Interview: MM Paranormal Romance Author J.P. Jackson + giveaway

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
J.P.: Oh my. They completely hijack the story. Half the time as I was writing, I was thinking to myself, YOU CAN’T PUT THAT IN THERE…and yet it happened anyway. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I’m nothing more than a transcriptionist.

Convince us why you feel your book is a must read.
J.P.: Admittedly, this book doesn’t really fit into the normal Romance structure where you get the main character's perspective, then the next chapter flips to the love interest, and their perceptions. This is very different in that I’m telling a paranormal/urban fantasy story that just happens to have some sexy fun times in it. And let me tell you, the world of all-male witches is filled with sexual tension, innuendo, and magic.

If you like things a little dark, with morally grey magic, a little twisty fun with a multiple plot lines and some hot muscle bears, this is definitely a read for you.

Have you written any other books that are not published?
J.P.: I have. One that may never see the light of day…it’s just that bad…and a secret project I’m working on right now. Shhhhh.

If your book had a candle, what scent would it be?
J.P.: Oh, yes. It would be the god candle. A combination of musk, moss from deep within a forgotten forest, cool spring water that’s running crisp and cold from a winter melt off, leather hides that have been left out in the sun to tan, and wet fur.

Hey – I didn’t say it would smell good. The Horned One has been running around that forest for a very long time.

What did you edit out of this book?
J.P.: Commas. The word “Just”, and some other really bad writing habits I have. But in terms of storyline, sex scenes or plot – nope, it’s all in there.

Is there a writer’s brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?
J.P.: Yes! Several. I would love to sit with Steven King, because, King of Horror. I know he has a writing style book – but I’d want to actually talk to him. Look him in the eyes as he answered all my writing questions. I love meeting and talking to people. How they respond, their body language, their eyes, and subtle shifts in behaviour speak more volumes than any email or text ever. I think Steven King’s brain is far darker and scarier a place than most of us could handle. I know my friends often shake their heads at me because of my own little dark Addams Family way of thinking. I think King would be even scarier.

There’s two other gay authors who I know, not well, but have had a few conversations with – Rick R Reed and Brandon Witt. Both have very different writing styles, but write in several different genres. I find Witt’s characters deeply vulnerable, and I’d love to know how he makes me feel that. What does he go through in his writing process to get the reader there. Reed writes Horror, Contemporary, and MM Romance. Rick is fantastic, and he’s already let me steel him away for drinks should we ever end up in the same place at the same time. Rick’s writing takes you deep into the thought process of the characters he creates. I get lost in his writing and it’s glorious. I’d love to take lessons from him. He has over 50 novels, and I’m slowly making my way through them.

Fun Facts/Behind the Scenes/Did You Know?'-type tidbits about the author, the book or the writing process of the book.
J.P.: Some authors need absolute silence when writing. I need a soundtrack. So not only do I have images in front of me when I’m writing, I also have a soundtrack too. I have a huge music library and my tastes go from Country to Industrial. I don’t know anyone who has George Straight and Rob Zombie in their playlists. But my writing soundtracks are all generally fairly haunting scores. I compile the videos I can find on YouTube and put them all on one playlist. If you’re ever interested, you can go here to listen to the music I play while writing:

Devid Khandelwal desperately wants to experience the supernatural. After years of studying everything from crystals to tarot to spellcasting, nothing has happened that would tell him the Shadow Realm is real. And that kills Dev. As a last-ditch resort, he purchases a summoning board, an occult tool that will grant him his ultimate desires.

Cameron Habersham is Dev’s best friend. Cam loves Dev like a brother and will do anything for him, as long as he looks good doing it. So when Dev asks him to perform the summoning board’s ritual, he reluctantly agrees, but he knows nothing will come of it. Nothing ever does.

However, within a day, Dev and Cam’s lives are turned upside down as wishes begin to come true. They discover the existence of a supernatural world beyond their imagination, but peace between the species is tenuous at best.

