Halloween/Days of the Dead tour- Author Gail Z. Martin talks Costumes, Candy, and Characters

Costumes, Candy, and Characters
By Gail Z. Martin

I love to see creative costumes at Halloween, especially the off-beat, homemade ones. A boy once came to our door wearing a table (completely with tablecloth) that had a big serving dish on top. When he lifted up the lid, his own head—with plenty of gory makeup so it looked severed—lay on a plate. He definitely got extra chocolate for that!

The most adventurous I ever got was dressing up as a Roaring Twenties flapper when I was in graduate school. At the time, the town had an amazing costume rental store!

That got me thinking about what the characters in my series would wear if they went trick-or-treating or to a costume ball.

For the medieval series (Chronicles of the Necromancer, Fallen Kings Cycle, Ascendant Kings Saga, Assassins of Landria), ‘costumes’ are usually disguises, used to help collect information or avoid being arrested. In peacetime, the characters might have attended a costume ball, but the stories are set during times of upheaval, so elegant events need to wait until order has been restored. The same is true of the characters in our Wasteland Marshals near-future, post-apocalyptic series. For Jake Desmet and his friends from our steampunk series, going to a costume party would probably mean dressing up like historical figures or characters from books.

In the modern-day stories (Deadly Curiosities, Night Vigil, Spells Salt and Steel, and Joe Mack), it’s fun to think about how the characters might approach Halloween and what costumes they might consider.

My Deadly Curiosities crew would have fun with the concept. They use magic and psychic skills to stop the things that go bump in the night, but they wouldn’t hesitate to decorate Trifles and Folly, Cassidy’s antique shop, for the season, or give out candy.

I can definitely imagine Cassidy, Teag and their friends dressing up on Halloween as the cast of Buffy, knowing that most people won’t get the in-joke that Cassidy and her team really do fight monsters.

Sorren, the nearly 600 year-old vampire who is Cassidy’s business partner, wouldn’t pick a Bela Lugosi costume. He’d be more likely to dress like the real European nobility he mingled with hundreds of years ago.

Travis and Brent from the Night Vigil might take the easy costume choice of dressing like the Winchesters from Supernatural, since they also fight demons. Or they could go as characters from The Walking Dead, because they’ve dealt with more than their share of zombies as well. If they felt particularly sarcastic, Travis still has his old suits and clerical collar shirts from when he was a priest, and Brent could do a dark suit and fedora as a private eye.

If Mark Wjocik from the Spells, Salt, and Steel series went to a bar that threw a Halloween bash, he could be a zombie hunter (since he hunts monsters in real life) and pay homage to Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead which were filmed not far from his corner of Pennsylvania.

Joe Mack, who is immortal after being brought back from the dead by a Slavic god in the late 1800s, could pick from any of the eras of his long life. I think he might favor dressing up like Eliot Ness from the 1920s.

One thing I’m sure of—they all like Halloween candy and would never turn down chocolate!

annual Days of the Dead blog tour: The Appeal of Anthologies By Gail Z. Martin + giveaway

The Appeal of Anthologies

By Gail Z. Martin

This year, I've had stories in six anthologies that released during this year, and one slated for a Kickstarter to come out next year. Some anthologies pay well, while others pay in author copies and non-tangibles. What's the appeal of anthologies, and why do authors do them?

I've been in over 40 US and UK anthologies. Some won reviewer acclaim, while others passed largely unnoticed. All of the anthologies I've been invited to participate in tend to be created around a central theme, which shapes the sort of stories that fit the prompt. That's part of what makes it fun and challenging, especially when the concept pushes you out of your comfort zone.

The first anthology I did scared me to death. I was used to writing thick epic fantasy, so the (seemingly) tiny short story word count boggled my mind. But I took the challenge and wrote a story I was very proud of, one that, oddly enough, more than ten years later, became the jumping off point in two separate series that weren't even conceived of when the original story was written.

Anthologies can open doors. My Deadly Curiosities series grew out of a short story for an anthology that the editor liked enough to offer me a contract for books in the same world. Since I learned that I could write a satisfying story, I gained the confidence to participate in many different anthologies with a who's-who of well-known authors, and made friends with new editors and fellow writers.

Once a short story from an anthology reverts back to the author, it can be sold to another anthology, used as a newsletter-builder hook, expanded into a longer work, or sold individually. I've done all of those things, depending on the situation, and found that stories that tie into my book series make wonderful 'appetizers' to encourage new readers to try out my worlds.

Sometimes, you do an anthology just for the fun of the prompt, or because one of your writing idols is part of the project, or because a friend asks you. In other cases, it's for the challenge of stretching outside safe territory, or to play with a new concept. And anthologies can also be a great way for readers to meet new authors without the 'commitment' of a whole book.

I've had a diverse slate of anthologies this year. Release the Virgins came about because of a conversation in a hotel bar at a convention with a table full of writers, an editor and a publisher. Someone said, "Release the virgins!" Someone else said, "That sounds like an anthology!" And yet another person said, "I'd publish that." And we were off and running. Every story had to include that phrase, but there were no other rules. We ended up with a fine slate of tales.

