Interview: Paranormal Romance Author Dania Voss + giveaway

How long have you been writing?
I began writing my first novel, On the Ropes in 2017 and was published in early 2018. It was such a thrill. Years of dreaming about being published and then making it happen. I wished I had started sooner!

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?
The main characters and important secondary characters are planned out ahead of time. And sometimes depending on how the story progresses, I find I need to create additional minor characters to fill in plot gaps and story lines.

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?
So many things to research! I wish readers understood how much time many of us put into researching for stories and series.

Just to name a few research areas: meanings of names, professions, details about where characters live, housing (Realtor.com and Zillow.com are my best friends), clothing, wedding and bridesmaid dresses, makeup, cultural traditions and stereotypes, etc.

Do you see writing as a career?
Up until a couple of years ago I had a very demanding full-time job in IT so I snuck in writing when I could. Since getting laid off at the end of 2023, my time is now my own and I see writing as my new career at long last. 😊

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?
I love to read but as a “slower” writer, if I get too caught up reading, that interferes with my writing. I do enjoy many sub-genres of romance. And I like the steamy stuff but also read the not so steamy stuff too.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?
I prefer quite for writing time. I used to have the television on but muted, but it was easy to get distracted. The internet is distracting enough without adding television distractions.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?
I write one at time. I like to start something and finish. If I get an idea for another story while I’m writing another, I’ll jot down notes so I can come back to it later.

Pen or type writer or computer?
I use a laptop with a 17.3” screen. I keep things simple and use MS Word since the formatting software uses it. I have a smaller 15.6” backup laptop. I’m a hardcore Windows gal.

Fate that refuses to be ignored

Genre: Steamy Paranormal Romance
The secret is out. Shifters exist and live among humans.

Humans fall into two camps: Those who consider shifters monsters but manage to co-exist with them, and those who want to get close to them, relishing their power.

Tessa Cooper, a single mother devoted to her three-year-old daughter, is firmly in the first camp, doing her best to keep her biases to herself. But one look at Dario Kingston Renzetti, a wealthy lion shifter, and she senses her life will never be the same.

The moment Dario sees Tessa in his bar, he knows he’s found his fated mate – age difference be damned. Learning she wants nothing to do with shifters – especially romantically – is another matter altogether. But nobody said he wasn't determined.

Can Dario’s persistence convince Tessa he’s not hiding dark secrets that would reinforce her opinion of shifters, or will she deny them their primal destiny?

Pick up this steamy, age gap, rejected mate paranormal romance today and find out.

Tessa was impressed by Dario’s and Fabrizio’s generosity. She now understood why Emelia had sung Dario’s praises since she’d started at the magazine two years ago.

Over delicious and filling appetizers, they helped Emelia calm down and organize what needed to be done in the next couple of hours before she and Fabrizio flew to Boston.

“I hate leaving you in the lurch for so many weeks though, Dario,” Emelia lamented. Then she glanced at Tessa with excitement in her eyes. “I know! Tessa should fill in for me while I’m gone. The idiots she worked for laid her off two days ago. That job was beneath her anyway. It would be perfect.”

Tessa’s head was spinning. In a matter of minutes, she had all of Emelia’s magazine system login credentials, had hugged her goodbye, and was now alone with Dario.

Who had removed his costume cape and was now gloriously shirtless.

She bolted out of her chair, needing to put some distance between them, and leaned against his desk. “Surely you can find someone else to fill in for Emelia. Someone already at the magazine? I appreciate her confidence in me, but I can’t work for you.”

Dario raised a brow from his seat at the conference table. Hunger flared in his hypnotic blue eyes. “Because of your shifter bias, as Emelia put it?”

A flush crept across Tessa’s cheeks as he called her out on her shifter issues. “I… I’ll admit shifters make me uncomfortable. I mean no offense to you and yours personally.”

Dario regarded her compassionately before he stood and walked toward her. He stopped in front of her, leaving some much-needed space between them. Still, she felt his body heat and her pulse ratcheted up.

“I appreciate that. Think of the practicalities, though. You’d be helping your friend when she needs you and finally getting work experience worthy of your Columbia MBA.”

Dario was right of course, but he did strange things to her emotions. Tessa felt out of control around him and that scared the shit out of her. “I could get that work experience anywhere. I don’t need to get it from your magazine. Why are you so insistent?” He stealthily got closer, making her tremble against her will, his unique scent driving her insane with desire.

He twirled a lock of her hair around his fingers, and Tessa’s body lit up with awareness. How did he do that?

“Because you, per sempre mio, are my mate.”

Tessa couldn’t bring herself to resist when Dario captured her lips in a hungry kiss. Their tongues tangled greedily, and her head swam. Their connection was electric. He tasted like heaven and sin, and she was hopelessly hooked.

