Book Review: Don't Blackmail the Vampire (Sons of Kane Novels) by Tiffany Allee book tour + giveaway

DON'T BLACKMAIL THE VAMPIRE
A Sons of Kane Novel, Book Two

by Tiffany Allee
Genre: Light Paranormal Romance
Print Length: 156 pages
Publisher: Entangled: Covet

Rachel Davis will do anything to get her sister out of a bad relationship with her fiancé. Even if it involves a few fibs, a little breaking-and-entering, and blackmailing the fiancé's potential boss, Charles, for his help. So what if the handsome Charles happens to be a vampire?

Charles Wright has found the perfect way to trap the man threatening his brother's wife: cozy up to him, get invited along on the skiing trip, and then search for incriminating evidence. How much better that audacious but gorgeous Rachel is just as eager to nail the bastard. As far as he's concerned, there's nothing wrong with a little blackmail between two consenting adults. Especially when it's time for Rachel to pay up.

Don't Blackmail the Vampire is book two in the Sons of Kane series and is a lighthearted enjoyable read that introduces us to Rachel and Charles. Rachel's sister is currently engaged and Rachel has vowed to do everything in her power to get her sister to see what a rotten apple her fiance is. Charles is pursuing him as well posing as a potential big-buck employer believing he is responsible for threats being made against his brother's wife. Stepping out for a breath of air, hoping to relieve some of the frustration of the evening with the couple, Rachel inadvertently finds out that Charles is a vampire and blackmails him into helping her unmask the fiance not realizing this is a common goal and off we go.

The book is fun, if a bit formulaic with few surprises for the reader, other than perhaps the lack of surprise on Rachel's part when discovering Charles is a vampire. This is a little unbelievable, but we are reading fiction here and not every story needs to be a deep dark tale full of twisty turns and trauma. Don't Blackmail the Vampire takes us back to the short reads that are just right for an afternoon of light reading entertainment. It is well written and although there is really nothing new, other than adding the vampire twist to the formula, it is a good little read with likable characters and some tasteful sensually written smexy thrown into the mix. I would recommend this book for the adult reader who is interested in a paranormal romance on the lighter side. I received this book with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.

Excerpt
“Getting your sister free of him is important to you.”

Charles’s scent seemed to fit the mountain. Woodsy and natural, yet somehow smoother than the real nature surrounding them. She wanted to lean in just to inhale more of his smell, breathe him into her lungs. Just barely, she resisted. “Yes.”

“Then I’ll help you.”

A thank-you was on her tongue, but she bit it back. He’d already agreed to help her, right? But somehow, this promise felt more real. Solid.

“Good,” she murmured, staring at his chest.

His finger slid under her chin, and he tilted her face up.

Icy blue eyes met hers, and her skin tingled where he touched her. It didn’t seem like she should be able to see the color so clearly under a single, half-snow-covered lamppost, but she was able to, just barely. A woman could drown in eyes like that. Especially a woman who wasn’t used to swimming.

A tiny part of her mind told her to look away. That danger lay ahead. But she couldn’t seem to drag her gaze from his. Was unable to summon her normal defenses.

His hand slid up to cup her cheek, and he leaned closer. His mouth only a breath away from hers, he murmured, “I swear to it.”

Then his lips touched hers, so softly. A sizzle of recognition arced through her body, and a need coiled inside of her. Then just as quickly, he stepped back. She could have almost convinced herself she’d imagined the press of his lips against hers, if not for the slow, clear wink he gave her.

She touched her lips, unable to form a thought, let alone speak one aloud.

With vampire speed, he was gone.

Visions of death haunt her . . .

Ava Keller sees the future. When she suffers a horrifying vision of a man's violent death, she knows from experience nothing she does will stop it from becoming a reality. But when she meets a strong, broken man, he makes her want to believe in second chances.

Vengeance consumes him . . .

Tortured by his past, Karson has worked tirelessly to wreak vengeance on the demons who murdered his family. But when Ava inadvertently disrupts his intricate plan for revenge, his focus shifts to an all-consuming need to keep her alive and in his arms.

Love could save their souls . . .

Thrown together by fate, Ava and Karson explore their new feelings and discover hope for the future. But they must battle the demons threatening humanity to find a destiny worthy of their love.

Excerpt, Ava’s POV:
“So who are these Venators? Are they like some sort of demon-hunting organization?” I asked

“They’re like a need-to-know organization,” Karson said.

“I haven’t held anything back from you.”

He shrugged and his hand dropped from my shoulder. “I’m trying to help you. That doesn’t give you the right to know everything about me.”

I opened my mouth to argue but he held a hand up, and his index finger touched my lips. The gesture was meant to shut me up, and it worked. In that moment every thought flew from my head. There was only him. The intense look in his eyes. The roughness of his skin on my mouth.

The immediate need that curled in my stomach.

What would it be like to be with a man like him? Rough and wild and freaking amazing, that was my bet. My body ached to find out. The rest of me knew better.

“You need to hide for a while. Then you can go back to your normal life. Promise me.”

With a quick jerk of my head, I promised.

Tension flowed out of him visibly, and a small smile touched his lips. “Good.”

And if I hadn’t already convinced myself that he was probably right, that laying low couldn’t hurt, his next words would have.

“Please don’t go back on your promise. Don’t make me watch them kill you.”

Visions of death haunt her . . .

Ava Keller sees the future. When she suffers a horrifying vision of a man's violent death, she knows from experience nothing she does will stop it from becoming a reality. But when she meets a strong, broken man, he makes her want to believe in second chances.

Vengeance consumes him . . .

Love could save their souls . . .

Thrown together by fate, Ava and Karson explore their new feelings and discover hope for the future. But they must battle the demons threatening humanity to find a destiny worthy of their love.

Vet tech, Ava has what she calls a curse. She can't touch anyone without seeing visions and sometimes the visions are of their death. Her only friend, Miriam knows about her curse and tries to understand and help but will be leaving for medical school soon.

When Karson's family was killed by a demon he left his humanity behind and trained to become a Venator (Demon Hunter). He wants revenge on the demon who killed his family and does what he has to in order to kill the demons who possess humans.

I found the story of the venators to be intriguing. They use the blood from the living humans who have been possessed by the demons to make the tattoos. The blood in the tattoos make them powerful enough to fight the demons. The venators also use runes painted in blood to ward off demons and while reading that I was reminded of the show, Supernatural because Sam and Dean use runes and symbols painted in blood for the same reasons.

The demons in this books are scary, gruesome beasts who get off on torture, pain and fear. They steal energy, feed off the energy of their victims. That's not scary at all. *shivers*

The sexual tension between Karson and Ava was insane. Every time I thought they were going to get down and do the deed, something stopped them. It's like the author was teasing us readers, knowing that all this start and stop passion would keep us on the edge of our seats. But it was well worth the wait. The sex scenes are hot and sweet and not 'G' rated at all, which I really liked.

They have to work together to save an innocent victim and that gets tricky when Karson comes face to face with the demon who killed his family.

If you like demons, demon hunters, boat loads of action, magical tattoos, exorcisms, mythical magical necklaces, and a love story that uncovers the redemption, emotional scars and a love found...then this is the book for you.

I give this book 5 sheep
