Book Review: Dragonsworn (Dark-Hunters #28) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Dragonsworn (Dark-Hunters #28)
by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Hardcover, 352 pages
August 1st 2017

There is nothing in the universe the cursed dragon, Falcyn, hates more than humanity . . . and in particular, Greek humans. In a war he wanted no part of, they systematically destroyed everything he’d ever cared for. Now he lies in seclusion, away from the world and waits for the day when evolution will finally rid him of the human vermin.

Medea was born the granddaughter of the Greek god Apollo, and among the first of his people that he cursed to die. But she will not let anyone rule her life. Not even her notorious grandfather. And when Apollo sends a new plague to destroy what remains of her people, she refuses to standby and watch him take everything she loves from her again.

This time, she knows of a secret weapon that can stop the ancient god and his army of demons. Once and for all. However, said device is in the hands of a dragon who wants nothing to do with politics, the gods, humanity, demons or Greek Apollites. And especially not her. He is the immovable object.

My enemy’s enemy . . .

When Apollo makes a strategic move that backfires, he forces Falcyn back into play. Now Medea either has the weapon she needs to save her people, or she’s unleashed total Armageddon. If she can’t find some way to control the dragon before it’s too late, Falcyn will be an even worse plague on the world than the one Apollo has set loose. But how can anyone control a demonic dragon whose sole birthright is total destruction?

Falcyn hates humans and wants nothing to do with them. He really hates most people and doesn't trust many, but he has a right to feel the way he does. Most everyone is scared of him because he's a bloodthirsty dragon shifter and if you make him mad, he'll just eat you and be done with it.

Medea is the granddaughter of the Greek god Apollo, but gramps wants her, and her Apollite family, to die. He isn't a sweet old loving grandpa but more like a monster with demon minions who wants her destroyed.

This book starts off with a twist right from the very first few pages. Something that Falcyn never saw coming and something that would change him and his life. Things he thought true would prove to be false, but I like twists like that, they make stories interesting and fun to watch how the characters will react to them. It also turns out that Falcyn has something that Medea needs to stop her grandfather from destroying everything she loves, now if only she can get Falcyn to help her. Not as easy as it seems because he wants nothing to do with any of it at first but when they get stuck in a place together and need to find a way home, they get closer even though neither of them is good at trusting anyone.

Both Falcyn and Medea have felt the pain of loss, the sting of betrayal and it has turned their hearts cold, but they're both after something now, and they may need each other’s help to get it. These two characters were so good together. They both were a lot like each other, and the banter between them is so much fun to watch. Falcyn is surprised that she isn't scared of him or his dragon and he likes how strong, brave and bloodthirsty she is.

If you've been reading this series from the beginning like I have, then you know that we usually get a lot of insight into the main characters as well as secondary characters. There are usually a few shocking twists or secrets that come to light, and this book is no exception. In fact, the last couple of pages pretty much let us know that big secrets are about to be revealed most likely in the next book. I can't wait to see how this plays out. If you haven't been reading this series and you like Greek mythology, Greek gods, demons, dragons, bear shifters, curses, great bloody battles ect...then you're really missing out. But I would start with the first book and work your way up otherwise these people just won't make much sense. This is a great series, and this book was a fantastic addition to it.

I give this book 5 out of 5 sheep!

Book Review: Born of Vengeance (The League: Nemesis Rising #10) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

by Sherrilyn Kenyon
February 7th 2017
by St. Martin's Press
Hardcover, 406 pages
A fate worse than death . . .

Bastien Cabarro survived the brutal slaughter of his entire family only to have his wife pin their murders on him. Made Ravin by The League, he is now a target for their assassins-in-training to hunt and kill. The average life expectancy for such beings is six weeks. But defying the odds is what this Gyron Force officer does best, and Bastien won’t rest until he lays his betrayers in their graves.

Ten years later, he has one chance to balance the scales of justice, provided he relies on his former wingman— the very sister of the woman who testified against him.

Major Ember Wyldestarrin joined the outlaw Tavali the day Kirovar fell into the hands of a tyrant, and she and her team were left on an outpost to die under a barrage of enemy fire. The last thing she wants is to be involved in politics again. But if she doesn’t bring Bastien in, her sister will pay the ultimate price. Now she has to find some way to betray her former wingman (and fiance) before he catches on and kills her. Even so, treachery doesn’t come easy to a woman who took a loyalty oath to protect her homeworld and comrades-in-arms.

Yet as she tries to do right by her family, she learns that Bastien doesn’t just hold the key to the fate of Kirovar, he is vital to The Sentella-League war, and to the entire Tavali nation. If she hands him over, three nations fall. If she doesn’t, her entire family dies. Their fates are all in her hands, and time for all of them is quickly running out.

