Book Review: Rogue Souls (A Soul Charmer Novel, Book 2) by Chelsea Mueller

Get ready for more magic, murder, and rented souls in the Soul Charmer series, which Booklist calls a "fresh take" on urban fantasy.

Callie Delgado volunteered to apprentice to Gem City's Soul Charmer. He'd forced the soul magic ability into her, but now it was hers. She'd learn to control her body's reaction to rented souls or go up in flames. Literally.

She exchanged her chance to escape the darker side of Gem City to save her brother. Now she needs to keep him sober and safe, try to mend family ties, and avoid the mobsters who have too much interest in the magic of borrowing souls.

But when bodies begin dropping at the Soul Charmer's door, it's up to Callie and her partner Derek to track down the person killing soul renters. The Charmer wants retribution, but Callie is determined to get justice even if it means putting herself directly in the sights of the murderer.

If she wants to stay on the Soul Charmer's good side, Callie must confront her enemies head-on and learn to command rogue souls...and hope someone she loves doesn't become the next victim.

As much as Callie wants to cut ties with the Soul Charmer, now just isn’t the time. Derek and Callie are shocked when bodies start showing up at the Soul Charmer’s door and the only way to get justice for those that were killed is to find out who is responsible. Callie hopes that if they can find out who the murderer is, the Soul Charmer will go for good.

The second book in the Soul Charmer series delves a little deeper into Callie and Derek’s personal lives, which was something missing from the first book. One of the best highlights of the story was getting to know more about soul renting, how it works, who can do it and where the souls come from. I was so happy to get some of my questions answered from the first book. The story held my attention, tied up some loose ends which I was grateful for. This is a series I will continue to read that you do not want to pass up.

Callie Delgado always puts family first, and unfortunately her brother knows it. She’s emptied her savings, lost work, and spilled countless tears trying to keep him out of trouble, but now he’s in deeper than ever, and his debt is on Callie’s head. She’s given a choice: do some dirty work for the mob, or have her brother returned to her in tiny pieces.

Renting souls is big business for the religious population of Gem City. Those looking to take part in immoral—or even illegal—activity can borrow someone else’s soul, for a price, and sin without consequence.

To save her brother, Callie needs a borrowed soul, but she doesn’t have anywhere near the money to pay for it. The slimy Soul Charmer is willing to barter, but accepting his offer will force Callie into a dangerous world of magic she isn’t ready for.

With the help of the guarded but undeniably attractive Derek—whose allegiance to the Charmer wavers as his connection to Callie grows—she’ll have to walk a tight line, avoid pissing off the bad guys, all while struggling to determine what her loyalty to her family’s really worth.

Losing her brother isn’t an option. Losing her soul? Maybe.

Callie has always stood up for her family and put their needs before hers no matter the cost. Her brother Josh, is in constant need of money and now he’s in debt to the mafia and Callie is forced to work to get him released. Callie must rent a soul to accomplish the task the mob wants her to do but at what cost to her own soul? She’s willing to do anything to help her brother though and entangles herself in the dirty world of borrowed souls.

The magnetism between Callie and Derek quickly draws the two into a relationship. Derek has her back but Callie doesn’t trust herself much and doubts him even more which causes her more heartache than necessary. Callie’s family leaves a lot to be desired and a little more background into them would have added an element to the story that was needed. There was enough given that you could instantly form an opinion, but hinted secrets needed more investigation. The story was original and pulls you in quickly which is something I really desire in a good read. The Soul Keeper needed more of a backstory, little was said about him, which made it hard to really picture him and what he was. Last but not least, almost nothing was said about Derek, one of the main characters, except that he worked for the Soul Keeper, was trustworthy and hot. All in all though, worth the time and I look forward to book 2, Rouge Souls.
