Genre: Sci-Fi Romance/ Alien Romance
Stranded alien. Fierce farmer. One blown-up barn.

Ellen’s barely keeping her family farm afloat, clinging to dreams of what it could be—with a little luck and a lot of hard work. What she doesn’t need is a spaceship crashing onto her land, or the massive scaled alien who steps out of the wreckage. Now the barn she wanted to convert to a bed and breakfast is shattered all over the lawn, and this huge scaly dude is to blame.

Elia is a space-faring clone, bred for loyalty and survival. He fought for the chance to enter the prestigious Mating Games, only to be exiled for a crime he didn’t commit. Now, stranded on an uncharted world, he and his crew are at the mercy of an infuriated human female with fire in her eyes and no warriors of her own to protect her.

She is not fragile. But she is vulnerable. And something deep in Elia wants her. All he has to do is rebuild what he destroyed and guard her land and her dreams as fiercely as if they were his own.

But Ellen isn’t looking for a mate. And Elia is running out of time to prove that she should.

Excerpt: Heartless: Interstellar Brides® Program: Primal Mates Book 1 by Grace Goodwin + giveaway

Heartless: A Sci-Fi Alien Romance Novel (Interstellar Brides® Program: Primal Mates Book 1)

by Grace Goodwin
June 27th 2023
Genres: Adult, Romance, Science Fiction
Warrior. Doctor. Spy. I am Commander Helion, a heartless terror, relentless and unforgiving. Merciless.

My destiny is not to claim a female, to have a family, to be rendered helpless by love.

Despite this, I am matched. A beautiful human female is now mine. Despite my warnings, she is determined to leave her mark on me, body and soul.

Honor demands I resist. I tell her the truth. I will not place a mating collar around her neck. I cannot protect her—especially from me—my choices—the horrors I face every day.

Just one moment of weakness and she gets under my skin, makes me want things I cannot have. She is everything I am not—and the most dangerous creature I have ever faced.

Claiming her—keeping her—is not possible with my pivotal role in this never-ending war. There is no place in my duties for desire. For need. Too many innocents count on me for protection. Too many lives are at stake, including hers.

The enemy is always ready and waiting, but I never expected her to be among them.

For the first time in my hardened life, I question my sanity. My dark soul. I begin to understand exactly what my enemies have stolen from me—and realize there is no limit to what a heartless warrior will sacrifice for love.

Excerpt:
Oh, heck yes. I was ready for lots of mind-blowing private time with two hot mates. Sooooo, ready. My body had been willing for a while. My mind had taken its sweet time catching up.

Now every part of me was fully on board. Heart. Mind. Body. Two mates? So very, very naughty. I squirmed, just a bit. I couldn’t keep the restless need from escaping. I hadn’t been touched by a man in so long. I tried to recall the last time—before the—before that. I couldn’t remember clearly, but I was pretty sure it had been years.

“The transport window is closing, my lady. If we wait much longer, I will need to delay your departure.” The Prillon warrior in control of the transport pad interrupted our long goodbye.

“Of course. So sorry.” I gave Makayla one final, super-tight hug, and walked up the few stairs to join my soon-to-be transported suitcase so we could be flung across the galaxy.

The officer nodded, his large hands moving competently over the controls.

Would my mates touch me with that level of intense concentration?

Were their hands that big? That skilled?

What was wrong with me? I was thinking like a horny teenager.

“Are you ready, my lady?” The transport officer had kind eyes. He knew where I was going. And why. I nodded. The hum of the transport pad rose up from the floor like an electricity bath. The extra energy building up for my jump through space made me squirm like a shelter puppy about to be released from its cage. Finally free.

Oh, yes. I was ready to meet my new mate.

Commander Zarren Helion.

Even his name sounded formidable.

I just knew he was going to be one hundred percent perfect.

***

Commander Zarren Helion, Intelligence Core, Black Fleet, Sector 438

The Prillon warrior sitting before me bled from multiple wounds, none fatal, each strategically placed to inflict maximum pain. Lieutenant Oberan Arcas of Prillon Prime. I have to break him.

