Excerpt: The Quest for Freedom (The Conquest Trilogy Book 1) by Matthew Devitt + giveaway

One man against the world

The Quest for Freedom (The Conquest Trilogy Book 1)
by Matthew Devitt
Oct 17, 2025
Genre: Dark Epic Fantasy, Action, Adventure
Affer was once a peaceful planet, until a war broke out between its six inhabiting species. The humans, who were once the mightiest force on Affer, were massacred in droves, and the ones who survived the onslaught were reduced to mere slaves. The five other species divided the humans amongst themselves and returned to their respective kingdoms.

The years passed, turning into decades and centuries, without any change. Eventually, the humans had accepted their fate as slaves. All except one. Four hundred and seventy-three years later, Fletcher Rush starts his journey to free his kind...and conquer the planet.

Excerpt:
"Death is a part of freedom. Blood will be spilled whether we fight this war or stand down and stay as slaves. I'm trying to put humans back at the top where we belong. It's all I've ever thought about…freedom and victory. My only purpose in life is to rectify the disposition of this damn world, and I'll do whatever it takes to do that." - Fletcher Rush

“They should be here any minute,” Fletcher muttered.

They’d managed to take care of all the preparations Fletcher had planned, and now he was standing on the city wall by the main gate along with Ji.

“I’m surprised we finished everything,” Ji said, glancing across the field in front of them.

“Me too,” Fletcher admitted. “I think we have a good chance to win this fight.”

“We either win or we die,” Ji said, shuddering after he said it out loud.

“Or they capture us and enslave or torture us.”

“Not helping.”

“Just fight like your life depends on it, because it kind of does,” Fletcher said, casting his gaze out to the path.

“What if they don’t come?” Ji asked.

“Trust me, they’ll come. I might not have confirmation, but based off what that elf said, and Light’s temper, I would bet my life on them attacking.”

The two didn't say anything after that; instead, they just kept watch. The light breeze swayed the leaves and small branches of the many trees that dotted their vision. It had grown quite dark and was hard to see, but Fletcher and Ji still saw the dirt kicking up from the large convoy of vehicles headed toward them.

“Looks like that’s the elves,” Ji said, pulling out an arrow and notching it in his crossbow.

“This should be fun,” Fletcher said, taking the remote control from his pocket and getting ready to use it.

The vehicles got closer and the two saw truck after truck approach, stretching out as far as they could see, each of them packed with bloodthirsty elves.

“Hey, Ji, no matter the outcome of the battle, I just want to say thanks. I wouldn’t be here today without your help,” Fletcher said, turning to his friend.

“Don’t be getting sappy on me now, man,” Ji said, giving Fletcher a light shove. “But seriously, I feel the same… Thanks, Fletcher.”

The car in the lead started closing in and the two of them saw it had a large metal ram built on the front of it.

"Fuck, I think they're going to ram into the gate," Fletcher said, turning to the inside of the city where two dozen soldiers were waiting. "GET READY FOR THE FIRST TRUCK, AND DON'T LIGHT THE OIL UNTIL I GIVE THE ORDER!"

Fletcher turned back to look at the approaching army just before the truck slammed into the main gate. The gate exploded, sending splinters of wood flying in every direction and shaking the strong stone walls.

“Damn—” Fletcher said, getting thrown to the ground by the impact. He got up and looked at the inside of the city. Elves were already rushing out of the vehicle, drawing their weapons before advancing forward.

"I'LL HEAD DOWN!" Ji shouted, shooting off an arrow before he dropped the crossbow and ran down the stairs.

Fletcher turned his attention back toward the convoy that was approaching very fast.

“Wait…” Fletcher softly muttered to himself, his finger resting on the trigger to the makeshift bombs.

The sound of the engines grew louder as the cars neared the city, none of them slowing down in the slightest.

Just a bit more…

“SEE YOU, MOTHERFUCKERS!” Fletcher shouted as he pressed the button, causing the bombs to go off.

The ground ripped apart as the explosions detonated, making contact with the trucks milliseconds later and blowing them to hell.

A fire quickly took over the front lawn of the city as the explosions mixed with the gasoline in the vehicles’ fuel tanks. Over two dozen trucks were obliterated, another five had caught on fire, and the pathway had been completely destroyed. The cars that weren't affected by the blast stopped in their tracks, and the one in the front got rear-ended after stopping so fast, making Fletcher smile.

There are limitless possibilities when you're writing, but with fantasy, it's different. You don't have to adhere to rules or logic; you can create whatever type of world you want. Characters can live in a dystopian society, a grand futuristic city, a picture-perfect world, or a medieval wasteland. Time, technology, and magic are all there for the taking, and as a writer, you get to choose what defines your story.

