Tara Fox Hall shares an encounter with the paranormal + giveaway

ALONE IN THE DARK

Halloween, the deliciously wicked time of year when all thoughts turn to horror. Favorite reruns of beloved horror movies and new gruesome novelties like the confectionery butcher knives I just bought today build the season’s celebration of fear slowly. Add in some fresh Walking Dead and Supernatural episodes for costume inspiration, the large pumpkins that wait to be carved, and the blackest night that even now is peeping in the windows, asking me to let it inside. I’m a horror author, so this is my season of glory to promo my newest horror and suspense work.

Walking Dead fans should recognize Tara dressed up at Wolf Carol
Instead, I’ve been drawing the curtains. What happened? Well, I got a little too close to the actual darkness.

I enjoyed being scared my whole life, devouring horror books and films from the age of 9, when I met Mr. King via the movie Salem’s Lot and his newest book, Pet Sematary. I was hooked instantly, reading all of his books to date and then moving onto vampires, ghosts, shifters, and anything scary I could watch or read. When I began writing, I started with short horror, placing my stories as fast as possible, to build my credentials. I based my creations on my frequent nightmares, which had grown over the years to be pretty terrifying. And everything was great for a few years…until I looked into the darkness and found something looking back.

Think what you will. Not everyone believes in true evil, or ghosts. But I was visited by both at my lake cabin for several summers. I endured nightmare after nightmare, until it got to the point I could not stay there alone, and was no longer sure of what I was dreaming versus experiencing for real in the waking world. You can read of the actual events at http://foxghosttales.blogspot.com/, under 2013 and 2014, including the interview with the medium, Alonnie M., that I called in to try to help. After a run in with the specter herself, she performed a blessing/cleansing at my family’s cabin the very next morning.

And now? Happily, whatever haunted the lake house seems to be gone. I enjoyed a wonderful summer there with friends and family, with no nightmares myself. Yet two of my friends did report nightmares, both of whom slept in the bedroom where the initial trouble began. This leads me to believe that while I have severed my own spiritual conduit, that evil spirit is still there. I have been careful to stay away from writing horror, letting my computer’s folder of half finished flash fiction gather e-dust. I watch scary movies only if accompanied, never alone.

Enjoy the season, but be careful. And if you’re going to read some horror to celebrate the season, try an audiobook. It’s never good to be alone in the dark.

Just Shadows
Written by: Tara Fox Hall

Length: 2 hrs and 17 mins
Unabridged Audiobook
Release Date:09-03-15
From the murky depths of a summer lake to the echoing halls of an insane asylum, evils both supernatural and mortal lie in wait for potential victims. Those innocent might escape by a hair's breadth, if they are lucky. Then again, they might not.

Just Shadows is a collection of disquieting stories; some horror, others suspense, ranging from classic haunted houses to murder to the apocalypse, and everything in between. Root for the victim or villain, it's up to you. Justice is blind, and sometimes the sword falls where you'd least expect.

The shadows are waiting for you. Dare you step into the darkness and be judged?

Comic Review: Monstress #1 from Image Comics

Monstress issue #1
Story: Marjorie Liu
Art: Sana Takeda
Cover: Sana Takeda
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $4.99
Pages: 66
Release: Nov 4th, 2015
Astonishing X-Men and Black Widow writer MARJORIE LIU returns to comics with artist SANA TAKEDA (X-23) for an all-new ONGOING SERIES! Steampunk meets Kaiju in this original fantasy epic for mature readers, as young Maika risks everything to control her psychic link with a monster of tremendous power, placing her in the center of a devastating war between human and otherworldly forces. The adventure begins in a spectacular TRIPLE-SIZED FIRST ISSUE, with SIXTY-SIX pages of story and no ads for this one-time price of 4.99!
This story is about the horrors of war and what becomes of those who survive. The graphic novel is both beautiful and horrifying.

This is what Marjorie Liu has to say about it:

“Monstress is about an outsider, a young woman who belongs nowhere; it is about young women who fight, who tame, who are consumed—and who become monsters in their own right,” said Liu. “I wanted to tell a story that encompasses all these things, and more. A story about women, young and old, picking up the pieces after surviving the horrors of war—and finding a home for themselves in a world that has otherwise exploited them. Set in an alternate history to our own, where immense Cloverfield-like monstrosities have conquered half the planet, and spanning the steppes of a shattered Asia, to the destroyed heart of a fallen Europe, Monstress is an epic adventure of frontiers and empires, and the rise of a young woman warrior, whose power may either doom or redeem the planet.”

Maika is a young Arcanic woman disfigured in the great war five years ago. Her people were consequently enslaved by the Cumaea, a race led by witches. The story starts out with Maika being sold to a wealthy and influential woman. It then alternates between the present and one month before her capture, where we learn of her plans to get revenge for her mother's death as well as all those who died in the war.

Author Liu and artist Takeda don't pull any punches in their steampunk depiction of the war-torn world Maika lives in. The artwork is stunning and in violently graphic detail. At the end, Liu shares the inspiration for this story; the very real events that over 200,000 Japanese woman suffered during and after WWII.

