Book Review: The Island Mother by Jon Cohn

The Island Mother
by Jon Cohn
Date: July 13, 2022
Publisher: Deadbolt Books
ASIN: B0B6HH2LHB
ISBN: 9798218023478
Genre: Young adult, thriller, horror, dark fantasy
Midsommar meets White Lotus in this supernatural thriller centered around an emotionally codependent woman on the run from her own life. She finds paradise, but it may come at a cost that she's unable to pay...

Leigh Ramos - a woman on the run from her ex-boyfriend and the dangerous life she left behind - is starting over in Hawaii with a new name and hopes to leave her past behind her.
She’s doing okay. A new job. Great friends. And a love interest in her new boss. But something seems off. The itch to run is back and the island seems to be rejecting her at every turn.

There’s a darkness looming on the island and it seems that the only thing that will save them is a sacrifice that will cost a little bit of something from everyone.

Will this new life be all that she’s ever wished for or is the island going to claim her too?

From author Jon Cohn, comes the next great horror book that blends danger, supernatural creatures, and the unknown into an unforgettable read.

Island Mother is the story of Leigh Ramos lives with Jesse, a trailer park meth king in a small area of Kentucky. He sends her to deliver meth to some clients with an empty gun for “protection.” Things go bad and she manages to escape, taking the meth, a small bag of money, and the van. Luckily, the bag held five thousand, so she pays for the farthest she can go by plane without going to a foreign country and ends up in Hawaii.

A page-turning horror novel where the heroine thought all she had to worry about was a drug-dealing boyfriend, but she finds that paradise wears a mask where nothing is what it seems, but hides terrifying gods and monsters that are frighteningly real, especially when they demand sacrifices to keep paradise beautiful and tourist-friendly.

I gave Island Mother 5 sheep.

New Release: The Immortal Tailor by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff + giveaway

The Immortal Tailor
by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff
August 30th 2022
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance
From New York Times bestselling author Mimi Jean Pamfiloff comes a new immortal series filled with dark humor, angst, and a brooding hero who loves a good tweed: The Immortal Tailor.

THE IMMORTAL WORLD IS IN TROUBLE, AND THE GODS DEMAND . . . THEIR TAILOR COME TO THE RESCUE?

Long ago, Damien Greystone hung up his guns, knives, and rope for the quiet life of a tailor. Sure, his clients now include the likes of bloodthirsty vampires, a hair-obsessed Bigfoot, and fourteen insane deities, but at least Damien doesn’t have to kill anymore. And, sure, he’s been cursed to live alone for all eternity, but nobody’s life is perfect. Right?

Unfortunately, his monk-like existence is about to come to a screeching halt. The gods’ powers are on the fritz, and they’re demanding his help.

But when Damien starts investigating, he meets Sky Morales, a beautiful journalist who’s up to her ears in danger (and one very aggressive fairy). He has no choice but to dust off his weapons.

Can he protect her without getting too close? Because his “curse of solitude” doesn’t negotiate, and bad things will happen to Sky if he so much as feels a flutter of affection.

And as if that pressure weren’t enough, his precious store is being looked after by a love-sucking demon and a punk chick who has a knack for insulting everyone. Bigfoot isn’t pleased.

The sooner Damien can get this job done, the faster he can get back to his peaceful life. If only he weren’t enjoying getting his hands dirty again. Just like the good old days that got him in trouble.

Alpha Male Diner: Serving Prince of Atlantis prepared by Kristina Streva + giveaway

Prince of Atlantis
Recipe created by Kristina Streva
The Inked (The Inked Series Book One)

Ingredients:
· Six-foot tall, muscular merman
· Cheeky smile, dimples, and strong arms
· Sculpted body, soft heart
· Equal portions of playful and protective

Seasoning:
· A sense of exploration & adventure
· A strong grip for holding weapons and kissing
· Determined to win the throne
· Jealous twin brother

After tossing the ingredients well, carefully fold in the following:
· Sarcasm
· Cocky confidence
· Soft kissable lips
· Sharp jawline

Turn on the heat and let it simmer. This meal is best when cooked slowly to allow a nice juicy build-up.

Prior to serving this mouthwatering dish, add a dash of conflict and a heaping spoonful of hero mentality.

This recipe is sometimes confused with a very similar recipe that looks the same but tastes quite sour. Be careful which one you follow.

TASTE TEST
“He grabbed the back of her head, his fingers intertwining with her long, silky, gray strands as he pushed his lips up against hers.

