I was given an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley but all thought and opinions are my own.

As the youngest member of the Ferraro family, Emmanuelle has watched each of her brothers find happiness in love while her own heart was shattered by a lover’s betrayal. For two years she’s stayed as far away from Valentino Saldi as possible—until she learns that he’s been shot during a hostile takeover of his family’s territory.

Emme’s first instinct is to call her brother Stefano for help, and soon the entire Ferraro clan arrives to bring Val back from the brink of death and protect the Saldis from further attack. With one choice Emme has re-exposed herself to Val’s intoxicating pull and dragged her family into the Saldis’ private war.

A deadly storm is brewing, and only time will tell who survives…
Emme has always loved Val but their families don't get along and her brothers have never really listened to her when she tried to tell them her feelings for Val. But Emme goes to him when she finds out he's been shot and when she calls her brothers for help, they don't hesitate to help Val and his family.

Val loves Emme but he said some things about her that really hurt her and even though he tried to make it right they are no longer together. So he's shocked to see her and her family after he wakes up after surgery for the bullet wounds he sustained.

After Val's uncle tries to kill him and his adopted father and he's gotten through surgery, his uncle comes back with his men to finish the job but by that time Emme's family is there to make sure they don't succeed. There's a huge fight but the Ferraro family is really good at killing the bad guys. Val is more than mad when he finds out that his uncle has been selling kids and women to the highest bidder and has horrible dungeons in some of his clubs where really bad things are going on. After finding out all this information and more he enlists Emme's family to help him rescue the kidnapped kids and women, shut down the clubs, and make the responsible people pay for it all. There's a lot of bloodshed and a lot of action in this book but it was great to see the Ferraro and Saldi family's working together to get it done.

There was one heck of a twist at the end but I really liked seeing Val and Emme finally come together. Sure they had a lot of things to work through and the whole shadow binding thing was just weird but I was glad to see Emme happy at last. All of the brothers and their wives are in this book and I really liked seeing all of them again. This series is best read in order because there are so many characters to get to know.

The sixth entry of Christine Feehan’s Shadow Riders series is Emmanuelle’s tale. The sole sister of the Ferraro family finally gets her own book after being featured in all previous installments. Readers know Emmanuelle is hopelessly in love with the forbidden and dangerous Valentino Saldi, the heir apparent to the Saldi crime family. The Saldis and Ferraros are locked in a generations-long feud and have long been at odds. Fiercely protective of their sister, the Ferraro brothers have tried to keep their sister safe and out of Val’s clutches. Recently Emme is willing to comply. She believes Val has betrayed her and was using her as a pawn in his family’s quest for power. But when Val’s family faces real and mortal danger, Emme is powerless to resist. She and her family swoop in to join forces with their enemy to defeat a larger, more nefarious foe.

Throughout the series, I was intrigued by Emmanuelle and Valentino’s story. We knew we’d eventually get the dirty details and were teased forever. As always, miscommunication is at the heart of Emme and Val’s strife and they must work together to build trust in business and love. The book is fast-paced and characteristically sexy as hell. Given Emme and Val’s tumultuous past, the tension between the two is simmering and deep. This was one of my favourite entries in the Shadow Rider series. Like other books in the series, there’s a HEA formula, so don’t expect anything completely novel.

All our favourite Ferraro heroes return in this book to mete out their lethal brand of vigilante justice. A new character, Val’s cousin and right-hand Dario Saldi, is fleshed out in this installment. As it turns out the Saldis have their own curious secrets and are more closely linked to the Ferraros than anyone imagined. I predict Dario will return in the series with his own story to tell. His dangerous persona and rough possessiveness will make him appropriately alpha enough for his own book.

Once I create my characters, I try very hard to have them react to situations as they really would. Sometimes I have preconceived ideas of what I would like them to do, but they don't mind me, because it would be out of character for them. They take on a life of their own. Sometimes when I throw difficult situations at them in the hopes I'll get a certain reaction and they don't do what I want, I complain bitterly to my husband and he laughs at me. Still, it is important to me to have them be real, not perfect people, so they make mistakes we lesser mortals might make.

