She believes him the enemy. He's determined to prove her wrong.

Former relic-hunter and soldier for Hell, Stryker spends his days of redemption running a holiday store in a cheery little town in the California wine country. He’s not complaining. The gig puts him across the street from his one and only heart’s desire—a blue-eyed angel with a clever brain, a hot bod, and the wickedest right hook this side of Heaven. Too bad his delectable Angel Cake won’t give him the time of day.

Warrior-class angel and restaurateur, Zara keeps busy designing interesting foods and beverages for the eateries and gym she owns with her celestial teammates. She certainly has zero time or interest in the annoyingly sexy, darkly bronzed demon who drove her bonkers for eons while working for the other side.

But then a freak storm complete with hell beasties rampages their hometown, and God and the cupids order the pair to team up to investigate. Frustrating news for Zara. Fantastic for Stryker. His new mission? Show his feisty angel their partnership is meant to extend far beyond this one job for Heaven...

Happy Halloween Month, Everyone! For Halloween every year, I like to share my favorite spooky story from my family’s arsenal of tales about the Fae. In this one, my Irish grandmother recounts her personal encounter with a Banshee when she was a teenager. Enjoy!

Bumped by the Banshee
by Celia Breslin
… I lived in a large two-story house with my parents, younger sister, and grandmother. It was a cold, winter evening, nothing special or out of the ordinary. My family dined together, then my sister and I cleaned up while our parents and grandmother drank tea. We joined them at the dining table to do our homework, but my grandmother said she was tired and went upstairs to bed. My parents followed shortly after that, but my father paused on the landing.

“Maeve, it’s going to be a cold night. Fetch us some coal, please.”

I abandoned my homework, grabbed the empty coal bucket from the kitchen, and went down into the cellar. I filled my bucket and returned to the stairs. I had one foot on the first step when the temperature in the cellar, already cold, dropped dramatically. Chills ran down my back. Behind me, someone moaned.

But how could that be? I was alone...

Terror rooted me to the spot. The keening grew louder. I dropped my bucket and covered my ears. A cold wind bumped against my back. I stumbled forward as the shrieking wind rushed over me and up the stairs.

But how could that be? The cellar had no windows...

Above me, the cellar door slammed shut. The sound broke me from my stupor. I screamed and ran up the stairs and out of the cellar, through the kitchen and dining room, and up the stairs to my room. My parents and sister found me under my bed, shaking like a puppy lost in a snowstorm.

“Maeve! Maeve! What is it? What’s wrong?” They asked me, while pulling me from my hiding place.

“I heard the Banshee wail.”

We stared at each other in silence, all of us reaching the same conclusion moments later. We hurried to my grandmother’s room.

She was dead.

Character Confessions: White Witch Ceva from Omega's Choice by Lilli Carlisle + excerpt

White witch Ceva has some words for her author Lilli Carlisle...

Our interviewee today is Ceva the white witch who likes to drop in unannounced, kick ass and mouth off. Also with us is the author of Omega’s Choice, Lilli Carlisle. She and Ceva don’t always see eye to eye.

Lilli: Thank you for inviting us to talk with your I Smell Sheep readers. I’d like to introduce Ceva a white witch and our heroine Helena’s godmother. Among Ceva’s many skills, she has a penchant for battling things bigger than her and still managing to survive.
Ceva: At this juncture I have to say I’m not at all pleased I was only a secondary character in Omega’s Choice. I deserved a larger role.

Lilli: Umm, I beg to differ. You had quite a large role. Pivotal in fact.
Ceva: As well I should. I’m a large personality.

Lilli: Ahhh, we’re engaging in understatements now, are we?
Ceva: (Ceva harrumphs.) I deserve to have my own book. You know it as well as I do, but you have to stop waking us up at two o’clock in the morning to work. I’m praying that nonsense has run its course.

Lilli: But between two and four a.m. is when I have my greatest ideas.
Ceva: Uh, yeah, when (coughs behind her hand) normal people are sleeping.

Lilli: (Smiles.) Duly noted. So, since we’re chatting in the cold light of day, why don’t you tell me who should be the male lead character in your book, which, as you know, is next?
Ceva: Well, he’s going to have to be strong, loyal and lethal.

Lilli: Lethal?
Ceva: Yes, lethal and muscular. With sandy blond hair and moss green eyes.

Lilli: Well that’s pretty specific. Let me see…could it be you’re aching for Lothar?
Ceva: (smiles wickedly) Come on give me a chance, here, Lilli. Don’t make a girl beg.

