Movie Review: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
(Theaters): Nov 11, 2022 Wide
(Streaming): Feb 1, 2023
Director: Ryan Coogler
Writer: Ryan Coogler, Joe Robert Cole
Cast: Letitia Wright, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Tenoch Huerta, Danai Gurira
PG-13 (Sequences of Strong Violence|Action|Some Language)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Runtime: 2h 41m
In Marvel Studios' "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), Shuri (Letitia Wright), M'Baku (Winston Duke), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and the Dora Milaje (including Florence Kasumba) fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T'Challa's death. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda.

We waited for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to come to streaming to see it. I was concerned about the runtime. That's a loooong movie and I tend to forget things by the end of it. But Wakanda Forever was fast-paced and it didn't feel like a 2 hour 41 minute movie.

We thought it was entertaining and worth watching. The costumes... absolutely amazing. I was mesmerized by Nakia's (Lupita Nyong'o) mourning outfit. I wanted to find a video or gif because how the costume and head piece moved with her was jaw-dropping.

Tribute was given to Chadwick Boseman in the opening credits, the opening scene of the movie and at the end. There is one after-credit scene.

Definitely a must-see for Marvel fans.

Movie Review: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Director: Sam Raimi
Writer: Michael Waldron
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gómez
May 6, 2022
(Streaming) Jun 22, 2022
Rating: PG-13 (Frightening Images|Action|Intense Sequences of Violence|Some Language)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Runtime: 2h 6m
Distributor: Walt Disney Pictures
In Marvel Studios' "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

I'm still not going to theaters, so I waited for this to hit streaming. It was nice jumping back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I love the casting of all the characters and, there is always lots of action and fun. Except for The Elementals...I don't know what that hot mess was, so I pretend it never happened...

I liked the storyline of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. I managed to avoid spoilers so I was surprised who the villain was! Things have taken a dark turn for some after the Blip.

The one thing I didn't like was the heavy CGI...I know it's hard to travel and show a multiverse without it and, all the MCU movies have heavy CGI... I don't know,;, it just bothered me lol.

It was definitely entertaining and worth checking out, but it wasn't one of my favorite Marvel movies.

Movie Review: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

movie review, Shang-Chi, Marvel, Ten Rings,
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
(Theaters): Sep 3, 2021
(Streaming): Nov 12, 2021
Director: Destin Daniel Cretton
Writer: David Callaham, Destin Daniel Cretton, Andrew Lanham
Cast: Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng'er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong
Rating: PG-13 (Sequences of Violence & Action|Language)
Genre: Adventure, Sports & Fitness, Action, Fantasy
Runtime: 2h 13m
Marvel Cinematic Universe
Marvel Studios' "Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings" stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization. The film also stars Tony Leung as Wenwu, Awkwafina as Shang-Chi's friend Katy and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan, as well as Fala Chen, Meng'er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.

Fantastical! I watched Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings with no cannon knowledge of the character. Like all Marvel movies, it was a visual buffet of action. But Shang-Chi beats out other Marvel films when it comes to the beauty of the fight scenes. Martial arts are poetry in motion, and they highlighted that with incredible CGI. The ten rings are possibly the coolest and prettiest weapon!

Loved Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, and I've always been a fan of Awkwafina who played his best friend Katy. I liked the fact that Katy and Shang-Chi are best friends...that's it! No cliche romance. They might get together later on in the comic, but it would be nice to let them have a relationship like Hawkeye and Black Widow.

I have to mention Morris. He is one of the mythical creatures from the legendary village of Ta Lo. But what is he? He is The Hundun, or Dijiang, a faceless being of Chinese myth. You can read more about the Hundan HEREAnd in Disney style, you can buy this adorable guy!
Like all Marvel movies, there is a lot of humor. While there are some weak spots in the storytelling, Ten Rings is entertaining from start to finish! We aren't going to theaters yet, so I had to wait for it to come on Disney+, but boy, this would be fun to see in IMAX.

Movie Review: Black Widow (2021)

Black Widow (2021)
Jul 9, 2021
Director: Cate Shortland
Producer: Kevin Feige
Writer: Eric Pearson
Cast: Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz
Runtime: 2h 13m
Production Co: Marvel Studios
Rating: PG-13 (Some Language|Intense Violence/Action|Thematic Material)
Genre: Adventure, Action
Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy, and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

My husband, 20-year-old daughter, and I rented Black Widow last night. It is all things you expect to see in a Marvel movie. Big action scenes, car/motorcycle chases, hand-to-hand fighting with crazy moves, explosions! You got to have explosions. I wish we could have seen it on the big screen. But it was still enjoyable on our TV.
I liked learning about Black Widow's origin story. I don't know the comic book canon so I can't comment on any differences there. You get a little drama mixed in with some humor (why I love Marvel films) but the writing didn't quite meet the bar set by Phase 1 Marvel movies. But props to the writing team for making fun of the superhero landing.
I can't talk about the plot too much, but we do learn why Black Widow can take as much physical abuse as she does and still walk away like the other superpowered Avengers.