Dev finally gets to see the Shadow Realm, meets the man of his dreams, and is inducted into the local male coven. But for all the desires that were summoned into existence, Dev soon realizes the magical community dances the line between good and evil, and Cam ends up on the wrong side of everything.

The old adage is true: Be careful what you wish for.

Excerpt: Summoned by J.P. Jackson
Setup: The main character Dev, and his best friend Cam, have just returned from buying a summoning board. Tucked away in Dev’s room, they are about to use it for the first time.

“Honestly, I don’t get what you see in all this stuff.” Cam waved his hand through the air, a flippant gesture meant to dismiss Dev’s impressive occult collection.

Of course, Cam was referring to the contents of Dev’s room. The occult was Dev’s jam. Crystals, runes, tarot decks—you name it, Dev had it. The occult. He had read, studied, and practiced everything from card readings to spirit summoning. But despite his keen interest, admirable level of knowledge, and dedicated study, Dev hadn’t had a single otherworldly encounter or brush with psychic phenomenon.

That killed Dev.

“Shush. You be nice. Otherwise my demons will get you.” Dev chuckled, knowing full well Cam’s interest level focused more on his latest pair of shoes. Dev made a mental note to check for holes in the floorboards.

Dev, on the other hand, would have done anything to be a witch, sorcerer, or seer of the hidden. A pastime his Indian-born mother did not appreciate.

“Devid, why? This is all bad. You need to find a nice girl, get married, have children. I want to be a grandmother.” Dev pictured his mother’s face as her lips mouthed words. He would sit in a state of catatonia while she spouted off such sentiments. Like this morning, at breakfast.

Cam snapped Dev out of his mental wanderings. “Dev, the moment you actually manage to harness a demon and have it do your bidding, I’ll concede to wearing discount clothing.” Cam cocked an eyebrow at Dev, who met his gaze. They both smirked. In no world, anywhere, would Cam ever resort to wearing anything so common.

This was the nature of their relationship. Cam was eternally bitchy, and Dev was perpetually spooky. The dynamic was weird, but the friendship worked for them.

“Come on,” Dev said, pulling Cam’s attention to the task at hand. “Do this with me.”

“What? Bitch, no.”

“Why not? What the hell have you got to lose?”

“Just, you know, for some crazy-ass reason you manage to pull off some kind of beast wrangling, I don’t want to be dragged into the depths of the pit by some shrieking harpy demon. Especially in this outfit. I’m not ready to go to hell looking like this.”

“That’s not a thing, Cam.” Dev shook his head at Cam with a ‘god, you don’t know anything!’ kind of look.

“How the hell would you know?”

“I know. Now get down here.”

“Ugh, all right fine. It’s not like any of this has ever worked before.” Cam slid off the bed and sat opposite Dev on the floor, cross-legged. “What exactly is this thing?”

“A summoning board.”

“Yeah, you’ve said that. What is it, though? Like, what’s it supposed to do?” Cam asked, “And what are all those squiggly things?” Cam pointed toward the script patterning the outside of the board, his finger getting far too close to the board for Dev’s comfort.

“Shh. It’s nothing.” Dev slapped his hand away. “It’s only there to make the board look all gothic and shit.”

“Mmmhmm. K. So…what am I supposed to do? Run around the thing three times and chant ‘Bloody Mary’?” Cam asked.

“Oh my god, you’re such an idiot. It’s for summoning your greatest desires,” Dev instructed.

“Really? So, like, a big monster boyfriend?” Cam winked, cupped his own crotch, gave the bulge a couple of squeezes.

“I just…I can’t with you right now. Is that all you think about?”

“Nope. Bastard better be good-looking too. And rich. It takes money to keep me looking this good.” Cam ran his hands over his designer-clad torso and overpriced jeans.

“I swear to god, I don’t know why I bother with you.”

“Because you love me.”

“Sadly, yes. I do. Why? I have no idea.” Dev got up and rummaged around his room.

“Okay, so what the hell are you doing now?”

“We need things.”

“This is getting complicated.”

“Shush.”

Dev rushed around his room, gathering the trinkets they needed to do their first summons. And as fast as a desperate person would sell their soul to the devil, he returned, handing Cam a marker and three post-it notes.