Double Book Review: Shadow Flight (A Shadow Riders Novel #5) by Christine Feehan

May 5, 2020
432 pages
Chicago’s Ferraro crime family will do anything to protect one of their own in this thrilling entry in the Shadow Riders series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan.

Nicoletta Gomez was a terrified teenager when Taviano Ferraro and his brother saved her life. Ever since, she’s been trying to rise above what was done to her, molding herself into a survivor under the protective eyes of the Ferraro family. All the while, she’s been falling hopelessly in love with the man who knows her darkest secrets.…

With one look, Taviano knew that Nicoletta was his, just as he felt their shadows connect. But no matter how much he wanted to claim her, he knew she needed time to become her own woman. When Nicoletta once again finds herself in the sights of dangerous men, a split-second decision has Taviano breaking all of the Ferraro family’s rules to keep her safe. And as far as he’s concerned, the reward is more than worth the risk.

Mary Kirkland-Dark Thoughts Blog
I give this book 5 out of 5 sheep.
Taviano and his siblings are shadow riders, meaning they can disappear into the shadows and ride the tubes of the shadows to get from one place to another very fast. The family are essentially assassins and use their gift to meet out justice for people who have been hurt in very bad ways. They kill the worst of the worst so even though they are a very dangerous family and a lot like mobsters, they do it for a good cause. He and his family saved Nicoletta from her vile uncles who abused her and now he and his family keep her safe.

Nicoletta asks the Ferraro family if they can get tickets to a concert for her friend's birthday. Taviano goes with the girls to keep them safe but someone from Nicoletta's past spots her there and tries to kidnap her and her friends. Taviano has always had feelings for Nicoletta so when she asks to go with him to rescue her friends, it doesn't take much to convince him even though bringing her along might put him in deep water with his older brother.

The guys chasing Nicoletta are the same ones who abused her when she was with her evil uncles after her parents died so she wants to make sure her friend is alright or at least be there for her if she needs a woman to help her through what's happened to her. Taviano agrees to her request but puts her in danger by letting her come along.

Once the friend is rescued they have to make some hard choices about their relationship because she's now nearly twenty-one years old and Taviano has decided to pursue her in a romantic way. At first Nicoletta thinks that he's doing that because he has to until he finally lets her know how he's always felt about her. So their relationship starts out a little bumpy and she's not sure she can ever be with him in a sexual way because of what happened to her in the past but she feels safe around him and is head over heels in love with him so she agrees to give it a try.

He's a really nice guy under the hard exterior but I already knew that from seeing him in the other books in this series. The whole family goes after the gang that is after Nicoletta, they work well together. The family wants to make sure she is safe from this gang.

Their romance is slow and sweet because Taviano has to go slow with her but once Nicoletta feels more comfortable around him the romance gets hot and spicy. It was nice to watch these two get closer.

The most shocking thing in this book though was what was happening to Taviano's mother, Eloisa. In all the books in this series so far, she's been a hateful, vile woman that seems to hate her own daughter and wants to make everyone's life hell. She seems to hate all of her daughters-in-laws and there's never a real reason for her to act this way...until now. If you've been a fan of this series, you'll want to read this book to get caught up on this and the other things going on in Taviano's siblings' lives.

This series is one of my favorites right now because of the characters and all of the secondary characters that always pop up that are so interesting. They have a lot of cousins, some of them are also shadow riders so there's always talk about who they're going to go after next and why.

This series has a little bit of everything, intrigue, danger, romance, mobster-like families, alpha men who love with all their hearts and supernatural gifts that let them do things regular people cannot.

Shadow Flight is the fifth installment in romance phenom Christine Feehan’s Ferraro crime family series. The series follows the enigmatic Chicago-based Ferraro family. Perceived mobsters, the tight-knit members are actual righteous vigilantes, protecting the vulnerable and exacting justice. Select members of the family have the supernatural ability to “ride the shadows”, essentially dissolving in darkness to travel swiftly and furtively.