Lilli: Okay Ceva, I’ll give you a chance. Or, maybe Lothar will.
Ceva: Stop toying with me. I’m a witch. Remember?

Lilli: As if you’d let me forget. To everyone out there, Ceva’s Chance will be released soon.
Ceva: GREAT.

Lilli: Manners. Say thank you to the nice readers.
Ceva: Yeah, thanks folks. (Ceva just poofed out.)

Scarred but powerful, Black Ridge Wolf Pack leader Aldric Forst has been selected to mate with an Omega—but first he must protect her from the dark forces that would corrupt her magic.

In a realm of elves, ogres and white witches, where danger is ever-present, Princess Helena Lichtenberg lost her parents at a young age. Raised by her uncle and aunt, Helena values family above all else. Now, as decreed by tradition, it is time to select a mate.

HER ALPHA

Enormous, scarred and scary, Black Ridge Wolf Pack leader Aldric Forst has never drawn the eye of any Omega. Why would he? But, on this, the night of what he swears is his last selection celebration, everything is different. One of those most beautiful, magical and powerful women, the niece of the king and queen themselves, wants him. And Aldric has never wanted anything more in return. No force—no matter how dark, no matter how powerful—will take Helena from him.

EXCERPT:
Princess Helena took that moment to turn toward him again. Instantly, his heart raced, his palms became sweaty, and a nervous excitement rolled around in his stomach, which he wasn’t entirely sure he liked. After all, he was a feared warrior, people looked to him for guidance and strength, and now he felt like he was going to pass out because a gorgeous woman was smiling at him with such joy.

As Amalia spoke to Helena, the princess’s small omega stone on her forehead glowed, and it was impossible to miss the waves of happiness coming from her.

“Looks like the princess is happy you agreed to dance with her, brother.” Godric looked about ready to burst with excitement. “Should I call home and have the rest of our party get on the road?”

“No, not yet, Godric. Let’s see how the evening goes first. Then we can call in reinforcements.” Aldric didn’t want to get ahead of himself. He refused to be let down again. “What do you think Lady Amalia meant by she’d waited years?”

“I have no idea, but I do know the only way you’re going to find out is by asking the princess herself. Ready to waltz, brother?”

“At least all mother’s lessons are about to come in handy. What if she expects our normal life to be like this?” Aldric panicked.

“Okay, now you’re just looking for problems that aren’t even here yet. Get out there and sweep that princess off her feet with the alpha you are. Wait until I tell Cassandra she was right yet again.” Godric had a look of absolute glee at the prospect of making that call back to the pack.

“Yeah, well, if Cassandra was right about this, brother, then she also predicted that I would have to fight for my omega.”

Godric turned to face Aldric and all humor fled from his expression. “If we have to fight for your omega, then it’ll damn well be one we win, I can assure you of that. If this night goes well, I’ll be calling in more warriors as well. They will be here before the sun rises.” Both Theron and Tofa nodded in agreement, even if Theron continued to tap away on his tablet.

“We shall see, Godric. Let’s hope I don’t step on her foot. Then it may be the royal guard we need to fight.” Aldric laughed as he, Godric, Theron, and Tofa stood and made their way across the ballroom to stand in front of King Leonidas, Queen Alexandra, and Princess Helena.

Princess Helena was simply stunning; her emerald green eyes beamed with happiness as he approached. Aldric had never felt this level of immediate attraction before in his lifetime. Helena’s curly blonde hair was pulled away from her face, showcasing her royal tattoo and tiny vines twisting down her slender neck to her collarbone. Her smile lit up everyone and everything around her and her green eyes shone with happiness.

Aldric, Godric, Theron, and Tofa stood before the king and queen, bowing respectfully and waiting for King Leonidas to speak. The entire time, Aldric hoped like hell he didn’t screw this up.

The room had grown strangely quiet.

Re-release: American Gods by Neil Gaiman + giveaway

William Morrow is giving away a (5) sets of American Gods, Anansi Boys, Neverwhere and Stardust

American Gods
by Neil Gaiman
August 16, 2016
Publisher: William Morrow
Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy
Format: Ebook/Paperback/Hardcover
Newly updated and expanded with the author’s preferred text. A modern masterpiece from the multiple-award-winning master of innovative fiction, Neil Gaiman.

