Wicked Fire (The Angel Fire Book 2)by Marie Johnston

271 pages
His thoughts are less than angelic around her....

Jagger Hancock is a fearsome warrior for the angelic realm, slaying demons left and right on Earth and protecting the human race. But when a powerful senator is murdered, he’s reduced to acting as a bodyguard for the grieving daughter. Too bad she’s the same female who ruined his one and only chance at happiness.

Felicia Montclaire looks as angelic as the rest of her kind, but she hides her scars well. Yet the male who gave them to her is not just after her again, but seeking conquest over the entire realm too. While her life goes up in flames once more, the last thing she needs is a cranky bodyguard…even if he’s the only one who can keep her alive.

Jagger and Felicia might not survive each other, much less the constant attacks from their enemies. But when danger drives them back to the angelic realm, they’ll discover their past is waiting for them—and it’s far more dangerous than anything on Earth.

Wicked Fire is book 2 in the Angel Fire series, an exciting new paranormal romance series by an award-winning author.

Chapter One
“The team needs me.” Julian Hancock, or Jagger to everyone but his mother, managed not to sound pleading as he addressed his former team leader. Bryant Vale was the warrior director now and less interested in hearing his arguments. “With you off the team and no replacement yet, my place is here.”

Jagger should be in his typical uniform of black tactical pants and a long-sleeved black shirt specially designed to fit around his wings. It seemed sacrilegious to sit in his boss’s office wearing a blue T-shirt and a pair of black athletic shorts. But it was necessary for his latest assignment.

He couldn’t take another day shadowing Felicia fucking Montclaire. She was in some danger he only knew vague details about and she’d demanded him as her bodyguard. Demanded. Like the spoiled priss she was.

Spoiled and superficial and haughty…and strong and gorgeous and willowy. Her legs went for miles and haunted his dreams.

He clenched his jaw and steadied his gaze on his new director. Felicia Montclaire was only an obstacle to what he really wanted. Someday, he’d have his own team to lead and he couldn’t do that stuck among humans, babysitting the aimless daughter of a senator.

A flash of guilt flared. Felicia was still technically a senator’s daughter, but her father had been murdered a couple of months ago. She’d weathered the news well, but then he hadn’t expected her to get weepy or be derailed by her grief. He hadn’t expected her to show any feeling at all. And he’d been right.

His director, Bryant Vale, was as expressionless as a wall. A dark, glaring wall. “I understand your complications with Ms. Montclaire—”

“Forget our history,” Jagger gritted out.

He hated that anyone knew the story between him and the vexing angel he was protecting. Or rather, the lack of a story, the result of Ms. Montclaire not setting the record straight and letting everyone think he was a cheating asshole.

“The team needs me.” He said it as much for himself as to make a point. “If Felicia truly requires protection, then she should stay in the realm, in a designated home, with a designated guard.”

Director Vale’s demeanor had hardened as soon as Jagger had cut him off. Damn. Jagger had meant to use a lighter touch, not charge in like a bull at his first sight of red. “Sit down.”

Jagger took his time selecting the backless seat across from the obnoxiously large mahogany desk. He draped his wings over the edge but couldn’t force them to relax. “Director Vale—”

“Shut it.” You could take the warrior off the team, but you couldn’t soften his personality. Director Vale leaned across the desk, his eyes blazing. “I can’t believe you’re dense enough to think that Felicia is safer here. She can help identify her attacker and lead us to the people behind the conspiracy against this realm. The ones who could tell us just what this conspiracy entails. Have a think on it.”

Jagger refused to drop his gaze, and that was a harder challenge than most when Director Vale was pissed. The scars encompassing half the male’s face didn’t make him easy to look at on most days.

The director wasn’t finished. “Her family’s mansion was burned to the ground by angel fire while over half our team was inside. While my mate was inside. Director Richter—” His gaze cut away. Leo Richter was no longer the director. He’d lost both legs at the knee thanks to the fire and was still recovering. “Felicia can hide among the humans better than in our realm. Numen isn’t safe for her. And do I need to go into the main reason why you shouldn’t be tied to the investigation, why you’re too close to the case?”

Jagger’s teeth should’ve cracked under the pressure of his jaw. His father, James Hancock.

His good-for-nothing, cheating father, who’d risked their entire race by spilling the news of their existence to his human side piece. His father, who’d had several human side pieces, and probably a few angelic ones, while he’d had a committed mate.

His father, who’d had his wings taken, been declared a fallen, and tossed out of the realm forever.

His father, who was working with the creatures of Daemon to take over Numen, the realm where his own son resided. If he were a weaker male, he’d feel like his father had chosen the demons of Daemon not only over the angels of Numen, but over him too. Now the man would work with anyone or anything if it served his agenda. Archmasters, symasters, sylphs—the new “Jameson Haddock” didn’t seem to discriminate.

