A POWER TOO TERRIBLE TO CONTROL...

Samantha Hawthorne lives a rather curious life in New Orleans running a magic and herb shop. As an Elemental Witch in the Big Easy and owner of a wolf Familiar as well as the head of a former Faerie Queen, curious is as quiet as it gets for Sam.

Until children start turning into blood-thirsty Changelings and attack their parents.

When one of these children shows up in front of her shop, Sam and her friends are determined to find out where they’re coming from and where the exchanged children are being kept and put a stop to it. But will they succeed when they find themselves pitted against ninja ghouls, one of the oldest and darkest enemies of the mortal world, and a secret from Sam’s childhood that could unravel her magic?

This is the first time I’ve read Phaedra Weldon and I have to say I’m glad I did. The book grabbed me from the very beginning. Had all the elements I love to read; witches, magic, faeries and other things that go bump in the night.

Samantha Hawthorne owns a little shop in New Orleans, Bell, Book and Candle. She’s an Elemental Witch with a lot of power. She isn’t into following the herd and doing what she’s told which is probably why I loved her right off the bat.

Her little group is unique and made up of a Hedge witch and a Cyber witch. This is only the second series I’ve read that has a cyber witch and I was so excited to see it here. Times are changing and to see story lines change with it makes me oh, so happy! The mystery man of the hour is not her boyfriend, but rather her ex Crwys. Can’t wait to find out more about him in future books.

If you are looking for a new author this is the one to try! A quick read that has made me research her other books and I’m definitely going to read more of this series!

Character Guest Post: Top 5 Holiday Movie Picks (Traci Douglass-Blood Freed book tour) + giveaway

Liz and Dex’s Top 5 Holiday Movie Picks

Hi Readers,
With Christmas only a few days away and the snow flying outside, Liz and Dex—the hero and heroine in BLOOD FREED—wanted to share their favorite holiday movie picks with you.

Liz Frost: **waves** Hey everyone! So great to be here on the I Smell Sheep blog today. Dex and I are so excited to share our first Christmas together with you. Aren’t we, baby?
Dex: …
Liz: **nudges him hard in the arm** Baby?
Dex: Ow! (frowns) What?
Liz: We’re excited about sharing our first Christmas together, right?
Dex: (smiles slow and sexy, a glint in his violet eyes as he pulls closer) Oh, yeah. So excited.
Liz: Watch those hands, buddy. We have an audience… **giggles** Okay, Top Five movies. You go first, baby.
Dex: Huh? (nuzzles her neck) I can’t think when I’m touching you. You read them.
Liz: **sighs dreamily before pushing him away** Right. **pulls out list and does her best to concentrate as Dex kisses his way to her ear** At number five:

5. DIE HARD (1988)
Dex: Because it’s just not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from the top of the Nakatomi tower. Yipee-kay-yay, mother—
Liz: And we’re moving on to number four. My pick this time:
4. THE HOLIDAY (2007)
Liz: Because deliciously sexy and snockered Jude Law… so cute!
Dex: (pulls away, scowling) Seriously? You like that guy? Liz: He’s just a fictional character, baby. **kisses Dex on the cheek** But yeah, he’s adorable.
Dex: (growls)

3. ELF (2003)
Liz: Aw, you picked a cute movie, baby…
Dex: Not why I picked it. (pushes her long blond hair aside to lick her collarbone above her fuzzy pink Christmas sweater)
Liz: No? **tone breathy** Why’d you pick it then?
Dex: Love giving the real elves bad PR. (winks) Hate those guys.

Liz: Moving on to number two…
2. LOVE, ACTUALLY (2003)
Dex: Ugh. That’s your pick?
Liz: What’s wrong with Love, Actually? (scrunches nose)
Dex: Kind of sappy… (shakes head and goes back to nipping her neck while slipping his hand under the hem of her sweater)
Liz: It’s not sappy. It’s got Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Billy and Joe, the porno couple. What’s not to love? **shivers as Dex strokes her bare skin** We need to finish this list, baby. **clears throat** And Number One, by mutual decision…
1. IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1947)
Dex: (kisses Liz gently) It’s wonderful now that I found you…
Liz: **tosses list over her shoulder and pulls Dex closer** Aw, baby.

Well, then readers. Guess we’ll give these lovebirds some privacy. On behalf of Dex and Liz and the entire BLOOD RAVAGERS gang, I wish you Happy Holidays and Happy Reading!