Interview: YA PNR Author: Robert Joncas + giveaway

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
I have always read books since I was a kid. I knew that eventually I would write a novel.

What is something unique/quirky about you?
I have always believed in reincarnation. Even as a kid, I could not relate to other children my age. I have always felt like an old soul.

What are some of your pet peeves?
People that need a lot of attention. I am never bored; I always have something to do or somewhere to go.

Where were you born/grew up at?
I was born in Colchester, England and grew up in Southern California. It was nice to be able to go from the mountains to the beach in one weekend. I also liked the mild weather.

Who is your hero and why?
I don't really have one person as a hero. I admire people that struggle to succeed. It's easy to give up.

What kind of world ruler would you be?
Compassionate.

What are you passionate about these days?
My work and writing. I am a Real Estate Broker and sell mostly second home mountain resort properties. Lots of people in Phoenix want to get out of the heat in the summer. I sell to a lot of teachers and retired folk. I enjoy what I do.

What do you do to unwind and relax?
I did a lot of skiing and backpacking. Now I'm getting older I enjoy traveling and writing. I spent the last few years during COVID finishing my novel.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less!
Stress free, laid back.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I had a short story published a few years ago in an anthology of International Writers. It was about a girl that bought an old muffin pan at a thrift store and the muffins she baked in it killed people.

Do you have a favorite movie?
I would have to say "Silence of the Lambs" is one of my top 10.

Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?
Haha! I only have one out. Changing Tide would make a great movie. Also, it wouldn't break the bank to cast it.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?
I guess it would have to be an alien. One of the greys, like in my book.

Dive into this fast-paced, suspenseful Sci-Fi fantasy novel that melds sizzling romance, action, heart-stopping horror, and a high-stakes battle to save humanity.

Changing Tide

Genre: YA SciFi Paranormal Romance, Fantasy, Horror
I had to do it.

I wouldn't let anyone else I love die.

What did I do ...

A wild adventure that takes you on a journey from the California coast to the depths of the Grand Canyon. Dive into this fast-paced, suspenseful Sci-Fi fantasy novel that melds sizzling romance, action, heart-stopping horror, and a high-stakes battle to save humanity.

After her father's tragic death, eighteen-year-old Skye Conner and her mom visit her Nana on the California coast. There, Skye stumbles across a mystical conch shell in the surf. Suddenly her dull, empty life takes on a thrilling and terrifying turn.

Skye has had to endure a despondent mother drowning in grief, living in a private world of darkness. Nana is a feisty, intelligent, take-no-bull grandmother with a flaming sense of pride and heart of gold. Then comes a handsome, mesmerizing alien on a mission to save the Earth. But are his intentions sincere, or does he have another agenda?

Skye has finally found someone to love, but can he be trusted? Changing Tide is a witty, original page-turning thriller that will make you look at First Contact in a whole new way.

--snippet of a review from OnlineBookClub.org--
“Robert Joncas has crafted a compelling narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. The pacing is well-balanced, and the author's ability to evoke a wide range of emotions is commendable. Skye's character development is particularly noteworthy, as readers witness her transformation from a grieving and vulnerable girl into a brave and determined young woman.

....Changing Tide is a remarkable book that grabs the reader's attention from the very first page. With its compelling characters, intriguing plot twists, and seamless blending of genres, it is a true page-turner. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment spent reading this book and was genuinely sad when it came to an end. Without a doubt, I highly recommend picking up Changing Tide by Robert Joncas and awarding it a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars.

--snippet of a Review from Literary Titan--
In “Changing Tide,” Robert Joncas masterfully entwines an evocative narrative of a young girl, Skye, wrestling with her personal turmoil while being swept into a journey far beyond her understanding. Haunted by cryptic dreams and grappling with the tragic loss of her father and her mother’s spiraling depression, Skye’s world is painted with a brush of melancholy. However, a glimmer of hope emerges as she rekindles a connection with Paul, an alluring figure from her past, previously known for his childhood mischief.

