I thoroughly enjoyed this book, despite my objections to post-apocalypse tropes, zombies, and the Young Adult genre altogether. The characters, storyline, and action simply won me over. I found the book difficult to put down and would sneak in quick reading sessions before work. I’ve been a long-time Karissa Laurel fan and her writing is always a win for me. She is imaginative and creative in her storytelling. I found the book exciting, romantic, and touching.

I would love a sequel to this book. There’s lots of road ahead for these characters and this world.

Why Did I choose an Alternative Victorian Era for “The Beckoning Void?”
Mostly because it’s a mashup of all my favorite things. History and sword fighting and adventure stories and old Hollywood banter all rolled into one. With airships.

The Victorian Era is great story fodder. You have enormous technological and societal changes going on, and that's really where science fiction as we know it today was invented. Look at Mary Shelley's “Frankenstein” (which is probably technically Georgian, not Victorian, but on the cusp) and Edgar Allen Poe and Jules Verne and H G Wells. This is where authors started looking at technology and asking, “What if?” which is the basis of all science fiction.

Plus, you can still combine all that tech with swashbuckling swordfights.

In addition to the science fiction possibilities, I wanted a diverse, eclectic cast, and that fits the era better than people think.

Emelia was raised in poverty, but had a talent for immitation that allowed her to find success on the stage, reinventing herslef as an actress and then a spy. The colonialism of the age creates the perfect circumstances for a character like Alyah. Mixed race, Afghan-English, raised by a father who taught her swordplay and riding who doesn't really fit into either world, so she finds her own way. The realities of the Famine and the new mobility . Connolly and Count Roderick are both products of the Wild Geese, Irish exiles turned soldiers in foreign armies, albeit with varied success. Captain Little is a great character. Escaped slave turned airship captain.

I drew inspiration for all of these characters from historical examples. None are exact analogues, but they certainly all have precedents.

One thing they all have in common, regardless of which side they wind up on, is that they are all outsiders. Whether due to race or class or gender, each of them has to find their way in a world that doesn’t accept them. The social, political, and technological upheaval of the Nineteeth Century gave me a terrific canvas to work with.

Not to say this is a book primarily about social issues. At its heart, it’s an action adventure swashbuckler with a touch of horror. Think the plot of the 1999 version of “The Mummy” with the banter of “The Princess Bride” and a dash of social commentary. Plus, a bit of mad science and airships.

Can Emelia and her band of plucky outcasts save the world from a cult of fanatics intent on unleashing an ancient horror?

It did not take long for the two new bodyguards to gather their belongings and meet Emelia at the Phoenix. After they had seen the ship and been shown their berths, MacGregor invited them all for a drink at the big table in the wardroom. As they took their seats, he reverently opened a new bottle of whisky.

“Not hoarding the good stuff for yourself?” asked Connolly.

“Figured you deserved a dram since I won it betting on you.”

“Trading on inside information?” said Connolly, accepting the offered glass.

“Having knowledge and failing to use it goes against every principle of engineering. At that point, you may as well just be a scientist.”

“Where do you two know one another from?” Emelia asked. “I know you said you met in the army, but there must be a story there.”

“We met in India. On the Northwest Frontier. Near Afghanistan,” said MacGregor.

“Long time ago,” added Connolly. “Twenty years?”

“Twenty-five.”

“Jesus.”

“I was in the Royal Engineers, doing aerial surveying and building bridges in that godforsaken country. Connolly here had a Company commission. Led a troop of irregular cavalry.”

“Like leading Ali Baba’s Forty Thieves,” Connolly smiled. “First class scouts, damn fine horsemen. Thieves to the bone. Steal the horse from under your saddle if you looked away. God, I miss ‘em.”

Alyah studied his face. “Khan Ali?” she said.

“What?” Connolly asked.

“You are Khan Ali?”

Connolly let out a laugh. “That’s what my men called me. Closest they could get to ‘Connolly.’ How’d you know that?”

“I think you met my father.”

