Excerpt: The Cardinal Code: Absolution (The Cardinal Code, #2) by Avery Sterling + giveaway

The Cardinal Code: Absolution (The Cardinal Code, #2)
by Avery Sterling
April 17th 2026
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal, Romance
The Cardinal Code: Absolution continues the dark, seductive saga of the Cardinales—an elite society of vampires whose influence shapes governments, history, and the hidden world beneath human civilization.

Paislee Sullivan never wanted power. She only wanted Michael. But loving a man born into a secret dynasty of blood and control means standing in the shadow of everything he represents.

When Michael Chamberlain is summoned to London, he’s pulled into a political struggle rooted in ancient bloodlines and forbidden truths. As old laws are challenged and long-buried secrets begin to surface, Paislee finds herself no longer at the edge of his world—but at its center.

The deeper she is drawn into Cardinales society, the more dangerous her presence becomes. To some, she is leverage. To others, a threat. To Michael, she is the only thing that has ever mattered.

Bound by love and hunted by forces determined to preserve the Order’s control, they must confront a truth the Dominium has spent centuries suppressing.

Because some bloodlines were never meant to merge.

And loving each other may cost them everything.

EXCERPT:
Paislee leaned her head on Michael’s shoulder.

“You didn’t look surprised by that envelope.”

“Because I wasn’t.”

“What is it?”

“An invitation,” he said, lacing his fingers through hers and brushing her knuckles with his lips.

Her head lifted. “An invitation for what?”

“To Etxe Bakarra.”

“What’s that?”

“A celebration they hold every year—but barely understand. It was hand-delivered. Required my signature. Which means I must attend or face consequences.”

She studied the envelope, running her fingers over its embossed seal. “It’s beautiful. What is Etxe Bakarra?”

“A celebration of unity. Of peace.”

“Are you required to attend every year?”

“No.”

“Then why now?”

“Because the harvest moon aligns with the autumn equinox. It’s incredibly rare.”

She blinked. “Harvest moon, autumn equinox . . . the Order sounds mystical.”

He chuckled. “It’s their favorite bedtime story.”

As the car hummed down the avenue, she turned the envelope over in her hands.

“You didn’t even open it.”

“I know what it says.”

“I’ll open it, then.”

Her eyes skimmed the elegant script inside. Then she paused. “Michael . . . why is my name on it?”

He went still.

“Right under yours. It says the invitation extends to ‘Michael Chamberlain and companion, Paislee Sullivan.’”

He reached over and took the invitation from her hands. His easy charm shuttered, replaced by something darker. Calculating.

Michael stared out the window for a long moment.

“They want to see you,” he said quietly.

Paislee frowned. “Why?”

“I don’t know.”

A pause hung between them.

She rested her head against his shoulder, listening to the steady thud of his heart beneath the fine weave of his jacket. He didn’t speak again, but he didn’t have to. She could feel it in the way he held her hand tighter than before—the silent promise tucked into his touch.

Whatever this celebration meant, whatever game the Order was playing, she was now a part of it.

Review:
O_O (my face when I was offered a review copy, LOL.) I mean, how could I not? Look at that title! Look at that cover...nom nom nom.

Okay, time to get serious. Let's talk story. Woodstake is Dracula-coded. The main vampire is never named, but it's Dracula. Other characters' names are plays on some of the original book characters. But there is a Van Helsing. The vampire lore is also consistent with the book.

The prologue might smell a little like Dracula but it is an imaginative, fresh take from chapters one to five. It covers the vampire's journey across the ocean to escape Helsing in 1927. He lands in upstate NY and almost dies (again). One groovy page is used to transition the story from 1931 to 1965 and the start of chapter one.

The story picks up with Jonathan Harper and Nina Murray making the cross-country drive to NY for Woodstock with two other friends. Over the course of the five chapters, our crew's story crosses paths with the vamp and the characters' relatives from the prologue. The songs playing in the background of each scene are shown so you can imagine the story's soundtrack while reading.

Does the vamp dress like a hippie and take acid? Does he meet Jimi Hendrix? And if so, does he eat him? You'll have to read it. This is a spoiler-free review.

At the end of chapter five, we are teased with Woodstake '99! How far-out is that sequel idea?

The artwork is a mixed bag. It looks like they used a 3-D model program and digitally painted them. I've seen it used in online comics. The characters look life-like in some panels, but sometimes stiff. In other panels, they look more painted, if that makes sense... Not my favorite style, but once I got into the story, I adjusted to it.

I was born in 1967, so I don't remember much about the '60s, except what I learned from the media (music, TV, movies), and the fashion made a cool Halloween costume "Peace out." Woodstake captures the '60s vibes, the good and the bad.