They were both panting when they broke apart. “No. I can’t be your mate.” She whispered, but in her heart, she believed Dario was probably right.

“I know it doesn’t fit with your shifter bias narrative, but I and my lion knew the moment we saw you; the moment we smelled your delectable scent that you were our destiny. Our primal destiny.” Dario didn’t stop her when she moved away from him and rubbed her arms, nearly in a panic.

“You might be mistaken.”

“I’m absolutely certain and I think you are too. You feel the mating bond just as I do, don’t you?

If that’s what she felt toward him was called, she did. “No, I don’t. I’ll help Emelia out because she needs me, but we can’t ever kiss again. I mean it.”

The deep timbre of Dario’s laugh sent chills down Tessa’s spine.

“Oh, my sweet mate, but we will. Many more times. Because you’ll want to. You can count on it,” Dario declared as a wicked grin spread across his face.

From an early age, romance author Avina St. Graves spent her days imagining fantasy worlds and dreamy fictional men, which spurred on from her introverted tendencies. In all her day dreaming, there seemed to be a reoccurring theme of morally grey female characters, love interests that belong in prison, and unnecessary trauma and bloodshed.

Much to everyone's misfortune, she now spends her days in a white collar job praying to every god known to man that she might be able to write full time and give the world more red flags to froth over.

*This book is intended for mature readers 18+

Bonded Nightmare by E.M. Rinaldi is classified as one "spicy PNR" and I'd have to agree. It's hot, very hot.

I do love a push and pull in building a relationship, friendship sometimes is often hard fought and takes awhile to build trust. In this case, you have a couple who's not very keen on each other from the start. But that builds over time and with it the tension of a great romance.

Sometimes fate can come along and smack ya right in the face! Loved the journey these two take and the drama that ensues as they each try and figure out what the heck to do next! An adult book for adult readers, sexy as hell and cussing to go along with it.

I love the colorful snark in-between these pages and actually could have taken a lot more. Humor galore had me laughing at moments and certainly entertained throughout. This one is most enjoyable for those that love the push and pull in a relationship and steamy romance!

YA Paranormal Romance Author Michelle Areaux: Creating an alpha male beefcake + excerpt

As a HUGE fan of steamy, broody book boyfriends, I love to create a beefcake that anyone will want as their own hero. I always begin by crafting the personality.

Being suave and having a redeeming and endearing quality can make any guy hot.

So, in Dawned, Declan may be quiet, shy, and anti-social, but he also has a soft spot for his chaotic family and wants nothing more than to be loved.

He has dark hair and eyes, which I always think adds that mysterious spice that females adore in a male character.

The final dash of stubbornness rounds out the alpha male.

While we love a guy that falls for his girl, it is also a huge perk when they hold onto their own beliefs. Declan refuses to change his ways, even when it jeopardizes his relationship with Harlow, the main female lead in Dawned.

Declan’s ability to be his own man makes him the perfect piece of beefcake!

Taste Test:
I stop on the corner, ready to step onto crosswalk when I hear the rumble of a car heading my way. It is then that I decide to look up and away from the scattering of yellow and reds broken at my feet.

A pearl white sedan whips past me, stirring the leaves and air so that I feel as though I’m suddenly lost inside a tornado of fall.

The passengers turn to look out their window, probably confused by the strange girl who almost walked out in front of them. Their faces strike me and I forget how to breathe. It’s not because they are unfamiliar—Willow Falls is a small town. When you live here, you know everyone. No, their faces strike me as odd because they are the most beautiful and God-like creatures I have ever seen in my life.

A pair of ocean blue eyes locks on me and I still, my heart racing like a wild race horse. They belong to a guy around my age, but his striking features render me helpless. Raven black hair highlights his features as he stares me down. A blonde-haired guy, who is just as handsome, turns from the driver's seat and smiles a wicked smile that causes goose bumps to appear on my arms.

In the shadows, nothing is ever what it seems

Caroline Blake is a young reporter with a past almost as cryptic as her future. She never put much stock into her late aunt’s eerie tales of monsters and demons until she takes an assignment to cover the elusive Ashdown family’s Harvest Festival. As part of her assignment, she must live at the family’s mansion for six weeks and help prepare for the event.

No one has seen the family since the tragedy that occurred at the last festival almost thirty years prior. As the only female reporter on-site, Caroline must hold her own while uncovering why the family closed their doors all those years ago.

Perhaps the most challenging part of her assignment is dealing with her working partner, William Ashdown. The handsome lord of the house seems bent on testing her patience every time they meet. Still, there is something intriguing about him that she can’t ignore.

Caroline is soon swept into a world of generational secrets, unsettling mysteries, and unexpected romance. Amidst all the uncertainty, one thing is sure: in the shadows, nothing is ever what it seems.

