Pre-Order: Kings of Eden by Mila Young & Harper A. Brooks

Kings of Eden
by Mila Young & Harper A. Brooks
January 27th, 2022
Genre: Dark Paranormal Romance
Cover Designer: Maria Spada
Hosted by: Lady Amber's PR
I've danced for some powerful and deadly men. But lately, instead of dollars, I'm collecting death warrants.

I’ve always played with danger. And as long as I followed the rules, I told myself I’d always be safe.

One night is all it took, one mistake, and now every damned mafia criminal in the Black Spades gang is after me.

But so are the Kings of Eden.

Cassius, Dracon, and Knox-- they're monsters that would make the devil's serpent look like an inchworm.

They want to play with me, break me, rule me.

What they don't know is that I'll never fall to my knees... even if that's exactly where they want me.

18+ Romance. Kings of Eden is a full length, dark paranormal romance with enemies to lovers themes, featuring three psychotic, tormented alphaholes and a sassy heroine. Contains some dark themes and panty-melting steam and is a story where the heroine will end up with more than one love interest.

Harper A. Brooks lives in a small town on the New Jersey shore. Even though classic authors have always filled her bookshelves, she finds her writing muse drawn to the dark, magical, and romantic. But when she isn't creating entire worlds with sexy shifters or legendary love stories, you can find her either with a good cup of coffee in hand or at home snuggling with her furry, four-legged son, Sammy.

She writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

Book Review: Excerpt: Sins In Sunlight (Of Courts and Desire Book 2) by Rachel Hailey

by Rachel Hailey
January 18, 2021
Dark Paranormal Romance
381 pages
Publisher: FyreSyde Publishing
The Sunfire Queen, Sierra, has waited for her chance to rule, thinking life would be better with her mother dead. She was wrong. The Court of Light is in Shambles. Her people are terrified and despise her. She has no friends, no love, and no hope. When a new war hovers on the horizon, Sierra must find the lost beastkyn Mikhail or her court will perish, and she'll lose her shot at redemption.

Quick to grin and quicker to kill, Mikhail has made his share of mistakes–being imprisoned has given him time to ponder each poor decision. But when Sierra frees him, he earns the opportunity to make some more. She's gorgeous and despite her fiery nature, as cold as the snow-capped mountains of Russia. He can't wait to see how fast he can make her melt.

What a beautiful cover this story has. Really and truly it's stunning. As the cover junkie I am, of course, that sold me right away. Sins in Sunlight was a first-time author read for me, did it knock my socks off? No. Was it the worst thing I've ever read? No.

As a PNR goes, sometimes there are installments that land just "middle of the road". But in a sea of so many different kinds of PNR's I certainly get how an author can really want to stand out from all the other fishes. Be the Jason Momoa of the sea, long hair and all. As Dory loves to sing "just keep swimming". So that's what happened, I kept on swimming with this one.

While at times there are very enjoyable moments between our main couple, overall Sierra was not all that I could have hoped for. She doesn't have any long-lasting moments or breakthrough events that would leave a lasting impression. There are books from the past that I read 10 years ago and can still relive in my mind with clarity. Characters that took hold in my heart and continue to live on to this very day. THAT is the kind of book I want to read. THAT is the journey I want to take.

Looking for some growth with this series and would certainly give it another shot in the future. Has some work to do but don't we all?

But when Sierra frees him, he earns the opportunity to make some more. She's gorgeous and despite her fiery nature, as cold as the snow-capped mountains of Russia. He can't wait to see how fast he can make her melt.

Excerpt:
Mikhail leaned down, giving her plenty of time to turn her head or pull away. The orange specks bloomed in her eyes. He closed the minuscule gap, capturing her lips. They were as soft as rose petals. He stifled a hiss of pleasure as her mouth opened under his, and when his tongue swept over hers, her entire body shuddered, and she moaned.

He deliberately kept his hands where they were, but how they wanted to roam down her body. Too soon, the song ended, and she broke the kiss.

