Movie Review: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Director: Sam Raimi
Writer: Michael Waldron
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gómez
May 6, 2022
(Streaming) Jun 22, 2022
Rating: PG-13 (Frightening Images|Action|Intense Sequences of Violence|Some Language)
Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy
Runtime: 2h 6m
Distributor: Walt Disney Pictures
In Marvel Studios' "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

I'm still not going to theaters, so I waited for this to hit streaming. It was nice jumping back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I love the casting of all the characters and, there is always lots of action and fun. Except for The Elementals...I don't know what that hot mess was, so I pretend it never happened...

I liked the storyline of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. I managed to avoid spoilers so I was surprised who the villain was! Things have taken a dark turn for some after the Blip.

The one thing I didn't like was the heavy CGI...I know it's hard to travel and show a multiverse without it and, all the MCU movies have heavy CGI... I don't know,;, it just bothered me lol.

It was definitely entertaining and worth checking out, but it wasn't one of my favorite Marvel movies.

3.75 "Calling Dr. Sheep"

Author Samantha Bryant guest post: The female Anti-hero

I was on a panel with Samantha Bryant at ConGregate 2016. She was an interesting lady and author of a unique female superhero series: A Menopausal Superhero. She is going to talk about the female anti-hero.

I've always had a grumpy side. Even when I was a little girl, it was no secret when I didn't like something, especially if my sense of justice and fairness was offended. I may have looked like Melissa Gilbert from Little House on the Prairie on the outside, all freckles, braids, and sunny smiles, but inside, I made this face a lot:

I think that's why a lot of my favorite characters (or as I think of them: imaginary friends) get described with words like irascible, hot-tempered, fiery, edgy, sarcastic, or even surly. Characters like Wolverine, Daria (late 90s cartoon), George Jefferson, lots of people played by Humphrey Bogart, Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis, or Barbara Stanwyck. I like it especially when the "grump" factor comes from passionate convictions and frustration at the state of the world. That crusty veneer that covers a deep compassion. Good people who take no sh*t.

It's trickier when those characters are female. If you're going to be a female curmudgeon, you have to also be funny (like Dorothy Parker level quip-tastic), or you catch a whole new type of flack that no one even throws at male curmudgeons."Unlikeable" male protagonists are antiheroes, with wounds and scars (real or psychic), but it's harder to sell a female protagonist that behaves the same way. The words used to describe those women are better applied to female dogs.

So, of course, I had to write one.

My entire superhero series comes from a curmudgeonly place in my heart--a part that is offended because superheroes (especially female ones) are all twenty-three years old, somewhere between physically fit and impossible, and single with no families. Where are the adults? The mothers? The women with large enough bodies to support those very impressive breasts?

So, meet Patricia O'Neill, 58 year old corporate executive and sometimes lizard-woman.

(artistic rendering by Charles C. Dowd)
Patricia is a very independent, self-assured woman and doesn't especially care if you like her. She wants results yesterday if not sooner and she's not afraid to take matters into her own hands to make that happen. So, in Going Through the Change, when her powers manifest and turn her carefully orchestrated life upside down, it's not easy for her to reach out for help. It's a real surprise to her when her best support comes in the form of a twenty-two year old girl foisted upon her as an intern.

Here's an excerpt from their trip to the mall to buy Patricia some clothes that can survive a transformation (it's the lead-in to a really fun super-heroic moment). The two are seated on a bench near a beauty pageant being held on the mall's mainstage.

Patricia gestured behind her with her empty smoothie cup. “God, I hate these things.”

Suzie nodded, slurping something pink through her straw. She wiped her mouth on the back of her hand and said, “I don’t know what’s worse: the old men ogling not-yet legal girls or the girls themselves, pinning all their hopes on push-up bras and makeup.”

Patricia stared at her. “I’m surprised to hear you say that.”

Suzie said, “I’m just blonde, Patricia. Not stupid.”