First published in 2001, American Gods became an instant classic, lauded for its brilliant synthesis of “mystery, satire, sex, horror, and poetic prose” (Washington Post) and as a modern phantasmagoria that “distills the essence of America” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). It is the story of Shadow—released from prison just days after his wife and best friend are killed in an accident—who gets recruited to be bodyguard, driver, and errand boy for the enigmatic trickster, Mr. Wednesday. So begins Shadow’s dark and strange road trip, one that introduces him to a host of eccentric characters whose fates are mysteriously intertwined with his own. For, beneath the placid surface of everyday life, a storm is brewing—an epic war for the very soul of America—and Shadow is standing squarely in its path.

“Pointed, occasionally comic, often scary, consistently moving and provocative….American Gods is strewn with secrets and magical visions.”—USA Today“Original, engrossing, and endlessly inventive.”—George R. R
. Martin

Interview: Suzanne Johnson (Belle Chasse book tour) + giveaway + excerpt

Meet Suzanne Johnson! She talks about her Sentinel of New Orlreans urban fantasy series, the meaning behind the titles, Cajun mermen, best places to eat in New Orleans, gators, trash TV and there is even a mention of vampires...

Sharon: Hello Suzanne. The 5th book in your Sentinels of New Orleans series, Belle Chasse, releases. Will you tell our followers who aren’t familiar with the series what it is about.

Suzanne: Hi, Sharon—thanks for having me here today! The Sentinels of New Orleans series is about what happens when Hurricane Katrina sets a whole series of events and power struggles in motion by tearing down the invisible borders between modern New Orleans and the preternatural world. The wizards have traditionally been in charge of maintaining the borders and keeping order, but things begin to spiral out of control until, in Belle Chasse, the final events are set in motion. The story is told from a young woman who starts out as a strong but inexperienced “Green Congress” wizard (ritual magic) who learns she also has enough elven DNA to do the elves’ magic. It makes her a target as she gradually learns throughout the series what her strengths and weaknesses are—and who she can and can’t trust. All the book titles are names of streets in New Orleans.
Sharon: Oh crap! They are all street names! *headdesk* Are the streets an important part of the plot?
Suzanne: LOL, not really, although they are related to the plot in rather obscure ways—sort of an in joke, I guess. ROYAL STREET had a lot of “New Orleans” royalty in it, with Louis Armstrong and Marie Laveau and Jean Lafitte. RIVER ROAD was set in the parish communities along the Mississippi River. ELYSIAN FIELDS, which is the mythical place of the dead, had necromancers doing all the dirty work. PIRATE’S ALLEY was, of course, Jean Lafitte beginning to step up and be a bigger player in the game. And BELLE CHASSE is “beautiful hunt” in French, and DJ is definitely being hunted!

Sharon: You also write a vampire PNR series and a romantic suspense series along with the urban fantasy series (Sentinels of New Orleans). Is there a genre you prefer or find easier/harder to write?
Suzanne: They’re surprisingly similar—at least the way I write them (all the non-urban fantasy is written under the name Susannah Sandlin). My urban fantasy has a lot of action and a little romance. My paranormal romance has about 50-50 action and romance, as does my romantic suspense. So the only real difference is the heat level (higher in PNR) and whether or not all the characters are human! I find urban fantasy easier to write because I tend to be a plot-heavy writer and urban fantasy, with its lighter degree of romance, tends to be a plot-heavy genre.

Sharon: If you had to pick one of your worlds to live in, which would it be?
Suzanne: Oh, that’s tough! Both DJ’s world and the world of my Penton Legacy vampire series are treacherous places right now. But if the Sentinels world can get its political shenanigans in order—and keep me away from the faeries (because they are nutballs)—I think it would be an interesting world. I mean, c’mon. Cajun mermen! Undead French pirates! How could I not live there?
Katie: *Katie ninja tumbles into the room* Where are they? The mermen and pirates?! *Looks at Suzanne* Tell me you brought enough to share…
Suzanne: Hahaha—Jean Lafitte and his merry band of French pirates are EVERYWHERE (but he’s living at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans—tell him I said “bonjour.” And many of the Cajuns in the commercial fishing industry in South Louisiana are secretly mermen—aquatic shapeshifters. They love food and sex, and not necessarily in that order. ;)