Smoke and Mirrors felt like a new twist to an older style of writing. I read a reviewer who said it reminded her of "Dark Shadows" and dang I wish that thought came to me! But I have to agree, it does have a major flavor of time past.

Written with some well-thought-out characters, which helped the story flow along from page to page. At times a little too "wordy" for me, but readers who love the written word might sink their fangs into this one a tad deeper. There's not a huge helping of alpha male, yet that doesn't pull from the overall story of the leading pair making that connection.

I would have enjoyed some harder-hitting action and I do love that darker turns, however, overall this one was enjoyable and I would certainly continue the series down the road. I think a lot of potential is here, this saga grows on you as it goes like twisting vines. But in such a good way!

Getting 3 and 1/2 Sheep

KD

Excerpt:
I could never forget that day. There was an eerie stillness in the air as we stood there, waiting. Chills dimpled deep into my skin, and I swore it was watching me. It was watching all of us. A thing too far away for us to see but close enough to feel the slimy chill of its gaping stare. Like the unnerving lick of a wild animal. Or being scratched in that spot of your back that you can’t quite reach.

I could never forget how it all felt. The stale air clasping my skin, as if paralyzing me in place. The blind panic coursing through me. The sound of muffled breaths and stifled cries suffocating the air around us while we did our best not to make a sound.
None of us really knew what we were waiting for, and somehow that made it worse. Maybe we wouldn’t have been so utterly petrified if we’d known what we were up against. But we didn’t. We just stood there in the dark, the dewy mist of twilight teasing our tired eyes, and tried not to scream.

My aunt always told me to beware of the monsters in the closet. Of demons and shadows. Mythical beings she read stories about at bedtime. Creatures from the corners of our eyes and the echoes in our footsteps. She sang me eerie lullabies of cautionary tales, sinking in stories rich with disaster and fear so I would recognize any such creature if I ever saw one. When she’d speak these rehearsed sermons of the undead, her hands would tremble, and her eyes would go wide and far away—the shocking blue around her pupils turned into stagnant crystals ready to drop and shatter at any moment. It was as if she had left this world altogether and I had to wait for her to return.

I always wondered where these stories came from and why Maggie recited them to me every night before I went to bed. As a teenager, I thought she was simply out of touch with reality— that there was something about her that wasn’t quite right. I heard it when she spoke and saw it in those wide crystal eyes. Her lyrics never made their way into my mind, at least not until I was much older. They just swirled inside the little head that she cradled and brushed before bedtime.

I was a very protected child in a small home, in a small town, hidden deep within Western Europe.

When she died, I left the only place I’d ever known. I had no one else in Fairbrooke worth staying for.

So I moved to Brakerton Heights.

The story behind the story: Storiebook Charm (A Spellbound Novel 1) by Melissa Bourbon + giveaway

What inspired you to write this book? (Storiebook Charm)
I’ve written three different mystery series: Lola Cruz mysteries, Magical Dressmaking mysteries, and Bread Shop mysteries. After these, as well as my two romantic suspenses, I wanted to do something a little different. I’d visited the cute town of Glen Rose, Texas, where I met an amazing woman named Storie and spent time in her book shop, the Storiebook Cafe. This town and store inspired the book Storiebook Charm.

It was destined to be a romance. And what fun to be able to bring in a paranormal element. Storie, you see, is a witch. Not the type of witch that lives in Harry Potter’s world, but a witch that resides in Whiskey Creek, Texas, owns a bookstore/cafe, and has a thorn in her side: a mortal by the name of Reid Malone.

Storiebook Charm has some mystery elements, is a second-chance romance, and has a light touch of magic. I had so much fun writing this book. Storie and Reid met when they were younger. They meet again when they are older and this is where their story begins. There are obstacles in their way, of course. It’s a charming book set in a charming town. I hope it charms you!

Storiebook Charm (A Spellbound Novel 1)
by Melissa Bourbon
March 9, 2020
216 pages
Genre: Light Paranormal Romance
From National Bestselling author Melissa Bourbon comes a small town magical story with a heart-stopping hero, a sigh-worthy romance, beautiful writing, and characters that jump off the page. Get ready to be charmed by Storie and Reid, and watch out for the twist!

Storie Bell is a witch. Not the kind that lives in Harry Potter's world. No, she is more like Glinda, the good witch of the North, minus the munchkins and Dorothy. But a witch trying to blend in in a small southern town is no easy feat. She’s grown up believing that mortals and witchcraft don't mix.

Storie thinks the biggest threat to her future—opening The Storiebook Cafe, where happy endings begin— is Reid Malone, the very man she ran away from years before. He seems hell bent on getting in the way of her bookstore’s grand opening. But when a mysterious woman from Storie’s past shows up and makes claims that leave Storie confused, she rethinks her entire future.

