Genre: YA Dystopian
FLARE ABOVE, MAZE BELOW.
Sadina and the islanders are up against both man and nature as they navigate their way to Alaska. There, they hope to meet the mysterious Godhead, unsure of what separates myth from truth. But the Godhead, now led by Alexandra, is fractured. Within the cracks of their sacred trinity, secrets are revealed that blur the lines of good and evil forever. After a devastating discovery, Isaac and Sadina are forced to split up. Minho holds the rest of the group together, but it’s his beliefs that are slowly falling apart. What once drove Minho to join his sworn enemies is causing him to question everything. When Sadina finds a clue in The Book of Newt, her mission to meet the Godhead becomes even stronger. Isaac and Old Man Frypan come across an enigmatic traveler and learn that the cure isn’t what it once was. They are shaken to the core when they realize that the immunes aren’t as immune as they should be, and the world as a whole is evolving in a dangerous new direction. In Alaska, The Godhead and the sacred site of the Maze face something that no generation of Pilgrims before them has ever witnessed. Beliefs will change, futures will be rewritten, and not even the Godhead knows what will happen next.

The Maze Cutter
by James Dashner
Expected Publication Date: November 15th, 2022
Genre: YA Dystopian/ Teens
Publisher: Akashic Media Enterprises
Seventy-three years after the events of THE DEATH CURE, when Thomas and other immunes were sent to an island to survive the Flare-triggered apocalypse, their descendants have thrived. Sadina, Isaac, and Jackie all learned about the unkind history of the Gladers from The Book of Newt and tall tales from Old Man Frypan, but when a rusty old boat shows up one day with a woman bearing dark news of the mainland–everything changes. The group and their islander friends are forced to embark back to civilization where they find Cranks have evolved into a more violent, intelligent version of themselves. The islanders are hunted by the Godhead, the Remnant Nation, and scientists with secret agendas. When they cross paths with an orphan named Minho from the Remnant Nation, the dangers become real and they don’t know who they can trust. The islanders will have to survive long enough to figure out why they are being targeted, who is friend or foe, and what the Godhead has planned for the future of humanity.

When I first heard about The Maze Cutter, I was both excited and nervous. The Maze Runner has been my longtime favorite series, and while I loved the story back when I read it back in 2014, I was initially concerned this book would now fall outside of my interests. Sometimes more isn’t always better. However, I was pleasantly surprised with this newest edition to the series, and while I haven’t yet read Dashner’s The Crank Palace, it has certainly moved up on my priority list after reading The Maze Cutter. Dashner’s diction and writing style, in my opinion, has changed quite a bit from the original books, but in a good way. It feels a lot more mature while still fitting into the “Young Adult” category. You can really tell The Maze Cutter was written with older fans in mind, as Dashner includes some great nods and references to the original series, even bringing back and incorporating a beloved character into this new story.

The whole “children of the original heroes” trope can be tricky to pull off and in my opinion, often feels cheap and underwhelming. Though I firmly believe Dashner does an amazing job of providing these new characters with their own fresh storyline and complex world while still paying respect to the original trilogy. There are new dangers, new villains, new cranks, and many new adventures to keep you well invested and anxious for more. Even with intertwining storylines and multiple points of view, Dashner still provides all his characters with strong development and background. Then again, Dashner’s strong suit has always been his dynamic and loveable characters, so don’t worry about missing our original crew too much. Isaac, Sadina, and Jackie will pull at your heartstrings as they take you with them through their adventure just as Thomas, Newt, and Minho did.

While The Maze Cutter centers around new characters and a new world 70 years into the future, this book is certainly not for people who have yet to read the original series. Much of the terminology, history, and events require you to have previous knowledge of the general setting and world-building of The Maze Runner.

All in all, The Maze Cutter thoroughly exceeded my expectations, and I recommend it to old and new fans of The Maze Runner series alike.

Movie Review: Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)

Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)
January 26, 2018
Director: Wes Ball
Writers: T.S. Nowlin (screenplay by), James Dashner (based upon the novel by)
Stars: Dylan O'Brien, Ki Hong Lee, Kaya Scodelario |
PG-13
2h 22min
Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Young hero Thomas embarks on a mission to find a cure for a deadly disease known as the "Flare".