“And…?”

“Write down three wishes.”

“Damn, are we summoning a genie?”

“It’s called a Djinn, and no, we are not…at least, I don’t think. Why do you make everything a challenge? Write something down.” Dev prodded Cam with the end of his marker.

“Good lord, all right. Fine.”

Cam got busy scratching stuff down.

Dev on the other hand had already planned exactly what he was going to wish for.

This was it.

The last straw.

The last time any of this hocus pocus would be attempted.

Dev had promised himself if this didn’t work, he would give all of it up, for good. Dev believed in magic. He would have staked his soul on a bargain with the devil.

So, this was it. And with all the heart-wrenching, utter loneliness and consuming desire for the Shadow Realm to be real, he wrote down his three wishes:

I want to have a supernatural power.

I want to see the Shadow Realm and be part of it.

I want my friends and family to respect me for my knowledge of the occult.

Dev folded the tiny notes in half and tossed them into the copper cauldron he had placed in the center of the board. The instructions on the back of the box were specific. All wishes were to be written on paper, personalized with blood, and placed into the inner ring. Finally, the paper had to be burnt in order to release the energy.

Cam gave Dev his pieces of paper.

“No! Not like that, geez.” Dev tossed them back at Cam.

Cam threw his hands up in the air. “What the hell?”

“Fold them in half like I did and put them in the copper bowl.”

“Fine.” Cam did as instructed. “There, happy?”

“Not quite. Give me your hand.”

“Why?”

“For the love of…” Dev grabbed Cam’s hand and deftly managed to stab a finger with a thumbtack.

“What the ever-loving fuck, dude?” Cam ripped his hand away and grabbed his finger. A small pinprick of blood welled up to the skin’s surface. He brought the finger up to his mouth.

“Don’t you dare!” Dev pointed at Cam.

Cam stopped and glared at Dev.

“Squeeze your finger so the blood drips onto your papers, but get it in the bowl, don’t get blood on my floor.” Dev pricked his own finger and held his digit over the bowl.

Three drops of blood fell into the copper cauldron. Followed thereafter by three of Cam’s.

Dev lit a match and pitched the flaming splinter into the bowl, pushing the post-it notes around so they caught fire.

“Go open the window,” Dev instructed Cam.

“Your mother will kill you if you burn the house down.”

“Okay, now come read this with me.” Dev gestured for Cam to sit beside him.

“I swear if anything happens…” Cam warned while he rearranged himself next to Dev, inspecting his finger and sucking at the miniscule wound.

“It will. I know it will.”

“You always say that.” Cam rolled his eyes and sighed with exasperation.

“Come on, read this.”

“Ugh, fine.”

And together, they read the incantation off of the instruction sheet that came with the board.

“With passion of heart, I seek to find, those Desires I want. Wishes to be mine.”

“That’s it?” Cam’s head tilted to one side in disbelief.

“That’s it.” Dev shrugged.

They waited for a few heartbeats. Loud ones that thudded against the inside of Dev’s chest.

“Okay, I’m bored now. And my finger hurts. You owe me a macchiato.” Cam grabbed his designer boots and slid them on. “You coming?”

Dev gazed into the cauldron as the last of the papers charred and blackened and tiny wisps of smoke curled up toward him and dissipated.

Nothing had happened.

“Come on,” Dev flinched as Cam threw an arm around his shoulder and squeezed him in a one armed bro hug. “I’ll buy.”

“Yeah, all right.”

As the two left the room, Dev eased the door closed using both hands on the doorknob while silently praying to any god or being who happened to be listening.

“Please hear me,” he whispered.

***

Inside the empty room, behind the closed door, the summoning board’s squiggly writing around the outside edges that was ‘only there to make the board look all gothic and shit’ shifted. As if the doodles and lines were dancing or marching.

The entire border rotated, widdershins, and the inner ring of the board spun in the opposite directions, changing the symbols.

The wind blew in through the open window and the curtain fluttered in the breeze.

