Comic Review: Judas Complex (2022) from Dauntless Stories

Campy 90s horror comic about vampires and werewolves and mad scientists and football

Judas Complex
Creator: Son M. (Animalheads on Tapas, Harper Collins “Thief of the Heights”)
Artwork: Dri Gomez
Letters: Toben Racicot
Release: late August 2022
Genre: queer horror fantasy mystery
Pages: 77 vel.
It was a massacre.
In the 19902, a college football team, the Red Wolves, suddenly went mad during a packed game, slaughtering the competition and innocent bystanders alike. No one knows what truly happened that night.

No one except the long survivor: Desmond.

A handful of years later, Desmond finds himself working as a temp for a private investigator. The man, Constantine, seems a little strange--covering up in the summer heat, always drinking out of a canister, never makes eye contact--but nice overall.

He's settled in, moving on from his traumatic past and never looking back. Only, people have started going missing. And bodies, torn apart, are floating to the surface. The same pattern to what happened all those years ago. Except now, with Constantine at his side, he has a chance to stop it.

This is a mature audience's title.

Me, when I first heard about and saw the artwork for Judas Complex on Son M.'s Twitter in Oct 2021. I pre-ordered it then and just got my digital copy. The print copy is coming soon.

[Sexy] Vampires
[Sexy] Werewolves
Mad scientist
Graphic novel
Look at all my boxes it checks! I'm not a fan of football...but I am a fan of men in football pants...just saying. And even if the two main protags weren't sexy (which they are), I still would have been all over this story. I don't know if they will be a romance between Constantine and Desmond, there is a fondness between them, but it isn't touched on in this issue, but a girl can hope...
Was it worth the wait? Oh, yeah. I've read Son M.'s webcomic on Tapas, Animalheads. And she is an excellent storyteller. So I had no doubt this would be too.

The artwork is amazing. The colors, panel composition, and layouts set the mood. And all those werewolves' action scenes...RAWR! The backstory is woven into the current plotline flawlessly. There were no info dumps or long narration. Just a few panels strategically dropped here and there. They never use the word vampire, but we know Constantine is one. It might seem like a small thing, but I'm a big fan of show not tell. I love that they gave a 77-page first issue. It kick-starts the story and gets the reader invested. Well worth the money. I'm all in with the Judas Complex.

Check out this awesome artwork!

Book Review: Saint’s Passage: (Elemental Covenant Book 1) by Elizabeth Hunter

Saint’s Passage: (Elemental Covenant Book 1)
by Elizabeth Hunter
March 23, 2021
Pages: 278
Carwyn ap Bryn and Brigid Connor are two elemental vampires finding the lost, righting wrongs, and searching for meaning in the endless stretch of immortality they’ve been granted.

And trying not to blow things up, but that might be more aspirational.

Everyone said that Lupe Martínez was a good kid. She listened to her mom, she helped at the homeless shelter, she got good grades, and she had a bright future ahead of her.

Until she disappeared.

Now no one knows what to think. The police are sure she ran away; her mother is sure she didn’t. Days have passed and no one knows what to do until her family priest suggests they call in an old friend.

A very old friend.

Saint’s Passage is the first book in the paranormal mystery series Elemental Covenant by Elizabeth Hunter, USA Today best-selling author of the Elemental Legacy series, the Glimmer Lake Series, and the Irin Chronicles.

Carwyn, an earth vampire, and Brigid, a fire vampire, are a mated couple who work at righting wrongs amongst other things in their life of immortality. Carwyn is a huge loveable guy who was a priest in a former life, and Brigid is a temperamental woman who can stand on her own two feet and accomplish whatever she sets her mind to.

When Lupe goes missing, Carwyn and Brigid are hired to locate her. Everyone they talk to says that Lupe is a good kid with a heart of gold who wouldn’t run away, but each time they find a lead on her whereabouts, it seems they just missed her. Hoping that she didn’t meet with a terrible fate, the couple continues to exhaust every lead, including hunting down the man she supposedly disappeared with.