He opened his mouth to apologize, but stopped. He wasn't sorry about keeping secrets. This was how his life was. Yet, when he looked up and found her brown eyes leveled on him, the scent of sadness rolling through the car, he was sorry this was the life he had to offer.

“How many other secrets are you hiding?” she asked, but not accusingly, more like she was as tired of his issues as he was of hers.

“Enough.”

“So, where does that leave us?” Sierra asked, voice low.

He smiled, baring his teeth. “The closest thing to friendship two Kyn royals can have.”

The pink lightkyn made a strangled sound, her back pressed harder against the door. He expected her to disappear into the glass.

Scalded by shame again, his talons shrank. He ran a hand through his hair. None of this was the girl's fault. He opened his mouth to apologize, but before the first syllable left his lips, she exploded into laughter. The sound was like chiming bells and as lyrical as a child's rhyme. Although beautiful, it was joyless and manic, the kind of sound the condemned might make as they laughed on their way to the gallows.

Reassessing her threat level, it was his turn to take a step away. Was she dangerous or merely unbalanced? Any creature who laughed like that needed to be handled carefully.

“Are you well?” he asked as the loud peals continued to ring out.

“No, I am most certainly not,” she said between gasps. “Are you?” She collapsed against the door, dropping her injured arm.

Wary of the lightkyn and her bizarre reactions, he shook his head. “No.”

She sobered and looked at him with soulful brown eyes. “I suppose you wouldn't be. Would you like to come inside?”

“Who are you?”

“Sierra.”

“Sierra,” he said, tasting the name. It rang with power and depth, matching this girl with wild laughter and sad eyes. “Will you help me escape before the new ruler finds me?”

She smiled, revealing even white teeth, and tilted her head. The last of the sunlight fell across her face like a mask. “I'm afraid it's too late for that. I am the new Queen of The Court of Light.”

KD's review
Getting 4 Sheep
As a spin-off goes, this one was really fun and super exciting to read. I had no knowledge of the ongoing series, but now I want to check it out. Hands down, a fantastic 126 page read that left me hot and bothered yet wanting more!

My one and only issue here was something so silly it's almost weird I even say anything. If you've watched my fav fang bangers of True Blood, you may recall when our leading lady Sookie Stackhouse meets her vampire man. He tells her so seductively that his vampire sexy ass name is.....Bill. Which is like, uh what now? That's how I felt about the leading guy in this one. His name is Cliff. Which for me was "meh".

Aside from his vanilla name, I really enjoyed this one.

Four Sheep
The rapid release novella series Dark Fae: Extinction is a spinoff of Quinn Blackbird’s Dark Fae series. This universe situates humankind in a post-apocalyptic landscape where they are hunted by the terrifyingly merciless dark fae. Small bands of survivors scramble to stay one step ahead of their predators while also combatting plague and starvation.

The first installment features Coralie, an antihero and unlikely survivor. She’s part of a ragtag band of human survivors squatting in abandoned flats in France. Scavenging for food and supplies, survival is number one and never assured. Coralie has a poor-little-rich-girl vibe, having experienced all the luxuries life has to offer except the elusive state of happiness. She flies under the radar, being just useful enough to justify her place in the group, but unassuming enough to avoid a leadership role. On the surface, she lacks the skills to be a true survivor, however, her instincts, luck, and nothing left to lose attitude keeps her alive.

Dark Fae: Extinction is an enemies-to-lovers romance. The first installment is light on the romance, heavy on the enemies. I typically steer clear of post-apocalyptic tales, especially this year, however, I liked this story. It’s dark and gory, but I think Coralie has great potential as a gritty, unapologetic main character. This rapid release novella format is intriguing and I’m looking forward to reading subsequent installments in this series, all of which are available on KU.

Imterview: PNR Author Delta James + giveaway

What inspired you to write this book?
As with most of the books, the hero stepped forward and said, I have a story to tell. I was never planning to write a paranormal novel. Then it was supposed to be a stand-alone. Instead, it spawned an eight-part series and inspired five novellas.