Book Review: The Trouble With Tigers (Shenanigans Book 2) by Gail Koger + giveaway

The Trouble With Tigers (Shenanigans Book 2)
by Gail Koger
Sept 15, 2019
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Comedy, Action
Lions and tigers and skunks, oh my! Kandi Cain’s a psychic pet detective. Her cases range from wrangling baby goats, to finding lost critters. Her current case is rescuing a lion from a Nigerian warlord. Kandi knew dressing up as a demonic clown and walking a lion down a city street would freak people out. But, wow! She didn’t expect Armageddon.

The hot as hell Detective Dutch Callaghan’s on her trail again and showing more than a professional interest. Kandi’s talents have attracted the attention of a CIA black ops agent who wants her to steal twelve endangered white tigers from a Pakistani warlord. The mission’s crucial to prevent a terrorist attack.

Wait! What? Terrorists? What had she gotten herself into? Kandi wasn’t a superhero. She couldn’t bend steel with her bare hands, and she wasn’t faster than a speeding bullet. She’s Doctor Doolittle. She talks to the animals and occasionally the dead.

After reading the premise of this book I thought it sounded just like Ace Ventura. Which in no way turned me off! I loved Ace and even though the author wanted her to sound more like Dr. Doolittle, all I could think of was Ace!

The Trouble with Tigers is all around a fun and enjoyable story. It has serious moments but never really takes itself so serious or dark. Some PNR rests in that dark place, this one is a lighter and funnier romance for people looking to have laugh out loud moments.

There is a lot of sexy romance between the leading man Dutch and Kandi. As a pair, the two had a very believable and lovable dynamic. I didn't know this author before reading her book but I do look forward to checking out what she writes in the future.

Overall a very pleasant story with tons of fun and just enough adventure to entertain anyone.

Kandi’s current case is rescuing a Yorkie from a brutal dog fighting ring. Little does she know her dog napping suspect is involved in a series of brutal murders. Disguised as an elderly nun, Kandi rescues the Yorkie and, in the process, blows the hell out of Dutch’s undercover operation.

Her dark secret remains hidden from everyone except Magnus. He sees the evil growing stronger, changing her, and hurting her marriage. If Lexie doesn't rid herself of Kalfu's influence soon, the consequences will be irreversible.

When she unexpectedly inherits a cottage in the swamp, she uncovers a library of rare books on voodoo. Their spells can reverse the dark lord's hold and set right the balance between darkness and light. But such magic requires a great sacrifice; one Lexie isn't willing to make.

With the shadow spirits and raging voodoo gods vying for her attention, Lexie is on the verge of losing everything—her husband, her power, Magnus, and possibly, her life.

The battle for control of the mambo's soul is about to begin.

Lexie has settled into New Orleans with her husband and also her spirit guide Magnus. She is happy with her business which is doing exceptionally well and consults with the New Orleans Police Department on cases as well. There are others in New Orleans who want what she has and will stop at nothing to possess her power.

Lexie has complicated relationships with almost everyone in her life from human to spirit to god. Her relationship with Magnus is my favorite because it shows her desire to do right but all and that people, as well as spirits, can change. Her relationship with her husband is a little more palatable now but she is keeping some pretty important secrets from him that could jeopardize their entire life together. Kalfu, who is dark is the one that talks out both sides of his mouth and that drives Lexie nuts. This is a series that keeps you on your toes and is a delight to read.

The Thirst always wins…

Sooner or later, the thirst always wins…

After a thousand years, Lucian had given up any interest in the world. His only concern that night was finding his next drink, preferably from a flavoursome twenty-something with loose morals and no expectations. Then he saw her…

Kate is just a girl from the country, who came to the city with her brother to find a life away from their parents’ car crash. That is until the police came knocking on her door one morning and ripped her new life apart. Now she has nothing and no one, with only one on her mind. Revenge.

When these worlds collide, and the things that go bump in the night come calling, can these two mend the rifts in each other and give them what they need?

L.M. Mountford is the proclaimed “Lord of Lust,” a writer of short erotica. His newest release, Blood Lust, is vampire erotica with an edgy twist. The story has a slim plotline and centres on the sexual adventure of vampire Lucian and his human partner Kate. It is a literary porno with a plot.

Readers may enjoy Blood Lust. It is a quick read and seriously sexy. It can be easily read in a single sitting. Mountford does not, however, treat readers to fully developed characters or an original story. Kate’s fire and passion are ultimately negated by her subservience to and reliance upon Lucian. This story relies on many generic conventions and is not well crafted enough to set it apart.

I appreciate Mountford’s dark touches and his attempts to shock readers by marrying the seedy with the sensual. Blood Lust was sexy, but not wholly satisfying