Book five is Taviano and Nicoletta’s story. Followers of the series will recall Nicoletta was rescued from her deranged step-uncles as a teenager and brought into the Ferraro family fold. Throughout the series Taviano has watched over Nicoletta as she worked to heal her scarred psyche. In Shadow Flight Nicoletta has grown into an accomplished, brave fighter ready to stake her claim on Taviano, the youngest Ferraro brother.

This installment has all the tried and true hallmarks of the series; high drama, loads of action, abundant steamy sex, and a happily ever after. Taviano and Nicoletta are likable enough and the story sufficiently entertaining. I like this series but worry it’s run its course. The books all follow a similar arc, and Shadow Flight didn’t have the same level of suspense present in some of the other books. The Ferraros can’t fail and justice is always served.

I hope Emmanuelle, the sole Ferraro sister, has a book on the horizon. Her story has been woven through those of her brothers, but I think it is time her whole story is told. The drama surrounding her romantic life is intriguing and perfect for the series. I sense Feehan has been laying the foundation of what could be one of the best Shadow Rider installments.

One family brings its own brand of justice to the streets of Chicago's shadowy underworld as #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan returns to a series hot enough to burn...

The paparazzi can't get enough of infamous bad boy Giovanni Ferraro. But unknown to them--and the women he beds--he's just playing a role. Keeping the spotlight on himself keeps it off the family business. And if this lethal shadow rider can't hunt in the dark, he'll find his pleasure elsewhere...

Sasha Provis grew up on a Wyoming ranch and thought she knew how to protect herself from predators. But in the nightclub where she works, she's fair game--until one of the owners steps in to protect her. Giovanni is gorgeous. He's dangerous. And his every touch takes her breath away.

The devil at her heels may have finally met its match...

Set in Chicago, the Shadow Riders series is a paranormal saga with crime family flair. The series follows the no-nonsense love and life adventures of the Ferraro family. Perceived mafia, the Ferraros live an outward life of privilege, but a private life of duty. Those within the sanctity of Ferraro territory can expect unparalleled protection and those who cross the Ferraros can expect unrivalled wrath. As riders of the shadows, the Ferraros can exact their stealthy vengeance with impunity.

Book three is the tale of Giovanni; a middle brother who has been sidelined from the action due to an earlier injury. Playing the role of lascivious playboy of leisure becomes a tiresome burden when Sasha sashays into Giovanni’s nightclub. Sasha, repulsed by Giovanni’s reputation, is a hardworking server uninterested by the lure of her darkly decadent boss. Soon, Sasha realizes there’s more to the Ferraros than she initially believed.

I love this series. Three books in and I’m as riveted as ever. With at least two sibling stories simmering on the backburner, anticipation is mounting. All three books have followed the same basic pattern with the same elements. The fact that I’m still hooked is a testament to Feehan’s effective storytelling. I’m still a little unclear on how the paranormal aspects of the story work; this element of the series is certainly nuanced. What’s not nuanced is the romance. The Ferraros – these dangerous, hardened assassins – fall hard and fast. As with any Feehan vehicle I’ve read, Shadow Keeper is rife with scenes of graphic, steamy sex between hard-bodied beauties with unparalleled sex drive. And if that’s not paranormal, I don’t know what is. Personally, I enjoy the ride.

Book Review: Shadow Reaper (Shadow Riders, #2) by Christine Feehan

#1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan returns to her scorching-hot series starring a Chicago crime family that has built its empire in the shadows...

Billionaire playboy Ricco Ferraro knows no other life. Being a shadow rider is in his blood—but so is a haunting desperation stemming from the secrets of his dark past. His recklessness puts not only his life at risk, but also the future of his entire family. To save them all, he must find a woman who can meet his every desire with a heat all her own...

Just when Ricco has given up hope, he meets her—a mysterious woman whose shadow connects with his. She’s someone looking for a safe haven from the danger that has stalked her over the last several months. In Ricco’s embrace, she finds one. But the darkness in which they so often find sanctuary can also consume them...