About the Author
J.P. Jackson is an award-winning author of dark urban fantasy, paranormal, and even paranormal romance stories, but regardless of the genre, they always feature LGBTQ main characters.

J.P. works as an IT analyst in health care during the day, where if cornered he'd confess to casting spells to ensure clinicians actually use the electronic medical charting system he configures and implements.

At night, the writing happens, where demons, witches and shapeshifters congregate around the kitchen table and general chaos ensues. His husband of 22 years has very firmly put his foot down on any further wraith summonings and regularly lines the doorway with iron shavings and salt crystals. Imps are most definitely not house-trainable. Ghosts appear at the most inopportune times, and the Fae are known for regular visits where a glass of wine is exchanged for a good ole story or two. Although the husband doesn't know it, Canela and Jalisco, the two Chihuahuas, are in cahoots with the spell casting.

J.P.'s other hobbies include hybridizing African Violets (thanks to grandma), extensive traveling and believe it or not, knitting.

Book Review: Someone To Hold Me (The Gods Made Me Do It Book 6) by Lisa Oliver + giveaway

Someone To Hold Me (The Gods Made Me Do It Book 6)
by Lisa Oliver
August 11, 2019
395 pages
Hades, Lord of the Underworld, has spent years searching the world for his Fated Mate. He's watched his brother and nephews find their "light" and yet he can't find his. On the verge of giving up hope, Hades attends his brother Poseidon's wedding; so outside his comfort zone, but his discomfort proves worth it. Because there, at the reception, he finally sees his light.

It wasn't that Ali was uncomfortable around wolves - he'd been a good friend of Claude's for years. But when one of the wolves at Claude's and Poseidon's wedding gets verbally pushy, he feels he has no choice but to shift and find the alpha. What he doesn't expect is to find a beautiful man with soulful eyes, holding out his hand.

After all Ali and Hades have been through in their lives, you'd think the Fates would be kind to them. But between Cerberus's howling, Persephone's snarking, and Ali's family proving there is more to them than their blatant wealth, Ali and Hades have their hands full creating a life with each other. But maybe, just maybe, the Mother has a gift for them after all.

This is an MM paranormal true mates story intended for adults only. This book can be read as a stand-alone. Mpreg elements (Not the MCs, or the focus of the story)

Ali is a chipmunk shifter, and Hades is, well, Hades, lord of the underworld, ruler of all things dark and in charge of imprisoning and sentencing souls to their eternity in his realm.

In this story, Lisa Oliver presents Hades as the brother who drew the short straw and wound up with a job no one else wanted. He’s lonely, miserable, and excluded from almost everything to do with his family and has few if any, friends.

The story opens up in a club where his brother Sei is bewildered by the fact that Hades isn’t banging every piece of ass that looks his way.

But Hades is tired of sex and wants love. He’s looking for his fated mate.

Ali is a chipmunk shifter who has been turned out by his snobby family and left to his own in the big bad world. When a chunk of that big bad world on two legs decides he wants Ali to perform for him, Ali winds up in the arms of Hades, and it’s love at first sight. Or at least fated mates at first sight.

Story Concept: C
I hate to say it, but the Greek gods, the underworld, gods with mortals, gods banging mortals, lives depending on the fates, has been done, and very little has been done differently.

Shifters have been tossed into the mix, but they, along with the antagonist, feels like more of an add on rather than an ingredient.

Combine that with all-powerful beings who can snap their fingers so no one even has to crack open a bottle of lube, things get kind of silly.

World-Building: C
Worldbuilding isn’t easy and a lot of authors struggle with it. Considering the monumental concept Lisa Oliver chose to tackle, I’m surprised there was any sense of being grounded at all in the book.

Some places are fairly strong, such as the moral realm, a few spots in the underworld, but for the most part, the character interactions and experiences with their environment are rather flat.

There were so many missed opportunities to paint a fantastic visual as Ali took a tour through the underworld for the first time. The experience wasn’t rushed but there was no awe factor. Some scenes were obviously supposed to be disturbing or frightening, but the delivery left it feeling more like a Hollywood tour bus going through a carnival funhouse.