5 "And that's the way it is." Sheep

OMG! You can get the whole digital series on sale!

The print version is on pre-order.

Book Review: A Death So Lovely (Kissed by Darkness Book 2) by Harper A. Brooks

A Death So Lovely: A Dark Vampire Romance (Kissed by Darkness Book 2)
by Harper A. Brooks
February 5, 2026
I never asked for this.

Lucian Vale stole my life when he gave me his blood. I should hate him for it, but now that I’m a vampire, every day is a battle between loathing him and wanting him. Between freedom and surrender. The pull to him is stronger than anything I’ve ever known.

At first, I despised what I had become—the hunger, the shadows, saying goodbye to my old life. But the more I fight it, the more it owns me.

The more he owns me.

Secrets at VMR run deeper than I imagined, and the answers I’ve been chasing are finally within reach. But Lucian’s past has returned with a vengeance, and an old rival is determined to drag us both into a war I’m not ready to face.

This time, Lucian can’t protect me from what’s coming. But I’m not scared.

Because with him, even death can be a lovely thing.

Amazon

A Death So Lovely by Harper A. Brooks is the latest edition in this ongoing spicy PNR. It's fast paced at under 200 pages and picks up right after book 1.

Since I did not read the first story, it was a little bit of "huh?" for me until I kinda got the idea of how the first story went down. This book is SPICY though, let me tell ya. Get a fan ready. Was there an actual story? I dunno, it got lost in the whole drama of who hates who and the mafia parts. Kind of threw me. A lot of "inner dialog" which was okay but maybe fleshing out the actual story line a tad more would have gone a long way.

This story came at one of those moments for me where the plot was second to the romance, bondage and attraction between our leading couple. There is of course a story line, I'm messing around some. But the main point of this one is vampire romance.

Hopefully the next installment will add more depth and characters development. I wanted to give this one a stronger rating, but it really is what it is at this point.

Vampire King Nikolai is a centuries-old ruler whose name alone strikes fear in anyone around him. Ruthless and enigmatic, he’s used to solving problems with blood deaths. Vampires! Penguin Speculative Fiction Series (Penguin Classics) + hardback giveaway

Penguin Classics is proud publish reissues of some of the most blood-thirsty fiction written in a special Speculative Fiction Series: Bram Stoker’s DRACULA; John Polidori’s THE VAMPYRE, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s CARMILLA; and THE GILDA STORIES by Jewelle Gomez.

Designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith, the Penguin Clothback classic Speculative Fiction series are bound in high-quality colorful, tactile cloth with foil stamped into the design.

Vampires have always served as dark mirrors for our desires and fears: immortality, seduction, contagion, otherness. From the flickering shadows of early cinema to today’s blood-soaked prestige dramas, they remain eternally potent. Recent box office juggernauts like Sinners (2025) and the Nosferatu (2024) remake prove that the horror genre—and the vampire in particular—is not just back but evolving.

Hit television series like FX’s What We Do In the Shadows and AMC’s Interview with a Vampire reveal the comedy of life through the lives of the undead. Vampires don’t just instill fear – their presence brings up questions about power, identity, and transformation.

THE GILDA STORIES

by Jewelle Gomez
Foreword by Jewelle Gomez
Afterword by Alexis Pauline Gumbs
On sale: 10/14/2025
ISBN: 9780143138921
Hardcover, Penguin Classics
336 Pgs
First published in 1991 and now presented in a lush hardcover format for the first time, THE GILDA STORIES stands as a revolutionary redefinition of the vampire mythos. Beginning in 1850s Louisiana, a young Black woman escapes slavery and is initiated into a chosen family of immortals. Over two centuries, she traverses America—never killing for blood, always seeking belonging. With themes of ecology, queer identity, and intergenerational memory, Jewelle Gomez’s enduring novel has only grown more prescient. This edition features a new introduction that situates GILDA as both counterpoint and heir to DRACULA—a heroine of compassion and agency in a genre often defined by predation.

Author Bio: Jewelle Gomez is a writer, an activist, and the author of many books, including Forty-Three Septembers, Don’t Explain, The Lipstick Papers, Flamingoes and Bears, and Oral Tradition. The Gilda Stories was the recipient of two Lambda Literary Awards and was adapted for the stage by the Urban Bush Women theater company in thirteen U.S. cities.

Alexis Pauline Gumbs (afterword) is the author of Survival Is a Promise: The Eternal Life of Audre Lorde, several works of poetry, and Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Animals, which won a Whiting Award for Nonfiction in 2022. In 2023, she won a Windham-Campbell Prize for her poetry.