I went to see the advanced showing of The Death Cure with my 16-year-old daughter last Thursday. She is a fan. And by fan, I mean owns at least two sets of all the books (there is the trilogy and two prequels) along with two signed copies of book one. Went to the fan convention, GladerCon, for the series, and has seen The Death Cure two more times since last Thursday. Here is a photo of Holly with cast members and James Dashner (the author of the books).
I enjoyed the first two movies (The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials). The Death Cure was my favorite of the three. It started off at top speed and never slowed down. Lots of action and things blowing up.

As a fan of the books, Holly says she is happy with how The Death Cure played out. Book fans were a little disappointed with the first two movies because some of the key scenes in the books had been left out, but The Death Cure made up for it. There were many nods at the book included along with some from Dashner's other series.

If you like big action movie troupes (they use them all) then you will like this one. I don't think you have to see the first two to enjoy The Death Cure, but it wouldn't hurt. The first two have been showing on TV so you can catch them for free.

Had to wait until my 14 year old daughter wasn't around to write this <G>. She is a MASSIVE Maze Runner fan. Read all the books many times and owns the first movie. We went to see the advanced screening last night with two of her school friends who haven't read the books, but like the movies (or at least the cute boys in it). From the three girl's perspective it was a great movie. I was told to give it 5 sheep or face teenage wrath.

It wasn't a 5 sheep movie for me, but it wasn't a bad movie. I read the first book (wasn't impressed), but not the second one. Apparently The Scorch Trial movie strays way off the path of the book! Not in terrible ways, but enough to have my daughter shell shocked.

For me, the movie was action packed. Those poor kids never stopped running...and the betrayal! A pretty brutal one. It was entertaining and the cranks (people turned by the Flare virus) are terrifying and well done. But Rose didn't take a nose and that really blows...you only understand this if you've read the second book, but it was a very important scene that was left out of the movie.

If you have young adults then take them, they'll enjoy it. Adults...maybe wait for the rental unless you're looking for something to do on a hot Sat/Sun afternoon.

3.5 "please don't tell my daughter the rating I gave it." Sheep

Movie Review: The Maze Runner

The Maze Runner (2014)
113 min - Action | Mystery | Sci-Fi

19 September 2014 (USA)Director: Wes Ball
Writers: Noah Oppenheim, Grant Pierce Myers
Stars: Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter
Thomas is deposited in a community of boys after his memory is erased, soon learning they're all trapped in a maze that will require him to join forces with fellow "runners" for a shot at escape.

Movie review by Holly (13 years old)

The Maze Runner was an a-MAZE-ing film with lots of action. I suggest you read the book considering that quite a few things were left out. The movie like I said was full of action and had no boring parts. The Grievers will terrify you and make your heart skip a beat. I strongly suggest that you see the Maze Runner, you wont be disappointed.

I give it 5 "WICKED" sheep.

Movie review by Sharon (mom)

I took my daughter and 3 of her friends to the 10:15 showing at the IMAX. Holly has been looking forward to seeing this movie since last year when she first heard about it. She has also read all the books in the young adult series by James Dashner.
This cast is a middle school girl's dream

The movie is PG-13 and I suggest you be cautious about bringing anyone much younger. There are a lot of emotionally intense scenes and some pretty scary action scenes. The movie focuses on these elements from the book. The dialogue seemed sparse when you consider how much went on in the book, but it makes sense considering this is suppose to be an action movie. And whoa! Was there a lot of it.

I would suggest seeing it on the big screen if you want to get the full impact of the maze and the Grievers. You will find yourself jumping and holding your breath.

The acting...well, not the strong point of the movie, but they do a great job of screaming and running for their lives <G>.

It was an exciting movie and worth a matinee price for an adult. Your older  kids will love it. But you might find them using Glader slang: "shank" "shuckface" "klunkhead" "greenie." Should you read the book first? I would say no as an adult because you find yourself dwelling on what they left out.