Patricia cringed a little. “I know you’re not stupid. At least, I know that now. But look at you.”

Suzie looked down at her bright blue skirt and pink platform sandals. “I like bright colors.” She turned to face her boss. “Listen, Patricia. This is how I look. I can’t help that any more than you can choose how you look. I was born this way. But how I look is not who I am.”

“I really underestimated you.”

“Of course you did. Everyone does. That’s part of what makes me so awesome. I’m a secret weapon.”
I love all my super-women, but Patricia speaks to that inner curmudgeon like none of the others, and it was fun to make her reveal her marshmallow insides.

How about you? Got a favorite grump? Or do you prefer idealistic heroes? (If so, let me tell you about Linda Alvarez . . . )

Going through “the change” isn’t easy on any woman. Mood swings, hot flashes, hormonal imbalances, and itchy skin are par for the course. But for these four seemingly unrelated women, menopause brought changes none of them had ever anticipated—super-heroic changes.

Helen discovers a spark within that reignites her fire. Jessica finds that her mood is lighter, and so is her body. Patricia always had a tough hide, but now even bullets bounce off her. Linda doesn’t have trouble opening the pickle jar anymore… now that she’s a man.

When events throw the women together, they find out that they have more in common than they knew—one person has touched all their lives. The hunt for answers is on.

Book Review: Push and Pull (Vampire Favors #1) by Emily Cyr

Push and Pull (Vampire Favors Book 1)
by Emily Cyr
April 2, 2015
Print Length: 336 pages
Seven years ago, Addison Fitzpatrick found herself in a bit of a bind. In true Addison-fashion, she'd angered a drug dealer; she may have “forgotten” to pay him. Just when it was time to pay the piper, she was offered a way out by an unlikely being. Cannon Blackwood, master of vampires, made her an offer she couldn't refuse. Now, Addison owes Cannon three favors.

Seven years after that fateful meeting, just as Addison’s life is getting back on track, Cannon calls in one of the favors she owes him. There is a new drug that threatens the very existence of the vampire race and Cannon needs Addison, along with his brother Lachlan, who happens to be a professional thief, to steal it and destroy any evidence of it.
Not only is the future of the vampires on the line, but with both Cannon and Lachlan vying for her attention, her heart is as well. Addison has difficult choices to make and dangerous favors to repay if she wants to see the light of another day.

I do love a good vampire romance, call me cheap, call me dirty but don't pass me up when it comes to hot and heavy fangers! This story had a lot I could sink my mini pokers in to. Characters that had me turning the pages to see what would happen next.

I really enjoy a tale of past and current struggles between characters. Not to the point of angst but something that drivers them to do what they do. This story had that. The triumph and over coming of obstacles in the way. Yes and yes! I give me more of this, when it's done right I'll take it every single time.

Romance lovers will get their fill with some really, really steamy pages. Don't mind if I do! Vampires hold my heart and this new author has me intrigued to see what she'll come up with next. I recommend this one to all who love a hot and sexy vampire tale.

Sheep Movie Review: Captain America: Civil War (Spoiler-Free)

Captain America: Civil War
May 6, 2016 (USA)
Directors: Joe Russo, Anthony Russo
Adapted from: Civil War
Producer: Kevin Feige
Production companies: Marvel Studios, Marvel Entertainment
PG-13 2016
Fantasy/Science fiction film
2h 27m
Political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability when the actions of the Avengers lead to collateral damage. The new status quo deeply divides members of the team. Captain America (Chris Evans) believes superheroes should remain free to defend humanity without government interference. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) sharply disagrees and supports oversight. As the debate escalates into an all-out feud, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) must pick a side.