Christine Feehan’s Shadow series is paranormal romance meets crime family saga. Each book chronicles the adventures and romance of a Ferraro sibling. Book One, Shadow Rider was the tale of family patriarch Stefano. Book Two tells the tale of Ricco, a brother deeply troubled by a long-buried secret. The Ferraro family rules a section of Chicago. These wildly successful business men and women live the lives most people dream of. Benevolent to their friends, ruthless with their enemies, the family has a specific paranormal advantage that makes them virtually untouchable. The Ferraros can “ride the shadows” allowing them to travel quickly and stealthy from one place to another, sight unseen, until it’s too late … for their prey. Trained, efficient killers, each Ferraro is a warrior; their glamorous, party reputation merely a cover for covert operations.

In this installment, the Ferraros are besieged by a set of Japanese Shadow Riders intent on Ricco’s ruin over a long-time family grudge. Ricco has led a reckless life of fast cars and women, ut is ready for more stability and substance. And, as if one cue, a mysterious rider enters Ricco’s life. He’s sure she’s connected to his former life in Japan and immediately wants to uncover just how she’s connected. As one would suspect, a very heated romance ensues as Ricco learns to give and receive love.

This book is a hot, neck-snapping good time. I was entertained from beginning to end. It’s not entirely original, but it’s not the same old either. The Ferraro men are alphas to the core; jealous, possessive, domineering. Feehan writes a story with a good mix of intrigue, action, and steamy romance. Add to this Ricco’s penchant for Shibari, Japanese bondage art, and this paranormal romance really has something for everyone.

I’m looking forward to the rolling out of this series. I am curious how Feehan will keep it fresh. I look forward, in particular, to Francesca’s story as the only female sibling in the family. She seems to have a star-crossed lover vibe with the son of a rival crime lord. I predict this book will deliver sexual tension overload.

Book Review: Shadow Rider (Shadow Riders #1) by Christine Feehan

Shadow Rider (Shadow Riders #1)
by Christine Feehan

480 pages
The #1 New York Times bestselling “queen of paranormal romance”* is back with a sexy new series starring a Chicago crime family that hides a dark, mystical secret...

Whether it’s fast cars or fast women, Stefano Ferraro gets what he wants. When he’s not fodder for the paparazzi, he commands Ferraro family businesses—both legitimate and illegitimate.

While their criminal activity is simply a rumor yet to be proven, no one knows the real truth. The Ferraros are a family of shadow riders capable of manipulating light and dark, an ability Stefano thought ran in his family alone—until now.

With little left to her name, Francesca Cappello has come to Chicago in hopes of a new life. She wasn’t expecting to attract the attention of a man with primal hunger in his eyes, driven to claim her as his to protect and to please. And if he discovers her secret, it could ruin her... (less)

Francesco Capello, on the run from an influential adversary, seeks refuge with an old friend in an Italian neighbourhood in Chicago. But when the neighbourhood’s benevolent but dangerous ‘godfather’ claims her as his own, Francesca’s solitary life is turned upside-down. Stephano Ferraro protects his neighbourhood and its inhabitants like family and once he decides Francesca and he are linked, he becomes a man obsessed.

Shadow Rider is a paranormal romance with mafia tale flair. The Ferraro family is powerful, rich, and beautiful. Their family business is mysterious and precarious; once you’re in, there’s no getting out. The concept is entertaining and the first half of the book is deliciously written. I struggled to tear myself away from the unfolding story of Francesca, Stephano, and the Ferrero family.

I think it’s fair to say that Shadow Rider is light on the paranormal. I’m still not sure how shadow riding works and it’s not something that is explored at length. It’s less a magical maneuver, more of a tactical necessity. The family politics and romance are much more emphasised throughout the book. The second half of the novel is steeped in sexual encounter after sexual encounter and, while I’m never one to turn my nose up at a good textual romp, it became a bit daunting.

The central crisis of the story was fairly predictable as well. Because the absolute power and prowess of the Ferraros is constantly stressed, I had difficulty believing Francesca’s peril. The interest in this book is driven by characters and relationships, not necessarily original plot.

Overall this was a satisfying read and I will definitely check of book two when it’s released.
