Selah's Manga Mania Review: Sorry for My Familiar Vol. 1 by Tekka Yaguraba

Sorry for My Familiar Vol. 1

180 pages
Publisher: Seven Seas
Genre: humor, fantasy, YA

AN UNFAMILIAR JOURNEY

When the devil girl Patty finds she's too weak to summon an animal familiar, she chooses a human instead. His name: Norman Volcanello--an eccentric guy with a dangerous fascination with exotic life forms. As Patty and Norman set out to find her missing father, an offbeat adventure begins!

I grabbed Sorry for My Familiar without really looking at the premise – I guess I expected it to be about witches and their animals or something. However, the premise just made it way WAY better for me.

Patty the devil girl is too weak to summon an animal familiar, so she chooses a human demonologist named Norman instead. Set loose in devil world to find her missing father, things go about as well as you’d expect.

The Good: I feel like in a lot of ways this was hand-written for me. It starts really fast with little setup, and you’re thrown into the adventure pretty straight away. It’s just so ridiculous – Patty’s looked down on for using Norman, but his skills help the pair out a lot, too…as much as they get them into trouble. Between getting suckered into a familiar deathmatch, getting lost in a desert, and having to store Norman in a barn with a giant lethal creature that he just wants to sketch and learn about, plus hearing how much trouble her dad’s gotten into along the way, this thing is chock full of fun and silliness. Both Patty and Norman have their extreme emotional reactions to things and play the straight person for each other at other times. It’s not a perfect balance yet, but I could see it really coming together in future volumes. The illustrations are over the top where it counts, adding to the emotion. I love the sheer amount of character types in this world, which helps out a fairly straightforward narrative. Adding in the character of her uncle helps a lot, too. In some ways, I wish a little more time was spent in some of these places, because there’s a lot to see framing the main story. We never really leave Patty and Norman’s point of view, which is a solid choice, but it also feels a little limiting given the sheer amount of stuff in this world.
The bad: Not really bad, but it definitely reads like a first volume. I’m not sure what could have been changed to suck me in a little more, but there were times I felt myself disengaging, or thinking ‘oh my gosh, what now??’ It leaves off after a punchline on an adventure, so there’s no real cliffhanger or something that makes me feel like I need to know what comes next, even though it’s set up as a long-form adventure. This feels like a better fit for middle grade and younger teens, but it’s still a fun flip through overall.
The ick: nah, nothing gets gross or too violent.

Excerpt: Ginger Snapped: A Cybercrime Thriller with a Shocking Twist by Chloe Sunstone + giveaway

Congrats to Chloe Sunstone on the release of her exciting Cybercrime Thriller, Ginger Snapped! Read on for more details, an exclusive excerpt, and a fantastic giveaway!

by Chloe Sunstone
October 22nd, 2018
Genre: Thriller
How does an amazing professional opportunity descend into a living nightmare?

Carefree Ginger's motto of “Work Hard, Play Harder” shapes her life. So when her husband, Jake, gets a job offer on the other side of the country, she is up for the adventure. But after Jake accepts the promotion, nothing is as expected. While Ginger remains in Cleveland to sell their house, she is plagued by strange prank calls, premonition-like nightmares, and the feeling that she is being watched. Is Jake's new job putting her in danger? Unfortunately, she ignores her intuition and soon finds herself face to face with a ruthless killer. Trapped in a deadly world of corporate corruption and murderous greed, she must overcome her own fears and rely on her wits if she plans to survive.

Although the first in the Ginger Gibson series, this is a standalone book.

Excerpt
Oh No! I’m back. I am surrounded by inky black nothingness. The air is musty…damp, my nostrils fill with the smell of dank basement. Like in a haunted house, filled with saws and chains and bloody hooks, this is the perfect place for any psycho to hide his tools of the crazy trade. I’m trembling, from the all-encompassing fear, eating at every cell in my body. Where am I? My fingers search out for clues. Beneath me is a thin mattress on a hard surface. My head rests on a concrete-like pillow. My breathing escalates as the panic rises in my chest. I open my mouth to scream, but only a muted croak escapes. Over the thunder of my pounding heart, I hear a booming crack, a gunshot. I recognize the sound from a trip to the range with Jake years earlier. I swing my legs over the side of my perch, thinking in my blind panic to run even though I cannot see. I can’t ignore this intense urge to flee. But my impulse is thwarted by an unknown restraint trapping my left arm, a rope? Panic has me in its grip. I gasp for air to fill my lungs but produce only whimpers and muted pleas. A loud screech reverberates through the darkness. Rats? Oh, please, no rats! Could this get any worse? Hysterical, I yank relentlessly on the rope tethering me. With each tug, the line cuts deeper into my skin. My arm warms as blood seeps from the gouges, coating my hand and fingers. Behind me, the pounding sound of footsteps startles me. Before I can turn to confront my visitor, I feel the rush of air preceding the impact to the back of my head. A blaze of bright stars then, a different blackness envelopes me.

