Prince of the Underworld and Lord of Fire, Ares was banished from his home by his father, Hades, two centuries ago and given a new duty and purpose—to keep our world and his from colliding in a calamity foreseen by the Moirai.
Together with his six brothers, he fights to defend the gates to the Underworld from daemons bent on breaching them and gaining entrance to that forbidden land, striving to protect his home from their dark influence. Caged by the manifestation of his power, held apart from those he loves by his own fire and starved of physical contact, Ares lives a cold existence driven by duty and the desire to return to his world.
Until his world collides with a daemon who steals his power and a mortal female who shatters the ice around his heart and awakens the true fire within him—a soul-stirring passion both dangerous and seductive.
Megan has wandered far from her home, driven from everyone she loves by the devastating realisation that she is different to them all. Unsure who to trust in the world, she keeps to herself, until a fateful stormy night brings a temptingly handsome warrior crashing into her life and into her heart—a warrior who seems to hold powers more frightening and marvellous than her own.
When the New York gate comes under threat, and Ares is put to the test, will he choose his duty and regain the power he needs in order to save his world or will he choose the desires of his heart and sacrifice his fire so he can be with the woman becoming his whole world?

Getting 4 sheep
Megan has spent 15 years being different and kept herself apart from others in fear they would find out that she was a healer. One night as she heads home she is caught between a fight between two men that are far from normal. Ares is one of a group of brothers from the Underworld tasked with protecting the gate between worlds.
I would have liked more history on the main characters of the story and at least a little back story on each of the brothers. Being the first book in this series, I would have expected more ground work to be laid out. We know that Megan can heal people and we know that Ares, is one of the many sons of Hades and Persephone, and is an immortal. He is over 900 years old, and has spent the last few centuries on Earth protecting the gate and killing daemons. Each brother has a unique power, Ares power is fire. He cannot touch anyone and sometimes anything without catching it on fire. What a lonely few centuries he has had. The author did a fantastic job on the sex scenes. They were full of passion and left you a little breathless.
We only got a sneak peek at a few of the other brothers and only know what Daimon’s power is. A little more information on the brothers would have helped increase the chance of readers waiting for future books. One thing that I did struggle with was that the author is from the UK and some items are called something different and I had to stop and look up words throughout the book to figure out what she was talking about. It didn’t deter me from the story but was a little distracting.
I look forward to the next book in the series that is due out next year.

Four SheepFelicity Heaton boasts an impressive resume. She has written several PNR series and last spring I had the opportunity to review Haunted by the King of Death (Eternal Mates #11). I found the book highly entertaining and immediately became a Heatonite – if that’s a thing. Ares is book one in Heaton’s newest series, Guardians of Hades. I have every intention of following this series throughout. I suspect there may be at least six more installments.
In Heaton’s urbanized take on Greek mythology, Hades has banished his seven sons from the Underworld until they have adequately dispatched some enigmatic threat prophesised by the fates. Each son is a guardian of a gate, dispersed throughout the globe. Each brother has unique traits and powers, but all pack scrumptious sex appeal to spare.
Ares is the guardian of the New York City gate, stationed in the middle of Central Park. Megan is a furtive young woman with a secret, living in the shadows. When Ares’ and Megan’s fates collide the two become profoundly linked. Ares’ power to wield fire has made intimacy an obstacle, and Megan’s mysterious power has made her a recluse. Given Ares is a 900-year-old god, and Megan is a mortal in her 30s, the two have loads to uncover. And while the two attempt to navigate the new territory of romance, a danger is on the horizon that threatens not only the pair, but all guardians, the mortal realm, and the underworld.
This book is a highly engaging, enjoyable read. It is quintessential paranormal romance done right. However, if you’re looking for something original, this ain’t it. You’re going to find that Ares is traditional fare for this genre. And, given it’s a series starter, there’s a lot of arduous setup in the first bit of the book. The descriptions of each brother, his appearance and attire was a little laboured. But I get it, the stage needs to be set for the series. Fans of Greek mythology will enjoy the premise of the series. This book is off the charts hot. If you prefer your reads on to chaste side, you’ve been warned. I like my books hot, so I greatly appreciate Heaton’s talent for well-crafted, highly descriptive sex scenes.
I predict the next installment in this series will revolve around Valen, the black-sheep son of Hades. He is edgy and bad-ass and I can’t wait. In any event, I look forward to rollout of this series.