Sharon's Review
5 "tic-tac", "Stank" Sheep

*squeak* So Captain America...wow, he's pretty...and Iron Man get in a fight...then the Scarlet Witch...boy, did I underestimate her! And then Black Panther comes in (purrrrr) and I really like him...but then Spider-man...who knew he was such a little cinnamon roll...of course then Falcon flies all over the place being really funny...but Tony Stark hurts Antman's feelings and they all fight at the airport and things blow up...Captain America, Bucky, Falcon in a VW Bug...there is a bad guy who wants vengeance...Clint will make you look...I love Bucky Barnes!!!

Okay, I think I covered everything. My 15 year old daughter and I went to opening night IMAX 3D. First we made a stop at the bakery nearby.
We got the theater about an hour early and stood line with a bunch of other nerds. We met Tabby Lou, a local chibi artist http://www.paprika-studios.com/. It was a lot of fun.

First off, I don't recommend seeing it in 3D. The fast moving action scenes with 3D-ness makes it hard to keep up with what's going on. Needless to say, I LOVED it. If you enjoyed all the previous Marvel films, then you need to see this...on the big screen...cause reasons...okay, cause Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers, Black Panther, Falcon, Hawkeye. And Spiderman was adorkable. The movie was funnier than I expected, which was good. Falcon, Antman and Bucky are hilarious together. There are epic battles and everyone gets hurt, but that's okay...
I will be seeing it again on a standard screen cause...reasons. I was Team Cap (actually Team Stucky. Don't ask, you probably don't want to know <G>) before the movie and I am still Team Cap. There were superheroes on the other side...I think...doesn't matter.

This is me after the movie. Are those tears of joy or sadness? Muwahahaha!

Katie's Review
5 "Bucky was working out" Sheep

So I had waaaaay less caffeine then Sharon did BUT my thoughts are pretty much the same. I will add though that there was ton more girl ass kicking. The chicks usually get the short end of the stick in these films but not so much this time around. So tops off to the gals!

I also did know the overall story-line for this saga, however seeing it come to life was a much more emotional experience then I expected. It's hard to watch the heros you love fight against each other, but that's life sometimes! You may also be surprised by Aunt May, I sure was.

Make sure to stay tuned until the very very very last credit. There are TWO extra scenes at the end of this one. Good stuff!

In the metropolis of Lower Triton, the city’s greatest hero, Virtue, its nastiest villain, Malice, and a run-of-the-mill guy named Jeff have something extremely important in common. They’re all the same guy — and none of them knows it…until now! But when Jeff stumbles upon Malice’s diabolical plan to murder Virtue, he has to step in way over his head, to try to save himself — all three of himself — from himself! Collecting the first volume of the Fracture series, writer Shawn Gabborin and artist Chad Cicconi take you into a meta-human journey on multiple levels of insanity, comedy and abject chaos!

This is a quick and fun read. The premise is genius. An ordinary guy named Jeff finds out he is also the city's biggest superhero and supervillain. How is this possible? Well, you have to read it to find out. What does Jeff do when he finds out superhero Virtue has a wife and kid? And supervillain Malice is planning to kill Virtue? The crazy begins, that's what.

This comic is aimed at the 12 and up crowd and the simplicity of the story telling reflects that. I would love a more grown-up version released under Action Lab Entertainment's adult imprint Danger Zone.

Action Lab has brought another quality comic to their line-up.

3 1/3 "who am I again?" Sheep (if this was an adult version I can see it getting 4 or more sheep from me)

Issue #2 in the universe shattering The Valiant [Valiant Next] brings in two more Valiant characters: Ninjak and Bloodshot. I haven't read either of these series, but they are on my must read list now because they are both sexy bad ass action heroes. Check out how Ninjak dispatches the two guards...
The Geomancer, Kay, is running for her life from The Immortal Enemy and guess who comes to the rescue? Bloodshot! I like the way the creators handled the artwork differently for Kay's flashbacks of a book her father read to her when she was young. Seems The Immortal Enemy knows your greatest fear and can become it.
This is a perfect series to pick up for an introduction to some of the more popular Valiant Comic series. If you have never been in a comic book store or know where one is, don't worry. You can get digital comics now and read them on your tablet. Plus the digital versions are cheaper.