Hunter’s books are so easy to read, with good storylines, romance, and the supernatural to keep you returning time and time again. If you are looking for another series to read of hers, this is the one.

Excerpt: Jester by Brielle D. Porter + giveaway

by Brielle D. Porter
Publication date: August 9th 2022
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult
What happens in Oasis, stays in Oasis.

Lisette’s father killed the King. His execution leaves Lisette alone, disgraced, and without the magic he intended to pass on to her. In Oasis, that’s a problem. Glutted with enchanted performers, Oasis is a sin city where courtiers pay in gold to drink, gamble, and above all, be entertained. To survive on its competitive streets, Lisette peddles paltry illusions in place of magic.

Desperate to prove herself, Lisette enters into a deadly competition to be chosen as the highest-ranked magician in the world, the Queen’s Jester. But her rival, the irritatingly handsome Luc, possesses the one thing Lisette does not—real magic. Lisette will do anything to win, but when evidence implicating the Queen in her husband’s murder surfaces, Lisette must choose between redeeming her family name, or seizing the fame she’s hungered for her entire life.

A group of tourists has gathered to watch me throw knives at a shopboy. They’ve come here for magic; I’ve kept them here with misdirection and lies. Maybe it’s not magic exactly, but it is undeniably entertaining watching my unwilling assistant flinch every time the knife point gets too close to his groin.

I hold the knife steady, aiming, watching his limp hair flop as the wooden wheel he’s strapped to slowly rotates.

Stefan lets out a whimper, and I toss him a smile. He was a lot braver in the shop where I’d found him, flirting as he bagged my books. It hadn’t been hard to trick him into volunteering.

The crowd jeers.

“Aim lower!”

“Aim higher! Maim his ugly face!”

“Throw three at once!”

“Mirage, don’t you dare!” Stefan shouts.

The nighttime crowd is always hungrier for violence. I hold up my hands placatingly.

“Obviously, I can’t throw three knives at once. That would be dangerous and highly irresponsible…”

There are a couple of groans, but my reputation must precede me, because there are a few whoops and chuckles thrown in as well. With a sweep, I pull my deadliest knife from my belt, the one with the wicked serrated edge, brandishing it for the crowd.

“But I think we can spice things up a bit!”

I stab the knife into a vat of oil, the shimmering liquid sliding down the tang of the blade. Then, with a flourish, I sweep it through a nearby torch. Flame devours the knife. The crowd roars its approval. Stefan pales.

The hilt burns in my hand, throwing off sparks, as I wonder if perhaps I’ve gone too far. I’ve only tried this a few times. And the jackrabbit I had caught to practice with wasn’t even good to eat after, blackened to an inedible crisp.

Either way, I’ll give them a show.

Cover Reveal: The Heart of Neverland (The Neverwitch Chronicles #1) by Natalie J. Reddy

The Heart of Neverland (The Neverwitch Chronicles #1)
by Natalie J. Reddy
November 30th, 2022
Genre: Fantasy/ Romance/ Adventure/ Pirates/ Pan Retelling
One night.

That’s all it takes to turn my life upside down. It’s not like I had the most stable childhood to begin. Most of it was spent on the run from the villains in my mom’s head. It isn’t until after she’s murdered right in front of me that I realize maybe they weren’t in her head after all.

After her death I go to stay with an uncle I didn’t know existed to try to make sense of my life and find some answers about who I really am. As I search for the truth a guy named Peter shows up and makes it his mission to constantly get in my personal space. He’s gorgeous, flirty and completely infuriating. And possibly not actually human or from this world.

The things he tells me sound insane and I don’t think I can trust him. It doesn’t matter that each heated touch draws me deeper into his web. Things like magic, pirates and Peter Pan just aren’t real.