Genre: Dark Epic Fantasy/ LGBTQ2+ Rep
“This dazzling epic fantasy is packed with memorable characters in black, white, and gray.” — BookLife Reviews

On the verge of adulthood, Roslyn's dreams are simple: Marry Jon and become a healer.

But on the world of Perdinok, the capture of the Church of Deagar by hate-filled fanatics puts Roslyn and all other followers of the blue God Karulus at risk. Soon, soldiers arrive to assassinate Roslyn's mentor and priest. Dreaded Silthex knights lock eight hundred of Roslyn's fellow villagers in the local inn--intending to burn them alive. Roslyn must act quickly and grow up quickly.

Years later, having become the legendary resistance leader known as the Blue Rose and an ambassador rallying forces against the repressive Empire, Roslyn is given another assignment: Find out how Chaos energy has been allowed to leak into Perdinok from the Plane of Chaos.

Now, on the slopes of Mount Triumph, Roslyn must call upon all her skills as an Azerent Mage to wrest truth from the twisted temptations and taunts that spew from the mouth of the devious Harpy that she has called up from the Nightmare Realm. Unless she can distill the tint of truth contained in the Harpy's obscure prophecy of doom, her very planet may be at risk.

Excerpt
She kept walking, continuing unhurriedly down the thin dirt road through the dark woodlands. Her legs ached from the extensive journey, yet she could not risk a carriage driver knowing her destination. Nocturnal insects provided the only sound she’d heard in hours. A hooded cloak, long and forest green, hid all that she was. The constant need to hide had become a crucial necessity.

For over a decade, the Church of Déagar had stood as the one and only legal church within the Dayigan Empire. The worship of God Karulus, her God and savior, was punishable by death.

Nevertheless, Roslyn would not bow.

And so it came to be that, on this cool early spring night of her thirty-second year, she arrived in the shadowy yard of a moonlit cabin.

She knocked five times on the simple wooden door and waited five seconds. She knocked twice more.

A square panel at eye level opened within the door, and a young man peered out. “Bit late, innit, miss? Who may I ask is calling?”

She drew back her hood, showing a thin face with delicate features. Sadness lingered in the blue of her eyes and a frown crossed her lips. Her hair, dirty blond in both color and state, hung limp, retreating into her cloak.

“My name is Roslyn.” Even as she talked to him, she did not meet his gaze. Instead, she kept her eyes, as well as her head, lowered, as was proper. “I’ve come to sail the Veiled River. Will you allow me passage?”

“Sorry, miss. If such a river did exist, ’twould be unsafe to travel.” He began to close the panel.

“But yet, I have my ticket here.” She removed a folded note from a purse on her belt and held it to the hole.

The man pulled in the page and closed the panel door, leaving her in dark silence.

Roslyn waited. As nervous as she was, she remained calm. In the unlikely event that she was being watched, the observer should see nothing but an unsuspicious woman at an unsuspicious door. Luckily—or sadly—she’d had much practice in this sort of thing.

Finally, the door opened and the same young man showed her in. “Welcome to Port Lytel, miss. Lord Karhelm will see you.”

By flickering candlelight, he led Roslyn down a slight, tight hall.

“In here, miss.” He opened a final door, but did not enter with her.

This room was better lit. A fireplace cast a glow supplemented by a tin candelabra on a simple table. Its tallow candles streamed thick lines of black smoke.

A tall, well-built man in his mid-thirties stood in the center of the room.

Even as Roslyn entered, his face gave no sign of salutation.

“I was told you wished to see me, my lord,” she said, keeping her head at a downward tilt.

“You are the Azerent Mage sent by Father Hanugfrie.”

“Azerent Master Healer, my lord. I primarily perform the magic of my specialty and have taken a vow to do no harm. But I trained under Father Hanugfrie for three years and studied at Azerent College for five. Afterwards, I served God Karulus as a healer in multiple ports, during which time I received accolades for skill and merit from both the Order of Azerents and the Karulent Church. Also, I received multiple awards from the Veiled River Commission for bravery as a healer and as an evacuation coordinator, both under life-threatening conditions. I am pleased to join your port, and I know I will be an asset to your team.”

“Quite a mouthful.” He paused without expression and looked her up and down. “At least your appearance is adequate,” he said. “They warned me you’d be a woman. You should know, I find it obscene. A woman casting magic.”

“The Déagrians would say the same of all who practice magic.”

He crossed his arms. “I assume that was meant to be humorous. It wasn’t.”

“Actually, I meant it to be accurate, which it was.”

“Regardless, you are here. Let us hope God Karulus keeps you strong, for in this desperate time, we have no other choice than to utilize your gifts.”

“My thanks, my lord, for allowing me to serve our God.”

“I prefer that you call me Lieutenant.”

“An army rank? You are a soldier?”