“Age is a hell of a thing.” He shook his head. “Was he one of my cutthroats?”

“One of the cutthroats on the other side,” she said with a wide grin. “I think you have him to thank for that scar.”

“Really?” drawled MacGregor. “That’s a tale, now.”

“I did get that from some brigand with a tulwar,” said Connolly, rubbing a scar above his right eyebrow. “That bastard was your father?”

“He always bragged he struck down the great Khan Ali,” Alyah replied. “Now I know his boast has some substance.”

“He didn’t strike me down. We crossed swords, and he got the better of it. I killed two of his fellows that day before he and I fought.”

“He credited you with ten,” she said. “Before he defeated you.”

“It was only two. And he didn’t defeat me, he cut me. And escaped. I’d have caught him if it wasn’t for the blood running into my eyes.”

“It seems the young lady takes after her father,” said the engineer.

“If he’d been half as good as she is, I’d be dead,” said Connolly.

“So your father was an Afghan brigand?” asked Emelia, turning her curiosity on the other woman.

“Could be worse,” said MacGregor. “Could have been a Tory MP or a railroad baron.”

The Versipellis Mysteries, a Gaslamp Gothic series by Rhen Garland, follows the investigative adventures and misadventures of the immortal detective duo Elliott Caine and Abernathy Thorne. The premier book in the series, A Portrait of Death, ties several seemingly disparate scenarios together as a mystery unfolds during a weekend house party at the country estate of Lord Foster Marmis. A cast of characters has assembled for the gathering. When two savagely murdered bodies are discovered, all guests become suspects giving the story a bit of a Clue vibe.

Caine and Thorne are mysterious immortals, the overall logistics of which I did not quite understand by the book’s end. The story has all the trappings of a traditional Sherlock Holmes-style mystery mixed with the supernatural. Crane summarizes the book’s tone best when he remarks, “If you want esoteric reasoning, read Sherlock Holmes. If you want fast and a little more than mere esotericism – maybe even mysticism – come to me and I shall give you your fill!”

A Portrait of Death combines several genres weaving together political intrigue, murder, and a larger background storyline, including a subtle romance yet to unfold. I found it to be unique, witty, and entertaining. The book has a strong horror sensibility with grotesquely vivid descriptions such as “his organs left to hang where they chose; some of them hadn’t stayed the course and rested in a foul-smelling, viscous puddle against the side of the wooden prop.” The visceral descriptions, simultaneously ghastly and coolly academic, might prove too much for some readers. I intend to read the two subsequent installments in this intriguing series.

As a child, the Bloody Mary tale terrified me. Being in a dark room with a mirror was out of the question. I even begged my dad to remove a mirror in my room as I wholeheartedly believed Bloody Mary reached through the glass and pulled my hair while a slept. When I discovered Mary was the subject of the newest installment in one of my favourite series, curiosity and enthusiasm won out over irrational childhood fear. My bravery was rewarded.

In this installment, Ross characteristically delivers an enthralling, entertaining and charming story. The suspense and action are engaging and the relationship and character building ever so satisfying. Ross paints a rich picture of New York in a bygone era. Her characters are immensely likeable, even the unscrupulous James Moran. Harry is a heroine of a time long past, but very much suitable for the 21st century. She’s fiercely independent, honorable, and charming. She’s determined to forge a path of adventure and enlightenment but isn’t afraid to seek help and friendship along the way.

Kat Ross is a must-read author and Gaslamp Gothic is not to be missed. The next installment will also feature Harry and John and they research the beast of Loch Ness. I anxiously anticipate this next installment. I highly recommend another Ross series, Lingua Magika. The uniquely fascinating sci-fi western trilogy wrapped earlier this year.

A historical dark fantasy mystery, with a serial killer, magic, and some romance (growing between Edwina and Ian). If you enjoy Penny Dreadful, Carnival Row, and The Nevers, you will enjoy this novel. If you want action, this won’t be that book for you. It is the kind of book for a cold night, with a cup of hot tea nearby to enjoy.