THE VAMPYRE
by John Polidori &
by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu
Foreword by V.E. Schwab
Introduction by Nick Groom
On sale: 10/14/2025
ISBN: 9780143139003
Hardcover, Penguin Classics
192 Pgs
Collected for the first time in a deluxe, unified edition, these foundational tales reveal the vampire’s earliest steps into English literature. THE VAMPYRE (1819), with its cold, aristocratic predator, established the blood-drinker as a figure of both allure and death. CARMILLA (1872), by contrast, introduced the seductive lesbian vampire—a narrative of queerness, intimacy, and isolation still echoed in film and fiction today. With a historically rich introduction from V.E. Schwab and rare contextual material (including Alaric Watts’s original preface), this volume bridges myth and modernity.

Author Bio: John Polidori (1795–1821) was born in London to an Italian immigrant father and English mother. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University, graduated at the age of just nineteen, and in 1816 became physician to Lord Byron. He accompanied Byron on a tour through Europe, famously spending the summer at the Villa Diodati in Switzerland where they regularly met with the poet Percy Shelley, his partner Mary Godwin (later Shelley), and her half-sister Claire Clairmont. It was here that Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein was inspired, influenced in part by Polidori’s conversation and behavior—as recorded in Polidori’s diary. Although Polidori’s fractious relationship with Byron led them to part ways, they remained on cordial terms until the publication of Polidori’s tale ‘The Vampyre’ in 1819, which was willfully misattributed to Byron by the publisher Henry Colburn. Polidori was attempting to realize his literary ambitions by publishing ‘The Vampyre’, extracts from his diary, a volume of drama and poetry, and a novel begun at Diodati (Ernestus Berchthold; or, The Modern Å’dipus). However, the controversy surrounding ‘The Vampyre’ sank his writing career and he published little else. He died by his own hand in 1821.

Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814–1873) was born in Dublin to staunch Protestant parents descended from French Huguenots. He studied law at Trinity College Dublin, and while he maintained a somewhat desultory legal practice after graduating, his chief energies were directed towards fiction and journalism. He published his first novel, the historical adventure The Cock and the Anchor, in 1845, and edited a number of newspapers during his lifetime—notably the Dublin University Magazine, in which he serialized his own stories and, despite his Irish nationalist tory sympathies, took a relaxed editorial line. He found his distinctive authorial voice in mysteries and thrillers such as The House by the Church-Yard (1861–3), Wylder’s Hand (1863–4), and Uncle Silas (1864), and in his collections of uncanny and supernatural tales—most famously In a Glass Darkly (1872)—which are often haunted by Irish politics and history. Known as ‘The Invisible Prince’ in Dublin due to his solitary and nocturnal lifestyle, Le Fanu died a recluse in 1873.

Vitoria “V. E.” Schwab (foreword)
is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than twenty books, including the acclaimed Shades of Magic series, the Villains series, the Cassidy Blake series and the international bestseller The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.

DRACULA
by Bram Stoker
Foreword by Robert Eggers
Introduction by Karen Winstead
On sale: 10/14/2025
ISBN: 9780143138990
Hardcover, Penguin Classics
480 Pgs
Terror, eroticism, and gothic excess—Dracula is the hallmark of our cultural understanding of vampires. With a new foreword by Nosferatu (2024) director Robert Eggers that situates the novel in conversation with modern fears—bodily autonomy, gender, and contagion—DRACULA emerges as more than just the origin of the vampire hunter mythos; it’s a fevered dream of Victorian repression and desire, rendered timeless.

Author Bio: Abraham 'Bram' Stoker (1847 - 1912) was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and joined the Irish Civil Service before his love of theatre led him to become the unpaid drama critic for the Dublin Mail. He went on to act as manager and secretary for the actor Sir Henry Irving, while writing his novels, the most famous of which is Dracula.

Robert Eggers (foreword) is an American filmmaker and production designer. He is best known for writing and directing the historical horror films The Witch (2015) and The Lighthouse (2019), as well as The Northman (2022) and Nosferatu (2024). His films are noted for their folkloric elements, as well as his efforts to ensure historical authenticity.

Karen Winstead (introduction) is professor of English at Ohio State University. She is the author and translator of a number of books, including Fifteenth-Century Lives: Writing Sainthood in England (2020), and teaches on Special Topics in Film and Literature (“Monsters Without and Within”) and Special Topics in Popular Culture (“Vampires”).