She did not struggle—but neither did she really return the kiss. His soft lips kissed Yuri with such force that it left her temporarily stunned. As she shut her wide eyes, his hands traveled to her waist. He gripped his fingers around her hips, pushing her against the boulder as he continued to kiss her with a starved sense of passion that needed to be quenched.”

Releasing 9-6-22: Final Heir (Jane Yellowrock Book 15) by Faith Hunter + excerpt

Final Heir (Jane Yellowrock Book 15)
by Faith Hunter
September 6, 2022
Book 15 of 15: Jane Yellowrock
The stakes couldn’t be higher in the newest novel in the New York Times bestselling, pulse-pounding Jane Yellowrock series.

Jane Yellowrock is the queen of the vampires, and that makes her a target as she fights to maintain control and keep peace in the city of New Orleans. She has enemies at every turn, because vampires live forever, and they keep their grudges alive with them. That includes the Heir, the vampire sire of the Pellissier bloodline, which gave rise to Leo Pellissier himself—Jane’s old boss and the former master of the city.

With the Heir and all the forces of darkness he can muster arrayed against her, Jane will need all the help she can get. She’ll find it in her city, her friends, her found family, and, of course, the Beast inside of her.

FINAL HEIR Excerpt
I accepted and drained a bottle of water. “From the beginning Hayyel was close by. He had the freedom to act and intervene in some events, but maybe he didn’t have autonomy?” I stopped speaking aloud, following the layered implications in the vision.

I had postulated that Hayyel had already been par- tially chained, here on Earth, and was, currently, already part of the events taking place. Maybe he had been wait- ing for Evil Evie’s demon circle to manifest . . . and for all of us to be present so he could do . . . whatever he did to us all as he dealt with the demon Evangelina called.

I had sometimes wondered if he had planned it all, planned to change us. Maybe use us. Molly, my BFF, and her family: Evan, her partially-in-the-closet air witch hus- band, her children, my godchildren: Angie and EJ. Rick (my former boyfriend and now a wereleopard), Kemnebi (another wereleopard), Brute (werewolf stuck in human form). Even my Beast, the other soul who lived inside me. We were all changed in fundamental ways by the banishing of the demon and the proximity to the angel.

A chained angel? Partially chained?

So maybe Hayyel had been, and was, still close by. Maybe he could help, even if he was chained. Or maybe he needed help to deal with being chained. Or both.

I was glad I hadn’t said all that aloud, because there was power in this vision and some kernels of truth. I opened my eyes, not sure when they had closed.

Excerpt: Autumn Chaos (Season’s War, #1) by Olena Nikitin + giveaway

Autumn Chaos (Season’s War, #1)
by Olena Nikitin
September 1st, 2022
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance
A mystery of a monster on the rampage ignites the passionate love triangle between a witch and two warriors with a help of a mysterious cat.

After ten years of peaceful solitude, exiled-mage-turned-village-witch, Lady Inanuan of Thorn, has her life turned upside down when a half-dead warrior is dumped on her doorstep. Soon she learns that no good deed goes unpunished in the Black Forest—not even if your friend is Leshy, the Forest God himself.

Expelled from her position as a court mage for her sharp tongue, Ina’s had ten years to learn how to survive in a harsh environment. The forbidden healing she performs links her life energy with her unexpected guest Marcach, captain of the guards, and Ren, his best friend, a traveller from lands so far away that many consider them a myth.

With unnatural monsters on the loose and unrest in the capital, everything points toward rebellion, and clues that both men discover indicate Ina’s involvement. Ina learns her magic is not what it seems, and her past comes back to haunt her.
An old mistake will see her dragged back to the court and thrown right into the middle of the political struggle. To make things worse, her heart succumbs not to just one man but two, and each expects the worst of her.

Will the woman who does not believe in love be able to choose? And can she clear her name and learn to control the Chaos before it burns the kingdom down?

EXCERPT
Warm sunlight caressed Ina’s face, and she stretched like a cat without opening her eyes. She didn’t want to wake up just yet, not when it was nice and warm and… fluffy?

Did Boruta jump on the bed when she was asleep? Her hand wandered to the source of the fluffiness against her cheek and started stroking it. It was different, coarser than cat fur, and much more enticing. Ina kept stroking it, trying to get closer to the source of the warmth, with her half-asleep brain musing over the riddle of majestic fur. Suddenly, the pleasant warmth was ripped away, and a deep, grumpy voice boomed straight to her face.

“Who the fuck are you? What am I doing here, and what the hell are you doing to my chest?”