I am completely confused about all the different MCU phases and how they fit. Where the Phase 1 movies are pretty much a linear timeline, these new phases (movies and TV series) turn the timeline into a web. All the parts connecting to multiple movies. When I think about the scope it blows my mind!

Black Widow connects to the Disney TV series (Falcon and Winter Soldier) and leads into a future Hawkeye story and ultimately a Thunderbolts storyline which I had never heard of until I searched it. And I am down for that one!

There is an after-credits scene that shows the direction of this storyline.

Basically, if you love the Marvel movies, you'll love this.

Audio Book Review: The Dark Phoenix Saga

September 29, 2020
Author: Stuart Moore
Narrator: Nancy Wu
Publisher: Marvel
Listening Length 11 hours and 34 minutes
Piloting a shuttle through a deadly solar flare, Jean Grey saves the X-Men, but is possessed by one of the universe's most powerful forces - the Phoenix. As she adapts to her new powers, the mutant team launches an assault against the clandestine organization known as the Hellfire Club. Once inside, however, Jean is tricked by the villain Mastermind into betraying her teammates. She becomes first the Hellfire Club's Black Queen and then Dark Phoenix, as the power to destroy worlds bursts forth uncontrolled.

Shooting into deep space, Jean destroys an entire star system, then encounters a cruiser piloted by the spacefaring race the Shi'ar. When the cruiser is obliterated, the Shi'ar queen decrees that the Phoenix must die. But only the X-Men can hope to stop Dark Phoenix and save Jean Grey.

I’ve been an X-Men fan since I was a kid. I watched the original animated series and practically every animated spin-off and reimagining that has come out. I’ve watched all the films, good or bad, and will always say Hugh Jackman is my Wolverine and Jean Grey is my favorite character.

But can you believe I’ve NEVER read The Dark Phoenix Saga? I’ve never had the chance until now! Before I continue, I have to state that the audiobook version that I am reviewing is the novel form (by Stuart Moore) of the original comics (story by Chris Claremont and art by John Byrne). It has been updated to reflect more modern times, most noticeably the use of cell phones and computers.

I enjoyed the story very much. Being a Jean Grey fan, I loved getting to know a character that has been pushed into the background for many years despite her having incredible powers. In fact, this “modern” version of the story has Jean acknowledging and becoming frustrated at being controlled by the people around her, especially Scott. Which I always thought was a reason he wasn’t a good match for her. Scott himself even has an “aha” moment where he realizes Jean is her own person with dreams and wishes he didn’t know about (Really Scott? It took you that long?). He does try to change his ways, but I feel that it wasn’t even a priority to “update” Scott. He has moments of reverting to his old behaviors and never really makes a true effort to be a better man.

I loved being able to take a more thorough walk, so to speak, with Jean as she becomes more assertive, more dangerous, and more accepting of her powers. I think that the story had more potential to delve into Jean’s psyche than it actually did. I also think that there were a tad too many X-Men and far too little for them to do. It took up time in the story that could have been used elsewhere.

Overall, though, I enjoyed finally getting to know the Phoenix Force’s story and a little more about Jean herself. I think there’s room for improvement, of course, and I’d love to read the original comics someday. Narrator Nancy Wu does a good job bringing the story and Jean herself to life and reminding me why I love the X-Men so much.

Sheep Movie Review: Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019) no spoilers

Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
July 2, 2019
Director: Jon Watts
Writing Credits: Chris McKenna, Stan Lee (based on the Marvel comic book by) and Steve Ditko ... (based on the Marvel comic book by) Erik Sommers ... (screenplay by)
Cast: Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon
Rating: PG-13
Runtime: 2h 9min
Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
Following the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.

Went to see Spider-man: Far from Home with my husband and 18-year-old daughter. It lived up to the hype. We all enjoyed it...my daughter more so for reasons *Tom Holland*. But I have to agree with her. Tom Holland is the cutest little Spider-man ever. Brilliant casting.

Spider-man Far from Home is well written. It deals with the sad aftermath of Endgame for Peter Parker but also keeps the fabulous humor Marvel does so well. I really liked Jake Gyllenhaal as Mysterio.

This would have been a 5 sheep movie, but tech used by the bad guy just didn't seem plausible...I know, it's fiction but it stretched the capabilities of the Marvel universe tech a little too much for me.

This is definitely a must see for fans and see it on the big screen. Stay for the two after-credit scenes. There are pretty important for the whole MCU.