Characters: A-
As annoying as Ali could be (hyper chipmunk overdosed with optimism), he had a very distinct voice as did most of the characters in the book. They were definitely far more thought out than the actual world and held the story together even at its weakest points.

Secondary Characters: A-
While there were a few characters I really didn’t care for, again they had distinctive voices, personalities, and were very believable, despite some of the awkward encounters.

Folsom was by far the best secondary character—humorous and very rich, even in his limited screen time.

Plot Execution: A/D
Two scores on this, and I’ll explain. Lisa did a very good job bringing about each obstacle, whether disgruntled Persephone or Ali’s less than stellar family, all the way to Hade’s facing his insecurities.

But here lies the problem. The gods were too powerful. While there were obstacles, at any time, Hades could have snapped his fingers (literally) and made it all go away. For me, this was the weakest and most detrimental part of the story. By making the gods have all, and able to do all (or almost all) dulled any physical threats and muted all conflict. Especially since this power followed Hades from his realm to the mortal world.

Now the contrast to that power (which is another part that connects to the A in this rating) is the gods' helplessness when it comes to emotional and mental challenges.

Resolution: B-
Multiple conflicts were running in this story that did not connect except by the fact the same characters were involved. Hades and Ali found each other too easily for me, the challenges I expected (ones hinted to) were not all that challenging. The delivery of the conflicts felt like a laundry list to be checked off as they were dealt with.

Hades and Ali got their fairy tale ending, of course, so there were no real loose threads left behind.

Enthusiasm: A
Overall I felt as if this author enjoyed these characters and the story. There were parts I wondered whether or not they struggled due to how those sections felt more like extra words than important events.

I think the most love for the characters came through Ali and his gregarious personality.

Conclusion:
If you love sweet, squishy, and safe, you’ll probably enjoy this story very much. It’s a good read to have when you don’t want any surprises, a little humor, some silliness, and very little action.

I think there are a lot of people out there who will find great enjoyment through the story Lisa Oliver crafted.

Cupping his hand carefully, Claude reached around his neck. Sitting on his palm was the cutest little chipmunk Hades had ever seen. He had pale gold fur, mixed with almost white on his belly and paws, and his face had two black streaks that ran from his sharp little eyes to the edge of his pointed ears. And he was pissed off. Sitting upright on his back legs, the little fellow jabbed his wee front legs around as though he was boxing, chattering nineteen to the dozen. Hades doubted anyone could understand what was being said, but they could understand the tone and it was all directed at the hapless Bart.

“Well, would you look at that,” Sei grinned reaching out a finger as it he wanted to touch. “Ali has to be the cutest little shifter I’ve ever seen.”

“Put your finger away,” Hades muttered quietly, more to himself than anyone else. “You touch him, and I’ll strip the skin from your fingers.”

But obviously he wasn’t quiet enough. “Brother?” Sei looked shocked and then a huge smile spread across his face. “You see the light at last?” Claude and the other wolves who’d all stood around wanting to be nosy, looked between them as if not sure what was going on.

Hades only had eyes for his cute little mate, who had stopped chattering and was now twitching his nose madly in Hades direction. “I’m not the greatest catch,” he said quietly, catching the little creature’s eyes, “but I’ll spend eternity doing my best to make you happy if you’ll let me.” He slowly held out his hand and waited.

Time stood still. Hades wasn’t even sure if his heart was beating anymore. The little chipmunk dropped down on all fours, looking over his shoulder at Claude who smiled, then at Bart who growled, and then back at Hades. Twitching his tail madly, he took a flying leap, landing directly on Hades’ palm. Hades quickly moved his other hand to cradle him. He didn’t want his little mate to fall off and hurt himself. But Ali showed no signs of falling. Looking up at Hades he pointed one of his front paws at Bart and started his angry chittering again.

“I know, I know. I completely understand.” Hades said, nodding, keeping an eye on the angry shifter. “This guy has upset you and he deserves to pay. I totally agree.”