Sharon: Your bio says you are a displaced New Orleanian. Was it because of Katrina? What were some of your favorite places to eat in N.O. and what are the must dos for visitors?
Suzanne: I was living in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit—PTSD from the flooding ultimately drove me to start writing fiction—but I didn’t leave the city at that time. I went back for several years afterward to help rebuild. I finally moved for family reasons (aging parent), but keep threatening to go back when I leave my day job next spring to write full time. I still consider NOLA my hometown. Visitors should visit Mardi Gras World, which is where all the floats are kept in the off-season. It’s amazing and is one of the key sets I use in BELLE CHASSE. My favorite restaurant, bar none, is Jacques-Imo’s on Oak Street, but other favorites are Commander’s Palace in uptown, the Napoleon House on Chartres in the French Quarter, and Mandina’s in Mid-City. Now I’m hungry! The French Quarter is an amazing walk through history, but I always encourage visitors to get out into the real city—take the streetcar down St. Charles Avenue, walk around the Garden District, shop in the markets along Magazine Street. See the city where New Orleanians live and work!
Sharon: Katie and I just visited New Orleans a few weeks ago! I wish we had talked to you first. We stayed in the Garden District and rode the trolley to get around. I plan on becoming a trolley lady. I will just ride it all day and night….
Suzanne: I love the streetcars! Especially the green line that goes down thru the Garden District. When you become a Trolley Lady, beware of cars doing U-turns in front of you—we’d have at least one streetcar-on-vehicle collision every week.

Sharon: Your bio also mentions trash reality TV. What is your current obsession? And if you could be on a reality TV show which would it be…or would you create your own?
Suzanne: OMG. I recently binge-watched all twelve seasons (of six episodes each, mind you) of “The Deadliest Catch.” I could not be on that show as much as I love watching it. I’d be one of those greenhorns on the crab boats that spends the entire season barfing and whining about being sore and being ridiculed by the boat’s crew. I’d like to be a judge on “Project Runway” since I have no skills as a designer. I can be plenty snarky about the designers’ creations, though. I could create a reality show about my day job…oh, wait. That’s been done. It was called “The Office.”

Sharon: Got pics of your gator collection? Did you ever have one as a pet?
Suzanne: No, although the little ones are awfully cute. Sadly, they grow about a foot a year and once they get all those big teeth and weigh 500 pounds, they don’t worry too much about whether it’s a catfish or your arm they’re having for lunch. But pics attached!

Sharon: Aw! How did Disco get his name?
Suzanne: He’s made of blown glass and he’s kind of shiny and has glitter on him that doesn’t show up very well in the photo, so Disco he became. He was a gift from a coworker.

Sharon: Who was your celebrity crush…did you have poster of them on you wall?
Suzanne: Oh Lord, I’ve had so many it’s hard to keep track of them. I’ve done multiple rock star phases, a pro wrestler phase, an NBA player phase…I guess now I’m on my crab boat captain phase—LOL. Never had much for movie stars, though.

Sharon: What song will make you stop what you are doing and dance and or sing along?
Suzanne: I’m a music junkie but have really, really eclectic taste. I’m looking at my song list on iTunes right now and the next one I see that always has that impact is Passenger’s “The Wrong Direction.” It’s so me. After that, I see an old song by the late, great Warren Zevon that never fails to make me sing: “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner.” Gavin deGraw’s “You Make My Heart Sing Louder.” And anything by Simon Beaudreau, my current obsession.
Sharon: Do you speak French? (is that what Simon’s song are in?)
Suzanne: I read French and speak some. I listen to a lot of French-Canadian music (Simon’s just one example), and pretend it helps me understand spoken French…but not very well.

Sharon: What is your favorite smell?
Suzanne: Honeysuckle. There’s a company in New Orleans, Sweet Olive Soap Works, that makes a honeysuckle-scented cream I’d buy by the gallon if they sold it in containers that big. Thank God they ship.
Sharon: Oh! That’s a good one. Do you like to taste the nectar?
Suzanne: I’ve never tried it! I wonder if it’s as sweet as it smells? Must do research!
Sharon: O_O you've never pulled a flower off, pulled out the stamen and sucked out the nectar?! And you're from the south? *shake my head*

Sharon: Do you have a favorite meme?
Suzanne: Do not show me dog videos. I will be lost for hours. I see them on Facebook and run the other way.

Sharon: Is there such thing as too spicy?
Suzanne: For me, yes. I love jalapeno and cayenne in just about anything, but when you get to the habanero stage it’s too hot for me.

