PNR Author Jennae Vale: TOP three things about putting together a book + giveaway

TOP three things about putting together a book giveaway

A lot of authoring these days involves off-the-page activities like being present on all sorts of social media platforms and reaching out to readers in creative ways.

I did a few giveaways in the past, in which I picked a hamper put together by someone else, and it worked out well. But I had no idea how much fun it was to do it myself.

In That Magic Mischief, Annabelle Walsh is an over-the-counter witch who's dipping in and out of a variety of approaches to divination and spell-casting in order to figure out the practice best for her. Dumped out of the blue by her long-term boyfriend, she tries to mend her heart with magic.

Little does she know that her Irish heritage connects her to a mischievous, mythological creature called a Pooka, who Annabelle summons into existence. A bargain between them causes all manner of mayhem, and turns her life around...mainly by turning it upside down.

DESIGNING AND CONCEPTUALIZING
Annabelle's interests inspired loads of ideas. Her love of all things metaphysical meant there were tons of things to choose from, and I decided to make a little gift bag to accompany the copy of the book. Would incense travel well? Which crystal should I choose? Should I start looking for feathers on the ground to put in there, too?

I decided to go with three small crystals — rose quartz, amethyst, and tiger's eye — and to skip the feathers as it seemed unsanitary. Incense didn't make the cut, but a tealight did. I also put in one of Annabelle's favorite candle spells.

Happily in my other career, I'm a graphic designer: I designed the spell as well as bookplates to sign. I also decided to include a copy of A Wolf in Duke's Clothing, the first in my Shapeshifters of the Beau Monde series, a mashup of Regency Historical plus werewolves.

SHOPPING!
I started at my local crystal shop. Since I was doing ten giveaways, I chose 30 crystals, which is a lot!

I got a discount, as I am known in my local crystal shop.

Next, the art store for the fancy paper to print out the candle spells. I found a gorgeous textured sheet close to the color of parchment and bought way more than I needed, to factor in mistakes. (Mistakes were made.)

Online, I found and ordered a bunch of organza gift bags and a 12-pack of Yankee Candle tealights in Angel's Wings. I'm don't usually go for scents on the powdery, sweet end of the spectrum, but I love these.

ASSEMBLING
When the bookplates arrived from Moo.com (highly recommend), the real fun began.

I am happy with the size of the bookplates I designed — I didn't want them to take up more space than they should, but I didn't make it easy on myself as they are a bit narrow and my signature is very loopy. I did loads of extras as I'm not in the US and am having help getting the prizes to the lucky winners, and I don't have any print versions of That Magic Mischief yet.

I found some shiny stars to put in the bags as well as adorable fabric roses: no real purpose to either, but to add to the festivity of it all. I very nearly reversed my decision on the incense but figured it was too risky: I didn't want my winners to have crumbly bits all over the rest of the goodies in the bag.

Putting it all together was so, so satisfying I was sorry I only had ten to make.

Actually, now that I think of it, there's another “best thing” about putting together a giveaway: giving them
away to lucky readers who I hope will enjoy the books as well as the added extras.

I cannot wait to do another one!

Genre: Time Travel Romance
ASIN:B09JB82GG7
Number of pages:190
Word Count: 57,000
Cover Artist: Sheri McGathy
Swashbuckling pirates plus time travel equals adventure and romance on the high seas.

What happens when a swashbuckling pirate meets a time traveling twenty-first century woman?

Edward Sutherland has always been a self-assured and confident man of the sea. He’s spent years alongside his friend and captain Jameson Mackall and until now has only ever wanted to find treasure and retire a wealthy man. He wasn’t expecting to travel through time and he certainly wasn’t expecting to meet a woman who would challenge and impress him at every turn.

Susanna Cole has lost her best friend in a boating accident. In a deep state of grief she is about to close her once thriving business when a stranger walks through her door with a letter from her friend. A letter dated 1724. Can she believe this man? Or is he playing some cruel joke?