“Er, bro,” Sei cast a worried look in Claude’s direction. “The wolves get upset when us godly beings interfere in pack affairs.”

“Ali’s not pack.” Hades called on his power. A voice screamed in the back of his head that this was not the right place, that he could lose his mate if the wee guy couldn’t handle who he was, but Hades wasn’t about to shirk his duty to his precious mate on the very first day. “Do you know who I am?”

The world looked different from his new perspective. In his god form, Hades’ head almost touched the ceiling – the wolves below him not even half his size. His power cloaked the room – dark, dangerous – there was not a being in existence who didn’t immediately recognize how menacing he could be, even if they didn’t know who he was.

Only Ali appeared unaffected. The tiny chipmunk looked even smaller in his huge hand, but the guy didn’t seem worried, rubbing his cheek against Hades’ thumb which Hades found rather soothing.

“I’ll say again,” Hades’ voice bellowed around the room. “Do you know who I am and who’s mate you’ve had the audacity to upset?”

“Oh, my gods,” Bart fell to his knees, blathering. “I’ve done it now. My sexy shaft is going to be the death of me. That’s who you are, isn’t it? You’re Death and you’ve come to take me away and fuck, I’m still hard. I can’t die before I orgasm, that’s just not fair.”

“Actually,” Thanatos pushed through the crowds, his mate tucked in by his side, “I’m Death and I’m not taking you today, although your god reference was highly accurate.” He looked up at Hades and winked. “The man is a simpleton, Lord; I can see his soul. He is one of the classic examples of a man being led around by his dick, but I don’t believe he meant any permanent harm to your mate.”

Hades’ heart almost stopped when Ali leaned over his finger, chittering madly at Thanatos. Tilting his head to one side, Thanatos listened and then nodded. “You are quite right, little one, that anger of his is a grave concern. Any of the Doms here know they have to respect the laws of consent. I’m sure Claude has a suitable punishment for him, though, don’t you think? You really don’t want trash like this cluttering up the Underworld.”

Ali chittered a bit more and Thanatos laughed. Hades wished he had the power to understand all languages but only Death himself had been granted that power. “You’re probably right about that too, little one. But the Fates get upset when someone takes a life unnecessarily and this man isn’t bad, he’s just misguided. I’m sure he’s going to apologize, isn’t he?” He looked back at Bart who was watching, his mouth slack.

“Apologize,” Claude growled, stepping forward when Bart stayed silent, his fist raised. “You’ve upset two gods today and Death himself, not to mention my really good friend. Say you’re sorry, or I’ll castrate you and then we won’t have to worry about your dick leading you astray again.”

“Not my dick, not my dick.” Bart doubled over, clutching the body part in question. “I’m sorry. I’ll listen. I’ll take whatever punishment you give me, but don’t kill me, please don’t kill me.”

“It seems your presence has rendered him more useless than usual,” Sei sighed, digging Hades in the thigh with his elbow. “Why don’t you take your new mate somewhere special and get to know him. You have my word Bart won’t bother you or your mate again.”

Slowly moving his arm, Hades bought his hand up to his face. His sweet little chipmunk showed no fear – even reaching out for him with his cute front paws. “Are you ready to leave?” He asked keeping his voice as low as possible which wasn’t easy in this form. Ali’s excited bobbing of his head meant his fur brushed across Hades’ cheek sending tingles throughout his whole body. Closing his eyes, Hades enjoyed the sensation for just a moment, before translocating them to his favorite earthly home. No matter how accepting Ali was proving to be, he wasn’t about to subject his mate to the cold hardness of the Underworld until he absolutely had to.

Interview: UF author Aspen Black (Ghost Revelations Series) + giveaway

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
--How I became an author? That question always makes me laugh a little. I think anyone who picks up a pen (or types out on the computer) a story can be called an author. I was in fourth grade when I really developed a love of writing. I remember an essay where we had to write about what we wanted to do when we go to college. I wrote I was going to go to Harvard and become a writer! Of course, that didn’t happen. When I graduated high school, because my family needed me, I went straight to the work force and stopped writing for years. I went to community school in my mid-twenties, got a degree, a little bit of a better paying job, but it wasn’t until this past year that I picked up writing again.