Robert Joncas showcases an exceptional ability to portray raw emotions and delicate sentiments. His narrative is an intricate tapestry of romance, familial bonds, suspense, and an unmistakably human touch enveloped in a mantle of science fiction. The characters are vividly constructed, each contributing a unique hue to the narrative palette. Nana, Skye’s vivacious and fearless grandmother, was a particular standout, embodying a captivating blend of loyalty and audacious spirit.

The narrative is particularly successful in illustrating Skye’s internal struggle – her battle against emotional turmoil and her hesitant forays into new friendships. The character development of the alien entity is equally commendable, with its adaptation and backstory revealed in a layered, compelling manner.

“Changing Tide” is a warmly recommended read, particularly for young adults who yearn for a slice of relatable, yet enchantingly fantastic, reality. This novel embodies the essence of heartfelt storytelling interlaced with an adventurous spirit, ensuring a riveting reading experience.
Chapter I
First Contact
I never thought anyone close to me would die. I know it seems unrealistic because, sooner or later, we all die. But dying is supposed to happen in the future, like getting old. When you're eighteen, you shouldn't have to think about death. The idea of death takes you to a dark place where no one young ever wants to be.

It was the second week of June, and the first faint evidence of dawn trickled into the room. I pulled the curtain back, and fog blanketed the beach, darkening my mood. But then, a peculiar light shone from the shoreline in the distance, casting an eerie glow, like a beacon, in the mist.

I pulled a pink tee shirt from the closet and grabbed a pair of shorts from the pine dresser. Finally, I jerked a purple hoodie over my head, slipped on my flip-flops, and ran outside.

The strange light in the distance glowed like a full moon on a cloudy night. I crossed the beach and drifted in that direction. The long lines of white waves that swept across the shore glowed with a warm, radiant light. I kicked off my sandals at the shoreline, treading barefoot in the cold surf. Shivering, I clutched the sweatshirt tight around my neck. The ocean swirled around my ankles. I felt tiny shells and bits of seaweed in the ribbed sand under my feet.

Last week, after my high school graduation, Mom and I had flown from Phoenix to Nana's house in Crescent Cove, a small tourist town on the California coast. It was a two-hour flight from Phoenix to Sacramento, then another forty-five minutes in a small plane to the nearest airport. It would have been almost ten hours in the car had we driven. Unfortunately, Mom was in no condition to help me drive, so Nana said she would pick us up at the airport.

By the time we picked up our luggage, Nana was waiting outside the terminal in her old VW van. The trip was hard on Mom. Dark circles of exhaustion were under her eyes, and her hair hung in matted strings against her pale cheeks. She collapsed into the front seat while Nana helped me load the baggage into the back of the van.

When we drove up to the house, I knew it right away, even though it had been five years since I'd last been there. The red shutters and gray wood shingle siding looked the same as I remembered. I knew the inside would smell of lemon polish, and everything would be spotless and scrubbed.

Without seeing it, I knew the old back deck would be the same: weathered but sturdy and always covered in sand. I could picture Dad grilling and sipping beer while Mom and I watched the waves crash on the shore. I had hoped coming here would be a distraction, but memories of Dad continued to flood my mind.

My stomach ached as I remembered the heavy black dress I wore to Dad's funeral on that scorching day in Phoenix. The air was sizzling, too hot. I'd had to take deep breaths to keep from passing out. Although a canopy shaded the gravesite, the temperature was over 100 degrees. I ached with grief that I couldn't at least see Dad one last time — to make sure it was really him who'd died in that horrible accident. The burning car wreck left his body unidentifiable. The funeral home cremated what was left of his remains.