Bastien Cabarro is the only survivor of his family. They were brutally slaughtered and Bastien’s wife pinned the murders on him. Bastien is then made Ravin by The League, basically he’s target practice for assassins in training. Normally, the targets only last six weeks but Bastien is a survivor and ten years later has the perfect opportunity to get vengeance on those who betrayed him, except to do that he has to work with his former wingman Major Ember Wyldestarrin, who also happens to be the sister of the woman who testified against him. Ember on the other hand has been tasked with bringing Bastien in or else her entire family dies.

I’ve been a longtime fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s books but I also admit I’ve slacked off on The League series so I wanted to see if it is possible to just jump into this series midway and not get lost.

The answer is yes but there’s a price to being able to be read Born in Vengeance as a standalone in a series this far in. Especially if you haven’t missed a book.

Kenyon is a superb storyteller there’s no denying that, but I can’t help feel like in an effort to attract new fans, she’s letting longtime fans down by spending too much time rehashing the events of the previous books so that new fans won’t feel lost. Because of that, the quality of Born in Vengeance wasn’t all that impressive to me. There was less new content for readers to enjoy. I may have missed out on a few books in this series but I certainly recognized events from the first few books that I did read. I wanted and expected a brand new story, not a retelling of the series with a few new scenes here and there. There was also quite a bit of back and forth timeline jumping that I could have done without.

To be fair though, Bastien and Ember were two interesting characters. I always love to see a female character in a role that men would normally occupy. Ember is a fighter, she’s a leader, not a follower and I loved that. She was a strong character who wasn’t without faults but still managed to convince me to believe in her. The same with Bastien, he was a broken, angry man but I believed in him. I wanted him to get his revenge (Yes, I’m bloodthirsty that way). I just wish that Born in Vengeance focused more on Bastien and Ember than playing catch up.

All in all Born in Vengeance wasn’t a bad book if you’re new to Kenyon. However it was a bit of a letdown for me as a longtime fan and I have talked to other fans who felt the same way. I hope that Ms. Kenyon’s next book will remember her established fan base because then she can get back to that high quality of writing I remember from her earlier books.

Book Review: Dragonbane: A Dark Hunter Novel Book #19 by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Dragonbane (Dark-Hunter #19)
by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Hardcover, 320 pages
August 4th 2015
by St. Martin's Press
Out of all the mysterious boarders who call Sanctuary home, no one is more antisocial or withdrawn than Maxis Drago. But then, it’s hard to blend in with the modern world when you have a fifty foot wingspan.

Centuries ago, he was cursed by an enemy who swore to see him fall. An enemy who took everything from him and left him forever secluded.

But Fate is a bitch, with a wicked sense of humor. And when she throws old enemies together and threatens the wife he thought had died centuries ago, he comes back with a vengeance. Modern day New Orleans has become a battleground for the oldest of evils. And two dragons will hold the line, or go down in flames.

Intriguing story line with strong characters. Maxis and Seraphina were fated a very long time ago which was a cruel joke by the fates. Maxis is an original dragon and Seraphina is an Amazon who prides herself on how many dragons she has killed. Thousands of years ago, Seraphina turned on Maxis and allowed her tribe to subject him to horrible torture that almost killed him. Maxis vowed to leave and never return to her even though it meant a life of celibacy for himself. When Seraphina turns up at Sanctuary looking for Max, he is more than surprised to see her.

The Dark Hunter series has been a favorite of mine for years. If you’ve never read the books I highly recommend taking the time to invest in an awesome series! Book 19 tells the story of the original dragons, how the Arcadians and Katagari’s were created and why the hatred exists between the groups. Now this wasn’t a typical dark hunter novel but was more focused on the other characters and species that exist in this world then on the dark hunters and their stories. It answered a lot of questions that have lingered throughout the years.

Book Review: Born of Defiance (The League #9) by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Born of Defiance (The League: Nemesis Rising Book 9)
by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Hardcover, 688 pages
Published May 12th 2015

by St. Martin's Press
Born an Outcast, Talyn Batur has spent the whole of his life fighting against the prejudice of his people. An Andarion without a father is not something anyone wants to be.

But when his companion’s brother draws him into a plot against the Andarion crown, he finds himself torn between the loyalty to their planetary government that his mother has beaten into him and his own beliefs of justice and right.

Now, he must decide for himself to remain a pawn of their government or to defy everything and everyone he’s ever known to stand up to tyranny. It’s a gamble that will either save his life or end it. And when old enemies align with new ones, it’s more than just his own life at risk. And more than just his homeworld that will end should he fail.

Talyn is the non-Vested bastard son of an Outcast Andarion male. His only choice as a Vested-less male is to join the military. Trying to rise in the ranks, he fights in the Ring, and became the first of a non-Vested bastard to fight in the Ring only Vested make are allowed to, and becoming champion. But he has problems, as the new commander, who happens to also be a member of the current royalty ruling the planet and took over his squadron, appears to hate him and makes his life in the military horrible. Even to go as far as changing his times to come back to base and making him late and even AWOL, so much on paper he seems so bad he cannot transfer to another squadron or base. Knowing he can never mate with an Andarion female or have a family, Talyn contracts for a companion, Felicia Orfanos. Virginal Half-Vest though a bastard, her father allowing her to know his lineage, though it limited her careers and choices, still, she had it better than Talyn, and is able to go to medical school.