She opened one eye, trying to adjust to the daylight. A sharp masculine face with a clenched jaw was right above her, looking quite hostile. The realisation dawned with painful memories of yesterday’s healing. “Ah, my pain in the ass unwelcome guest is still here.” Still, she had to admit she appreciated the masculine presence next to her, despite the circumstances of their first meeting. Unfortunately, the object of her appreciation was pissed, confused and demanding an explanation. It looked like the morning brew would have to wait.

You’d think the afterlife would be warmer, Mar thought as a shiver ran over his body. Awareness crept in, and the lack of pain was the next thing he noticed after the cold. How am I still alive? Was the next thought that followed when a soft murmur, almost a purr, tickled his ear as a soft stroking hand moved across the expanse of his naked chest.

Mar slowly opened his eyes, and a homely, if a slightly shabby room, came into focus, not to mention the nearly naked woman still happily stroking her hand over his chest.

Mar mumbled a curse when he leapt from the small bed, sheets the colour of old blood hampering his movements as unsettling thoughts ran rampant through his mind. He shouted his confusion in the woman’s face with uncharacteristic harshness, snapping the questions out in anger.

Ina slowly raised her torso from the tussled linen. She yawned wide, indifferent and unfazed by the sudden outburst of her guest. Why couldn’t you just lay down and take it a little longer? She thought, still feeling drained after last night, especially after this ungrateful bore woke her from such a pleasant dream.

With nothing better to do, while waiting till he calmed down, Ina assessed his body. There was something incredibly appealing about the way he looked. Lean but well-built, his chest and arms muscles rippling with barely restrained violence, a short, slightly ragged beard paired with slightly too long, ashen blonde hair. Her gaze slid over his chest. She noticed new and old scars beneath the soft fur covering his torso. Her gaze slid lower with a lazy smile, shamelessly trailing along the hairline adorning his abdomen, stopping at the top of his breeches and her lips parted. Time to negotiate the release from my exile, she thought, shifting on the bed.

“I’m Ina, and you are coming back to bed.” She stated the fact with an alluring purr, patting the tangled linen. “You still need to recover, and I’m too depleted to drag you back from the afterlife twice.”

Unfortunately, after years of being surrounded by peasants with their trembling fearful voices not only made her feel lonely but must have stripped her of her charm.

The man stared at her in disbelief, and she shifted under his judgemental stare. And it occurred to her, being with a stranger in the cottage, not only did she not show any signs of fear or embarrassment, but she also openly invited him to her bed. His widened pupils told her it was not without its appeal. Still, judging by the state peasants dragged him here most likely, the last thing he remembered was a battle, agonising pain, sharp claws ripping his body, and his desperate attempt to cling to life. He had the reason to be angry and confused, and Ina was almost sorry for him, but her compassion cut off when he spoke.

“I am Marcach of Liath, the Captain of King’s Guards, and I demand answers. I have no time to spend with the local whore.”

Her mouth gaped at the sheer audacity of this statement, and tension of raw magic filled the air. One look at her face and his tightened lips made it clear he knew he’d made a terrible mistake. The wisps of Chaos danced in the air when Ina raised herself on the bed.

“Oh, go fuck yourself, you ungrateful bore!”

A sudden burst of power that came from her hit the man in the chest like a horse’s kick. The next thing, he was flung backwards, breaking through the door. And that was only the first lesson he learned about Lady of Thorn that day.

About the Author:
Website-Goodreads
Euphoric Wonderland is Ryan Becker’s seminal literary work which was largely inspired by the relationship he has with his parents, both of whom are poets in their own rights and words. His father is a self-taught classical pianist, as well as an avid Shakespeare fan and aficionado. Those two elements of the fine arts were instilled in Ryan at an early age and were quickly absorbed through his father’s reading to him about famous musicians and writers.

As an avid collector of vinyl records, upon hearing the music of The Beatles for the first time, specifically their Abbey Road album, Ryan knew his destiny was to write. “Every step of this life’s journey is a learning experience,” proclaims Mr. Becker. He further adds, “The Beatles taught me how not to have hate in my heart, why we must help people in need, and to never hesitate to openly express my feelings in any situation.”

Ryan credits his even-tempered, soft-spoken mother for his development as a human being. He tries to emulate her cool-under-pressure manner as well as her kind and empathetic heart, which she shares with anyone in need. It is those characteristics he’s inherited that allow him to express himself through his writing.

Ryan’s childhood carried with it some undeniably emotional bumps and bruises, explaining “Everyone has struggles, and many have their inner demons. The only way for me to exorcize them is by taking them out of my brain and putting them down on paper.”

Writing can be a wonderful escape from reality as well as a fantastic way of feeling comfort within one’s true reality.

