National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)
Interview: Chad McLendon (Borris: A Gothic Tale - short story) + giveaway
What inspired you to write this book?
When I first wrote Borris, I was actually working third shift at a local grocery chain. I had many hours of the night where I would just be stocking the Spice & Baking aisle, and I would get to listen to Coast to Coast with George Noory, audiobooks, and all of the Iron Maiden albums. We would occasionally shut the store down, despite being open 24 hours, for floor maintenance. We would have our normal employee cleaners take the night off, and we would have a different set of cleaners come in (None of them foreign, but maybe one or two mustaches 😉), and they would lock the store up tight. They were kind of creepy, and the products they used did smell quite funky, old. It got me thinking, what would happen if something horrific happened while we were locked in? Obviously, we could just unlock the doors and leave, but what if we couldn’t? This is what gave birth to Borris, that and silly conversations with my friends Doug & Dallis. I think it was Doug that prompted the idea for the creepy eyes at the end-cap scene.

Excerpt: Dr. Cushing's Chamber of Horrors by Stephen D. Sullivan + giveaway
But, to the beast, his every footstep and rustle of clothing echoed like thunder. The man was slow, too, and he reeked of body odor and something the werewolf’s animal nature could barely identify—cologne, a terrible, unnatural stench.
Involuntarily, the wolf’s black lips curled away from its sharp teeth, and it nearly growled. But then it remembered itself. This was no ordinary man; this was its foe—the being it had been created to kill. And the beast knew instinctively that the man sought to destroy it, as well.
The werewolf feared nothing. The full moon beamed all her occult fury into its hairy frame. The preternatural animal could sense its own power, its own near invulnerability. All the world was its prey, and its talons and teeth were sharp enough to rend the flesh of any mortal.
And, yet, somehow, the monster knew that this man had the means to destroy it: weapons of silver—proof against even the supernatural power of the beast—and a gun loaded with silver bullets.
Reflexively, the wolf-thing clutched at its shoulder; blood still trickled there.
The creature’s memory was brief and blurry, but it remembered the man wounding it, not long after moonrise. They’d skirmished briefly, before the shot had rung out and the fire of silver tore through the monster’s shoulder.
The wolf had fled then, seeking the safety of the deeper woods, leaving the battered hunter amid the corpses of his hounds, which would track the beast no longer.
But the man had recovered, and it seemed he could track, too, though not as effectively as his dogs.
Nor as effectively as the wolf, for the monster had recovered, as well.
The silver-inflicted wound still stung it, but the bullet had passed cleanly through.
And the creature was strong—even when wounded—far stronger than any man.
The hunter moved quickly and nearly silently past the tree where the wolf lay waiting. The beast had hidden in the upper canopy, leaping from tree to tree, to avoid leaving a blood trail on the ground.
The wolf-thing was clever—more clever than the man, as well as stronger.
The time had come to prove it!
The monster sprang.
The hunter turned, as if sensing his peril at the last instant.
He raised his gun toward the werewolf’s slavering jaws.

Book Review: Daimon (Guardians of Hades Romance Series Book 6) by Felicity Heaton
by Felicity Heaton
genre: paranormal romance book
428 pages
Even when he’s sure it’s only a game to her.
Cassandra has a sword hanging over her, a duty she has no choice but to perform and one she’s been putting off for years. Her latest excuse? Helping a band of immortal brothers with a war that might mean the end of this world if they fail. Her delaying the inevitable has nothing to do with the gorgeous Greek god who keeps rebuffing her and everything to do with saving the world. He’s a nice distraction and nothing more. She keeps telling herself that.
Even when she’s sure he’s a danger to her heart.
As things heat up in the battle to save the mortal world and the Underworld, will Daimon’s icy heart be able to withstand the fiery witch who can scorch him with just a look?
If you love Greek gods romance books featuring powerful dark lords of the Underworld and strong heroines who steal their hearts, this paranormal romance series is for you.
Seven powerful Greek god heroes. Seven passionate paranormal romance books. No cliffhangers. Just happily forever afters!
Felicity Heaton’s HEA paranormal romance series Guardians of Hades chronicles the lives and loves of the seven sons of Hades. The sons have been banished from the underworld to stop a prophecy foretelling the destruction of the human world and beyond. Installment six tells the tale of Daimon, the god with a lethal icy touch, and Cassandra, the Russian sorceress who both tantalizes and torments him. Until he encounters Cass, Daimon’s life in the human world has been led in relative solitude. Wholly intrigued by the white-haired broody god, Cassandra is unrelenting in her pursuit of Daimon. It’s merely a matter of time before desires collide with explosive results.
Like other installments in this series, the romance in Daimon smolders against a backdrop of mortal danger. Still in pursuit of their nemesis, the wraith Eli, the brothers begin to unravel a plot bigger than initially suspected and potentially involving their long lost sister Calindria. The series is well-written with action-packed sequences and swoon-worthy romance. Daimon was an enjoyable read and fits nicely within the series.
Guardians of Hades is winding down. I’m satisfied with the series, but very much looking forward to the story of eldest brother Keras. The most deadly brother, and Hades’ heir apparent, has been teasing readers for the past few installments. The tale of his tumultuous, ill-fated affair with goddess warrior Enyo is guaranteed to entertain.