As love grow between the two of them, Talyn finds himself torn between the Andarion government and his beliefs in justice, as Felicia’s half brother pulls him into a plot against the government. A government that is tyrannical and even involved with their enemies. He must make the right choice, as it not only involves survival of his world, but others, but also Felicia’s life too.

I’ve read the earlier books that began this romantic science fiction series. This one is the best so far, even with some plot holes. The tortured hero is still there and the sex too, but it is more a science fiction story with action. I can see the world and the people in it. Still, a few plot holes. Such as Fain not knowing he had a son and able to abandon Talyn’s mother, Galene and him. Not paid for his fights (goes to his manager) and yet rich enough to buy the condo and pay Felicia’s schooling. Those and the couple others are why I won’t give the highest rating I can for what is a well-written book.

Need to get away from real life? Born of Defiance will do that for you, transporting you to alien worlds. So just say "Beam me up.” next time you’re at the bookstore, library, or searching an online store, and grab the novel.

MystiCon 2012 + Give Away

By: Sharon Stogner
Co-Founder & Media Relations

I had the pleasure of spending a day at the second annual MystiCon - a family friendly convention by the fans for the fans of Sci-fi, horror and fantasy in the beautiful mountains of Roanoke, VA. I got to meet New York Times best-selling author Sherrilyn Kenyon, actor Richard Hatch, author Stephen Zimmer of Seventh Star Press and authors Sapphire Phelan (AKA Pamela Kinney) and Alethea Kontis along with many other artists, writers and publishers. And let's not forgot all the fans dressed up and ready for action! The icing on the cake...there was a real working Delek!
I have lots of pictures and links to some of the awesome people I met. Baaart had a good time too. He will have his own post later on to tell you about who he met...

Meeting author Sherrilyn Kenyon was a highlight. The mastermind behind the award winning Dark-Hunter and Lords of Avalon series plus graphic novels Sword of Darkness and Knight of Darkness. Sherrilyn was very popular and the long line only enforced her large follwoing, but once you got your turn she spent as much time with the fans as you wanted. She was extremely personable and quiet funny. It was worth the wait. And she also happened to love our mascot Baaart.

I was excited to meet author Stephen Zimmer of Seventh Star Press who has worked with I Smell Sheep to promote the small press. His enthusiasm for SSP and all its authors is infectious. SSP uses the talents of artists Matthew Perry and Bonnie Wasson to illustrate their books. Stephen graciously gave me many sets of glossy post cards featuring the art from some of the books. They are gorgeous! And I am sure the Cheerwine I brought him had nothing to do with him handing over all that swag <G>. I will be giving away a set of these at the end.

Is this Pamela or Sapphire and what is she doing to Baaart!?

Pamela Kinney (AKA Sapphire Phelan) As Pamela she has written two non-fiction books about ghost stories in Virginia called Haunted Richmond, Virginia and Haunted Virginia: Legends, Myths and True Tales from Schiffer Books . As her alter-ego Sapphire, she writes in the romance genre about aliens, werewolves, vampires, fairies, including other supernatural and otherworldly heroes & heroines. I have a signed CD copy of her romance novel To Teach an Ancient God to give away.

I also talked with author Alethia Kontis. Her highly anticipated debut Young Adult fairy tale Enchanted hits shelfs this May. What a lovely person and she wears a tiara, pretty much a win in my book <G>. She has also published some children's picture books and The Dark-Hunter Companion with Sherrilyn Kenyon. You can find her: website-FB-twitter

I briefly chatted with actor Richard Hatch who acted on Battlestar Galactica, Murder, She Wrote, T.J. Hooker, Dynasty and MacGyver just to name a few. I was Team Apollo back in the day.

There were a few independent film makers like
The Adrenalin Group and Mad Ones Films

I want to give shout outs to some of the people I met:

a paranormal investigation team in Virginia. They do free and professional investigations. They are now offering Haunted Retreats where you can be a guest investigator!

Intervention 2012 (Sept 21-23)
This “internet convention” is meant to Intervene and Inspire the whole family to embrace Technology, Digital Media, and the potential of the Internet in order to make a better world.

Beck Kramer
A wonderful sketch artist.

I met my first Delek. It was quite noisy.

And last but not least, there was one zombie, who came with me. My teenage daughter Ren making her second appearance as
The Con Prom Zombie.

Baaart will be posting his pictures very soon.
In the meantime I have a few things to give away:

*set of 40 amazing Seventh Star Press artwork cards
*CD of Sapphire Phelan's To Teach an Ancient God
*signed card + button from Sherrilyn Kenyon
*small book of Beck Kramer sketches
*various swag
*moon pie and Kool-Aid

1. Leave a way to contact you
2. Tell me what you would like to dress up as for a Con...

Contest ends March 7th at midnight. DOUBLE entries for followers!