But then if Jagger had ever meant a damn thing to his father, then perhaps Jameson would still be an esteemed senator of Numen.

Not that his father’s multilayered betrayal affected him.

He kept his voice even. “Our team is two short. Dionna took over as leader, but we no longer have you, and with me tied up…” Literally, if Felicia had her way.

His team was everything to him. Having lost his father so young, and his mother… Well, Chanel Hancock wasn’t known for her nurturing nature. She’d turned twice as cold and ten times harder than marble after what she referred to as “your father’s unfortunate choices.”

“I understand.” Director Vale sat back. “But they aren’t functioning as a traditional warrior team, not until this is over. They—you—are under my personal direction. You’re the only ones I completely trust now.”

The director’s unwavering trust mollified him. For now. He’d grown up getting side-eyed by his peers, as if they wondered when he’d follow in his father’s footsteps. And then he’d weathered the Felicia storm, which had broken the trust of the one most dear to him. Without those experiences, Director Vale’s words wouldn’t have meant as much.

To still have Bryant Vale in his corner after they’d learned his own exiled father was the one behind the trouble in the realm was humbling.

And he needed to make sure he continued to earn it.
Even if he had to deal with the fallout of the maelstrom that Felicia Montclaire brought to his life.

Guest Post: Marie Johnston - Turn up the music! (Ancient Ties book tour) + giveaway

One way to categorize writers is those who listen to music while they work and those who don’t. I fall into the listen category, but it’s not for inspiration.

Being a certain age…I was raised before the mass amounts of parental cautions and warnings hit the market. One advisory that wasn’t around while growing up was the one about limiting screen time. We lived out in the country and the TV was a sort of surrogate babysitter while my parents worked. My brother and I watched way more TV than we “should” have and talk about a lack of censoring. With only one channel, we didn’t have much variety, then came the VCR. The movies I saw as an eleven year old would curdle my blood if I caught my kids watching them. My grandma recorded VHS tapes with HBO shows and we borrowed them, all without my parents screening a thing. The only thing my mom forbade me to watch after we got a satellite and were exposed to a whole new world of viewing was 90210. No angsty teens allowed, not even on TV!

Flash forward to my lab years. The majority of duties in my position as a public health microbiologist was what I called old-school micro. Test tubes, plates, and chemicals. It was awesome. I even had my own room to work in and was often by myself—free rein with my thoughts. Talk about years of coming up with scenes and dialogue way before I put the figurative pen to paper. However, I also did my share of molecular work and I’ve been around long enough to have done molecular before all the automation. It brought a new definition to tedious. No mind wandering allowed and, boy, did I suck. I had to repeat so many steps because if anything messed up my routine, and it was usually my thoughts, I had to start over after a small heart attack. Some patient samples just can’t be recollected easily.

Then…we got a radio in the lab. A lot of the older techs believed in utter silence for maximum concentration. A lot of older techs weren’t raised with TV on constantly. Once I could listen to the radio, I could tie steps of the procedure to parts of a song.

Uh…did I add reagent two last time and this is the extraction step?

Yes, I remember adding the reagent now. Katy Perry was singing about kissing a girl and liking it.

I do better with background noise—but it depends on the noise. If I go into my bedroom where it’s quiet to write, I want to crawl out of skin and go screaming through the house. So, I throw on some headphones and hit up a playlist. When I go to my favorite coffee shop (favorite because they have cushy booths!), I toss in headphones. Especially if people are around. Not because I don’t like people, but so many writers are introverts and what do introverts do? Observe people more than engage them. I should put eavesdropping down when I list hobbies. If there’s a table of people next to me, my ears are tuning in. A writer’s gotta research after all.

Born to be Guardians…

Chayton Eagle comes from a strong line of wolf shifters, his father an ancient in their pack. Chayton proudly acts as a Guardian, defending the colonies from danger—both from outsiders and from threats inside the pack. The one thing he doesn’t need is a human-raised female on his team—especially not one who passes out each time she shifts! Never mind that she was trained by elite Guardians, Chayton doesn’t need the distraction of a tall, sexy-as-hell redhead when he’s working. He has to focus. And he has to remember he’s scheduled to take the blood oath with a female, a long-ago pairing arranged by her parents. It doesn’t matter he and Kaitlyn are fated mates.

She can’t be his. Not now. Not ever.

Destined to be Mates.

Kaitlyn Savoy knows Chayton is supposed to be her mate. Too bad he’s such an ass about her human upbringing making her weak. Too bad she’s been assigned as his partner to take down the feral shifters threatening one of the colonies. Too bad she’s so damn attracted to him. As the mission continues, Chayton is captured by the ferals, and Kaitlyn proves her worth as a Guardian. During the rescue, she uncovers the secrets of her past, secrets that will affect her future. Despite his best efforts, Chayton’s opinion of her begins to change, his respect growing—along with feelings he can’t deny. She’s become part of his life, part of his heart. A fact his soon-to-be inlaws notice—and they intend to put an end to the temptation Kaitlyn poses to Chayton.

