A Closer Look at the Characters from Immortal Descent by Carolyn M. Walker + giveaway

A Closer Look at the Characters from Immortal Descent

Carolyn M. Walker here! I’m happy to take you on a little tour of the main characters in the world of Immortal Descent. In my book, we hear the untold story of the Lorns—powerful immortal creatures who have walked the earth since antiquity. They have a lot of history and mysteries that are unearthed in my book! Today, we’ll learn more about the world my characters live in by looking at a few of my favorites.

Name: Ethan West
Age: 20-years old
Occupation: Painter/College Student
Ability: Sensory (unique to the wielder)
Snapshot: Ethan is perceptive and questions things around him. He is fascinated by the unexplained, which allows him to easier accept the shocking events happening around him. He tries to be easygoing, but his anxiety and paranoia sometimes makes that hard for him. At times he can be stubborn and impulsive. Ethan’s dark past and troubled childhood play a role in his fear of abandonment and betrayal.
Character Teaser: Later on, Ethan begins to suspect he’s being lied to, but he can’t put his finger on who or what exactly. Can friends really be trusted? Or is Ethan just paranoid?

Name: Ruenna Dawe (she likes to go by Rue)
Age: About 900 years
Role: The “second-in-command” to her Circle Leader Oryx
Ability: Telepathy (hearing others’ thoughts)
Snapshot: Rue is strong and wise. She is known as a “Reader” because of her ability. She helps Ethan as his protector, and eventually his mentor and confidante. As a very old and powerful Lorn, Rue is confident and keeps a level head in tough situations. She puts a lot of value in trust and honesty, and holds herself to very high ethical standards. Rue is determined and loyal to her cause, but she tends to carry the weight of her burdens inside, rarely letting her guard down long enough for people to see her own struggles.

Character Teaser: Rue has a black and white view of right and wrong at times, but this way of thinking isn’t always the best way…and it comes back to bite her later on.

Name: Archer
Age: About 590 years
Role: Combat Trainer
Ability: Concealment (stealth and invisibility)
Snapshot: Archer is steadfast and the team’s weapon’s expert, known as a “Concealer” for his superior stealth abilities. Archer is also highly skilled with more weapons than most people even know about! His personality is wary, gruff and cynical most times, but Archer is loyal and disciplined. His past is dark, and he doesn’t hide the fact that he’s not a people person. Archer is one of the best trainers and concealers in the world, but never boasts. Half Portuguese, half Irish, Archer is devilishly handsome and rates a 10 on the tall, dark, and sexy scale.
Character Teaser: From day one, Archer has a bone to pick with Ethan. Call it his tendency to “trust no one.” Their road to comradery is a challenging… and someone better prepare to get their hands dirty!

Name: Oryx
Age: 1,800+ years
Role: Leader of his Alliance Circle
Ability: Foresight (seeing the future)
Snapshot: Oryx is the oldest Lorn in his circle and the most mysterious. He is worldly and wise but very personable, said to have a perpetual grin on his face. He has a deep appreciation for history but is constantly reading the future, making him an expert strategist. Having seen and done a lot in his lifetime, Oryx has become desensitized to some of the risks around him. Each decision he makes weights heavily on his conscience making failure and uncertainty especially hard for him.
Character Teaser: Oryx’s past is long and secretive but there are some secrets that can’t stay hidden forever—even for a Lorn. And one of them is downright shocking when revealed later on.

Immortal Descent (The Immortal Series Book 1)
by Carolyn M. Walker4/3/2018
Book Genre: Adult Urban Fantasy
Publisher: Clean Reads / Astrea Press
Deep in the caves of rural Western Germany, the truth about immortality has remained a secret for centuries, but now that secret is about to break free...

Ethan West knows what it means to be different. With a haunted past and a strange sixth sense he sometimes can’t control, Ethan’s in search of a better future. Instead, he’s brutally attacked. Narrowly saved by the beautiful and mysterious Rue, Ethan quickly learns the world is darker and more bizarre than he had ever imagined. And sparing his life comes with a price: being reborn immortal. Now, a dark faction of ancient, cursed immortal beings known as Lorns are after him. And they want his rare, newly awakened soul.

Descended from the mythological Nephilim, Lorns are bound by either the divine force of order or the mortal force of chaos. Ethan is a rarity, bound by neither, yet he is ruled by both. Now, wielding an ancient and volatile power, Rue and her Alliance work to keep Ethan from spiraling out of control. At the heart of a terrifying underground war between Lorns, Ethan becomes the target of one side and a savior to the other. Amid everything, Ethan struggles to understand his own purpose and power—an ordeal that tests his loyalties, beliefs, and sanity in ways unimaginable. And the greatest danger is yet to come.

Excerpt:
The memory tore through him and had him shuddering on the couch. Ethan didn’t realize he was screaming until he felt Rue shaking him. His eyes flew open and he stared up at her face and into those bright silver eyes. For the briefest instant, all his fear melted away when he looked up at her. He remembered the shadowed eyes of the woman from the alleyway. These eyes were so different. Never had he seen eyes as hers before, so intense—so bright, so capturing. He held her gaze, almost afraid to look away. If he looked away, what would he see?

“Ethan, are you alright?” Rue asked in a quieter voice. It was soothing, so calming he couldn’t believe he hadn’t noticed it before. “Can you speak?” she asked. He shook his head and he felt the anxiety wheedle its way back into his mind. The attack.

How could he have forgotten all of that?

“The woman—no, that thing…she tried to kill me,” he whispered at last. He felt his heart continuing to speed up.

“It’s just the memory now,” Rue assured. “It’s not happening to you anymore.”

Despite her words, Ethan glanced around the room, still paranoid. He tried to quiet the quickened breaths, afraid the memory might become real again if he made a sound any louder than a sigh.

“Just a memory,” he repeated and took a deep breath. Rue nodded and placed a hand on his shoulder. He reached up and took hers in his, squeezing it. “So that’s what happened to me—what I couldn’t remember.”

As much as he wanted to deny it, he couldn’t refute what he’d just seen. He couldn’t explain it; he couldn’t justify it. All he could think of in that moment was it was all real. What he’d just seen in those memories had been real.

“The woman—what was she?” Ethan asked, still speaking just above a whisper.

“It was a Lorn.”

    1. Hi Madonna! I'm glad you liked the excerpt. I thought for a while on which one to include here on ISmellSheep! I wanted to show a moment when Ethan is fighting back tough memories of the attack that takes place at the beginning of the story. Ethan struggles both internally with what's going on as well as with what's happening around him. I thought this scene with Rue was a good choice! If you can, definitely check out Immortal Descent and keep on reading! Thank you for your comment!

    1. Thanks Victoria! I must say, I love it too! I wanted to show something that depicted the fragile yet uncertain keeper of time, surrounded by mystery. I say fragile because if you look closely, you can see the hourglass is cracked, the contents at risk of spilling out possibly. Hopefully, it's mysterious enough that you'll want to check out Immortal Descent for yourself! Thank you so much for your comment!
