real Good: PNR author Alex Hayes + giveaway

WIP it Real Good
In addition to the main titles in The Chameleon Effect series, I have also written some tie-in stories. The first of these is The Golden Thread, a novella that introduces two of the Livran kids that Idris and Cadi (MCs from the series) will end up searching for.

Currently, I’m working on another tie-in story, Steel Strings. This novel is due to be released in December this year.

What is really fun and interesting about this story is that it happens concurrently with the first book of the series, Silken Scales. While Idris and Cadi are having their mad adventure in Silken Scales, Idris’ best friend, Marek, gets together with a girl called Brianna.

After completing Silken Scales, I really wanted to go back write Marek and Brianna’s love story. Steel Strings was supposed to be a novella, but morphed into something much greater, as these things often do.

As with the other titles in the series, Steel Strings contains a double meaning. One meaning refers to the strings on a cello, the other refers to metaphorical strings that signify finding strength and one’s own voice.

I wasn’t certain how I was going to successfully write from the point of view of a young black man (Marek), but I’ve found it a delight. As the story has progressed, his character and voice have blossomed. He played the best friend role in Silken Scales brilliantly, but in Steel Strings, he becomes a wonderful hero and love interest.

Here’s the story’s description…

Brianna Jones is pretty and popular…and that’s a problem.
If looks were her only asset, maybe she’d appreciate them more, but Brianna has a brain, a passion—and a project.
Inspired by her brother’s dismay over the lack of music in the lives of impoverished children, Brianna takes on the challenge to bring musical instruments to the needy.
She has a plan, but before she can bring her dream to light, she must combat her jealous sister, who has arrived home for the holidays on a mission to destroy everything Brianna holds dear.

Marek Lakewood is one of the few guys who sees Brianna for whom she really is, a girl with the intellect, creativity and talent to change the world.
Presented with the chance to work with her on a school project, Marek takes the leap and discovers Brianna’s life and aspirations are a whole lot more complicated than he ever imagined.

He knows he can’t compare to the guys she’s used to dating—including her current boyfriend with whom she has nothing in common. But maybe, if he appeals to her intelligence, he can find a way to earn her respect and win her heart.
Steel Strings will be released December 2019.

Excerpt: Wicked Fire (The Angel Fire Book 2) by Marie Johnston

Get your hands on a new paranormal romance from Marie Johnston today - WICKED FIRE is available now!

Wicked Fire (The Angel Fire Book 2)by Marie Johnston
October 21, 2019
271 pages
His thoughts are less than angelic around her....

Jagger Hancock is a fearsome warrior for the angelic realm, slaying demons left and right on Earth and protecting the human race. But when a powerful senator is murdered, he’s reduced to acting as a bodyguard for the grieving daughter. Too bad she’s the same female who ruined his one and only chance at happiness.

Felicia Montclaire looks as angelic as the rest of her kind, but she hides her scars well. Yet the male who gave them to her is not just after her again, but seeking conquest over the entire realm too. While her life goes up in flames once more, the last thing she needs is a cranky bodyguard…even if he’s the only one who can keep her alive.

Jagger and Felicia might not survive each other, much less the constant attacks from their enemies. But when danger drives them back to the angelic realm, they’ll discover their past is waiting for them—and it’s far more dangerous than anything on Earth.

Wicked Fire is book 2 in the Angel Fire series, an exciting new paranormal romance series by an award-winning author.

Chapter One
“The team needs me.” Julian Hancock, or Jagger to everyone but his mother, managed not to sound pleading as he addressed his former team leader. Bryant Vale was the warrior director now and less interested in hearing his arguments. “With you off the team and no replacement yet, my place is here.”

Jagger should be in his typical uniform of black tactical pants and a long-sleeved black shirt specially designed to fit around his wings. It seemed sacrilegious to sit in his boss’s office wearing a blue T-shirt and a pair of black athletic shorts. But it was necessary for his latest assignment.

He couldn’t take another day shadowing Felicia fucking Montclaire. She was in some danger he only knew vague details about and she’d demanded him as her bodyguard. Demanded. Like the spoiled priss she was.

Spoiled and superficial and haughty…and strong and gorgeous and willowy. Her legs went for miles and haunted his dreams.

He clenched his jaw and steadied his gaze on his new director. Felicia Montclaire was only an obstacle to what he really wanted. Someday, he’d have his own team to lead and he couldn’t do that stuck among humans, babysitting the aimless daughter of a senator.