No matter what.

Excerpt:
Chayton stormed to his cabin.

A four hour drive. With Kaitlyn.

Spending the night. With Kaitlyn.

Roaming the woods. With Kaitlyn.

His heart pounded, his nostrils flared, and he huffed like a bear after a marathon. Slamming his front door open, he charged through and kicked it shut behind him.

Only then did he double over, hands on his knees, sagging to catch his breath.

Kaitlyn Savoy.

The sexiest thing he’d ever laid eyes on.

The shifter he was never supposed to meet. His mate.

And she was oblivious to it.

He stomped through his cabin. Her lack of mating insight was for the best. If he had his pick of shifters, she’d be the last on the list. Besides, he was promised to another. Kaitlyn was young yet, and based on her blasé to distasteful reaction to him, she’d have no trouble moving on. Or not. Her sanity may last longer than most who don’t anchor their souls with a mate. But if she needed to bond, she wouldn’t have a problem finding someone. Like that bartender at Pale Moonlight.

His fangs bared and a growl escaped before he stopped himself. He’d never caught her with him, but stories had it the bartender helped her assuage the physical needs shifters of their caliber experienced. She hadn’t been with the guy since Chayton had been around. That decision had increased the bartender’s life expectancy considerably.

No. No. It shouldn’t matter. She needed to move on and he had no say with who. Chayton straightened and wiped his brow, which had dotted with sweat. It was always an effort to contain his reaction around that female.

Why her?

Ancient blood—pure, undiluted shifter blood—ran through his veins, thanks to his father. His Sioux mother would roll over in her grave. Chayton’s bloodlines were rich with history and honor.

The female he’d sworn himself to, Tika, would make a lovely mate instead. Soft brown eyes, feminine curves, and ancestry as strong as his. In fact, she was coming of age soon. For him, that was twenty-five. Her parents had pushed for their union when she turned eighteen, but that had seemed too pervy for him. At two-hundred and twenty-nine, he wasn’t about to jump a girl the second she was legal. If it was up to him, he’d wait even longer, but even Tika had pushed for their binding.

His stomach rumbled, alerting him that he’d missed dinner. Not that he’d eat at the main lodge anyway; it was a tactic he used to avoid Kaitlyn.

Excerpt:
Involuntarily, she shivered. That voice! His smell! Coupled with his looks—he was dangerous on so many levels.

She flashed again, two more miles up the trail. Her logical mind informed her that he’d followed her twice already. She hadn’t even known it was possible.

He appeared in front of her, an eyebrow arched. “Did you have something to do with the humans’ deaths?”

At the mention of her parents, she went wild.

For all the good it did.

She punched, she kicked, she kneed. All easily deflected. He clasped her arms to pull her toward him and spin her around. Both of her legs pumped and flailed, trying to kick back into his shins or loosen his grip, but he restrained her like it was something he did every day.

From his domineering presence and grim demeanor, maybe he did.

He jolted her so hard her teeth clattered. It stunned her into momentary stillness. When she tensed to start all over again, he repeated the movement—harder. Her breath whooshed out like she’d been heimliched.

She struggled to inhale against his vice-like grip. He was an immobile wall at her back. Humiliatingly enough, she wanted to seek comfort in that wall.

Tears pricked her eyes. She sniffled.

His grip loosened, then tightened again. “Don’t think that’ll work on me,” he sneered into her ear.

The dam broke and sob after sob escaped her.

Jeanie G.'s Review
Getting 4 "bonding" sheep
Clever story-line and graphic love scenes abound in the book. The first half is setting the scene for the "changing of the guard" within the Vampire race. The Old Guard (Vampire Council) found themselves fearful of declining strength and power so they decided to try and integrate "dark magic" and demons into their fold. Folly to think they could control the demons they summoned to bond with their offspring. The demons were more than willing to "comply" knowing that once they had unlimited access to the mortal world, they could have free reign to control all super's and mortals.

Demetrius (an offspring of a prominent Vampire Council family) took issue with suspicious activities and, along with a few others, banished the Old Council and is still in the process of investigating dark happenings within the vampire structure. He is trying to create a governing body (Trispecies Synod) that includes shifters, vampires and hybrids to maintain a peaceful coexistence and combine guardian responsibilities. Along comes Callista , also an offspring of one Old guard family, who is seeking assistance from Demetrius to determine if her father has been possessed by a demon. Having no where else to turn, she makes the sacrifice to work with the one person she thinks is responsible for her family's loss of wealth and position. Her mother disappeared when she was 8 years old and she has spent the last 16 + years trying to please and help her father survive with little or no status or income. She blames Demetrius.