Movie Review: Prey (2022) on Hulu

Aug 5, 2022
Director: Dan Trachtenberg
Writer: Patrick Aison
Cast: Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope, Stormee Kipp
Rating: R (Strong Bloody Violence)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Runtime: 1h 39m
Franchise: Predator
Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, "Prey" is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries.

I'm a Predator fan since the beginning. Did I think they needed another film? No. But am I glad they did? OH YEAH!

We don't get Hulu but our youngest daughter has an account and let us watch!
Prey is the same as all the other Predator movies but it is new too. Set 300 years before the original Predator movie, the alien lands on Comanche land. How can this young woman fight a Predator? This Predator isn't as advanced as the ones in the previous movies. He doesn't have the armor.

I LOVED the character Naru. The actress, Amber Midthunder, was fabulous and fierce. Prey is as much a coming-of-age movie as it is an action-packed, violent, Sci-fi film. The story moves at a slower pace...which is perfect for this story. But the underlying sense of suspense and doom from start to finish.

If you love the Predator franchise, then you'll most likely enjoy this one too :)

My husband gave it 3 1/2 sheep because of the slower pace

I give it 4 1/2 "This is as far as you go. No More. This is it." Sheep

How to make a comic book costume. No sewing involved!

Do you want to make comic book clothes?
It's actually pretty easy, just time-consuming. I have no clothes-making skills. There is no sewing involved. It is all glue and tape!

This dress is called Wednesday. If you know why you get bonus points! Next time I'll have a name tag that says

My Name is... Wednesday.

Here is the finished dress. It is two pieces, a top, and a skirt.

Basic Supplies:
1. comics books
2. bed sheet or cloth of any type
3. Spray adhesive
4. Packing tape
5. colored duct tape
6. scissors, possibly a drill

Here is my office right before I started putting things together. I spent a long time picking the comic pages and panels I wanted. Using a whole page (like covers) takes up a lot of room and makes it easier to fill the space. I also found cool things to cut out in detail or cool panels to fill in between the large pages.

I found a circle skirt pattern online. It is the simplest skirt to make. It would be really cute as a short skirt but I decided to be more modest.
Use the spray adhesive (I used Gorilla glue) to glue down the comic collage. Do a small section.
Then use the packing tape to cover what you've done. Move to the next section.

Once you finish the skirt, you want to seal all the edges with duct tape. I used black, but white would look cool too. The skirt will wrap around you. I used duct tape and packing tape to hold it closed.
When you first put it on it won't hang right because it's stiff. I had to accordion fold it and squish it to make it hang correctly.

The top was just guesswork. It was easiest to make it sleeveless. I  cut the bed sheet to fit around under my arms. Then did the comic pages plus packing tape. I had a rectangular piece of "material" to work with.

You need a way to keep it on and not look like a barrel. I decided to do a corset style. It lets you make it fitted.
After a lot of measuring on myself, I got it the right size and lined all the edges with duct tape. I reinforced the edges for the corset string (shoe laces).
I used a drill to make the holes.
I wore a black cami top under it.

I needed a few accessories. I got a cheap cloth bag and gave it the same treatment as the dress. It made a cute bag to carry my things. You will need to bring your duct tape and packing tape with you in case something needs a touch-up or the skirt starts to fall off!

I bought some cheap deck shoes from Walmart. I thought about doing the packing tape method to decorate but didn't think it would hold up as well. So I bought some kids' party plates that had the POW design and cut out the design. Then stapled them to the shoes!

Last minute I thought it would be fun to have a thought bubble I carried with something funny on it. I wanted to use a dry erase material for it so I could change it up, but that didn't work out well so I went with poster board on a stick.

Finished look for Animazement.

After wearing it one time, it needed some touch-ups before I could use it again for GalaxyCon. Make sure you overlap the duct tape because it will start to split down the seams.
After wearing it twice I might have to retire this one. It was a prototype.

I have some cool ideas for other themes of dresses like this :) Stay tuned!