What can we expect from you in the future?
Next up is Best Seller, my contribution to the Dirty Daddies Anthology 2020. Followed by my contribution to Vanessa Vale’s Bridgewater Brides world, Their Outlaw Bride. Then on October 23rd, Duncan, Lord of the Skies, will make his appearance in Skylord. There’s more to come from both the Fated and Cerberus Groups, the final books in the Wild Mustang and Elemental Dragons’ series. And in 2021… a brand new series set in Virginia.

Do you have any “side stories” about the characters?
I tend to write novellas for my newsletter subscribers about secondary characters in books.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?
Dylan, the hero of my story, kept whispering, “I have a story to tell,” until I couldn’t ignore him any more and he channeled, the first of the Wayward Mates series.

Who designed your book covers?
I have worked with three amazing cover artists—Korey Mae Johnson who does all of my Stormy Night Publications and Allysa Hart and Madden Kole who design my indie-published books.

Anything specific you want to tell your readers?
As trite as it may sound, I hope they know how very much I appreciate them taking my characters to heart and inviting me into their lives.

How did you come up with name of this book?
This is something of a running joke. I am, by far, the worst person to name books. I am awful at it so I allow people who are much better at it than I to do it.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
In my opinion, any writer who tells you that characters are made up entirely from their imagination is lying to you, themselves or both. Writers are influenced every day by the people and events they encounter. It isn’t always conscious or intentional, but it is there.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reins of the story?
I absolutely have no control. Sometimes I think I do, but my characters slap me down and make sure I understand it is their story and will be told their way.

Fun Facts/Behind the Scenes/Did You Know?'-type tidbits about the author, the book or the writing process of the book
  • I work best when I have found a picture of my hero to serve as inspiration. I keep his image on a secondary monitor
  • I try to set my books in real places that people can go and see and touch and get their hands on

Brought to Heel (Wayward Mates Book 1)
by Delta James
July 12, 2018
Genre: Dark Paranormal Romance
Before he claims his mate, she must be brought to heel.

Skylar Owen is not used to taking orders from anyone and the last thing she wants in her life is an alpha who will demand her submission, but her world is turned upside down after a band of rogue wolves attacks her small, all-female pack. Ordered to disband her pack so that she can be matched with a mate, Skylar defies the Ruling Council, only to be hunted down and captured.

Though he can tell Skylar will be trouble the moment he sets eyes on her, Dylan Grainger knows how to tame a wayward woman, and it isn't long before the beautiful, feisty redhead is tearfully promising obedience as her bare bottom is soundly spanked. But Dylan quickly realizes that Skylar is much more than just a headstrong female in need of an alpha's firm-handed correction.

With each passing day, he grows more certain that she is his mate, and he knows that soon he must claim her, mark her, and take her hard and thoroughly. But will she resist her instincts, or will her body's response to his bold dominance leave her in no doubt that she belongs to him?

Publisher's Note: Brought to Heel is a stand-alone novel which is the first entry in the Wayward Mates series. It includes spankings and sexual scenes. If such material offends you, please don't buy this book. Also note that Brought to Heel shares its setting with Adaline Raine's previously published books Marked by the Alpha and Rules of the Pack, and it was written only after receiving Adaline's permission and support.

**Only .99 cents!!**

Book 1 – Brought To Heel Excerpt:
The news that they had failed completely hit Skylar as though it were a physical blow. Dylan closed some of the distance between them until she raised the knife in a very threatening position. He held his hand up to stop the men who weren’t currently holding onto one of the women from getting closer.

“It’ll be all right, Sky. I won’t let that little maneuver with the flare gun or you threatening me with a knife go without punishment. And I hate to tell you, but I think that punishment needs to be now for your pack’s sake, for my men’s sake, and frankly for your sake. The sooner you

recognize and accept my authority over you, the easier this will be on everyone. But I’ll make you a deal.”

“You have nothing to offer me that I want.”