Legends is the third David Gemmell tribute anthology and required dark, maybe even grimdark, fiction. Tales from the Old Black Ambulance, a horror anthology, had to have a hearse somewhere in each story. Hath No Fury, a somewhat ill-fated anthology that survived publisher woes and arrived a couple of years late, persevered and ended up being a fine collection. Across the Universe (due at the end of the year), presents stories that envision what might have happened to the 'four lads from Liverpool' had the Beatles not become rock gods. Christmas at the Castle is a romantic suspense collection with stories by various authors all set in the same fictitious English castle. I'm working with a wide range of fellow contributors in those anthologies, and my stories tie into three different series (and one story doesn't tie into anything else). Give them a try--I hope you'll find them to be as much fun to read as they were to write!

genre: epic fantasy, sword and sorcery
206 pages
First in the new Assassins of Landria series from the award-winning, bestselling author of Scourge: A Novel of Darkhurst, and the Chronicles Of The Necromancer books!

Friends since their orphanage childhood, Joel “Ridge” Breckinridge and Garrett “Rett” Kennard rose through the ranks of the Landrian army together, from teenaged conscripts to seasoned fighters. Together, they became the most feared team of assassins in Landria, surviving longer that most in their profession by virtue of excellent fighting skills, legendary bravado, peerless strategy, and an uncanny synchronicity. Henri, their long-suffering squire, tends to the thankless jobs of provisioning and logistics, while Ridge and Rett fight and recover.

When wandering mystic Yefim Makary becomes the darling of disenchanted aristocrats, Rett and Ridge fear Makary—or the Witch Lord, as his followers call him—is a threat to the crown. As treasonous whispers spread, Ridge and Rett go rogue to stop the threat, save the kingdom and protect the king—while landing on the “Most Wanted” list themselves!

Assassin’s Honor

Assassin’s Honor – Chapter One (Excerpt)

He rolled the warrant up and tucked it into Destwiler’s bloody vest, a formality. Ridge bent down to search Destwiler’s pockets, curling his lip at the still-warm blood that soaked the shoulders and sleeves of the man’s coat. He found a parchment note tucked beneath the vest and took it to read later, figuring that anything Destwiler found important enough to carry on his person bore looking at closely.

“Are you stealing from him?” Kelvin asked, still eying Ridge with a mixture of fear and awe.

Ridge replied without looking up. “I’m trying to find the keys to those manacles, because I sure as hell don’t want to have to carry you and them out of here, and we need to leave.” He took the iron key off the strap and then stood and crossed the distance to where Kelvin huddled against the wall.

He stared at Ridge in wide-eyed apprehension, unsure what to make of his terrifying rescuer. His wrists were badly bruised from the weight of the iron, and the mark on his cheek suggested Destwiler or his guard had backhanded the child at least once.

“I’m here to take you back to your father,” Ridge said quietly, approaching Kelvin as he would a spooked horse. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

“Are you a Shadow Killer?” Kelvin’s tone shifted, still frightened but clearly intrigued.

Ridge had always hated that term—he argued that it made it sound like they killed shadows.

How #HoldOnToTheLight Happened - Gail Martin Day of the Dead tour

How #HoldOnToTheLight Happened

What happens when 100+ Sci-Fi/Fantasy authors join the conversation about depression, suicide, anxiety, PTSD and self-harm? A world-wide blog campaign called #HoldOnToTheLight, that’s what.

#HoldOnToTheLight was inspired by #AKF #AlwaysKeepFighting, a campaign from the Supernatural TV show fandom (http://www.supernaturalwiki.com/index.php?title=Always_Keep_Fighting) I’m especially thrilled to see the #SPNFamily Crisis Support Network creating a fandom-based peer counseling training opportunity http://www.randomacts.org/programs/crisis-support-network/ (Yeah, I’m a huge fan of the show.) As Bobby Singer said, “Family don’t end with blood.” In other words, your true family is the one you gather around yourself.

#AlwaysKeepFighting #AKF showed the reach media stars have when they talk about issues, and I wondered what would happen if genre authors opened a similar conversation. I recruited my usual partners in crime—John Hartness, Misty Massey, Jaym Gates, Jean Marie Ward, Emily Leverett and my husband, Larry N. Martin—as the steering committee, and we started asking our colleagues and author friends to join us.

We asked authors to talk about how depression, suicide, PTSD, anxiety, self-harm or other mental health issues had affected them, their characters, their books or the worlds they created. What happened next is extraordinary. We not only had more than 100 authors agree to participate, but the blog posts they have written are heartfelt, candid, and life-changing.

We believe fandom should be supportive, welcoming and inclusive, in the long tradition of fandom taking care of its own. We encourage readers and fans to seek the help they or their loved ones need without shame or embarrassment.

This past summer, ConCarolinas added a panel on coping with mental illness. The panelists were either authors who were medical professionals and/or authors who had personal experience with depression, etc. Not only was the panel standing room only, it ran over, and spawned a Facebook group. That’s one reason #HoldOnToTheLight is reaching out to convention organizers to encourage adding, promoting and expanding programming on mental wellness issues. ConCarolinas, Atomacon, Capricon, GenCon, Imaginarium and ContraFlow are all planning new panels, and we hope more cons will join in.