Watching reruns of Smallville on repeat, Ryan asserts that the character of Clark Kent, portrayed by Tom Welling, has taught him a few things about growing up. For example, it helped him learn how to speak and interact better with others—trust in people who treat him right and never disregard someone who has his best interests at heart.

It is why he proclaims, “Don’t ever let anyone take a torch to your dreams. Use that fire to motivate you to achieve your greatness, no matter in which arena you might be endeavoring!”

“What are you doing?” a smooth, deep voice asked from behind her.

Sia spun around, fear and guilt seizing her lungs, though she couldn’t fathom what she had to feel guilty about. She clutched her phone to her chest, her gaze darting about. Because that surely was a great look on her. “Nothing,” she said after a moment. “What are you doing?”

Donovan’s dark lashes lowered over irises shimmering softly in the streetlamp’s light as he studied her. He tilted his head to one side, causing a lock of dark hair to fall over his brow. “Is everything okay, Doc?”

Forcing a smile at that point in her life was like peeling taffy that had melted and then cooled again off her car dashboard, but she finally managed to do it. “Of course. Why wouldn’t it be?” She tried to cross her arms over her chest and lean against a stack of crates. She failed and almost landed face-first on the pavement.

He rushed forward, but she caught herself and smoothed a hand over her hair. “How’s Elwyn?” she asked, deflecting. Her cheeks burned, and she thanked the powers for low light. Blushing was another human trait she despised.

After a long moment, Donovan lifted a shoulder. “You’d know better than me, you being her medic and all.”

Medic. Wasn’t that a military term? Had he served? Donovan had been the first member of the group she’d met when she walked up to the main house of the Loehr’s compound, the one constructed to keep Charley’s daughter safe. Knowing that Charley wasn’t around to contest her proclamation, Sia had pretended to be a friend of Charley’s from school. She’d told them that Charley had asked her to keep an eye on Elwyn and offered her services. A man named Garrett Swopes, another of Elwyn’s guardians, had hired her on the spot as Donovan watched their interaction.

Coincidentally, Donovan was also the first of the ragtag team she’d treated when he laid down his bike to avoid getting beheaded by a truck that had pulled out in front of him. And yet, even after all these years, she still knew so little about him.

Her phone pinged, and she read the text from Benji. Run, Sia. And believe nothing.

I was very intrigued by the Title and the cover of this book. I always like to try authors I haven’t read yet so this seemed right up my alley.

I sensed a mishmash of more than a few other books(storylines) I have read over the previous years. This book has about everything included, from a snarky heroine to a little porn. I did stick it out till the end but did speed read through some of the parts.

I struggled with the main character Kali and her resulting love interest Asmo. I tend to sneer at characters that at one minute will be confident, powerful, and snarky then insecure, pouting and wish-washy. Perhaps I misunderstood and it was all a part of an S&M theme but I didn’t read it that way.

I thought the writing was good but the storyline was a little disjointed and predictable. This is a new author for me and I am sure there is an audience and a future here with a little more organization and flow to the stories. Perhaps I should give the 2nd book a try but at this point, I feel this story series is just not for me.

Getting 3 “overloaded” sheep.

Excerpt
My life has been full of lies and betrayal.

I just found out that Magic, Demons, Gods... It's all real.

Now, an Evil King wants to harness my powers for his own. And if he does, he'll bring ruin to all six realms.

The best part of it... I'm destined to save us all.

But how can I fight an evil that I've never even seen? Because no matter what I do, he always seems to be one step ahead of me.

To add to the shock of a lifetime, Prince of the Underworld, Asmodeus has been sent to train and protect me.

So far, the only thing he's good at is driving me insane.

I'm not sure if I want to throat punch him or kiss him.

Maybe both....

But he's my only chance at learning how to control my newly awakened power, save my family, and stop Lucius's plans before it's too late.

I just hope the prophecy is right. And being the "Destined one" is enough.

Because if it's wrong... I've doomed us all.

Christine M. Germain is an Award-Winning American author of Horror Thriller & Paranormal Romance fiction. Born March 8, 1981, in Brooklyn, New York, she found her passion for writing in 1993 and wrote her first horror story at twelve. Watching horror movies and reading young adult horror fiction novels influenced her love for writing a story with a protagonist that looked like her. African American women weren’t portrayed as solid leads in horror films or books. Instead of waiting to see if that would happen, she created a story that she would love to read and watch on the big screen that catered to more diverse characters.

Admiring authors such as Stephen King and R.L. Stein, Christine pursued her writing journey majoring in literature, and graduated with a performing arts degree. Known for an imagination unlike any other, Christine is ready to take you to a thrilling shapeshifter world with Five book series, “The Brother’s Curse Saga.”