Elizabeth "Liz" Frost has always been the wild one. But now, with a niece or nephew on the way and her promise to become half of the new psychic Oracle team for the Blood Ravagers Biker Gang, she's ready to turn over a new leaf. And what better way to start than by answering the call when gang leader Dante needs help? Her mission: to travel cross-country to get the information the gang needs to complete the Oracle Binding Ceremony. Should be easy, right? Except for the incredibly tempting lone-wolf shifter named Dex who'll be her riding partner and protector on the journey.

Dexter "Dex" MacCallahan is tasked with guarding Liz Frost, one of the gang's beautiful and bewildering new psychics. Dex can't refuse the mission, but there's one small problem. The time of his Rut is approaching, a rare occurrence where male wolf-shifters must physically bond with their chosen mate or face certain insanity and death. It could cost him not only the new life he's built, but also his battered, scarred heart.

Together, Dex and Liz must search for the information they need before his old nemesis and a rival gang annihilates all they hold dear. But when the simmering chemistry between them boils over into searing hot passion, will they risk losing their hearts to save the ones they love?

The Blood Ravagers Series
Book 3: Blood Vowed - coming soon

Excerpt:
Liz blinked her eyes open and squinted into the pre-dawn gloom, her hand clutching her tourmaline pendant. There was something incredibly warm pressed to her back. Something warm and…furry. Slowly, she raised her head slightly and peered over the shoulder to see Dex in his wolf form snoozing behind her.

He looked so beautiful, all tawny blonde with streaks of darker gold and rich chestnut brown. In slumber, his muzzle was open slightly and his darker lashes fanned out over his cheeks, matching the color of his whiskers. Despite the huge king-sized bed, somehow he’d ended up on her side and snuggle cozily against her lower back. A pang of sweetness ached in her chest.

The temptation to touch him was just too great. She turned slightly and stroked her fingers lightly over the soft fur between his ears. That’s when she noticed the scar. He’d said he didn’t have any physical ones, but he’d lied. This one stretched along his right temple up to the edge of his pointed ear, raised and hairless. Unable to stop herself, Liz traced her fingertip over it and Dex whined in his sleep.

He’d said at dinner the Council had coerced and corrupted his father, convinced him his own pack was out to get him, and that his once noble father had killed them all in cold blood—men, women, children. Liz’s own mother had taken her life, but at least she knew why. She’d been depressed, alone, with no hope for the future. Poor Dex believed himself to be tainted by his father’s actions, haunted by his heritage, lived in fear of repeating them himself.

Liz might not have been hanging around the otherworld long, but based on the Council’s treatment of Dante and now Dex, her dislike deepened into a true hatred.

Beside her the wolf grew more restless, his paws digging into the sheets and his whines growing louder, sharper. Without thought, she placed a hand on his side, hoping to calm him.

With a snarl, Dex sprang to his paws, all wicked fangs and sharp claws. His piercing violet eyes stared into hers for a moment, and Liz’s pulse stumbled at the raw power and need lurking in their depths. Not fully wolf, not quite human either.

After a few tense moments, he reared up on his haunches and light shimmered around the edges of his coat. The transformation started from the top down, first his head morphed back into the Dex she knew, followed by the rest of his body until the man sat before her once more.

A very handsome, very naked man.

Fingers shaking, Liz reached toward him. “Are you okay?”

“Don’t touch me!” Fast as a predator pouncing on prey, he took her wrist and rolled her beneath his body, trapping her against the mattress. His eyes were open, but unfocused. “I’ll fucking kill you if you touch me again!”

Panic surged within her at his lethal tone, but she did her best to soothe him. “Dex, it’s me. Liz. We’re safe. You’re safe.” He squeezed her wrist tight and she cried out in pain before she could stop herself. “Dex! Please. You’re hurting me.”

He blinked down at her and for a moment, she glimpsed the wolf behind the man once more—gorgeous, wild, completely ruthless. His chest heaved and his violet eyes narrowed and all she could think was she’d finally gone too far, like everyone always warned.

She was a dead woman.

Then, slowly, Dex’s expression softened and his gaze cleared. His tense muscles relaxed and he lowered himself on top of her, all his muscles and sinews pressed into her soft curves. A familiar hardness pressed against her lower abdomen and his warm breath ghosted across her cheek. Despite the circumstances, moisture gathered between her legs as a fresh wave of desire crashed over her.