A flash of guilt flared. Felicia was still technically a senator’s daughter, but her father had been murdered a couple of months ago. She’d weathered the news well, but then he hadn’t expected her to get weepy or be derailed by her grief. He hadn’t expected her to show any feeling at all. And he’d been right.

His director, Bryant Vale, was as expressionless as a wall. A dark, glaring wall. “I understand your complications with Ms. Montclaire—”

“Forget our history,” Jagger gritted out.

He hated that anyone knew the story between him and the vexing angel he was protecting. Or rather, the lack of a story, the result of Ms. Montclaire not setting the record straight and letting everyone think he was a cheating asshole.

“The team needs me.” He said it as much for himself as to make a point. “If Felicia truly requires protection, then she should stay in the realm, in a designated home, with a designated guard.”

Director Vale’s demeanor had hardened as soon as Jagger had cut him off. Damn. Jagger had meant to use a lighter touch, not charge in like a bull at his first sight of red. “Sit down.”

Jagger took his time selecting the backless seat across from the obnoxiously large mahogany desk. He draped his wings over the edge but couldn’t force them to relax. “Director Vale—”

“Shut it.” You could take the warrior off the team, but you couldn’t soften his personality. Director Vale leaned across the desk, his eyes blazing. “I can’t believe you’re dense enough to think that Felicia is safer here. She can help identify her attacker and lead us to the people behind the conspiracy against this realm. The ones who could tell us just what this conspiracy entails. Have a think on it.”

Jagger refused to drop his gaze, and that was a harder challenge than most when Director Vale was pissed. The scars encompassing half the male’s face didn’t make him easy to look at on most days.

The director wasn’t finished. “Her family’s mansion was burned to the ground by angel fire while over half our team was inside. While my mate was inside. Director Richter—” His gaze cut away. Leo Richter was no longer the director. He’d lost both legs at the knee thanks to the fire and was still recovering. “Felicia can hide among the humans better than in our realm. Numen isn’t safe for her. And do I need to go into the main reason why you shouldn’t be tied to the investigation, why you’re too close to the case?”

Jagger’s teeth should’ve cracked under the pressure of his jaw. His father, James Hancock.

His good-for-nothing, cheating father, who’d risked their entire race by spilling the news of their existence to his human side piece. His father, who’d had several human side pieces, and probably a few angelic ones, while he’d had a committed mate.

His father, who’d had his wings taken, been declared a fallen, and tossed out of the realm forever.

His father, who was working with the creatures of Daemon to take over Numen, the realm where his own son resided. If he were a weaker male, he’d feel like his father had chosen the demons of Daemon not only over the angels of Numen, but over him too. Now the man would work with anyone or anything if it served his agenda. Archmasters, symasters, sylphs—the new “Jameson Haddock” didn’t seem to discriminate.

But then if Jagger had ever meant a damn thing to his father, then perhaps Jameson would still be an esteemed senator of Numen.

Not that his father’s multilayered betrayal affected him.

He kept his voice even. “Our team is two short. Dionna took over as leader, but we no longer have you, and with me tied up…” Literally, if Felicia had her way.

His team was everything to him. Having lost his father so young, and his mother… Well, Chanel Hancock wasn’t known for her nurturing nature. She’d turned twice as cold and ten times harder than marble after what she referred to as “your father’s unfortunate choices.”

“I understand.” Director Vale sat back. “But they aren’t functioning as a traditional warrior team, not until this is over. They—you—are under my personal direction. You’re the only ones I completely trust now.”

The director’s unwavering trust mollified him. For now. He’d grown up getting side-eyed by his peers, as if they wondered when he’d follow in his father’s footsteps. And then he’d weathered the Felicia storm, which had broken the trust of the one most dear to him. Without those experiences, Director Vale’s words wouldn’t have meant as much.

To still have Bryant Vale in his corner after they’d learned his own exiled father was the one behind the trouble in the realm was humbling.

And he needed to make sure he continued to earn it.
Even if he had to deal with the fallout of the maelstrom that Felicia Montclaire brought to his life.

Excerpt: Taming Demons for Beginners (The Guild Codex: Demonized #1) by Annette Marie + giveaway

Taming Demons for Beginners (The Guild Codex: Demonized #1)
by Annette Marie
September 13th 2019
Dark Owl Fantasy Inc.
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy
Rule one: Don’t look at the demon.