As I followed the light through the surf, the sea surged with a rolling wave that knocked me over. It was as if something had stirred below the ocean and was rising from the deep. I threw my hands out to break my fall but landed in the shallows on my butt. I sat motionless in the surf, shivering in my wet clothes…

Book Review: Yuletide Invasion: A Holiday Horror Novella By J. C. Moore

Yuletide Invasion: A Holiday Horror Novella
By J. C. Moore
November 6, 2022
Publisher: MissingStarBooks
ASIN: B0BLMKPJ92
ISBN: 9798218096120
Christmas Eve. 1986.
A blizzard pounds upstate New York. The wind moans and the never stopping snow...and lood...pile up.
The weather forces strangers from different walks of life to shelter from the storm as a monstrous creature crashes their festivities. The being inhabits the bodies of the slain like a malicious virus.
This isn't a night for Santa and children's smiles as evil delivers a whole new meaning to a "night before Christmas!"

A grandmother tells her granddaughter a true story about Christmas Eve in Upstate New York in 1986. Some people in a diner and a convenience store next to it are stuck in a blizzard. With the blizzard came something else: an alien invasion.

I like to find Christmas books to read for the month of December, other than the story of Scrooge and the three ghosts that visit him or a sappy love story. When I saw this novella released, it reminded me of War of the Worlds by HG Wells and of course, two 80s alien invasion movies, Attack of the Killer Klowns and The Thing (John Carpenter’s version, as it was close to the story, Who Goes There? by John Campbell-redone as a novella, Frozen Hell.) Anyway, this novella mixes something like The Thing with Christmas. I enjoyed it.

If you want to read something Christmassy, that is not about Scrooge or the baby Jesus, or people falling in love, and if scary ghost stories and/or alien stories are your thing, this might be the read you want.

I gave Yuletide Invasion: A Holiday Horror Novella 4 “Scary Christmas” sheep.

Mirage (Web Shifter's Library #2) by Julie E. Czerneda

by Julie E. Czerneda
August 11, 2020
432 pages
Publisher: DAW (August 11, 2020)
Book 2 of 3 in the Web Shifter's Library Series
The second book in the Web Shifter's Library series returns to the adventures of Esen, a shapeshifting alien who must navigate the perils of a hostile universe.

Relationships get complicated when you don’t know who—or what—you really are. Esen must find a way to rescue a hapless group of chimeras, beings who are a new and unique blend of species she knows, when she can’t become one herself. When Evan Gooseberry tries to help, he is shattered to learn he himself isn’t entirely Human and begins to suspect his new friend Esen isn’t what she seems.

Complicating matters, a mysterious contagion has killed the crew of the ship that brought the chimeras—and Evan—to Botharis. Everyone’s been quarantined inside the All Species’ Library of Linguistics and Culture, including over a hundred disgruntled alien scholars.

The risks climb as Skalet and Lionel continue their quest to solve the disappearance of Paul’s mother’s ship, the Sidereal Pathfinder, only to find themselves caught in a tangle of loyalties as Skalet is betrayed by her own Kraal affiliates, who infiltrate the Library.

All of which would be quite enough for one Web-being’s day, but Paul Ragem hopes to rekindle the romance of his first love. A shame Esen hasn’t told him who’s hiding in their greenhouse.

"As always, there are plenty of oddball alien hijinks, misunderstandings, and intrigues, all illustrating how badly the library is needed while providing excellent entertainment."—Locus

"Search Image had one of my favorite settings so far (an all-inclusive alien library), and an abundance of interesting aliens. Czerneda’s worldbuilding and attention to biological detail is amazing, and something I always look forward to in her books." —The Obsessive Bookseller

Book Review: Captive (The Survival Race Book 1) by K.M. Fawcett

Captive (The Survival Race Book 1)
by K.M. Fawcett
January 12, 2020
404 pages
Rookie cop Addy Dawson must escape her alien captors. Caged with a brazen alpha gladiator claiming to be her mate, Addy refuses to breed warriors for the Survival Race—a blood sport where the last man alive wins. Nothing and no one will stop her from finding a way home, including the exasperating rogue determined to seduce her.

Years of killing for entertainment have turned Max into a hardened beast. The only time he feels human is when at stud. But when a fiery woman from his home world rejects him, her rebellious spirit awakens a part of his soul he thought long dead.