Two strangers with one goal, to get back to the year 1724. There are plans to be made, treasure to be found and most importantly they must locate the one woman who can possibly help them in their quest. The feelings they are developing for one another will be put to the test when history, as it is written, comes into play and the life of Edward Sutherland is on the line.

Excerpt:
Boxes were piled high around the offices of NYC Party Planning, crowding in on the desk where Susanna Cole sat going through emails and messages from friends and business acquaintances.

This had been one of the hardest times of her life.

Life wasn’t the same without Danielle. She’d lost her best friend and business partner. They worked together and lived together. She was completely alone now and more depressed than she’d ever been in her life.

Her head popped up as there was a knock at the door. “Come in.”

The door opened and the sight in front of her was like a slap in the face. Some idiot had decided it would be a good idea to remind her of her loss by showing up in pirate costume. “Was there a costume party someone forgot to tell me about?” she snapped.

“I’m sorry. Costume party?” the man asked.

“I’m not in the mood right now. What can I do for you?” Maybe if she sounded cranky enough he’d just turn around and leave.

“I need your help,” he said, stepping closer.

“You’ve come to the wrong place. I’m no longer accepting new clients. The business is closing for the foreseeable future.” That should do it. There was nothing more to be said. If he was looking for a party planner he was going to have to go elsewhere.

“But this is the right address. You’re Susanna Cole, am I correct?” He raised his eyebrows and offered a questioning gaze.

His surly English accent was not charming her. The more she looked at him the more irritated she became. Seeing him was like rubbing salt into her wound. “Seriously, what’s with the outfit?” Whoever this guy was, he was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Reaching into his jacket pocket, the man pulled out an envelope and looked at it. “I was directed here by the people on board the ship. This is NYC Party Planning, Brooklyn, New York, isn’t it?” He straightened his coat and stood at attention.

Susanna noted his height. Easily over six feet tall, very handsome and from the way he stood it seemed he might be in the military. No matter. She’d had enough of being toyed with. “I don’t know what cruel joke you’re playing, but it is not appreciated. My friend recently drowned on a pirate cruise to Bermuda and I’m, I’m…” She wasn’t going to cry. Not in front of this stranger. She took in a deep breath, held her head high and stood up.

“I know the whole of it. Your friend Danielle fell overboard.” His voice was soft and low, filled with understanding.

Was he purposely trying to upset her? How did he know who Danielle was? “I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

He threw his head back in apparent exasperation before inhaling deeply and looking at her.

“Please don’t. I’m sorry. I understand you’re upset, but do let me finish what I have to say.” He paused, gazing at her with what seemed an impatient glare.

She kept silent.

“Thank you. I’ve a letter here for you from Danielle. It will explain everything.” He held the letter out for her to take.

Susanna’s hands shook as she took it from him. She couldn’t help but feel skeptical. She’d seen Danielle go overboard and disappear beneath the waves. They’d searched for her for days, as had the Coast Guard and they found nothing.

“Did she give this to you before we went on the cruise?” She glanced down at the letter. It was Danielle’s handwriting. There was no mistaking it. Everything down to the little heart she used to dot the letter I.

“No. She gave it to me yesterday morning.” He seemed to be watching and waiting for her reaction.

“This better be good,” she said. At this point, she was ready to throw him out the door and lock it behind him. If that didn’t work, she’d call the police, but her curiosity was piqued. She opened the letter and read.

Book Review: The Trouble With Tigers (Shenanigans Book 2) by Gail Koger + giveaway

The Trouble With Tigers (Shenanigans Book 2)
by Gail Koger
Sept 15, 2019
Genre: Paranormal Romance, Comedy, Action
Lions and tigers and skunks, oh my! Kandi Cain’s a psychic pet detective. Her cases range from wrangling baby goats, to finding lost critters. Her current case is rescuing a lion from a Nigerian warlord. Kandi knew dressing up as a demonic clown and walking a lion down a city street would freak people out. But, wow! She didn’t expect Armageddon.

The hot as hell Detective Dutch Callaghan’s on her trail again and showing more than a professional interest. Kandi’s talents have attracted the attention of a CIA black ops agent who wants her to steal twelve endangered white tigers from a Pakistani warlord. The mission’s crucial to prevent a terrorist attack.