Rapid Fire:
Sharon: East coast or west coast?
Suzanne: East Coast
Sharon: State you love to visit on the east coast?
Suzanne: I have never been north of Boston so I might change my mind when I get to do that, so for right now, I’ll say North Carolina. I love the area around Wilmington.
Sharon: I live in NC! Grew up near the beach.

Sharon: fried gator or grilled gator?
Suzanne: Grilled gator sausage

Sharon: tacos or spaghetti?
Suzanne: Tacos

Sharon: Coke or Pepsi?
Suzanne: Coke
Sharon:*pouts, kicks stuffed alligator*
Suzanne: Hahaha—I live two hours outside Atlanta—I think it’s decreed that we drink Coke :)

Sharon: Vampire strength or Vampire speed?
Suzanne: Strength

Sharon: fight a wizard or fight an elf?
Suzanne: In my Sentinels world, wizard. Elves can do scary stuff!
Sharon: *Katie whispers* I don’t think *Katie pokes Sharon in ribs* Ow! Okay…sex with a wizard or an elf?
Suzanne: Oh, an elf, hands down. They are VERY, VERY PRETTY and sexy. But just sex, mind you. No emotional entanglements because they can do scary mental stuff!

Suzanne Johnson's "strong and intriguing" (Publishers Weekly) urban fantasy series continues with Belle Chasse. The Sentinels of New Orleans series has earned starred reviews from Library Journal ("a resourceful heroine who relies on her magical ingenuity") and PW ("vivid...a lively tale jam-packed with action, magic, and intriguing plot twists").

With the wizard-elven treaty on the verge of collapse, the preternatural world stands on the brink of war. Unless former wizard sentinel DJ Jaco manages to keep the elven leader, Quince Randolph, focused on peace and not personal matters.

With no one on the throne, Faerie is in chaos, with rival princes battling for power. The still-undead pirate, Jean Lafitte, is building his own army of misfits, and DJ stripped of her job and hiding in the Beyond to avoid the death sentence handed down by the wizard Council of Elders can’t get anywhere near her beloved New Orleans or her significant something-or-other, Alex.

It's time to choose sides. Friends will become enemies, enemies will become allies, and not everyone will survive. DJ and her friends will learn a hard lesson: sometimes, even the ultimate sacrifice isn’t enough.

Excerpt:
I expected Christof to start a snowstorm above Rand’s head. What I didn’t expect was for the prince to lower his head and charge Rand like a raging bull, head-butting him in the midsection. They hit the ground, and I saw my chance at the same time Eugenie spotted me.

I motioned her toward the woods where the transport lay. To hell with the Blue Congress wizards. We were going to make a run for it while Christof kept Rand too busy to notice.

She set off for the woods, and I met her halfway. “My family thinks I’m crazy!” she wailed, loud enough to draw the attention of the tall, skinny Blue Congress wizard with the rooster haircut.

“Hey, stop!”

Holy crap. I whipped out the elven staff, paused long enough to aim just to the right of the wizards. They already had their hands up and were doing some of their nifty Blue Congress magic when I released my fire and blew up the tombstone next to them, sending a rain of marble and playing cards onto their heads. Around us, evidence of their magic appeared as tombstones began moving to block our escape route.

I grabbed Eugenie’s arm and pulled her around a marble stag the size of a small SUV. It had lowered its head and pawed the ground as if to charge. Blue Congress magic was so damned cool— create and re-create.

“Stop, DJ!” Eugenie grabbed my arm as I tried to race past her. “A sinkhole!”

I looked stupidly at the ground in front of us, which had opened a gulf big enough to drive a Greyhound bus into. “Go around and run fast,” I shouted, sending another shot of the staff toward the Blue Congress wizards and blowing up a ginormous marble eagle perched atop a nearby tomb.

We didn’t stop to see if the stag was chasing us, but ran for all we were worth. Finally, at the edge of the tree line, I hazarded a look back at Christof and Rand. The faery stood watching us; the elf had crumpled on the ground. Not dead, though, because in my head, far behind my protective barriers, I heard him yelling my name.

Christof grinned and motioned for us to move along. He didn’t have to motion twice, because the wizards were chasing us, still chanting and doing their finger dance. The stag was getting way too close.

I raised the staff and blew a hole in the earth in front of the advancing stag, forcing him to change direction. Luck was on our side for a change— the stag began charging toward the wizards instead, who had to stop pursuing us in order to protect themselves from being trampled beneath marble hooves.

