The Sheeps are Wild Event & GIVEAWAY!

Welcome to one half of Wild Sheep fun! We have partnered with 2012 RITA finalist Dani Harper to bring ewe so much sheep trivia and prizes ewe will be shaking with shear pleasure!

To be eligible for the give aways you have to enter at both blogs. So as soon as you are done entering our contest, head over to Dani’s blog and enter her contest too. Double the fun, double the pleasure!

Katie and I are going to educate you on the importance of Sheep/lambs in TV, movies, and books.

Sheep TV:
Today’s generation is probably familiar with Sean the Sheep. It is a British stop-motion animated children's TV show that first aired in the UK in March 2007. The show consists of 80 episodes in 2 seasons. Shaun made his first "official" appearance in Wallace & Gromit's A Close Shave . Sean is the leader of the Farmer’s flock. Sean and his best friend, a sheepdog named Bitzer, spend their days keeping the flock out of trouble. Timmy is Sean’s baby cousin and now he has his own pre schooler’s show called Timmy’s Time. These shows have sparked a revolution in sheeptastic promotion. Think Twilight but with wool.

The older crowd will remember Lamb Chop. Lamb Chop is a sock puppet sheep created by comedian and ventriloquist Shari Lewis in 1957. She is described as a feisty 6-year-old ewe. In 1992 Lamb Chop and Shari had their own PBS children's show, Lamb Chop's Play-Along that ran for 5 years. Sadly Shari Lewis died in 1998. Now I have never been a fan of puppets, they kind of freak me out, but Lambchop is a cutie

Sheep Movies:
Sean the Sheep has also been in the movies thrilling people of all ages, but he doesn’t hold a match (never hold a match around a sheep… they would light up like the Christmas tree in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and that would smell really bad) to the sheep in the movie Black Sheep (2006)

Growing up on the family sheep farm was idyllic for smart, sensitive Harry Olfield, except for some knavish mischief from cocky brother Angus, until their dad has a fatal accident. Fifteen years later, Harry has finished sheep-phobia therapy and his ICT schooling and returns. Angus buys him out, all ready to present the genetically engineered Oldfield sheep he bred with a ruthless team. When environmentalist Grant steals a discarded embryo, which has sharp teeth, he gets bitten by it, and thus the first the be infected with predatory hunger and a mechanism that turns any mammal into a werewolf version. Running for the farm men, Grant's mate, student Experience, gets teamed up with Harry and his boorish but gentle pastoral youth friend Tucker. They must survive both the bloodthirsty sheep and their creators, who didn't realize this yet but dispose of an antidote.

Did you read that? WERESHEEP people!!! It doesn’t get any better than this (wipes a tear from my eye).
in case you want to return the favor

Sheep in Books
Well, most sheep and lamb stories are in children’s books. Even though the main character in Babe, The Gallant Pig by Dick King-Smith isn’t a sheep, it is about a pig that wants to be a sheep hearder. The original title for the book was The Sheep Pig. Most people recognize this story from the movie Babe.

Another Sheep favorite is the rhyming thriller Sheep in a Jeep! "Beep! Beep! Sheep in a jeep on a hill that's steep." 5 sheep set out on road trip.

And how can we forget Living with Sheep: Everything You Need to Know to Raise Your Own Flock by Geoff Hansen and Chuck Wooste. 24 5star ratings can’t be wrong!

But where I think sheep truly shine is in the nursery rhymes. Who doesn’t remember singing Mary Had a Little Lamb or Baa Baa Black Sheep or wanted to be Little Bo Peep?
“Baa Baa Black Sheep” is a 250-year-old English nursery rhyme, sung to the tune of the 1761 French melody Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman. The same tune is used for "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and the "Alphabet song”

“Mary Had a Little Lamb” The nursery rhyme was first published as an original poem by Sarah Josepha Hale on May 24, 1830, and was inspired by an actual incident. Did you know there are 8 verses to this poem?! Me either…

“Little Bo Peep” The earliest printed version of the whole poem was in a version The Nursery Parnassus in 1810. There are actually 5 stanzas to this poem.
This has nothing to do with sheep, but since I wrote this post he stays!

Wise Sheep words:
“I don't do impersonations. I can do a wounded elephant! I can do a really good cow! And because of the amount of time I spent in North Yorkshire, I do a variety of sheep. All of which I will be happy to roll out for you! “Patrick Stewart

“The Lord can give, and the Lord can take away. I might be herding sheep next year.” Elvis Presley

“We were talking about the kissing in the movie just recently. Clearly, it's pretty challenging material, but Ang said two men herding sheep was far more sexual than two men having sex on screen.” Jake Gyllenhaal

"and so the lion fell in love with the lamb." Edward Cullen

this is for you Katie!

  2. *waving at Katie and Sharon* Loved seeing Shari Lewis and Lambchop again. Lambchop was a favorite of mine as a kid, and I nicknamed one of my daughters Lambchop! BTW, I just mailed a copy of Sheep in a Jeep to my granddaughter -- I learned about this book from I Smell Sheep!

  4. Awesome post! Sheep are cool. I so want to watch Black Sheep, and Shaun The Sheep has the catchiest opening theme. Whenever I hear it it gets stuck in my head, even though I haven't seen the show that much, because I'm totally mature and watch adult shows (so not true!). But I do love that it's a spinoff of Wallace and Gromit, I think we still have videos of that somewhere.
Thanks for the giveaway! I'd love to enter if it's open internationally.

  5. LOL! Loved it, Katie and Sharon! We quite liked the Sheep in a Jeep and related stories (Sheep in a Shop, Sheep out to Eat... ;)) and the kids love Shaun the Sheep! Lambchop was a cutie, I must agree... and I was always partial to the little fuzzy sheep in Sandra Boynton's stories--Moo Baa LaLaLa, for instance :D

  6. Well I am so glad that Optimus and Edward showed up for the party! I was actually surprised at how many of these I knew about - it actually made me feel like a sheeply wonder for a moment there; left me baaaaing out loud and trying to run my fingers through my wooly locks. I have to thank you for all the fun and sheeply sharing today. I do have to mention that I do not understand why the infamous legend of the Kool-aid drinking, moonpie munching sheep has not been told, after all we have the 2012 RITA finalist and the Queen of sheep duo here! Annnnd as memorable as Sean, the Marys, and little Bo are - we (sounds so much for royal than I) will cry out for Dani, Sharon, and Katie to make their mark in the telling of the legend of those who follow I Smell Sheep ;) Then again maybe this one should be put in a time capsule for viewing at a later day when it cannot incriminate any of . . . (you know who you are)

  18. Lol, I remember Lampchop and the song that never ends! Shaun was a favourite of mine from Wallace and Gromit! I wonder if the movie Black Sheep was partially inspired by a couple of the legends Dani dug up on her blog, namely the killer sheep Pysche had to get wool from and the killer sheep from the Irish legend!

  25. While totally fascinated with bloodthirsty sheep, it's Lambchop that rings my chimes, and Shari with the neverending song. I couldn't remember the exact words, so I looked them up:

This is the song that never ends,
It just goes on and on my friends,
Some people started singing it not knowing what it was
And they'll continue singing it forever just because ... (repeat)

  39. Sheep are adorable. I really like the black-face ones and the Merinos. However, I had to clean a sheep barn one summer, only to discover that I was deathly allergic to the adorable creatures. My face swelled up like a melon until I couldn't see! Apparently my body doesn't get along with the lanolin in the wool. :(