When I arrived at my uncle’s house, I expected my relatives to be like me—outcast sorcerers who don’t practice magic. I was right about the sorcery, but wrong about everything else.

Rule two: Don’t listen to the demon.

My uncle chose a far deadlier power. He calls creatures of darkness into our world, binds them into service contracts, and sells them to the highest bidder. And I’m supposed to act like I don’t know how illegal and dangerous it is.

Rule three: Don’t talk to the demon.

All I had to do was keep my nose out of it. Pretend I didn’t find the summoning circle in the basement. Pretend I didn’t notice the shadowy being trapped inside it. Pretend I didn’t break the rules.

But I did, and now it’s too late.

From the author of The Guild Codex: Spellbound comes a new series that will plunge an unprepared young woman into the darkest magic of the mythic world.

EXCERPT:
I snapped the Demonica guide shut and replaced it under the table, then scooped up my remaining cookies and walked across the hardwood floor. I stopped two long steps from the summoning circle, the dome-shape interior filled with inky, impenetrable shadows.

I held up a cookie.

“This,” I announced, “is a double-chocolate brownie cookie. It’s delicious, and I’ll give it to you if you answer a question for me.”

Silence from within the darkness.

“I answered your question,” I added accusingly.

Quiet lay upon the room—then a soft, husky laugh.

“A question, hh’ainun?” the demon crooned. “What would you ask?”

Doubts trickled through me. This was a bad idea, but I plowed on. “Do demons lie?”

“Ch,” it replied, a sound of cold amusement. “Zh’ūltis question. Ask another.”

I frowned. “What does zhuh-ool … what does that word mean?”

“Stupid. Stupid question.”

My frown deepened into a scowl. I rephrased. “If it’s true that demons don’t lie, why is that?”

A long pause, but it wasn’t the same silence as before. My skin prickled, instinct warning that a predator’s attention was locked on me.

“Tell me truths and lies, hh’ainun.”

“What?” I asked blankly.

The demon said nothing, waiting.

Brow furrowed, I searched for harmless things to say. “I moved here six days ago. I miss my college classes. My favorite class was biology. I enjoy baking for my family.”

“Moved here,” the demon repeated in its swirling accent. “True. Miss your … college,” it enunciated carefully, as though unfamiliar with the word, “true. Biology … lie.”

My eyes widened.

“Your family.” It rolled the last word as though tasting it. “Lie.” “No,” I said. “That one is true.”

“Lie,” the demon repeated with certainty.

“You’re wrong. I love baking for my family.”

“Zh’ūltis.”

“Did you just call me stupid?” I clenched my jaw, then relaxed. “You didn’t answer my question.”

“I did.”

“No, you didn’t.” Glaring, I took a deep breath. “Fine. Whatever. If that’s your idea of answering a question, I won’t bother asking any more.”

I stepped closer to the circle, knelt, and carefully set the paper towel of cookies on the floor. Keeping my body as far away as possible, I nudged a corner of the paper across the silver inlay, then snatched my hand back. This was the closest I’d ever come to the circle.

A soft scuff against the hardwood emanated from the darkness. The paper towel twitched, then slid into the black dome.

Icy blades of fear cut through me. Suddenly, the demon was no longer a voice—it was a physical being. Something alive and solid and real that could pull the cookies into its prison cell. My gaze rose from the floor where the treats had disappeared to the curved black wall.

A spark of red in the darkness.

Flames burst to life and shot upward in a hungry blaze. I flung myself back. As I landed on my butt, the brief flare lit a shape within the black—the dark outline of shoulders, the edge of a jaw, the plane of a cheekbone.

Burning crimson eyes caught the light and glowed.

The fire died as quickly as it had appeared, and the dome was once again filled with impenetrable darkness, the demon hidden within. Gray fluff fluttered out of the circle—ash. Flakes of ash. The demon had burned the paper towel.

I scooted across the floor, then pushed onto trembling legs. Without a word or a backward glance, I ran through the door and pushed it shut behind me, swearing never to return.

An hour later, as I lay in bed, trying to sleep, all I could see was the demon’s dim outline—and those eyes that had glowed like hot coals, like magma erupting from a volcano’s heart.

