Omega Days (Book 1)
by John L. Campbell
Release Date: May 6, 2014
Berkley Trade Paperback
When the end came, it came quickly. No one knew where or exactly when the Omega Virus started, but soon it was everywhere. And when the ones spreading it can’t die, no one stands a chance of surviving.

San Francisco, California. Father Xavier Church has spent his life ministering to unfortunate souls, but he has never witnessed horror like this. After he forsakes his vows in the most heartrending of ways, he watches helplessly as a zombie nun takes a bite out of a fellow priest’s face…

University of California, Berkeley. Skye Dennison is moving into her college dorm for the first time, simultaneously excited to be leaving the nest and terrified to be on her own. When her mother and father are eaten alive in front of her, she realizes the terror has just begun…

Alameda, California. Angie West made millions off her family’s reality gun show on the History Channel. But after she is cornered by the swarming undead, her knowledge of heavy artillery is called into play like never before…

Within weeks, the world is overrun by the walking dead. Only the quick and the smart, the strong and the determined, will survive—for now.

With non-stop action, gruesome scenes and a heartless style Omega Days is sure to shock even the hard core horror fans. When a mystery virus breaks out (much like the Walking Dead) the world is turned upside down in a matter of hours. The rich, poor, criminal and holy are all thrown together in a fight for their lives. There are rumors of save zones, military protection and redemption but as in all zombie books even those can’t save anyone.

The sheer heartlessness of the writing left me speechless (and I say this as a compliment). A young college girl watched both her parents be eaten alive and then not an hour later have her baby sister pried from her hands and cross over to the undead. A group of survivors comes across a baby abandoned in a car on the road. It’s starving, screaming, decaying…

“He looked at the silent metal graveyard all around them, and back at the thing struggling in the car seat.

This is the world.

Maya didn’t jump when the pistol went off.”

Death it’s self isn’t even an escape, bringing a whole new meaning to double tap! As well as avoiding herds (yes zombies are herd animals) they must avoid the deadly zombie virus. If you contract it you have 24 hours and a 50/50 chance of survival, which is if something doesn't eat you in that time.

No one is immune to the new world’s horror. Corrupt priest, maximum security prisoners, infants, the young and yes, even hippies are forced to work together. One error could spell the end (well sort of). The freaks/zombies/infected what have you begin to gather together (as in all of Los Angeles) and close in on their prey. There is no room for emotion, mothers must abandon their children, children their parents and families are ripped apart (literally)!

Campbell has a unique way of making you fall in love with certain characters only to have them fall into the hands of the undead or even worse; other survivors. Each chapter is guaranteed to make your heart race and his descriptions put you right there in the action.

The ending leaves much to question, and still nothing about the virus has been discovered. It leads you to believe that maybe a sequel is in the works (cross our fingers)? Sequel or not this is a must read for any horror guru and zombie fan alike.