Book Review: Road Trip with a Vampire (My Vampires) by Jenna Levine

Road Trip with a Vampire (My Vampires)
by Jenna Levine
September 23, 2025
AN INSTANT USA TODAY BESTSELLER!

A vampire who can’t remember his past and a witch with secrets of her own hit the road in this zany, cross-country romantic comedy from beloved author Jenna Levine.

Reformed bad witch Grizelda “Zelda” Watson had hoped to never see another vampire again when she slipped away to sunny California for a fresh start. She'd grown tired of them and their nonsense ages ago. But when a vampire with amnesia unexpectedly shows up on her doorstep with a letter from her old friend Reggie, and asks for her help, she can’t say no. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Peter Elliott is tall and gorgeous, looks great in yoga shorts, and has the kind of dark hair and surly expression Zelda’s been a sucker for for hundreds of years.

Peter isn’t completely harmless—he is fanged, after all—but he’s harmless enough, and soon becomes the only person in Zelda’s new life who knows the truth about what she is. If she can help him decipher the cryptic notes in his journal, the only clues to his lost memories, she might as well try before sending him on his way.

But when an alarming message from Peter's past coincides with a clear sign that Zelda can't keep running from her own, they embark on a cross-country road trip for answers—only to find what they're looking for in each other.

Road Trip with a Vampire by author Jenna Levine is certainly a fun rom-com with a vampire and not my usual read. Having a break from the hard-hitting action-packed adventure books was really fun!

I could almost feel the wind in my hair on this one. Loved the whole "road trip" aspect of the story. Made me want to jump in the car and just see what's out there! Maybe some vampires for me too!

A vampire with amnesia was interesting to read, with how experiences are all new again, breathing some undead life back into the bloodsucker. Enjoyed all the fun stops along the way and the folks they met out in the world. Restaurants that are freaking entertaining and food selections that I would sure try. At least once!

There's for sure a ton of adventure and twists as the story moves along, added to the heat that builds between our main couple. Loved this one for all the right reasons and look forward to reading the next installment!

The Baritone’s Rival by J.B. Warrick Excerpt
Oscar retrieved a plastic bottle of alcohol and gauze pads from the island. He crouched down next to Trent. His cheek was right by the man’s broad chest.

“I don’t think you need stitches, but this is going to hurt a little.”

Trent nodded, although Oscar thought he might be drifting off. He poured a few drops of alcohol on a pad and touched it to the topmost cut.

Trent breathed in sharply, his hands gripping at the sides of the chair and his eyes snapping open.

“Fuck.”

Well, he was awake now. Oscar worked as fast as he could, but he wouldn’t risk infection. His fingers made their way across the damaged skin tenderly. Tenderness was not something Oscar had known much of, or something he trafficked in, but seeing Trent there brought it out in him.

He just wanted his classmate to be okay, for his smooth, pale skin to be unmarred by scars and injury. He had to reverse the wound, to make it as if it had never been. He didn’t know why it was so important. Trent had said he’d been in vampire fights before. Still, something about touching him like this made Oscar’s chest open up. It felt raw, unprotected, to be caring for Trent in this way.

When he hit one particularly tender area, Trent yelped in pain, and Oscar’s heart leapt into his throat. Why was he having this reaction? He wasn’t squeamish. He’d killed vampire and human alike. Was it just that he was responsible because Trent had saved his life? Every sigh and moan caused another crack in Oscar’s cool facade.

When the cuts were clean, he covered the area with a large piece of cotton gauze, holding it in place with medical tape. Oscar stepped back to admire his handiwork. Trent looked almost rugged with the bandage. It was a contrast to his innocent, midwestern face and sun-kissed skin. And it was sexy as hell.

Oscar forced away the thought. This man despised him and clearly had a thing against vampires in general. He was straight! Yet Oscar couldn’t help drinking in the sight of Trent as he relaxed against the wooden chair with his eyes closed.

“How are you feeling, Trent?” Anthony asked, startling Oscar. He hoped he hadn’t been staring for too long.

Trent’s eyes fluttered open. “Okay. The sting is duller.”
Anthony stepped toward him, reaching out to help him up.

“Good. Let’s go sit you down in the common area. I can get some ibuprofen for the pain.”
Trent grabbed Anthony’s hand and heaved himself up. As they moved to the door, Trent looked over at Oscar with a strange look on his face. A question. Did he not want to leave Oscar?
“I’ll be right there,” Oscar said. A smile sprang up unbidden at Trent’s expression. “I just need to wash your blood off my hands.”
“That is a weird thing to hear,” Trent said, chuckling low. A spark of electricity ran up Oscar’s spine at the deep, rich sound.
What was wrong with him?