Excerpt: Shadow Caster (The Nightwatch Academy #1) by Debbie Cassidy + giveaway

Shadow Caster (The Nightwatch Academy #1)
by Debbie Cassidy
September 10th 2019
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Urban Fantasy
Murdering humans is a huge no-no and comes with an off-with-your-head sentence. Doesn’t matter if you don’t remember doing the crime.

I killed a human, and no, it wasn’t on purpose, but that shit doesn’t matter to the council. I’m facing death. So, when I’m offered a deal to avoid execution, I’d be a fool not to take it, even if it means leaving the human world and urban life behind to enroll in the Nightwatch Academy – a gothic monstrosity hidden from human eyes, located way too close to the largest tear in the fabric of our reality.

It would be fun if I had any inclination of becoming a member of the Watch or supporting the shadow knights at keeping the Formorian threat at bay. But heck, the monsters beyond the mist aren’t my problem. I have personal demons to deal with.

Once I’m out, the Watch can shove it.

But one sip from the ceremonial goblet and my plans to coast are out of the window as my powers spark to life.

I’m an anomaly, one the Watch won’t be letting walk any time soon.

My only comfort is a man who prides himself on his ability to harness pain. Battle scarred and formidable, he’s my tutor, my mentor, and the object of some super saucy dreams. He’s completely off limits and my only hope of surviving my first test.

I’ll need to harness my powers fast.

There can be no distractions.

But when my fellow cadets start going missing then returning with no memory of who they used to be and my best friend is taken, turning a blind eye is no longer an option.

Allies are limited when you’re a freak. Luckily, I don’t need a cheer squad to get shit done. Whoever is responsible better watch out. I’m coming for them, and I’ll be bringing the pain.

The Vampire Academy meets Game of Thrones in this kick-ass, supernatural academy, Urban Fantasy Romance.

EXCERPT:
“Wake up, Indie.”

A hand landed on my shoulder and had the audacity to give it a shake.

Fuck off was the desired response, but the word that came out was harrumph.

“Indie, come on. You promised you wouldn’t miss today.”

Today? Oh, yeah, the team exercise, as in there is no I in team, as in I didn’t give a shit. But the exam was the last lesson of the evening, and my bio clock told me the sun had only just set.

Still, Minnie’s shadow loomed over me, and the heat of her gorgon glare burned holes in the back of my head.

“The whole day, Indie. You promised to do a whole day.” She reminded me with that stern edge to her tone, which told me that ten-inch-thick steel would break before she would.

Me and my big mouth. Maybe if I faked sickness, she’d piss off and leave me be. Going to shitty classes was the last thing I wanted to do tonight.

I coughed and made a gagging sound.

“Nah-uh,” she said. “The whole frickin’ day and the exam. You skip the test, and we all get a fail. And you don’t want me to fail, do you?”

Urgh. Emotional blackmail, which coming from anyone else I’d be immune to. I rolled onto my back and stared at the pixie-cute woman looking down at me. Her crimson bob grazed her delicate jaw as she leaned over me, and her wide jade eyes were hard with determination.

Over the last two months, I’d learned three things about Minnie Faraday. First, that she wasn’t a stuck-up arsehole like the rest of the Faraday family. Second, she had a soft spot for kittens, and anything small and furry, and third—the most important—that she did not take no for an answer.

Trust me, I’d tried to keep her at a distance. I mean, sharing a room with her didn’t mean we had to be friends. I didn’t need or want any friends here. But Minnie had decided that’s exactly what we were going to be, and she’d pursued me unrelentingly until she’d worn me down.

So, here we were. Two friends in a glare off. One I knew I was about to lose, because yeah, I’d promised not to skip out on the simulation today. Team exercises were graded based on team performance, if one member was a no show, the whole team suffered.

I closed my eyes and blew out a breath. “Fine. Give me five minutes, and I’ll meet you in the lobby.

“Five.” She narrowed her eyes. “I’ll be back to get you if you don’t show.”

I flashed my teeth at her. “Have I ever let you down, pixie -boo?”

“Do not call me that.” She crossed her arms. “You know I hate it.” She sniffed.

“Riiight. So, you just wrote it in the back of your notebook and decorated it with tiny flowers for no reason then?”

She opened and closed her mouth a couple of times and then took a deep breath. “Five minutes.”

She grabbed her book bag and headed out of the room.

The door didn’t slam behind her.

Not too pissed off then.