On their initial meeting there was immediate attraction (of course) for Demetrius and Callista but unknown events in the past create a barrier for them to pursue what looks to be a "true mate" situation. You see, Callista's mother bound her to a demon when she was just a child, and with only a few weeks until her 25th birthday the are on a short countdown to loosing each other and possibly allowing a portal into the mortal realm for the demons.

I bought into the book immediately. Enjoying the Alpha male role of Demetrius and the almost naive role of Callista, I knew that fireworks were coming in both the "control" department and the "sex" department. Although it seemed like Callista was somewhat subservient to her father in the beginning, she is no ones fool. She takes up the mantle and proves to be a worthy addition to the new guard and her new mate.

Just an alert...the graphic sex scenes are more than mere fireworks, they are more like a hydrogen bomb exploded. If that's not your style then just skip about 4-5 chapters and you will still be good to go for the rest of the story. I am excited to read the next installment on Roark (Demetrius' good friend and vampire guard). I always look forward to seeing a unemotional, stalwart alpha male get taken to his knees by some sassy female! Don't know if that's what will happen but I can dream. Ha. I think this book has great merit even without the love scenes. I like the story and know that more of the New Guard antics are on the horizon!

Bianca Greenwood's Review
3 ½ sheep
Leader of the vampire political revolution, Demetrius Deveraux has a tall task; create harmony and cohesion among the world’s supernaturals as well as protect mankind from the threat of demonic invasion. Callista Augustus, part of the tarnished, overthrown vampire aristocracy, would rather eat dirt than consort with Deveraux, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Reluctantly, Calli seeks Devereux’s help to save her father and herself from certain doom. And so, the old pattern of simmering hate swiftly turning to smouldering lust ensues.

Demetrius is written in a style similar to JR Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series; lots of over-serious muscle-bound cool dudes, political intrigue, ass kicking, and vividly descriptive sex. It’s a formula, but it’s a formula that works. Demetrius has a few female power players on his team. I appreciated that touch. Johnston has also laid the groundwork for future installments by teasing storylines for other team members. I’ll likely pick up book two. Like BDB, Demetrius is an entertaining and satisfying for the most part. I read it quickly and enjoyed the experience, but if you’re looking for something original, keep looking.

TammyK's Review
4 Secret Sheep
Cali’s father is in trouble, of the pure evil kind. Cali has no one to turn to for help except the one man who destroyed her family Demetrius Devereux. Demetrius overthrew the vampire government practically kicking her then once Powerful father to the curb. Betraying her father by turning him in could not be helped it was the only way to save him but who is going to save her from the arrogant Demetrius. As they start to work together they discover past lies and secrets are at play that puts Cali right at the center that threatens her life. Demetrius is a doing what he can to save Cali and take down the underlying evil; however, along the way he realizes if he loses Cali he will lose everything but how can that be when Cali is not his true mate, all the signs are not there?

Cali was portrayed as an innocent heroine who was sheltered by her father all these years however when time came to step up to the plate she had no problem adjusting, taking action and even putting Demetrius in his place when needed. Demetrius may have had the bad boy Alpha male stigma but bad boy deep inside he truly was not. He was an Alpha that actually did care and only those closest to him knew that about him, which is why the people around him were absolutely loyal to him. The story, to me, was about secrets, everyone has them but to what extent, to protect, for greed, for power? When all these secretes come to head will Demetrius and Cali prevail, will it let evil take over? Does love concur all?

All in all I enjoyed the story. It was a light fun paranormal romance with plenty of action, deep rooted love whether it was romance, family or friends.

Excerpt:
Well, I’m here,” he barked and marched toward the door of his chamber. It irritated him, the immediate effect she had.

He passed Betty and caught her censuring glare. Asserting herself to Demetrius was nothing new. To an old battle axe like Betty, he was still a snot-nosed youngling with holes in his britches. This look was different. It dawned on him that she might know Callista Augustus after having served the family of a council member for centuries.

He’d saved Betty’s ass, given her shelter and a job, and yet this young blonde stomped into his office and commanded his assistant’s respect over him?

Curbing any gentlemanly skills at the threshold, he entered his office and didn’t bother holding the door for her. He sat behind his desk, reclining back in his chair. She waited with her arms crossed across from him. Betty had already shut the door.

Well, damn. He was going to snap at Miss Augustus to close it, take out some of his aggression, show her who was in charge.

“Callista Augustus.”

“Demetrius Devereux.” Her voice was as fine as she was.

He decided to switch tactics. “You have me. Alone. Whatever do you need,” he purred, eyeing her up and down.

It should’ve been part of the act, but his eyes seemed to take great pleasure perusing her curves. Her clothing was quality, but worn. She wore faded black leggings with knee-high boots that had seen better days. The pale yellow cardigan she wore over a mulberry top complimented the stunning color of her eyes.

Those eyes were narrowed on him.