“Let’s run to the transport before those idiot wizards can get out from under the stag.” I grabbed Eugenie’s hand and we ran to the clearing. “Help me roll this werewolf out of the transport.”

To her credit, she didn’t ask a single question. We tipped the werewolf onto his side and rolled him outside the interlocking circle and triangle, leaving him at an awkward angle with his feet in the air. Oh well.

I touched the staff to the edge of the transport and said, “Winter Palace, Faery” just before the Blue Congress wizards reached the edge of the clearing. I waved at them as the transport sucked the air out of my lungs. They were too late.

As soon as we materialized on the round floor of ice in the Winter Palace, Eugenie screamed. I figured she was getting her first look at the grisly remains of Faerie Princess Tamara until a blinding light knocked me off my feet and a big crack appeared in the ice between us.

“Where is my brother?”

I whirled to see Florian sitting on a block of ice behind us bundled in a heavy coat, a blanket spread beneath him, no doubt to protect his royal assets from getting cold and wet.

“He’s in Shreveport, Louisiana, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help church, having a fi stfi ght with an elf,” I said, pretty confident that of all the things he might expect me to say, that wasn’t it.

Jeffe Kennedy guest post: This kind of thing is my catnip! (Lonen's War book tour)

So, I had this idea for a book. I’ve been nursing it along for some time.

I wanted the king and queen of warring kingdoms to agree to a marriage of state. You know – all that juicy marriage-of-convenience/enemies-to-lovers tropey goodness. Getting to write a slow-burn romance appealed to me, too. And I could just picture my hero and heroine, from very different worlds, both proud and strong, having to find ways to work together.

A couple of years ago, when my agent asked about my next planned project, I enthusiastically described this concept. He wasn’t as enthused, saying it sounded too much like THE MARK OF THE TALA.

This is the thing about writers, though. We write a book on a certain theme and it goes in particular directions that might not totally scratch the story itch that birthed the idea. This is why Robin McKinley has written TWO Beauty & the Beast retellings. She’s said that she wasn’t completely satisfied by the first one, which annoyed her for years, until she finally recapitulated and wrote a second one.

That’s how I felt!

I mean, I love the story that THE MARK OF THE TALA tells, but Andi and Rayfe’s story lasted for one novel. I have a lot more to say on this theme.

When I mentioned this to my darling friend, Grace Draven, she replied, “Oh yeah – when I find a book that’s my catnip, the first thing I think is that I never want to read a story along those lines again!” Okay, so she’s a little sarcastic, but I love her and her point is well taken.

The upshot is, I decided to go ahead and write the Sorcerous Moons series. And I have had so much fun!

In the first book, LONEN’S WAR, out next week, we meet Oria, a princess of Bára and a sorceress, facing the assault of the barbarian enemy, the Destrye. And we meet Lonen, prince of the Destrye, on the battlefield.

Yeah – you can smell that marriage of convenience coming, can’t you? But it takes a nice, long time to get there. Something that’s very nearly scratched my itch. Although, now that I’ve written the sequel, ORIA’S GAMBIT, and am starting book three, I’m thinking of some directions I had to discard, feeling that itch to write a different kind of riff on this theme.

What can I say? This kind of thing is my catnip!

What are your favorite marriage of convenience stories?

Lonen's War (Sorcerous Moons – Book 1) by Jeffe Kennedy
An Unquiet Heart
Alone in her tower, Princess Oria has spent too long studying her people’s barbarian enemies, the Destrye—and neglected the search for calm that will control her magic and release her to society. Her restlessness makes meditation hopeless and her fragility renders human companionship unbearable. Oria is near giving up. Then the Destrye attack, and her people’s lives depend on her handling of their prince…

A Fight Without Hope
When the cornered Destrye decided to strike back, Lonen never thought he’d live through the battle, let alone demand justice as a conqueror. And yet he must keep up his guard against the sorceress who speaks for the city. Oria’s people are devious, her claims of ignorance absurd. The frank honesty her eyes promise could be just one more layer of deception.

A Savage Bargain
Fighting for time and trust, Oria and Lonen have one final sacrifice to choose… before an even greater threat consumes them all.

Guest Post by Kristen Reed-The Way of Escape Dream Cast (book tour) + Giveaway

The Way of Escape Dream Cast

Like most authors, I would love to have my latest novel, The Way of Escape, turned into a Hollywood blockbuster with a cast that would make every director in the film industry green with envy. The Way of Escape has two primary groups of characters: human missionaries who get kidnapped by vampires and the fanged fiends themselves. So, I had to come up with a cast that has the right combination of congeniality and ferocity.