Book Review: Chronicles: The Library of Illumination and Second Chronicles of Illumination by C.A. Pack

Chronicles: The Library of Illumination
by CA Pack
Pages: 264

YA Fantasy
Within the walls of a centuries-old building lies the magical Library of Illumination where books literally come to life. What makes this library even more unusual are the two teenagers chosen to oversee its operation. Johanna Charette and Jackson Roth must use their wits to deal with the sometimes humorous, sometimes dangerous situations that arise when characters and scenes from enchanted books become real. As the teens learn about the library, themselves, and each other—their fates become intertwined. And when they stumble upon a scheme by someone in a distant realm to take control of all the knowledge in the universe, Johanna and Jackson are forced to put their lives on the line to battle an ancient foe.

Second Chronicles of Illumination
by C.A. Pack
Publisher: Antiqua Press
Pages: 480
Genre: YA Fantasy
Format: Kindle/Hardcover
When an alien invasion threatens the existence of all the knowledge in the universe, eighteen-year-old Johanna Charette and seventeen-year-old Jackson Roth must rely on their wits, guts, and pluck to save the fantasy-come-to-life world of the Library of Illumination.
It wouldn’t be so bad—all right, it is bad but it would hurt less—if Johanna and Jackson weren’t the ones responsible for breaching the portals to a dozen distant worlds. Now, outside forces are causing shock waves in the space-time continuum, and if that isn’t awful enough, someone from another dimension is trying to steal a book of powerful spells created by a very famous wizard.

At first, traveling to other realms in a time machine seems like a fun perk. However, discovering some inhabitants want to obliterate the teens doesn’t leave them with a warm, fuzzy feeling. Instead, they find themselves forced to sacrifice their own welfare and the safety of their loved ones for the greater good.

*To make it easier for future readers, The Library of Illumination is an ongoing series of novelettes, novellas, and novels. You can encompass these in two books instead of finding and reading each little novella. The Library of Illumination (chapters 1-15) is the start of the series. Chapters 16-25 are the same as Chapters 1-10 in the Second Chronicles which encompasses books 5-7.

The Library of Illumination is a very special library. It has books that come to life when opened! Imagine meeting the heartthrob of your favorite book or coming face to face with paranormal characters that you’d love to be? Books at the Library of Illumination could make your dreams come true but only if you are on The List. The series starts with Johanna working for Book Services. A very boring and tedious job but with it Johanna is tasked with delivering a package to the Library of Illumination. As the story continues Johanna is able to learn about the unique features of the library which she feels a very strong kindship with. Johanna is hired by the Library of Illumination and in turn hires a young man named Jackson to assist her with the multitude of duties that encompasses her job. Fun and imaginative with a little romance thrown in, these books can light up your day!

The Second Chronicles of Illumination repeats some chapters from Book 1 so if you do not read them back to back this will help refresh your memory. Chapter 16 from Book 1 is Chapter 1 in book 2. Jackson tends to find trouble. He’s a 17 year old teenager who doesn’t always think before acting! He kicks off this story with finding a portal to other libraries in other dimensions. This just kicked up the wow factor for me. Not only can the books come to life but I could travel to other dimensions for more adventures! Fabulous!

The series was well written with the only confusion of what books encompasses what! It is worth the time that I spent to figure it out and I really enjoyed the unique perspective of the stories. Great young adult read!

With the help of her mysterious and brooding neighbor Bryan, she begins to unravel the mystery of her mother’s disappearance, and in doing so, unearths a dark force seeking to bury Whisper Hollow. AUTUMN THORNS Excerpt 3
Speaking of . . . I glanced at Bryan, who was regarding me quietly. “Shapeshifter, huh?” So that was why he had used the word clan when talking about his father.

“You have a problem with that?” He stood beside me, leaning against the wall, arms crossed.

I considered his question. I’d been brought up to fear Skinwalkers, Native American shapeshifters. And I knew that various forms of shape changers existed—under one name or another. Truth was, shapeshifters were a worldwide phenomenon. And there were differing tribes and clans of them, all with their own unique abilities. Some were as evil as they came, others not at all. My immediate reaction was concern, but I pushed it aside as I remembered him jumping between Diago and me, knocking the spirit aside.

And then . . . there are the shapeshifters who guard the spirit shamans . . . The thought wouldn’t quit running through my mind.

“You saved my life, Bryan.” I gazed up at him, my voice soft. “You could have let him attack me . . . feed off me, but you didn’t. You exposed what you are in order to save me. And for that, I will forever be grateful. So, no, I don’t have a problem with it. I’d like to know more, though. I’d like to understand you better.”

He was suddenly sitting beside me, searching my face with a question I couldn’t quite place. But the energy had thickened between us, and I couldn’t look away from him.

“If you understand me better, it means you let me step into your world, Kerris. It means you open the door, knowing that once I come in, I won’t be leaving. There are consequences for that, and not all of my own making.” His voice was husky and I realized his face was mere inches away from mine.

As if in a dream, feeling like I was falling over the edge of a cliff willingly, I whispered, “I think I’ve already dragged you in.”
