Book Review: Blood Lust (The Sentinels #3) by Alexandra Ivy

Blood Lust (The Sentinels #3)
by Alexandra Ivy
May 31st 2016
Paperback, 352 pages
Blessed and cursed by their hidden abilities, the Sentinels have no choice but to live, and love, on the edge of humanity…

The Sentinel assassin, Bas, is facing the greatest challenge of his outcast existence. His young daughter, Molly, has been kidnapped. But her disappearance has brought the return of her mother, Myst, whom Bas has never forgotten--or forgiven.

Haunted by a vision that she's destined to create a weapon that will destroy thousands, Myst was never impulsive--until she met the irresistibly handsome Bas. But with the Brotherhood, the enemy of the high-bloods hunting for her, Myst had to stay on the run, to keep her child, and the world, safe. Now, with the most important thing in both their lives at stake, she and Bas must embark on a treacherous journey to save Molly, to confront the truth of Myst's fate--and to face their fierce desire for one another.

Okay, so if you’ve been keeping up with The Sentinals series then you know that Bas is a high blood who doesn’t follow the rules; he makes them. His onetime hookup with a woman known as Myst resulted in a daughter named Molly that Bas had to raise alone after Myst dropped her on his doorstep as an infant. Now Myst has returned to spend time with their daughter and hopefully avoid the vision she’s been haunted by, a vision that says she will create a weapon that will destroy the world.

Okay, so Bas was the leader of a shadow society of high bloods who don’t want to follow the rules that were created to keep them and the humans safe. That has disaster written all over it right? Well yeah, almost from the start Blood Lust dropped me into total chaos with Bas and Myst reuniting and reluctantly calling a truce to their hostilities in order to deal with a bigger problem and in the process they get their hands all over each other again, cause you know, one time wasn’t enough for these two.

I loved the tension between these two so much because it was so well done. There was tons of unfinished business between them, yet they had to prioritize their needs against their daughter’s. Bas wasn’t used to having someone like Myst stand up to him because, hello High Blood Assassin, but it was entertaining to watch them clash. Bas needed to be put in his place because as sexy as this guy was, he was arrogant and dismissive of anyone that wasn’t him or his daughter. Of course part of Bas’ charm was his dry sense of humor that would pop up at unusual times.

Myst didn’t exactly lack in the humor department either. She was more than capable of matching Bas’ sarcasm with a few snarky responses that sometimes caught him off guard. I’m so glad that Alexandra Ivy paired the very alpha Bas with the iron willed Myst because he would have stomped all over a lesser female. Where Bas was the physical strength, Myst was the intellectual strength and I loved that balance between them. That’s not to say Myst was a slouch at fighting because she wasn’t, she just had different methods. She was definitely one of those characters who made the best out of a bad situation but she’s been a loner for most of her life so connecting with others was new to her and I loved watching her learn that there were people she could count on.

There’s always something going on in an Ivy book and Blood Lust was no exception. The main story is of course Bas and Myst’s journey to find out how to stop her vision from coming true but there’s also the accompanying story (and budding… something) of Lana, otherwise known as the Mave, aka the leader of the high bloods and Wolfe, the leader of the Sentinals. He seems to be the only one not intimidated by her power and there’s an attraction between them for sure.

Really though, I loved how Bas went from despicable in the previous book, to reluctant and totally likable hero in this one. Ivy took his one positive quality which was his love for his daughter and used it as a stepping stone towards redeeming this dangerous, selfish, and cold character and I loved every step of the way. Bas and Myst weren’t the easiest couple but they are one of the most fun. The push and pull between them and the fun of watching them find their feet while co-parenting their daughter was worth the wait.