Nicole Beharie as Clara Robinson
This Sleepy Hollow actress has really impressed me over the years, and she would be perfect for the protagonist. Since Nicole did such a wonderful job playing Abbie, I have no doubt that she would slay as a character who finds out that she’s half-vampire and is forced to choose between freedom as a vampire and slavery as a mortal.

Henry Cavill as Augustus Damiani
While this superstar has gotten a lot of recent attention for playing Superman in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , it’s his role in The Tudors that originally captured my attention. After seeing him play Charles Brandon, I have full confidence that he can pull off playing the Italian vampire with a growing appreciation for Clara’s integrity despite having a moral compass that rarely points north.

Sebastian Stan as Emmanuel Géroux
I chose the Winter Soldier himself to play the baby-faced coven leader with a penchant for kidnapping and enslaving humans. By playing the charismatic Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger, and the ruthless, brainwashed Winter Soldier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as well as Captain America: Civil War, and he’s proven that he would be flawless as the fiendish French vampire.

Ehrenreich as Connor Davis
Boyish charm with a side of anguish is the name of the game for Texas missionary Connor Davis, and Alden has that in spades. Like the Clara, he too is unwillingly pulled into the vampire world, and I think he would do an amazing job playing this character. He was delightful as Ethan Wate in Beautiful Creatures, and he’d be equally amiable in The Way of Escape.

Blake Lively as Leah Johnson
Leah is one of Clara’s friends who once sought solace from abusive relationships in drugs and alcohol. Like Clara and Connor, she too is snatched up by Emmanuel’s coven during their mission trip to Haiti. I originally became a fan of Blake during her time on Gossip Girl and continued to be impressed by her skills in The Age of Adaline, and I’d love to see her play the vivacious blonde missionary.

Eva Green as Danielle
I chose Eva Green for the vicious vampire vixen primarily because of her roles in Casino Royale and Camelot. She’d be a great addition to the cast as the undead brunette whose pointed remarks and uninhibited feedings truly test Clara’s self-control.

Rachel McAdams as Marie
Regina King herself would be perfect for Marie, the vampire who purchases and proceeds to torment Connor throughout the book. I know from The Notebook that Rachel can pull off the vintage look that Marie loves and from Mean Girls that she has the ability to be quite vicious on the silver screen.

Tom Hiddleston as Grayson
As the vampire who purchases Leah, Grayson also grates on Clara’s nerves during the book and makes her skin crawl on one especially uncomfortable occasion. Considering Tom’s depiction of Loki in Thor, The Avengers, and Thor: The Dark World, he would undoubtedly take this unlikeable vampire and make Grayson into the character that everyone loves to hate. He’s also my favorite actor, so I’d do my book a disservice by not casting him in one of the principal roles.

Excerpt:
“Come in,” a male voice called.

Lisette pushed open the door and gestured for me to enter. I hesitantly tiptoed into the room and jumped slightly much as the other woman had, my heart skipping a beat when she shut the door behind me and left me alone with the two strange men who occupied the large living area.

The first man stood by the fireplace taking a sip from a glass of red wine. Long black curls cascaded down his back and nearly blended in with the expertly tailored tuxedo he wore just as his button down shirt almost disappeared into the pale skin of his neck.

When the man set the glass on the mantle, I finally got a good look at his surprisingly youthful, heart-shaped face as he licked the wine from his Cupid’s bow lips. After he finished savoring his wine, which he barely seemed old enough to drink, he opened his blue eyes and fixed me with an inquisitive yet predatory stare that made me shiver despite the heat coming from the lit fireplace. I suddenly knew how a gazelle felt after capturing the unwanted attention of a cheetah during a stroll across the savannah.

In an attempt to evade his chilly gaze, I gave the second man a once over. He sat in a Queen Anne-style chair that was just a shade whiter than his fair skin. Though his green eyes were trained on me, his stare wasn’t as unsettling as his companion’s had been. I thought that his wavy auburn hair was short until he turned his head to glance at his phone and I saw that he’d just swept his locks away from his face in a low ponytail.

As I took in how the minimalist hairstyle showed off his deep-set eyes, high cheekbones and square jawline, I realized that I would have been attracted the man if I hadn’t been terrified of him.