Bound together by a desire for freedom, Addy and Max will risk torture or worse to break out. But the hunted pair will never find refuge unless they can learn to trust each other with their lives…and their hearts.

"Fawcett delivers a suspenseful and captivating science fiction romance. A must read for all, but especially for fans of THE HUNGER GAMES." --Caridad Pineiro, NY Times & USA Today bestselling author

This enemies-to-lovers Sci-Fi Romance is a stand alone story that is part of a series. No cliff hangers.

Captive sounded like something that was up my alley until I actually started reading it. There was huge potential for this book but in the end, too many obstacles to overcome.

The story is about Addy Dawson who is caught in the middle of a forest fire only to blackout and wake up on an alien planet, in a cell, without her clothes, and next to a warrior who claims to be her mate. Max is a gladiator forced to breed and produce winning offspring to participate in the Survival Race, a deadly blood sport for the amusement of his captors. Max and Addy are pushed to the limit and decide to risk it all to escape.

First things first, while Captive may not seem long at around 384 pages, it feels long and drawn out. The beginning was great with the way the whole plot started to unfold and the initial meeting between Max and Addy but there’s just too much going on in this book that bogged down the flow and pacing. As if escaping bloodthirsty aliens wasn’t enough of a complication, the author decided to complicate matters even further by giving Max and Addy an additional person to care for. I’m trying not to spoil things but I feel the addition of this other person wasn’t necessary so early on in the plot and I think it messed up the reading experience for me on some level because I couldn’t buy into Max and Addy as a couple.

And Addy, I just couldn’t like her. For me, she wasn’t “alive” enough as a character to warrant all the attention she got from Max. To me, she was arm candy designed to make Max look like a hero and didn’t have much of anything to offer when she wasn’t with Max. To me, these two weren’t a couple because they fell in love but because they were forced together by the circumstances and just decided to accept it.

Captive could have been something entertaining to add to the Space Romance sub-genre but it fell really flat for me and it took me a while to get through it. There’s a bit of a plot hole with regards to the alien captors and communication with their captives. Overall, this book wasn’t for me at all.

Excerpt: Mated to the Alien Series by Kate Rudolph + giveaway

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Braxtyn?
Braxtyn features Braxtyn NaZade and Vita Minnick. Brax first appeared in his brother’s book, Shayn, alongside his twin brother, Dekon. He’s a half-Detyen, half-Oscavian mechanic who just wants to be an artist. Cinnamon roll? Maybe, I’ll let you be the judge. And he gets into a bit of trouble when a mysterious stranger abducts him from his new home on Earth.

That mysterious stranger? Vita. She was sold into slavery as a child and is now free and working as a bounty hunter. She’s tough, she can take care of herself, and she doesn’t know what to do with a man who treats her like she’s precious. I love her.

They don’t make sense at first, but the Denya Bond knows what’s up. They’re fated to be together… as long as Vita’s enemies don’t destroy them first.

Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?
In terms of marketability, I think my Alien Outlaws series would be the best to translate to a movie or TV show. It has an ensemble cast, a rollicking sci-fi plot, and some twists and turns. It would be awesome to see any of my stories on the big screen, though, so Hollywood, really, I’m right here! Come calling!

How long have you been writing?
I’ve probably been writing since middle school, and I’ve been telling stories my entire life. I know for a fact that my (now defunct) fanfiction.net account goes back to 2002, so I’ve been around on the internet for a good few years. But it took me a very long time to actually finish anything. I started writing a few novellas and short stories in 2013/2014 and they were the first things I ever finished. And just that process of finishing something really jumpstarted the rest of my career. Once it was possible to have a complete story, even if it was only 5000 words, it suddenly seemed possible to get a whole novel completed… someday. And that someday was 2016, when I completed Bear in Mind which was my first novel length story. And now I am able to write multiple novels in a year. Practice really does make things easier.