I kept telling myself that I’d find time to write when I wasn’t so busy, or I had a better job. News flash to myself: It wasn’t going to happen unless I made it happen. So, I picked up that pen and got to writing. Ghost Revelations took about five months overall to finish. It was an idea I had for years that brewed in my head. Now, when I made it into a reverse harem novel? That idea came as I was writing it. I always got so mad at a heroine who was in love with different guys but ultimately had to choose one. How was that fair to her or the guys? It wasn’t!

I think I got off topic…I digress. I love writing, it’s my passion. Writing again, after so many years, has really helped me become happy again. It’s helped fight off my depression (which has been really bad), so much better than all the medications I’ve had to take for it.

What are some of your pet peeves?
--Pet peeves. I really only have a few. The biggest one is cracking knuckles. I CAN’T stand that noise. It literally makes me cringe. Another pet peeve is when someone says they’ll have something done at a certain time or date, and they wait until the very last moment to do it.

What do you do to unwind and relax?
--This might sound weird, but, I write or read. I can write for hours but only get a few things down and still be relaxed as if I had been reading that whole time. I don’t watch cable; I have Netflix on while I work.

Oh! It’s rare nowadays, but I also love to create little creatures with polymer clay or burn wood designs.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less!
--Awkward introvert, kooky, and awkward.

What is something unique/quirky about you?
---I know that I have a quirk about collecting all things Panda that I can. I also have this weird habit that when I have an ‘all day writing’ day, I have to have lemonade or I can’t start.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
--- Ok, it’s time to be honest here. My spirit animal has, and always will be, a panda. I am OBSESSED with collecting pandas. I have a half sleeve of panda tattoos on my left arm. They are fuzzy, soft, cuddle, chubby, extreme klutzes. Just like me!

Would serenading be enough to convince a mate they were meant to be?

Cole Burns doesn’t suffer the cold or feeling the holiday spirit, but dreams of having a family by thirty, preferably with two or three children, are slowly fading into the fog of winter. It's a sad, sad situation he cannot seem to escape.

For John Michael Diamond, being CEO of Diamond Corporation equates to never finding the perfect mate to share his nest. In fact, it’s next to impossible. Through a twist of fate, he discovers his mate not only lives nearby but also on his family’s estate.

Cole never thought he’d fall for such a crazy, insanely gorgeous rich guy, and yet here he was, wrapped in shifter eagle who serenades him with love songs. This was going to be an interesting Christmas.

Excerpt:
Shivers slid down John Michael Diamond’s spine when Pavarotti reached a high B. As CEO of Diamond Corporation, Michael could have anything in the world, yet it was the dead tenor’s voice that he’d always dreamed he could match. Hitting that top note would be an accomplishment.

When the last notes to the aria died, he paused the app on his phone and worked his jaw. After adjusting his earphones, he angled his lower jaw side to side, up and down, stuck out his tongue, and let out a deep huff. He repeated the exercise several times more before rotating his tongue inside his mouth, sticking it out several times. When the muscle felt nice and relaxed, he began the series of lip and tongue-trill exercises his vocal coach had taught him. The drills were simple but effective, and once he was done, he tapped the rewind icon on his phone. He sang along with Pavarotti as he read through the documents on his lap. The smooth ride at the back of the limousine made the last-minute task of signing each page easier.

He was on his way home for Christmas. Not his penthouse in the city, but the family estate in Washington State. His mother and sisters were waiting for him. He couldn’t wait to see them again, well, except for his mother. He loved the fiery woman to death, but she was angry at him for leaving the day after Thanksgiving. Spending a few weeks with them should make up for his faults.

The part of the aria he loved best was coming up, making him look up from the documents. He could do this. He would reach that note even if it killed him. Michael closed his eyes and listened for the cue, tilting his head to the side. Almost there. Taking a deep breath, he opened his mouth, only to jerk in surprise when a ringtone blasted through his earpieces.