While he didn’t exude the same threatening aura as his slightly younger companion, I still felt as if I was a fly that he could swat easily and remorselessly at any moment. I hadn’t felt that powerless in over a decade, and I hated the feeling just as much then as I had growing up.

“Bonjour, Clara,” the raven-haired man greeted in a smooth French accent. “My name is Emmanuel Géroux and this is my guest, Augustus Damiani.”

“Hello,” I replied hesitantly.

“I’m sure you’re wondering why I’ve brought you here,” he presumed. “Let me begin by apologizing for the lackluster room you awakened in. I wasn’t quite sure what I should do with you when you first arrived.”

“I’m more concerned about what I’m doing in your house than the quality of the room I woke up in,” I said carefully.

“Why did you bring me here?”

Emmanuel walked over to the wet bar nearby and poured himself another glass of wine as he spoke, his friend’s eyes never leaving me as the conversation continued.

“My men found you lying unconscious near the village of Manonette last night. Apparently a fire broke out at the facility where you were staying, and you passed out after the evacuation.”

When I struggled to recall the events that transpired earlier that night, I vaguely remembered smelling smoke and hearing an alarm blaring. The memory was so indistinct and brief that I’d brushed it off as a dream, but that hazy memory was enough for me to believe that Emmanuel was telling the truth about the fire at Gospel Gateway. However, I should have awakened in a hospital and not on a private island with two men who looked like they’d just gotten home from a night at the opera.

“Is everyone else alright?”

“Yes, no one at the facility was injured in the fire.”

The relief Emmanuel’s news brought gave me a brief respite from my suspicion. Alas, that break didn’t last long.

“Not that I don’t appreciate your help, but why didn’t your men take me to a hospital if I was unconscious? I might have needed treatment for smoke inhalation or burns,” I pressed on. “And who are you that you have people prowling around Gospel Gateway and Manonette at night?”

“The sooner you tell her the whole truth, the better,”

Emmanuel’s Italian counterpart said.

My host nodded and took another less leisurely swig to polish off his wine before giving me a more fleshed out explanation.

“Well, mademoiselle, I am the leader of the vampire coven that resides on this island. I sent the men who found you to Haiti to bring more humans to the island to be our servants. When they discovered you and a few of your missionary friends near Manonette, they took you to fill my open positions,” Emmanuel explained nonchalantly. “One of the first tasks my men complete with new humans is pricking their fingers and tasting their blood to see if they are worthy of being one of our personal attendants. However, when they tasted your blood, they realized that there was more to you than meets the eye. Your blood had the sweetness of life and the bitterness of death, which means that you are half vampire — also known as a dhampir. Since you aren’t fully human, I wanted to give you the opportunity to choose your fate. You can either live with your fellow mortals and toil on my island for the rest of your days or enjoy the luxury and privilege that comes with being a vampire.”

I gaped at Emmanuel in stunned silence as I attempted to process his ridiculous explanation. Although my first instinct should have been to laugh at him and look for hidden cameras, something inside of me told me that he was telling the absolute truth.

While I’d never contemplated the existence of vampires and had only seen them as fictional characters in books and movies, I’d spent enough time in the Bible to know that demons and other nefarious creatures existed. Jesus himself had even cast a legion of demons out of a man and into a herd of two thousand pigs.

If people can be possessed by demons, is the existence of vampires really that far off, I wondered. Either this guy is telling the truth or he’s insane. I can’t decide which one is worse.

“You’re being awfully quiet, Clara,” Emmanuel remarked.

“What are you thinking?”

“I need proof that you’re telling the truth.”

“Then proof you shall get,” he agreed with a smile as he set down his drink.

Emmanuel took a step forward, but I backed away before he could reach me.

“Can you prove it without coming any closer,” I revised.

“Of course.”

The Frenchman stood his ground a few yards away and his blue eyes underwent a frightening transformation. His pupils bled outward as if someone had dropped ink into his eyes until I found myself gawking into two completely black orbs. Once that change was complete, Emmanuel opened his mouth to show that his top canines had extended into a pair of gleaming white fangs. He let out a feral hiss that sent me sprinting for the door, which I quickly realized was locked. I tried to force the door open, but the hair-raising tickle of his breath on my neck paralyzed me as he placed a frigid hand on mine and removed it from the doorknob.

“Don’t be frightened,” he said in a tone that would have sounded reassuring if not for his newly terrifying appearance.

“If I truly wanted to hurt you, you would not be standing here with your pretty neck untouched and your blood still in your veins.”