YA Urban Fantasy: True You 101 by TJ Eckhart + excerpt
True You 101

Genre: Urban Fantasy, YA, Teen, Coming of age
Publisher: Liminal Press
If one class during high school could help you become the person you were meant to be, would you take it? At the Reinholdt Institute of Sortilege Arts, sophomores are required to take True You 101 no matter whether they live in the mortal or magical realm. Over the course of a year, each student must confront all possibilities until their outer form matches their inner self. Blake Trudeau has always just wanted to be normal and hopes the class will make that a reality, but will the final spell conjure Blake’s fondest wishes or worst nightmares?
Chapter 1: Most Loved, Most Hated
In the mundane world of Collegiate Academy, where everyone in New York City thinks I go to school, Professor Russo’s course would be called Human Sexuality. Here at the Reinholdt Institute of Sortilege Arts, the course is called True You 101. It’s the most loved and hated course of the sophomore year.
I look at the textbook, similar to the school journals, because each copy will be blood-bound to one student. The magics we’ll be working with can track our progress, our changes, and our reactions on physical, emotional, and mystical levels. However, professors, tutors, and even administration can read it at any time. At the end of the course, the books erase and reset for the next year.
How do I know? I read all the materials my uncle gave me about this place at the end of eighth grade, when Grandmother informed me that I needed to leave the private school in Brooklyn and attend a magic school in Manhattan. My family taught me that the best way to keep a secret from the mortal world is to learn everything about it. I read, watch, and listen to everything I can get my hands on. I study things that not even my family knows about, and certainly not anyone at school. I once thought about telling Seb, but I’m worried that he’ll be afraid of me, as I am of myself most days. I’m grateful when the professor speaks up again, because it disrupts this distressing line of thought.

Book Reviews: Psychic Dreams: (Glimmer Lake Book 3) by Elizabeth Hunter
by Elizabeth Hunter
August 18, 2020
Pages: 298
Paranormal Women's Fiction with a bit of class, and a lot of sass, for anyone who feels like age is just a number!
She’s feeling the heat. Or it might be a hot flash. Sometimes it’s really hard to tell.
It’s been four years since Monica lost the love of her life to a sudden and devastating heart attack. She’s held her family together and picked herself up with the love and help of her two best friends. Now Monica has a new business, a new wardrobe, and a new vision for the future.
As in actual psychic visions. Dreams that manifest in reality? Monica’s still not sure why or how it happened, but she’s been seeing everything from unexpected visitors to visions of fire and destruction.
Separating premonitions from morbid imagination is proving harder than Monica expected, and no one can tell her if these new, violent visions will become a reality.
Added to that, there’s a new fire investigator in town, and he’s more than a little suspicious about the anonymous and frighteningly accurate tips someone is calling in. Monica is feeling the heat… or is that a hot flash?
Is their town about to feel the burn of a serial arsonist, or can Monica, Robin, and Val figure out the dangerous secret smoldering at the heart of Glimmer Lake?
Psychic Dreams is a standalone paranormal women’s fiction novel in the Glimmer Lake series by USA Today best seller Elizabeth Hunter, author of the Elemental Mysteries and the Irin Chronicles.
Monica and her two best friends were in a car accident a few years ago and ever since the accident they each developed a psychic power. Monica’s psychic power is visions. Lately, she has been having visions of a terrible fire and she isn’t sure if there’s a way to stop it from becoming a reality. On top of that, there’s a new sexy fire investigator in town who is very suspicious about the anonymous tips that Sully has been receiving.
Even though this book is focused on Monica and her powers, both Robin and Val are very much a part of the story that ties the three books together nicely. Robin continues to use her ability to communicate with ghosts and Val will read an object if needed which helps Monica as she tries to determine what is an actual vision and what is just a dream. This series focuses on women over 40 which is a refreshing change and the book is still relatable for a reader of any age.

