Alchemy With Benefits Review
Witchy klutz Estele Esposito just can’t seem to master her craft. Bumbling through sorcery training, Estele seems to bounce from crisis to crisis without any real direction. But when a catastrophic crisis lands in Estele’s lap, she’s forced to focus so she may use her profound magical potential to save the world from certain demise. Helping to unlock her potential is sexy Brujo Valentine Del Toro, a literal culinary wizard, and food-truck operator. Together Estele and Valentine form an alliance to fight the “bubble of malevolence” brewing on the local fairgrounds. Oh, and trigger warning: there are clowns. Creepy as hell clowns.

This was my first Sorcery by the Sea read. It seems to be an adequate stand alone; I didn’t feel lost in the storyline. Alchemy with Benefits is a light, charming little story. Despite the dire circumstances facing the main characters, the tone of the tale leans more towards comedy and charisma than anything over serious. At times, however, I found the comedic tone incongruous with the plot. Estele is quirky and disarming, but a little too insecure and self-deprecating. Valentine, however, exudes confidence and self-assuredness. Together, they make an almost too adorable pair.

I love that Valentine is a food wizard; who wouldn’t want a hot lover who’s also gifted in the kitchen? Leon’s description of tastes, food preparation, and presentation are unparalleled. I enjoyed learning about some of the inner workings of Latin food. I can’t say the same about some of the more mundane aspects of the book. The dialogue is a bit stilted and awkward; an odd mixture of eloquent, perfect grammar and common colloquialisms.

Overall, a light action-packed paranormal-rom-com to round out my summer reads.

Katalina Leon
I’m an artist, an author, mother and wife. I write for Ellora’s Cave, Loose Id Publishing and a couple new publishers to be announced soon. I try to bring a touch of the mystical and a big sense of adventure to everything I write because I believe there’s a bold, kick-ass heroine inside all of us who wants to take a wild ride with a strong worthy hero.