ComiXology is a great place to find them (you can also find free comic books to check out too)

Well…that escalated quickly.

Quantum and Woody and Archer & Armstrong are riding the rails looking for the lost treasure of the Hobo King. Each armed with one half of a mysterious map, these two tandems have unwittingly been pitted against each other in a four-way free-for-all…but can either team get along long enough to achieve their mission? The world’s worst crossover joyride is about to enter uncharted territory!

Me with each new issue of The Delinquents

I heart Quantum & Woody comics. They are my kind of snarky "OMG did he just say that?" characters. The Delinquents is a four issue cross over with Valiant's other hit Archer & Armstrong, which I hadn't read before, but plan to from now on!

In issue #2 the two duos finally meet in their search for the ass map that will lead to the legendary hobo treasure. After some misunderstandings, drinking, an epic superhero/immortal/naive ninja assassin fight, and one flying goat, the guys decide to team up to to decode the ass map. There is no way to really describe the WTF-ery that goes on so I have included some pages. Unfortunately I don't have one with the goat wearing the Spell'n'Say he uses to communicate.

Character Court: Jennifer Harlow vs Det. Joanna Fallon

All Rise, the Hon. Judge Baaart Presiding

The Plaintiff: Det. Joanna Fallon, Galilee Falls P.D.
The Defendant: Jennifer Harlow, her creator

The Case
The Plaintiff had brought her creator on trial for the many, many trials and tribulations the defendant has made the plaintiff endure, not limited to but including: her alcoholic mother, the murder of her father, her attempted suicide, two decades of unrequited love, forcing her to become the target of an acid-spewing super villain and making her live in a city with the highest concentration of superheroes and villains in the world.

Judge Baaart: Let the bickering commence!

Jennifer Harlow: Your honor, I object to this entire proceeding! My whims and actions should not be questioned. She would not be here, in existence, without me. Who is she to summon me into court?

Judge: Need some help off that high horse, missy? Gonna throw some thunderbolts or a plague of locusts at us too? Haughty is not a good look on you, dear. You’re here now. You will answer the detective’s questions.

Harlow: [muttering under breath] I should so throw a thunderbolt at you. Douche.

Judge: I heard that.

Det. Joanna Fallon: [rising] Thank you, judge. Ms Harlow, I have just one question for you, then you may leave to ruin more lives. And don’t roll your eyes at me.

Harlow: [rolling eyes] The question?

Fallon: Why the hell are you so damn cruel? What the f*** did I ever do to you? What the hell do you have against me?

Harlow: The truth? [pause] Darlin’, you are my greatest damn creation. Don’t tell your sisters, Bea and Mona, but you are my favorite.

Fallon: [silence for a few seconds] Excuse me?

Harlow: Don’t get me wrong, I love your sisters. They’re a hell of a lot of fun to write, and I hope read, but with you… you let me run with my inner bitch. You don’t pretend to be nice. You say what’s on your mind, are true to yourself, and don’t take shit from anyone. But you’re flawed. So flawed and layered. Quite frankly, I didn't know I had you in me.

Fallon: Be that as it may, you still haven’t answered my question. Why are you so damn cruel to me? You took my father, gave me an abusive mother, then there’s Justin… you've made me love him for two decades when that love is not returned. You gave him Rebecca. Why not me? And to top it all off, I have a man who literally spews acid from his body gunning for me and I don’t know why. Can’t I have one, just one damn good thing in my life?

Harlow: Let’s take my so-called crimes one at a time, okay? Without the murder of your father, you never would have met Justin. You never would have wanted to become a police officer. Without that event, dozens of people would still be in abject misery because they never had Joanna Fallon to save them. Bring their villain to justice. Your mother, well…without her you never would have known what you didn't want to be like. She forced you to mature, survive in hostile environment. Tell me that hasn't served you well in life. And in the end, she brought you closer to Justin.