As Trent and Anthony left, Oscar went over to the porcelain farmhouse sink, tossing the scraps of gauze and medical tape in the trash as he passed it. He turned on the water and held out his hands.

There wasn’t too much to wash off. The wound had dried, other than a few drips when the t-shirt was removed. A quick rinse and he was clean.

Except for the single droplet of Trent’s blood that sat on the side of the knuckle of Oscar’s right pointer finger.
He didn’t know why he did it. It was an impulse, a sudden desire with no logic or reason. After staring at the burgundy bead for a long moment, he brought his hand to his face and licked it off.

His vision blew out in a bright rainbow of color. The taste of it exploded his senses, and a thrilling tingle ran from his tongue, down his throat, and spread to every inch of his body. He was overwhelmed with the sensation.
Never mind the sweet, perfect flavor of it. Honey and clove. It was all Oscar wanted to taste for the rest of his life. The intense, thrilling assault on his senses could only mean one thing.

No. He couldn’t be Trent’s mate. Would the universe do this to him? Would fate give him a mate who despised the very idea of it? A man who wanted nothing to do with vampires? Who wanted nothing to do with him? Who probably hated him?

The Tenor’s Shadow (The Vampire Impresario Book 1)

One temperamental opera singer. One vampire bodyguard. Let the sparks and secrets fly.

Anthony wouldn’t let anything stand in his way.

His career as an operatic tenor was finally taking off, and he would be damned if he let some stalker keep him from his globe-hopping musical dreams. But he had made the mistake of telling his uncle about the threatening letters the creep had been leaving in his hotel room.

Now he was saddled with a muscle-bound bodyguard who was seriously cramping his love life, even if the guy did have a swoony accent and the perfect number of freckles. No matter what Anthony did, he couldn’t get rid of the stubborn redheaded Brit. Freddie just didn’t fit in with his glamorous life of encores and galas and schmoozing. And how did the man never sleep?

Freddie was there to do a job.

Or maybe a few. He had been content as head of security for the Hughes vampire coven in London. But now he’d been sent to America to keep his coven master’s nephew safe from the threat of a rival coven. He knew the rules. Anthony couldn’t find out about the existence of vampires, and he certainly couldn’t find out that Freddie was one. Plus, he had to manage Anthony’s demanding personality, and Freddie was painfully bad with people. And he absolutely one-hundred-percent had to keep himself from hooking up with the overbearing American.

When friction erupts into steamy passion, can Freddie and Anthony forge a relationship together? Or will Freddie’s secrets and the deadly vampires of the Azarian coven tear them apart?

The Tenor's Shadow is a 50,000-word MM vampire romance with a guaranteed HEA and no cliffhanger. It contains a strong-but-silent vampire bodyguard and the high strung opera singer that falls fast for him. It also contains steamy scenes and the violence you might expect from a vampire story. Not suitable for readers under 18.

December 10, 2023
It’s been decades since the vampiric old gods turned on their worshippers. Driven by starvation, they came with the setting of the sun and turned a nameless, isolated village into a killing ground. Only two of the residents remain now: a hermit named Walter and his undead daughter, Alexis, who he sacrificed nearly twenty years ago.

Every night, Alexis shows up at Walter's window to try and lure him out. And every night, he indulges her in conversation but never steps past the safe threshold of his front door.

But when four hikers stumble upon the town one evening, everything changes. Will Alexis finally flush out the father that left her for dead? Will Walter find some absolution for his crime? Or will the morning sun rise over a desolate wilderness strewn with mutilated bodies?

Hear the Branches Rattle is a quick and brutal exploration of guilt, what we sacrifice, and who we sacrifice to.

Kerrie has always loved writing. In kindergarten, a romance story written in crayon was her first book. When she first published, she chose the pen name, Serena Zane. After writing several books under her pseudonym, Kerrie decided to make her mom happy and release her next book under the name she was given at birth. Kerrie moved around as a child but stayed within the Pacific Northwest.

What Inspired Kerrie to Write?

The tall trees and murky forests fed her imagination. Kerrie always loved vampires, werewolves, and all things paranormal. Her studies in criminal justice inspired her to start writing suspense romances. She found her footing though in the paranormal romance, and urban fantasy genre when she attended a writing workshop with one of her favorite authors. As a roomful of aspiring authors, she told us that if they were stalling in their genre, to look towards their bookshelves and write the most prevalent genre. Can you guess what was on Kerrie's bookshelf? That's right, nothing but paranormal, urban fantasy romance. She loves to read books with a strong plots, and unique characters. She wants to bring those qualities to her reader with a "side dish" of lust.