Excerpt:

He materialized in the inky shadow.

Or rather his apparition did. His ghostly frame hovered before her, sinuous and lithe. Against his shadowed form, the string glimmered like liquid silver. Slowly he unwrapped her, tossing the spectral bands to the floor until a coil lay between him and her.

Something inside her chest fluttered. “You followed me.”

An accusation.

He nodded. With a slight shrug, he spread his hands. “You shouldn’t be alone.”

She wanted to turn, giving him her back, but her betraying gaze remained fixated upon him. When he paced around her, she waved him away. “Don’t.”

He caught her hand and placed an insubstantial kiss in her palm. “Let me help you…please.”

A gallant gesture, perhaps, but her skin-slider sensitivity noted the rigidity of his stance, the twitch along his jaw, and the slight narrowing of his eyes. How could he think of helping her when he was in so much pain?

Ordinarily, she might be grateful. Might…if loss hadn’t hollowed her.

She ripped her cooling flesh from his spectral arms. “I don’t deserve kindness.”

“Good.” He gave her a rakish smirk. “Because I’m not kind.”

She shook her head, biting back the emerging smile that had no place on her countenance. She couldn’t be civil, couldn’t risk the involvement. “I can’t go on like this—stuck betwixt life and death.”

“You must. Don’t you see, sweet dove? You’re beyond both. You’re immortal. Like me.”

What a damn fun book! I had no knowledge of this author before this point, that's shame on me, to be honest. I loved that this was a short story that could be read in an afternoon. It moved at just the right pace with the just right amount of every damn thing you could want. 

Fang watering vampires and sexy alpha men, yes, please! 

From start to finish you get your money's worth, the whole steampunk world was vibrant and drew me in completely. I loved the hot as all hell romance and the heist like action had me reading like crazy to find out how this would all end. 

If you're looking for something fun, exciting and thrilling then check this one out.

“If you say it again, I’ll stab you,” I said as I struggled to adjust the formal gown. The bulging bustle of fabric on my backside made my lower back itch, and my corset was too tight. A proper lady’s gown indeed, but I wondered how anyone who dressed in proper fashion got anything done. I touched the brim of my tiny top hat. It, along with my parasol, were the only pieces of the outfit I actually liked. Of course, the parasol had a feature that allowed me to slip the White Queen into the shaft to serve as a handle. Leave it to the Countess to think of that.

“All I said was that you look lovely. I hardly think that’s a stabbing offense.”

“Shows what you know,” I replied as I eyed him sidelong. He had changed into a fine suit and wore a black top hat. I both hated and loved being there with him. My conflicting emotions made me cranky.

“Tickets,” said a man standing just outside the door of the Crystal Palace.

“Good morning,” William said politely and handed the man our tickets.

The man stamped the date on the tickets then handed them back. Nodding, he motioned for us to enter.

Taking me gently by the arm, as a gentleman ought to do, William escorted me inside.

While the Crystal Palace’s ornate structure, made of glass and iron, towering several stories high was a sight to behold from the outside, nothing quite prepared me for the marvels inside.

As we entered, a cacophony of sounds reached our ears. The sweet melodies coming from a stand of self-playing harps, the screech of monkeys, the hum of machines, and the sounds of hundreds of voices rolled to our ears all at once.

The structure had been built around the tall ash trees that had stood in the park. They still stood standing tall in the middle of the structure. Fountains lined the center promenade. The crowd gasped and stepped back as a group from Africa passed on their way toward their display, lions on leashes walking in front of them. Not far behind them, a man wearing a straw hat jogged past pulling a rickshaw, two laughing—and elegantly dressed—ladies inside.

I gasped as a man flew overhead on wings made of lightweight material. To my great surprise, he flapped his wings, the metal of the clockwork bones and joints revealed when the sun overhead struck him just right.

William chuckled. “Shall we take it all in?”

Barely able to breathe, I nodded.

“Now, there is my Alice,” he said softly. “Her curious eyes open wide.”

I smiled. “It’s a wonderland.”