“Once, at twenty, I was an honored Dayigan soldier with a royal commission and on my way to commanding thousands. But in an hour, I became a despised criminal. I continue to use the rank to remember that the world can change in a moment. You’d do well to remember the same.”

“Lessons I’ve learnt quite well on my own, Lieutenant.”

Excerpt: Blood Magic (Realm Wardens Series Book 1) by Bobbi Schemerhorn + giveaway

Where were you born/grew up at?
I was born in Dartmouth Nova Scotia, but only spent about six months there before my parents were moved to Jakarta, Indonesia. We lived there for a little over a year before returning home to Canada and moved to Edmonton, Alberta. Edmonton and the surrounding area is where I spent most my life.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
There are still days when I have a hard time thinking of myself as a writer. I think like most of us I suffer a bit from imposter’s syndrome. So I have to remind myself that this is who I am.

But that first moment when I thought myself a writer was when I sold a book to a complete stranger for the first time.

It was my first book signing at a small book store in my home town. A complete stranger came up to me asked me about the book that I was selling and what it was about. We talked for about ten minutes and I honestly didn’t think she was going to buy it. Then she shocked me, she grabbed not just the first book in the series I was promoting at the signing but all four of the books. She paid for them and asked me to sign them.

When she walked away, I thought, yup, I made it. I’m a writer. That was in 2018, six years after I started writing full time.

Do you have a favorite movie?
I have a few movies that I can continue to go back to. They are Practical Magic, Real Genius, and Battle LA.

Where did you come up with the names in the story?
Most of them I used a fantasy name generator site. I would choose something I like the sound of and google it. If I found I got too many hits with that name I would fiddle with the letters to make it a bit different. Sometimes it would work out well other times I would just scrape it and start over.

Who designed your book covers?
I have used the same graphic artist for all my covers, Streetlight Graphics. Usually when I talk to Glendon, the man in charge, I will have a general idea of what I’m looking for, I will tell him the genre and a bit about the story. Then Glendon and his wonderful team would take it and run.

We tried several different ideas for the Realm Warden covers, but everything I had in my head just wasn’t coming out right. So we opted for simplicity.

Blood Magic (Realm Wardens Series Book 1)
by Bobbi Schemerhorn
July 27, 2019
Genre: Dark Epic Fantasy
Can an ex-warrior, lost soul, and thief stop magic from falling into the wrong hands?

Dufin an ex-warrior dwarf now a mine working botanist, finds peace and purpose in his gardens with his flowers. But he is pulled away from his serenity by his king. An important package must be taken to the High Kingdom.

A mission he shouldn’t do on his own.

Enya, a human raised by dwarfs struggles with fitting in. Loved by the dwarf mother who raised her, but despised by the dwarf she longed to call father.
Jardeth, a thief too sophisticated for the brothel he was found in. A roamer, traveller happy to go where possible treasures may lie. His true intentions carefully concealed from those closest to him.

What does the package they carry contain? Will it throw the world into chaos or is it a peaceful gesture between two kingdoms?

Excerpt One
“Shadow creatures? Ha!” Enya shook her head as she attempted to lean against a lamp pole. “I’m surprised at you, Master Warrior, believing such tales. They’re just horror stories parents tell their naughty children to keep them in line.”

“Aire ye armed or no’?”

“Urm...” She patted herself down and smiled when her hand hit something solid in her pocket. She pulled out a flask and lifted it to her ear. The sound of sloshing liquid put a wide grin on her face. “I am, indeed, Rusty-McRust-Rust.” She twisted off the cap and drunkenly lifted the flask to her lips, puckering as it got closer, as if in anticipation of a kiss.

Dufin slapped the flask from her hand and replaced it with a dagger. He wasn’t keen on having to do battle that night but was ready if need be.

Enya wobbled and looked at the knife like she had never seen one before. She opened her mouth to speak when a flutter of movement caught her attention out of the corner of her eye, between two tiny buildings across the street. The stores were closed, and had been for hours, so it made it difficult to get a good look.

“Did you see that?” She asked as she seemed to steady herself. “Hey,” she shouted towards the two buildings.

“Come, lass,” Dufin said pulling her with him. “We’re not equipped tae fight shadow creatures.”

As the words dropped from his mouth a darkness pulled away from the building down the street. The foul smell of sulphur filled their noses. The figure was hunched and appeared to be dragging its leg behind it. The only sound it made was of the limb scrapping along the cobblestone.

Dufin squared his shoulders, he was a master warrior not a coward. Outmatched and ill equipped, it mattered not, he would not run. Enya stepped up beside him, solid and seemingly sober. She faced the dark walkway between the buildings where the movement first caught her eye. The scraping grew louder and Dufin gripped his blade tighter. He cared not that no one believed him about the shadow creatures. With his own eyes he had seen the unworldly beasts tear his beloved to pieces before disappearing back into shadow.