Wait! What? Terrorists? What had she gotten herself into? Kandi wasn’t a superhero. She couldn’t bend steel with her bare hands, and she wasn’t faster than a speeding bullet. She’s Doctor Doolittle. She talks to the animals and occasionally the dead.

After reading the premise of this book I thought it sounded just like Ace Ventura. Which in no way turned me off! I loved Ace and even though the author wanted her to sound more like Dr. Doolittle, all I could think of was Ace!

The Trouble with Tigers is all around a fun and enjoyable story. It has serious moments but never really takes itself so serious or dark. Some PNR rests in that dark place, this one is a lighter and funnier romance for people looking to have laugh out loud moments.

There is a lot of sexy romance between the leading man Dutch and Kandi. As a pair, the two had a very believable and lovable dynamic. I didn't know this author before reading her book but I do look forward to checking out what she writes in the future.

Overall a very pleasant story with tons of fun and just enough adventure to entertain anyone.

Shenanigans (Shenanigans Book 1)
by Gail Koger
Kandi Cain inherited her Dr. Doolittle abilities from her grandmother and became a psychic pet detective. To her dismay, she just acquired the power to communicate with the spirit world, but dead people give her the willies.

Just when Kandi thought her life couldn’t get more complicated, the neighbor from hell moved in next door. The nasty guy’s name is Dutch Callaghan. How can someone so gorgeous be such a dick? Kandi could chalk some of it up to his job. Dutch is a Phoenix PD homicide cop.

Kandi’s current case is rescuing a Yorkie from a brutal dog fighting ring. Little does she know her dog napping suspect is involved in a series of brutal murders. Disguised as an elderly nun, Kandi rescues the Yorkie and, in the process, blows the hell out of Dutch’s undercover operation.

Kandi now finds herself a person of interest in her client’s murder and her sexy-as-hell, pain-in-the-butt neighbor is in hot pursuit of the Ninja Nun. Is Dutch about to slap the cuffs on? Only time will tell.

All those years of wild requests, screwy questions, bizarre behavior and outrageous demands have left me with a permanent twitch and an uncontrollable craving for chocolate. Don’t get me wrong. Book Review: BLACK SPRING (Black Wings #7) by Christina Henry + giveaways

BLACK SPRING (Black Wings #7)
by Christina Henry
Publication date: October 28, 2014
ISBN: 9780425266786

A former Agent of death, Madeline Black now has everything to live for, most importantly, her unborn child. But Chicago has become ground zero in a struggle between ancient creatures, and only Maddy can stop the carnage…

The mayor of Chicago has announced a plan to round up the city’s supernatural beings and put them in camps. With her due date looming, Maddy’s best move would be to lay low for a while. But not everyone is willing to respect her privacy. Hounded by tentacled monsters, a rogue shapeshifter, and a tenacious blogger, Maddy turns to her most powerful ally, her uncle Daharan, only to find him missing.

Just when it seems like things can’t get any worse, Maddy gets an invitation in the mail—to Lucifer’s wedding. Turns out everyone has been invited, friends and enemies alike. And with that kind of guest list, it’s highly unlikely there will be a happily ever after.

The heroine in this seventh book in the Black Wings urban fantasy series, Maddy, is pregnant with the child of a lover who is dead, has a popcorn-loving gargoyle sidekick named Beezle, has three dogs that are not dogs, but Retrievers, is in a complicated relationship with the son of an angel and Puck, has a dragonshifter many-greats uncle and is the granddaughter of Lucifer. She is also Lucifer’s Hound of the Hunt. So many interesting characters. There is something bad happening concerning a shapeshifter who appears to want to kill her and hers. Will Maddy survive it all to give birth to her child?

If you like anything about angel and demons, along with other paranormal beasties, stirred into an urban fantasy, this book will do it for you. One word, make sure you read others in the series, so you won’t get lost with who is who in Maddy’s life. I’ve read the series from the beginning, so it made it easy for me. Ms. Henry has given birth to another great read.

