Starring Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace, Lockout is set in the near future and follows a falsely convicted ex-government agent (Pearce), whose one chance at obtaining freedom lies in the dangerous mission of rescuing the President's daughter (Grace) from rioting convicts at an outer space maximum-security prison. Lockout was directed by Stephen St. Leger and James Mather from their script co-written with Luc Besson, who is also a producer. Peter Stormare co-stars.

This was an entertaining movie as long as you didn’t look closely at the plot holes. It was action packed and I absolutely loved the character Snow; his snarky bad ass attitude coupled with rugged good looks makes him fun to watch and I think he would translate well to the graphic novel genre. The president’s daughter, Snow’s reluctant side kick, is a bit cliché. ...Okay, really cliché relative to her storyline, dialogue and looks, but she is very pretty. The bad guys, um…pretty much the same. There were two other notable characters I enjoyed. Shaw, (Lennie James) is Snow’s inside man. Shaw is helping  Snow avenge his friend's death that he is unjustly accused of. Langral (Peter Stormare), is the guy you will love to hate. Great casting and good acting all around.

see pretty cliche

The movie has gotten some flak for poor CGI effects. There was one scene in the beginning that was so poorly done you couldn’t miss it, but it is just the one. All the other special effects were fine and there is plenty of blow’em up going on to keep action junkies happy.

see crazy convict cliche
The hardest part of this film for me to look past was the plot holes. I spent most of the movie saying “why don’t they just do this…”. The one that bothers me the most happens in the first 10 minutes of the movie and the whole reason behind Snow being falsely accused of murdering his friend.  All they  had to do was perform one ballistics test, and everything would have been cleared up.

I would wait for this to come out on DVD. It is worth a rental just to enjoy Snow’s character and the plot twist at the end that I wasn’t expecting. Then you can have fun picking the rest of the movie apart.

  1. Thanks for the review. I've been eyeing the trailers for this on the TV. And mostly it's the hero's attitude that grabs me -- love it! Will definitely rent this one.

  4. Solid review Sharon. Of course you get what you would expect from a B-grade sci-fi flick but it's still a lot of fun and the cast knows how to sell this type of material, as ridiculous as it may be. Guy Pearce also has a blast with this role and it's so great to see that from such a professional like him.

    1. I am drawn to plot holes and can't shake them! Going to the movies with me sucks cause I sit there and dissect the movie the whole time . Guess that is why I am such a good beta reader!

  6. This movie looks like so much fun; I am really interested in seeing it, especially since Guy Pearce has the lead role. My friend and co-worker from Dish, said I have to see this movie if I'm a Pearce fan. I believe the recommendation has something to do with the muscles Pearce is packing. Because I travel for work, I use Blockbuster @Home constantly to get Blu-rays whenever I’m preparing fro another trip; I love spending some time with the special features or even watch the movie again if I have long wait times at the airport.