What is something unique/quirky about you?
I am a roller derby skater! I first started roller skating when I was a little kid since my aunt owned a roller skating rink. In fact, my parents met at that roller rink, so skating might just be in my DNA. Then about nine years ago I saw a flyer for a new team that was recruiting skaters. So for the past several years, on and off depending on where I was living, I’ve been skating roller derby. It’s fun, and a bit frightening, and if you have any inclination to find a sport full of awesome people, I’d suggest giving it a try.

Do you see writing as a career?
Writing is my career. I was fortunate enough to be able to transition to writing full time in 2017 and I hope I am able to continue to do so. I try and write every week day and I’m always looking for new ways to work on my books and get them into hands of readers. But it’s not just writing that is a career, it’s publishing in general. It’s producing different kinds of books, getting them into formats like audio and print, keeping in touch with readers, and learning how to be an entire marketing team all as one person. It’s tough, but I get to do all of it while wearing pajamas, which is a pretty nifty trade off.

What made you want to become an author and do you feel it was the right decision?
I didn’t really like to read until middle school. At the time if felt like that was SOOOOOOO late in my life, but now, looking back, I was about twelve? But my best friend was a reader, and school always encouraged us to read, and until seventh grade I just didn’t like it. And in seventh grade I figured out why.

The books people gave me sucked.

Okay, maybe that’s not fair, but they didn’t appeal to me. And then we read The Westing Game in middle school and it’s the first school assigned book I remember loving. And, weirdly, one of the few I actually liked. And yet I was an English major in college. I never said I made any sense.

But along with The Westing Game I somehow stumbled across The Vampire Diaries by LJ Smith (more than a decade before anyone would have thought to make a TV show) and Anne Rice. And that was it. I love love love genre fiction and that’s how I finally started to love reading.

And it’s because of those books that I knew I wanted to write. I started out with fanfiction, mainly of Harry Potter, and then moved on to trying to finish my own stories. It took a long time. Every January I’d make a promise: this is the year I’m finally going to finish my novel. And it was a different novel every year. And by December I’d have a few thousand words and no hope. It wasn’t until about 2013 that I was able to finish any original fiction, and I started publishing in 2015. This year marks my five year anniversary and it was absolutely the right decision to make. I’ve grown as a writer and learned so much over the past few years and I can’t wait to see what the next five years brings.

What do you think about the current publishing market?
The current publishing market is both terrifying and exhilarating. The last decade has seen an explosion in opportunities for authors to make a living, or at least pay some bills, telling the kinds of stories that didn’t used to be published. But there is A LOT that a person has to learn to do it successfully. And there are people out there who will take advantage of the unknowing, those who will ask for a lot of money to teach things that are readily available online for free. And those that will take thousands of dollars to publish an author’s book when she could do it herself for much less. So if you’re looking to publish, make sure you do your research. It’s scary, but it’s also fun.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?
I’ll confess, my writing method is pretty boring. I sit down and plot out the main structure of what I’m going to write, going chapter by chapter and doing a sentence or two. They’ll read like “Vita kidnaps Brax” or “Sexy times.” I also usually do character sheets with basic information: age, physical description, important history, etc. Then I start at chapter one and go through to the end. And I usually only write one book at a time, though sometimes I’ll work on other projects to make sure I don’t get bored. So sometimes I’ll work on my main story in the morning and then do a short amount of work on a different story in the afternoon just to stretch some different creative muscles.

Excerpt:
The space was another thing that was taking some getting used to. They’d lived on Honora Station for so long that he’d forgotten what it felt like to be able to stretch his arms without risk of running into a wall or smacking someone else.
“Ow,” hissed Deke.
Okay, the smacking someone else was still a bit of a problem, but Deke was his twin so that didn’t count. “Watch where you’re going,” he shot back.

Absolutely not.

Steamy sex, some violence, and edge of your seat suspense!

No cliffhanger.

Captured and Claimed by Jude Gray takes human trafficking to a whole new level; Briony has been abducted from Earth and forced into slavery by an evil alien overlord.
