Stephanie Fitzgerald has extended her stay at the exclusive island resort run by the mysterious Mr. Rook. A fantasy island of sorts, Rook’s Island is a hidden high-end resort designed to fulfill any woman’s sexual fantasy … for a price. No longer an undercover guest, Stephanie has taken an executive job on the island as overseer of its operations. If Stephanie is going to uncover the secrets of the island, she needs to keep to her primary objective: uncover what really happened to her beloved older sister, who disappeared while vacationing on the island. Stephanie’s undeniable attraction to Rook threatens to unravel all her best laid plans. To make matters worse, Stephanie is being threatened by the gangster who financed her undercover operation on the island.

Rook’s Island is proving to be a creative, entertaining series. Pamfiloff’s imagination and colourful characters make this a must-read series. While the relationship dynamics follow a familiar pattern, the story is unique and intriguing.  The series and its main male character are decidedly sexy. Forbidden passion is taken to a whole new level in this series. The pacing in the first part of Pawn is rather hurried. I found the storyline developed quickly, almost too quickly. I would’ve appreciated a slower unraveling of the revelations of book two. I also found Stephanie’s lack of communication beyond frustrating. However, the conclusion of this installment is entirely explosive. The intel revealed at the end of Pawn positions the series for a wild book three. I can’t wait.

If you’re unfamiliar with Ms. Pamfiloff, I highly recommend getting acquainted. You won’t be disappointed.  Pamfiloff’s King’s series is another definite winner.

PROLOGUE
It wasn’t supposed to be like this, you know. Such a fucking mess. But I should’ve guessed this was coming. Because when life becomes nothing but should-haves, there is no other possible outcome. My big sister, Cici, should’ve come home from her exotic island vacation four months ago. My father should’ve told me that Mr. Rook, the owner of the resort, came to see him with the news that Cici had drowned, instead of leaving me in the dark. I should’ve known better than to borrow money from a very dangerous man in order to fund my search for her. There are so many should-haves that I’m sick to my stomach with remorse.

But by far, my biggest regret is the moment I stepped foot on this island. Because once I set eyes on the devastatingly handsome Mr. Rook, I couldn’t stop myself from wanting him, from dreaming about him, from feeling drawn to the connection between us. I know it’s wrong.

Nothing good will come of it.

Because now I’m beginning to believe that Cici didn’t die drunk, swimming in the middle of the night. Just like I suspect that this past week with Rook—the touches, the forbidden kisses, the sexual hunger in his steel blue eyes—was an elaborate hoax meant to distract me.

Because he’s not just a wealthy businessman.

This island is no paradise.

And I’m no fucking idiot.

So while resisting this man will be the hardest thing I’ve ever done, I will find out what really happened to my sweet Cici. Otherwise I won’t ever be able to let her go, and my broken heart will be the end of me.

My name is Stephanie Fitzgerald. I am twenty-six years old, London born, New York raised, and I am the newest employee of Mr. Rook’s Island, where “your fantasy is our business.”

From NEW YORK TIMES Bestseller Mimi Jean Pamfiloff, Comes Part One of Mr. Rook's Island, a Sexy, Dark, Romantic Suspense.

He's Enigmatic, Dangerously Handsome, and COMPLETELY OFF-LIMITS...

The women who vacation on Mr. Rook's exclusive island are looking for one thing and one thing only: to have their wildest romantic fantasies come to life. Pirates, cowboys, billionaires--there's nothing Rook's staff can't deliver.

But when Stephanie Fitzgerald's sister doesn't return after her week in paradise, Stephanie will have to pose as a guest in order to dig for answers. Unfortunately, this means she'll need to get close to the one thing on the island that's not on the menu: the devastatingly handsome and intimidating Mr. Rook. And he's not about to give the island's secrets away.

Rook’s Island is an exclusive topical locale where women of means travel to have their every fantasy fulfilled. Select lucky ladies are secreted away to the unmarked resort run by the powerful and deadly attractive Mr. Rook, a man as mysterious as the island. But Stephanie Fitzgerald’s sojourn isn’t about discovering paradise, but rather uncovering the circumstances of her older sister’s disappearance from the island months earlier. Determined to find answers, Stephanie buys a spot to the dream destination, but soon discovers nothing is as it seems.

In the interest of full disclosure, I’m a Mimi Jean Pamfiloff fan. Her King series is one of my favourites. The premise of a sibling moving heaven and earth to avenge their sibling is a theme explored throughout the King series and it works well as an emotional motivator for the main character in this book. Stephanie makes a deal with a devilish character to raise the funds required for a stay at Rook’s Island. She is fearless, and probably a bit impetuous, in her pursuit for the truth. But I admire her strength and perseverance. For his part, Rook fits a type—but a type I like. He’s tall, dark, and beautiful, in an unworldly sort of way. Sporting a perpetual five o’clock shadow, Rook oozes intimidation and enigma. And so Pamfiloff has once again laid the groundwork for a stunning series. And while these basic elements aren’t new territory for Pamfiloff, her fans will undoubtedly be delighted by a fresh reboot of some beloved plot staples.

The paranormal aspects of Mr. Rook are subtle, at first. Initially, I wasn’t even sure if this was a paranormal story. It stands to reason that a sexual Neverland of sorts would house some kind of magic, I just wasn’t sure how much. The ending of the book hints at some stunning secrets that nicely build momentum and I found the ending quite satisfying, for now. There are two more books planned in the series. I can’t wait.