Sheep Movie Review: Dark Phoenix (2019) No Spoilers

Dark Phoenix (2019)
Jun 7, 2019
Directed By: Simon Kinberg
Written By: Simon Kinberg
Cast: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan
Rating: PG-13 (for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action including some gunplay, disturbing images, and brief strong language)
Genre: Action & Adventure, Drama, Science Fiction & Fantasy
Studio: 20th Century Fox
In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite -- not only to save Jean's soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

Maybe all the bad press about Dark Phoenix had me going into the movie with low expectations, but I enjoyed it.  I went with my husband and 18-year-old daughter. My husband agreed with me. My daughter, who isn't a big X-Men fan, wasn't as impressed with it. She said there wasn't a cohesive plot. I must have been so caught up in the awesome X-Men fighting scenes that I didn't notice the lack of plot. I thought this had the best action/fight scenes of all the X-Men movies.

The X-Men were more bada$$ compared to the other films. Beast was a flocking BEAST! Rawr! I love me some Michael Fassbender but Magneto is a fickle character. He flips loyalties way to quick. I really like the Jean Grey character...kind of got a girl-crush on Dark Phoenix. All those Cherik fans (if you don't know what that is then you aren't one and forget I said it) are gonna have fuel for that fire.

My husband and I thought it was worth seeing. It looked good in IMAX. Our daughter didn't. I haven't gotten a rating from her but I would guess she'd give it 3 or 3 1/2.

*There was no post-credit scene.

Sheep Movie Review: Captain Marvel (2019) Spoiler-free

Captain Marvel (2019)
Mar 8, 2019
Directed By: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
Written By: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck, Geneva Robertson-Dworet
Cast:
Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, Annette Bening
Runtime: 128 minutes
Studio: Marvel Studios
Rating: PG-13 (for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and brief suggestive language)
Genre: Action & AdventureScience Fiction & Fantasy
The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Went to see Captain Marvel with my 17-year-old daughter. We both loved it. We went in with very little knowledge of Captain Marvel's origin story. I thought they did a Flerken-great job and Marvel continues to make humorous action-packed entertainment.

There are a lot of surprise tie-ins with the other movies. We now know how Fury lost his eye!

I thought Brie Larson was a great choice. And the only skin she bared were her feet. Annette Benning was stunning. Jude Law looked good as ever. The only disappointing character was Carol Danver's best friend, Maria. There should have been more chemistry between them. And I thought the soundtrack was weak compared to other Marvel movies.

The real star of the movie is Goose...you'll just have to wait and see what I mean by that ;)

This is one you want to see on the big screen, just like all the other Marvel movies. Stick around for the two after credit scenes. One is directly related to Endgame and the other is silly fun.

Sheep Movie Review: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) Spoiler-free

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
In Theaters: Dec 14, 2018
Cast: Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson (XVI), Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin
Rating: PG (for frenetic sequences of animated action violence, thematic elements, and mild language)
Genre: Action & Adventure, Animation, Kids & Family, Science Fiction & Fantasy
Runtime: 100 minutes
Studio: Sony Pictures

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, bring their unique talents to a fresh vision of a different Spider-Man Universe, with a groundbreaking visual style that's the first of its kind. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduces Brooklyn teen Miles Morales, and the limitless possibilities of the Spider-Verse, where more than one can wear the mask.

What a fun and heart-warming movie! I went to see Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse with my 17-year-old daughter and a friend of mine. All three of us loved it. I'll admit to crushing on dad-bod Peter Parker.

There was an intriguing story backed up with great writing. The well-placed humor broke up the darker moments but the overall tone is a positive coming-of-age story.

And let's give a big standing sheep-ovation to the animators. Wow. The mixing of animation styles could have been a visual nightmare but they pulled it off and enhanced the whole interdimensional theme.

This movie is one you want to see on the big screen.

Sheep Movie Review: Venom (2018)

Venom
Oct 5, 2018
Directed By: Ruben Fleischer
Written By: Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, Kelly Marcel, Will Beall

Cast: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed

Rating: PG-13 (for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for language)
Genre: Action & Adventure, Drama, Science Fiction & Fantasy
Runtime: 112 minutes
Studio: Columbia Pictures
Journalist Eddie Brock is trying to take down Carlton Drake, the notorious and brilliant founder of the Life Foundation. While investigating one of Drake's experiments, Eddie's body merges with the alien Venom -- leaving him with superhuman strength and power. Twisted, dark and fueled by rage, Venom tries to control the new and dangerous abilities that Eddie finds so intoxicating.

I don't understand all the hate for Venom. My 17-year-old daughter and I went to see it. We both found it entertaining. Stop comparing it to other Marvel films and enjoy it for what it—fun!

The critics are right about the first part of the movie. It moves slowly compared to the second half. But that doesn't mean the first part is bad. And Holly and I agree that the action-packed half makes up for it.

I didn't know much about Venom before seeing the movie so I'm not comparing it to the comics. I loved Venom. He is a snarky alien who got put in a snarky guy. With the PG-13 rating, there is no blood even though Venom eats a head or two...but they totally deserved it!

This movie isn't a masterpiece, but we laughed and cheered. There are a lot of big action scenes that look great on the big screen. If you see it be sure to stick around for the two after credits scenes!