Sheep Book Review: Blood Assassin by Alexandra Ivy

Blood Assassin (The Sentinels Series Book 2)
By: Alexandra Ivy
Paranormal Romance
Pages: 433

Plot:
They are the outcasts of humanity. Blessed with power. Cursed by fate. Driven by passion. The Sentinels have returned. . .
Out Of The Shadows
At six-foot-three and two-hundred-fifty pounds, Fane is a natural born guardian. A flawless mix of muscled perfection and steely precision, he has devoted years of his life to protecting a beautiful necromancer. But after she found love in the arms of another, Fane has been a warrior adrift. He swears allegiance only to the Sentinels. And no woman will ever rule his heart again. . .
Into The Fire
Not only a powerful psychic, Serra is that rare telepath who can connect to minds through objects. When the daughter of a high-blood businessman is kidnapped, Serra agrees to help. But when she stumbles onto a conspiracy involving secrets sects and ancient relics, her life is in mortal danger--and Fane is her only hope. Is the warrior willing to risk his body, his soul, and his heart, for Serra? Or will one last betrayal destroy them both?

I've enjoyed Ivy's writing style over the years. She knows how to serve up sexy alpha men like the pro she is. After reading the plot description above, I was a little disappointed with the details. I get the short info is meant to draw the reader in BUT it's not really all that accurate. Serra never found love with another, the whole point of the story is how she has ALWAYS pined after Fane. To the point of obsession.

Fane is also not her "only hope". Fane feels obligated to help Serra cause he's a stand up dude. But yes, they do eventually get a HEA though it takes a while to get there. The fire between Fane and Serra is there for sure, what's lacking is the believability. It was hard to believe that Serra would have ended up getting forced to track down a missing child. It was hard to believe that when it's all said and done, the people behind the attack seem like amateur hack jobs.

For immortal folks who are supposed to have some major magic and abilities, I found it really frustrating that they couldn't handle this a lot quicker. I would have really enjoyed a more devious plot, with sinister twists and layers of deception. Instead, it was a little too transparent for my tastes.

Seems like a harsh review thus far and for that I am sorry. Being honest can come across that way sometimes, but I genuinely look forward to reading Ivy's books. I'm not going to hold this one against her in any fashion. I'm not even going to mind the redundancy of words and phrases she uses over and over again. I can even overlook the choppy bits, because the heart and writing of the story is entertaining!

I'm eagerly awaiting the next book in this series and I absolutely encourage all my PNR lovers to give this one a read!

Book Review (ARC) Born in Blood by Alexandra Ivy

Born In Blood (The Sentinels)
By: Alexandra Ivy
Paranormal Romance
Release Date: December 31, 2013

In The Heart Of Darkness
Sergeant Duncan O'Conner has seen it all before. Beautiful erotic dancer, murdered at home, no suspect, no motive. But there's one clue: she's missing her heart. It's enough to make the hard-bitten Kansas City cop enlist the help of a necro--one of the dead-channelling freaks who live in the domed city of nearby Valhalla. It's a long shot, but desperate crimes call for desparate measures.

Lies The Kiss Of Death
Unlike the other "high-bloods" in Valhalla, Callie Brown considers her abilities a gift, not a curse. But when she reads the dancer's final thoughts, she senses a powerful presence blocking her vision. This is no ordinary homicide. This is the work of a legendary necromancer who controls souls. A ravenous force that will put Callie's skills to the test, O'Conner's career at risk, and both their hearts on the line. . .literally.

Alexandra Ivy starts a new paranormal series for readers to feast on. From the first chapter, I was both entertained and intrigued by the world that's being created. Valhalla is not just for Thor (though he is the best looking), but witches, seers and some amazing new characters that are monk-like. There's a lot here to like and it's backed with a solid story to help you dive right in.

Our lead pair team up to fan the flames of love and passion. The human cop falls for the immortal necromancer. I was a little on the fence about these two, but by the end I did get invested. There's believability stacked on top of all the drama, which helped to give the story it's momentum. Plus the secondary characters are already standing out as ones I want to read up on.

Set all this to the scene of a murder-mystery and back stabbing, this adventure takes you for a walk on the dark side. Evil is afoot and it's clearly a major player in the coming series.

I see tons of potential for this saga and will most definitely keep enjoying the ride!