I give Black Spring 5 sheep

Guest Post: Do your dreams have power over you? by Donna Galanti + giveaway

Do your dreams have power over you?
by Donna Galanti

Do you dream about the same thing over and over?

For years I had theme dreams. How I wish they were of nice things. Rainbows. Birthday parties. Cooing babies.

Nope. Mine were scary. A man with a machete chasing me to whack off my head. Of course I never actually died in this dream. I always woke up just before being decapitated. But the heads of my loved ones did roll.

Maybe dreaming of monsters is why my favorite show is Supernatural. Okay, it wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that Dean and Sam Winchester are HOT! I guess I’ll have to keep them forever in my dreams. Sigh…

And perhaps we’re better off not remembering our dreams – or re-living them over and over. Perhaps they need to stay as dreams to ward off the dark.

In my paranormal suspense novel, A Human Element, Laura Armstrong is also haunted by nightmares of an evil man chasing her. Only, this man is not a figment of her imagination. He is very real and very capable of killing her from afar. When her dreams become a reality and she discovers her stalker is part of her own destiny she has to decide whether to kill him or redeem him. Ben Fieldstone in A Human Element also dreams of a Laura and a meteorite coming to crush him to death, as it did his parents.

But back to machetes. I ran for miles in my dreams avoiding decapitation from that unknown machete wielding maniac. He swung blades of steel seeking my neck. He chased me. On and on.
Then one day a crowd came. They surged onto the brute and whacked him to death with garden hoses. He disappeared and never returned. For the first time someone came to help me. And they destroyed the thing that haunted me most. They gave me hope.

Maybe this is the reason I write from the darker side with a touch of hope. No matter how dark things are, there is hope for survival.

And then it hit me. The machete man was awfully familiar to the villain in my book, X-10. I think he hides inside me and comes out when I write, and that is the only place he’ll remain safe from now on. If not, I’ll send back in the angry hoard of garden-hose attackers to get him good.

The power of dreams, right? Have your dreams had power over you?
Excerpt - Ben Fieldstone’s Dreams That Haunt Him:
That night he dreamed. He stood at the lake on its shore. The stillness covered him in peaceful quiet. The moon shone high overhead painting the wave tops with gold that lapped at the water's edge. Something moved in the distance on the path leading around the lake. It was a girl. She walked toward him as if she knew him. Finally, she stood before him and smiled. He found himself smiling back.

She took his hand and stared at him with her large, brown eyes. She looked so lovely. Her hand was warm in his, her touch sent waves of yearning through his body. She reached up on her toes and kissed him. He squeezed her hand and found himself kissing her back. Their tongues intertwined in a soft, embracing dance. He gave himself to her mouth, falling into her sweet wetness.

She put her hand behind his neck and pulled him closer. "Ben, do you know what I am?" Her eyes held him in a trance.

"What you are? What do you mean?"

"Come with me, I'll show you."

He followed her as she led him down the path. Then he looked up. Something green shone in the sky. The meteorite. It would crush them. She was leading them toward the spot where it would crash.

"No!" He pulled her with him to go back.

"Come." Her large eyes drew him into her.

"No, follow me," Ben urged. "Can't you see, it's coming!"

"Come." She caressed his hand. "It's where I belong. We can belong together."

"No!" He dropped her hand and ran.

His legs pumped fast over the rocks and fallen logs on the path. He turned once. She still stood there under the moon. The green thing filled the sky behind her as it streaked toward them.

She was smiling.

About A Human Element:
Evil comes in many forms…

One by one, Laura Armstrong’s friends and adoptive family members are being murdered, and despite her unique healing powers, she can do nothing to stop it. The savage killer haunts her dreams, tormenting her with the promise that she is next. Determined to find the killer, she follows her visions to the site of a crashed meteorite in her hometown. There, she meets Ben Fieldstone, who seeks answers about his parents’ death the night the meteorite struck. In a race to stop a madman, they unravel a frightening secret that binds them together. But the killer’s desire to destroy Laura face-to-face leads to a showdown that puts Laura and Ben’s emotional relationship and Laura’s pure spirit to the test.