Fallon: Yeah. Justin. What’s your excuse for him and me? You made me fall in love with him at first sight. Twenty years. Twenty f***ing years of longing, and desiring him, then you create perfect Rebecca for him. Why?

Harlow: You think you’re the only one who’s ever experienced unrequited love? Happens to the best of us, sweetie darling. And it’s been my experience friendships can be a hell of a lot deeper than people believe. Soul mates don’t have to be the person you’re married to. But the truth is, I didn't want yours to be a traditional romance. I can’t think of another book that deals with unrequited love. Can you? And I did give you Harry. Do I get thanks for that? No! He may be your boss, and you may have to keep the relationship secret at present, but doesn't that just add to the fun? He’s a good man, better than Justin in many respects. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, sweetie.

Fallon: And Alkaline? You sent a psychopath who shoots acid from his body after me. That’s not a fair fight. How exactly am I supposed to fight against him?

Harlow: You want fair, read a children’s book. Watch a romantic comedy. And do you know how lucky you are? “Oh, brave new world that has such people in it.” You live in one that people in my realm would literally kill to live in. A world of miracles of evolution or God or whatever you believe in. People standing up for what’s right, even if they have to wear a mask to do so. Epic battles between living gods.

Fallon: One you've siced on me for no apparent reason on top of everything else. How—

Harlow: Look, I know I've thrown a lot at you. I do. And I will continue to, but I know you can take it. And you will take it with a gun in your hand and wise ass remark on your lips. I’m not promising you an easy path, or even a happy ending, but I do promise your life will never be boring and quite frankly, happiness is so damn hard to write because it is so freaking boring. Some people are happy riding on a merry-go-round. Little ups and downs but really you see the same thing over and over again. Don’t know about you but I prefer a roller coaster. So scary, so thrilling, it tests your mettle. You get more out of a roller coaster. So buckle up sweetie, and enjoy your highs, lows, and curves. And this is only the first chapter. You've got two more to go, and they will be just as wild and twisty. Curse me all you want, but it will be a hell of a ride. But let’s let the readers be the real judges, shall we? [The defendant rises] Now, unless you want that plague of locusts you mentioned which is totally within my power, I have to get back to work. More lives to ruin. And I’m due for margaritas with the muses. Ciao!

The defendant strolled out of the court, after blowing a kiss to the Judge, with a smug smile on her face.

Judge: Um…so, you, the readers, do you find the defendant’s justifications valid? Does this sound like a world you’d want to live in? Sound off below.

It’s hard being a regular police officer in Galilee Falls, a city with the highest concentration of superheroes and villains in the country. It’s even harder watching your best friend, the man you’re secretly in love with your whole life, planning to marry another woman. Detective Joanna Fallon has to contend with both. When the vilest supervillain in the city’s history, Alkaline, the former crime boss who can shoot acid from his wrists, escapes from the maximum security prison, the whole city is gripped by panic. Leading the pursuit is Captain Harry O’Hara, Joanna’s boss and secret lover, and the city’s champion superhero Justice, who caught the villain last time, much to Joanna’s chagrin. Before her father was murdered in a mugging twenty years earlier, Joanna worshiped the hero, but when he disappeared and failed to save her father, that adoration turned to contempt for all supers. After Alkaline attacks too close to home and targets Joanna as his next victim, tough-as-nail Joanna has to contend with her increasing fear while struggling to choose between her life-long crush and her new-found love.

At turns vulnerable and fierce, equally mordant and winsome, Joanna is an earnest yet emotionally damaged heroine, who despite the tough breaks of her childhood sees the good in people and vow to protect her beloved city at all costs. An ass-kicking petite firecracker with no superpowers of her own, she charges after supervillains unflinchingly, never losing her wit even when facing her toughest fight. With a coy blend of whimsy and vivid imagination, she delivers both humor and thrills in an action-packed and edgy blend of comic book cool, fantasy-noir, and bitter-sweet romance.