“You shouldn’t have touched me.” His voice had gone all deep and growly from sleep. “I could’ve hurt you.”

Liz winced and pulled free from his grasp. “You did hurt me.”

Regret and pain flickered across his face. He reached for her wrist once more and gently brought it to his lips, kissing the delicate skin over her thudding pulse point. “I’m sorry. I never, ever meant to hurt you.”

“I know.” Without thought, Liz parted her legs, allowing Dex to slide between them, placing his hard cock right over where she needed him most. Only the thin flannel of her silly bunny PJs separated them. She somehow managed not to arch against him, in spite of her desperation. He was still very much opposed to having sex with her again and she didn’t want to scare him away.

As if in a trance, Dex kissed his way upward from her wrist to her inner elbow, then her bicep, then her shoulder. His eyes were closed and he seemed to be lost in his own fantasy. At that moment, Liz didn’t care what he was thinking about as long as he kept touching her.

With his other hand, he stroked her side, from hip to breast, over her pink tank top, his rough fingertips feather-light. She inhaled deep and closed her eyes, reveling in his practiced touch. Once his lips reached her neck, Dex nipped her slightly, then said against her skin, “Tell me why you have not life mated.”

So much for thinking he was lost in la-la land.

Liz stiffened. “What?”

Dex lifted his head and stared down at her. “You’re young, beautiful, smart. Why haven’t you committed to someone? Are you scared?”

“No!” She tried to buck him off, to no avail. “I’m not scared.”

“Then why are you alone?”

“Because I want to be, okay?” She looked away from his too perceptive gaze. “Welcome to the twenty-first century. Women can do just fine on their own, thanks so much.”

“But you’re lonely.” He nuzzled the sensitive spot below her ear, and damn if she didn’t have to bite back a groan. For a guy who demanded a hands-off relationship, he sure as hell was copping a feel. He cupped one of her breasts and his thumb flicked her rock hard nipple. This time there was no holding back the moan.

Dex froze. “Sorry.”

Liz glanced sideways at him. He looked like a lot of things—horny, hot as hell, wanton and willing—but sorry wasn’t one of them. “For what?”

He started to move off her, but she locked her ankles around his lower back and kept him right where he was.

“We’re in the middle of something here.” Her words emerged softer than she wanted, but with her pulse thudding hard between her legs and his cock pressed tight against her, honestly it was a wonder she could speak at all. “I’ll answer your questions if you answer mine. Deal?”

Leaning up on his elbows, Dex looked yummy enough to eat. The wolf tattoo on his right arm looked suspiciously familiar—same violet eyes, same shaggy blond fur, same quizzical expression.

“It that you?” she asked.

“Yes.” He sighed then ducked his head to lick the pulse point at the base of her throat.

“You realize you’re touching me again?”

“Yes.” His kisses trailed down the center of her chest to the valley between her breasts.

“And you realize where this could lead?”

“Yes.” His tongue grazed the edge of the fabric of her tank top and she shivered.

“And you’re okay with that?”

“No.” He pushed the neckline down with his jaw and took one of her nipples into his warm, wet mouth, sucking gently before pulling away again. “But I can’t seem to stop myself.”

Book Review: The Heartbeat Thief by AJ Krafton

The Heartbeat Thief
by AJ Krafton
Genre: New Adult Historical Fantasy
Publisher: Red Fist Fiction
June 2015
ISBN: 978-1508879152
ASIN: B00UZC9W7U
Number of pages: 320
Word Count: 85000
Cover Artist: Red Fist Fiction
Haunted by a crushing fear of death, a young Victorian woman discovers the secret of eternal youth—she must surrender her life to attain it, and steal heartbeats to keep it.

In 1860 Surrey, a young woman has only one occupation: to marry. Senza Fyne is beautiful, intelligent, and lacks neither wealth nor connections. Finding a husband shouldn’t be difficult, not when she has her entire life before her. But it’s not life that preoccupies her thoughts. It’s death—and that shadowy spectre haunts her every step.

So does Mr. Knell. Heart-thumpingly attractive, obviously eligible—he’d be her perfect match if only he wasn’t so macabre. All his talk about death, all that teasing about knowing how to avoid it…

When her mother arranges a courtship with another man, Senza is desperate for escape from a dull prescripted destiny. Impulsively, she takes Knell up on his offer. He casts a spell that frees her from the cruelty of time and the threat of death—but at a steep price. In order to maintain eternal youth, she must feed on the heartbeats of others.