“Fucking hell.” He cursed under his breath as he scrambled to pull the gadget from his ears and accept the call at the same time. His fumbling fingers managed to fail him several times before he finally got to connect with the incoming call.

“What?” Michael snapped into the piece.

“Sir, I apologize, but this is important.” His temporary assistant’s hesitant voice trembled through the phone.

“I’m on vacation, Giles.”

“I know, sir, but we’ve been hacked.”

“What do you mean hacked?”

“Our PR social media account’s been hacked, sir. Someone got hold of our password and has used it to post a joke.”

“Who gave it out?”

“We’re not sure, sir. I called you as soon as I got the word.”

“What’s IT doing about it?”

“We haven’t called them, sir.”

Michael closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. A throbbing began between his eyes. “Shouldn’t the guy in charge of the account be contacted first? What’s wrong with your statement, Giles? Why are you even calling me about this?”

“Well, sir, it’s true that Burns is the one of those in charge of our social networks, but he’s not the main guy or the IT guy. That’s Samuelson. And you told me to call you in case of an emergency.”

“And you think this is an emergency?”

“Well…yes, sir. Our account’s been hacked.”

“Let’s say you’re right. Now, what does Samuelson have to say about it?”

“Well, sir, as I’ve mentioned before, we haven’t talked to him. He’s been hospitalized. For appendicitis.”

“So. Samuelson’s out. Who can you call about this?”

“Burns, sir.”

“Giles, Giles, Giles,” Michael said. “For the love of God.”

“I’m sorry, sir. But according to my records, Burns is the only one with an IT background. The rest are plain PR guys.”

“Save your apologies. Contact the PR department, have them contact Burns.”

“I already did that, and they told me they couldn’t get a hold of him. Most likely he’s taking a walk.”

“Taking a walk?” Michael couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“Yes, sir. That’s what they said.”

Who am I talking to? Cher from Clueless? Michael struggled to control his impatience. “Giles?”

“Yes, sir?”

“Why are you telling me all this again?”

“Uhm…as I said before, sir. Because you told me to tell you everything that went on while you’re on vacation. Sir.”

Michael desperately wanted his regular assistant. Why did Magda have to go on a cruise? Why did he say yes when she recommended Giles?

“Should the details to the hows and whys of locating and talking to a PR man, who might just be able to do something about this situation, be a part of your reports to me?”

Thirty seconds later, Michael let out a dramatic sigh at Giles’ lack of response.

“Giles.” He really should stop snapping. Magda would kill him when she found out.

“Yes, sir?”

It was a good thing Michael had exemplary hearing.

“Report to me when there’s an actual need. Detailing the process of contacting Burns is not a need. Do you understand me? People are employed to take care of these kinds of situations. I didn’t employ you to bother me with mundane details when we’ve hired people to take care of them.”

“Yes, sir.”

Another thirty seconds of silence passed.

God give me patience! “Is there anything else, Giles?”

“Uh…yes, sir.”

Michael fought back a loud curse. “What is it?” He tried to sound patient.

“Well. Sir.” Giles cleared his throat. “Burns. Sir.”

“Yes?”

“I thought that you may be able to contact him sooner than the rest of us here, sir. My records show that his residence is at the reservation, a few miles from the estate,” Giles said in a rush.

“He is? Why is that?”

“Burns works full-time as a caretaker at the Diamond reservation. Specifically, area twenty-eight. If I read the tracker right, you’re just twelve miles away, sir.”

“Giles?”

“Yes, sir?”

“Good job.”

“Thank you, sir!”

About the Author:
I grew up listening to folk tales my father and nannies told either to entertain us children or to send home a message. These narratives I kept with me and finally, I wrote them down in a journal way back when I kept one. Going through junk led to a long forgotten box and in it was the journal. Reading the stories of romance, science fiction and horror I had taken time to put to paper, brought to light that these were tales I never met in my readings.

The tales I write are fictional but all of them are based on what I grew up with and still dream about. That they have an M/M twist is simply for my pleasure. And I hope, yours as well.