Excerpt: Of Cinder and Bone Series by Kyoko M

Someone wants Dr. Rhett “Jack” Jackson dead.
After surviving a vicious attack from a dragon in his own home, Jack and Dr. Kamala Anjali investigate who sent the dragon to kill him. Unfortunately, their list of enemies is long. Plenty of people have an axe to grind with the two scientists responsible for the rebirth of the previously extinct dragons that are now flourishing on every continent of the planet. Jack and Kamala rejoin with their team at the Knight Division to hunt down the culprit and put an end to their revenge scheme once and for all.
But will it cost them everything?
Of Fury and Fangs is the fourth novel in the Amazon and USA Today bestselling Of Cinder and Bone series, following Of Cinder and Bone, Of Blood and Ashes, and Of Dawn and Embers.
Jack raised his gun as a man came around the front of the truck and opened fire with a roar, emptying the clip into the man’s chest. The yakuza crumpled to the road in a heap. Another one stepped out from behind him and raised his AR-15, his finger closing on the trigger.
And then the dragon dropped out of the sky right on top of him.
Pete slammed the man to the ground with her clawed feet and took a vicious bite out of his neck, killing him instantly. A third man jumped on top of the truck’s hood and stopped dead out of pure shock, as he was now level with her. The dragon snarled and slammed her tail into his chest. It sent him cartwheeling off the edge of the road and down into the ravine beside it, screaming the whole way.
The dragon snorted once and then hurried over to Jack and Kamala, sniffing them briefly in confirmation, and then nudging them towards her large, scaly torso.
“I… I think she wants us to get on,” Kamala said, dumbfounded as Pete bumped her side up against them and flapped her huge wings.
“That’s impossible,” Jack sputtered. “The two of us together nearly weigh three hundred pounds. She can’t possibly lift—holy shitbricks!”
Impatient, the dragon slid her neck through Jack’s parted legs and stood up, barking once at Kamala. She threw her leg over the dragon’s back. Then Pete took three mighty steps towards the edge of the road and leapt off.
For three terrifying seconds, they dropped through the air like a cement block.
Then, Pete’s leathery wings spread and they flew.
Gunfire cracked behind them, but the dragon flapped her wings to carry them higher out of harm’s way. She wheeled to one side and they disappeared into the shadow of the mountain range, over the forest below.
Jack dug his fingers into the dragon’s collar and finally opened his eyes. He stared speechless at the ground easily forty feet below them and into the cloudy horizon. Wind whistled past his ears, interrupted only by the powerful strokes of the dragon’s wings and the raspy clink of the chain still dragging below her body as they cut through the crisp air. She flew smoothly, as if she’d been doing it all her life, as if it were an effortless skill.
Behind him, Kamala had locked her arms around his waist and buried her face between his shoulder blades when they’d first taken off. Now, she held one hand out flat, her palm parallel to the ground, feeling the wind rushing over it. Half-hysterical laughter enveloped them both as the dragon carried them higher still, until they were circling one of the mountain’s peaks.
Enormous clouds piled high around the mountain and the air became sharply cold as they neared it. The trees stopped halfway up its craggy face and gave way to perpetual ice created from the height and upper atmosphere. As Pete circled for the fourth time, they realized she was searching for shelter.
On the fifth pass, the dragon brought her wings in close to her body in a dive as they reached a cliff near the mouth of a cave. She fought the stiff wind and landed hard, digging her claws into the earth. Jack helped Kamala off and the dragon shook herself and stepped forward into the cave. The two of them called to her, but she paid them no mind. The freezing temperature and high winds wouldn’t make it easy to get down any time soon.
They had no choice.