“I think I do. I had planned to have your pack disciplined before we head for home. My thought was if the lot of you were nursing sore bottoms, you’d be a lot easier to deal with on a small boat. But, if you put down the knife and submit to my authority, you’ll be the only one spanked. I’ll give the others a pass as having acted on your orders. But mark my words, I intend to make your first spanking from me memorable.”

“That’s not much of a deal.”

“Oh, but it is. Either way, I intend to go sit down on that log, put you over my knee, bare your pretty little backside, and paddle it until it’s bright red and swollen. Get nasty while I’m doing it, and you’ll get your first taste of my belt. Take my deal and you’re the only one who gets spanked. Refuse my deal, I’ll disarm you, spank you until you’re crying, and take my belt to your backside and leave welts behind. And your pack members will each get a good taste of the discipline they obviously need before we head for home. So what is it to be, mate? Just you or your women too?”

She searched his face for the veracity and severity of his words. She realized he was willing to spare her girls but only if she submitted. “I have your word they won’t be disciplined for our bid for freedom?”

“You do.”

She took the knife and threw it, landing it precisely between his spread feet.

“All right, the rest of you get the women on the boat. My mate and I are going to have a little lesson in what happens when a naughty girl runs away and doesn’t heave to when she’s asked.”

The women all started to struggle. He looked pointedly at Skylar.

“Enough. We’ve lost. This bastard means to beat me regardless of what happens to you, but he promised to spare you if I gave him what he wants. There’s no reason for all of us to get beaten…”

“Spanked, Skylar, not beaten. Never beaten.”

“Funny how those of you who do the beating like to try to make out like there’s a difference between the two.”

Dylan chuckled. “You have a lot to learn about actually submitting, mate. But I’ll help you with that. Come here to me.”

Sheep Book Review: The Reckoning, by Alma Katsu

The Reckoning, by Alma Katsu, is book two of the Taker Trilogy. Katsu is a story teller, plain and simple; she can lay it all out there and let the reader sit back and enjoy the ride. While book two drifts away from the twisted darkness of the first in this trilogy it's equally compelling.

Plot:
Lanore McIlvrae is the kind of woman who will do anything for love. Including imprisoning the man who loves her behind a wall of brick and stone.

She had no choice but to entomb Adair, her nemesis, to save Jonathan, the boy she grew up with in a remote Maine town in the early 1800s and the man she thought she would be with forever. But Adair had other plans for her. He used his mysterious, otherworldly powers to give her eternal life, but Lanore learned too late that there was a price for this gift: to spend eternity with him. And though he is handsome and charming, behind Adair’s seductive façade is the stuff of nightmares. He is a monster in the flesh, and he wants Lanore to love him for all of time.

Now, two hundred years after imprisoning Adair, Lanore is trying to atone for her sins. She has given away the treasures she’s collected over her many lifetimes in order to purge her past and clear the way for a future with her new lover, Luke Findley. But, while viewing these items at an exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Lanore suddenly is aware that the thing she’s been dreading for two hundred years has caught up to her: Adair has escaped from his prison. He’s free— and he will come looking for her. And she has no idea how she will save herself.

Book Two picks up a few months after the end of The Taker (Book One) giving the reader a nice flow into the continuing saga. A rough road is in store for our leading lady Lanny and while she's forced to sit down and make some tuff decisions about the future I found her less engaging than in book one. Lanny simply lacked a little of that magic I felt for her in the beginning. She's still looking out for number 1 (herself) and those same old naive tendencies are lingering around, but overall the gal fell down a few notches for me.

Adair's back and man oh man is he a little ticked off about being locked up for the last two hundred years! He's got a whole new world to adjust to and loads to catch up on with the ongoings of his people but in true form he gets hip with the times. This guy was one dark and bad dude but now he's going through a change; can he grow past his wicked darkness to become a better man? And as the reader do you want to see that or is he the guy you just love to hate? I don't know just yet which way I stand on this issue of Adair but hopefully after book three hits I'll be able to come to a better conclusion one way or the other.