It’s a little bit Jane Austen, a little bit Edgar Allan Poe, and a whole lot of stealing heartbeats in order to stay young and beautiful forever. From the posh London season to the back alleys of Whitechapel, across the Channel, across the Pond, across the seas of Time…

How far will Senza Fyne go to avoid Death?

Heartbreakingly beautiful, A.J. Krafton’s The Heartbeat Thief is a fantastic tale with an historical sensibility. Senza Fyne, a most intelligent Victorian beauty, wants for nothing except eternal life. Preoccupied by death, Senza finds little joy in the path her parents have intended for her. When the mysteriously enchanting Mr. Knell offers Senza eternal life, she willingly turns over her mortal life force for the chance to live, and love, without fear. A newly turned “heartbeat thief,” Senza covertly steals heartbeats from the living to sustain Knell’s spell. Miss Fyne travels far and wide only to find that what she most ardently seeks remains frustratingly elusive. What unfolds is a tale of personal discovery and macabre romance.

The Heartbeat Thief is intelligently written and beautifully original. Despite Senza’s vanity and arrogance, Krafton writes a character who is likable and relatable. Who doesn’t long to be the most desirable person in the room? Knell is a menacing, attractive character who remains elusive throughout the book. Like Senza, the reader chases after Knell to uncover his ultimate motivation. Senza’s journey is a well-crafted quest across the ages. One such highlight is Senza’s stay in Whitechapel during the terrorizing rampage of Jack the Ripper. The cast of characters that cross Senza’s path throughout her life flesh out the story and create a rich history for Senza’s extended lifetime.

Occasionally I enjoy a more nuanced and delicate read. While some readers may struggle with its subtleties and reserved pacing, historical fiction enthusiasts will find The Heartbeat Thief has much to offer.

Sheep Book Review: Nine of Stars by Laura Bickle + Giveaway

Nine of Stars (A Wildlands Novel)
by Laura Bickle
December 27, 2016
ISBN: 9780062437662
Genre: Contemporary Fantasy
Publisher: Harper Voyager
Following on the heels of her critically acclaimed prequel novels Dark Alchemy and Mercury Retrograde comes the first installment in Laura Bickle’s dark contemporary fantasy series, Nine of Stars, a Wildlands Novel

Winter has always been a deadly season in Temperance, but this time, there’s more to fear than just the cold…

As the daughter of an alchemist, Petra Dee has faced all manner of occult horrors—especially since her arrival in the small town of Temperance, Wyoming. But she can’t explain the creature now stalking the backcountry of Yellowstone, butchering wolves and leaving only their skins behind in the snow. Rumors surface of the return of Skinflint Jack, a nineteenth-century wraith that kills in fulfillment of an ancient bargain.

The new sheriff in town, Owen Rutherford, isn’t helping matters. He’s a dangerously haunted man on the trail of both an unsolved case and a fresh kill—a bizarre murder leading him right to Petra’s partner Gabriel. And while Gabe once had little to fear from the mortal world, he’s all too human now. This time, when violence hits close to home, there are no magical solutions.

It’s up to Petra and her coyote sidekick Sig to get ahead of both Owen and the unnatural being hunting them all—before the trail turns deathly cold.

If you don't know this author, or her series, get your fingers clicking to add this book to your ecollection pronto. I am absolutely hooked on this saga to the point of no return! It's vampire free but hey, I'm actually totally 100% okay with that.

Laura Bickle once again brings the deep rooted mystery and high flying fantasy with her latest installment. This series is soaked in the magic and almost elementally mystical side of life. The abundant amount of colorful characters will drag you in and wont let go. I know this for a fact since I dream about them at night! Yeah, sounds crazy but I don't care!

There's love on so many levels brought out throughout Nine of Stars. Heartache and twists that left me with a gaping mouth just hanging open catching flies. I thought I knew what was coming....I was wrong. So, so wrong. Action and adventure just add to the overall plot, creating texture and layers of masterful realness. I can not tell you how much I freaking LOVE this writer.

If any big-wig is looking to make a movie or TV series, I would put all my money on this one. I could see this being the next big HBO hit tomorrow. BUT start from the beginning of this saga, there is waaaaaaay too much you will miss out on if you don't!
