Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy, and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

My husband, 20-year-old daughter, and I rented Black Widow last night. It is all things you expect to see in a Marvel movie. Big action scenes, car/motorcycle chases, hand-to-hand fighting with crazy moves, explosions! You got to have explosions. I wish we could have seen it on the big screen. But it was still enjoyable on our TV.
I liked learning about Black Widow's origin story. I don't know the comic book canon so I can't comment on any differences there. You get a little drama mixed in with some humor (why I love Marvel films) but the writing didn't quite meet the bar set by Phase 1 Marvel movies. But props to the writing team for making fun of the superhero landing.
I can't talk about the plot too much, but we do learn why Black Widow can take as much physical abuse as she does and still walk away like the other superpowered Avengers.

I am completely confused about all the different MCU phases and how they fit. Where the Phase 1 movies are pretty much a linear timeline, these new phases (movies and TV series) turn the timeline into a web. All the parts connecting to multiple movies. When I think about the scope it blows my mind!

Black Widow connects to the Disney TV series (Falcon and Winter Soldier) and leads into a future Hawkeye story and ultimately a Thunderbolts storyline which I had never heard of until I searched it. And I am down for that one!

There is an after-credits scene that shows the direction of this storyline.

Basically, if you love the Marvel movies, you'll love this.

  1. Thanks for reviewing Black Widow. I watched it on our TV too --- and I admit, I totally freaking LOVED it! Of course, I'm a Marvel megafan...