Jacey Bedford Confession: I write both science fiction (space opera) and historical fantasy.

Confession: I write both science fiction (space opera) and historical fantasy.

The two are not mutually exclusive. I can easily switch from one to the other. My first published trilogy is space opera (the Psi-Tech trilogy) and my second trilogy completes in November with the publication of the third book, ROWANKIND.

With space opera, you can largely make stuff up as long as you are consistent and logical, but with historical fantasy, you've got to get your history right. It's the solid background of history that grounds your book, even if you inject elements of magic. It may be that your history has diverged from 'real' history at a specific point and therefore everything is now one sideways step from the real timeline, or it may be that real history is happening around your storyline with the addition of (say) magic.

That's what has happened in my Rowankind trilogy, set in 1800-1802.

I try to get my history right. This involves a lot of research because I'm not a history scholar. I have to fact-check everything, from the Napoleonic Wars, to the best timber to make the hull of a sailing ship. (Bermuda teak if you want to know.)

So I'd been ultra-careful when writing ROWANKIND and its predecessors, WINTERWOOD, and SILVERWOLF. I had to research Georgian England, from street maps of Plymouth and London in the relevant periods, to costume, transport, housing (right down to available paint colours), and the length of time it took for the mail coach to reach London from Barnsley.

But sometimes you need to know what you don't know in order to be able to look it up.

ROWANKIND was finished and delivered to my publisher (DAW in the USA). I was waiting for the page proofs, which is the final stage that the author has any involvement. With page proofs, you can't add or subtract a great deal. You can correct typos and make minor adjustments to punctuation, but you can't add in a new scene or even a substantial paragraph. At the climax of the book, my main characters are observing Parliament debating [something… but if I tell you what, I'd have to shoot you]. I was happy with the way the book ending was working… and then… I heard an article on BBC Radio4 about women being allowed to view parliamentary proceedings for the first time in the 1830s. And I had women viewing Parliament in 1802. (Not only viewing but interrupting the proceedings from a non-existent public gallery.)

That may not seem like such a huge mistake to you, but you can bet your bottom dollar, that someone would have pointed it out to me within a day or publication. Luckily a quick email to my publisher got me dispensation to make the necessary alteration at the page proof stage. Whew! Saved by the BBC. I love Radio4.

"Swashbuckling action, folklore and characters to care about: this is an authentic English take on historical fantasy, magic and class." - Kari Sperring, author of The Grass King's Concubine.

What do you do with a feral wolf shapechanger who won't face up to his responsibilities? How do you contain magical creatures accidentally loosed into Britain's countryside? How do you convince a crew of barely-reformed pirates to go straight when there's smuggling to be done? How do you find a lost notebook full of deadly spells while keeping out of the clutches of its former owner? How do you mediate between a mad king and the seven lords of the Fae?

Ross and Corwen, she a witch and he a shapechanger, have several problems to solve but they all add up to the same thing. How do you make Britain safe for magic users?

It's 1802. A tenuous peace with France is making everyone jumpy. The Fae, and therefore Ross and Corwen at their behest, have unfinished business with Mad King George, who may not be as mad as everyone thinks--or if he is, he's mad in a magical way. The Fae have left mankind alone up to now because they don't care to get involved with mortals, but don't be fooled into thinking they're harmless.

"It's like an irresistible smorgasbord of all my favourite themes and fantasy elements all in one place, and a strong, compelling female protagonist was the cherry on the top." - Bibliosanctum

If you’ve ever wished for the power of invisibility, I advise you to rethink your superpower.

Sure, temporary invisibility might be cool. But what if it becomes your normal? Let me tell you, it’s not as fun as it seems. Neither is being a ghost.

I miss kissing. I miss my boyfriend.

If this is eternity, I’d like a refund.

Someone or something powerful is coming. There’s a new coven in Boston and a new spirit witch has joined the Wicked Society.

Good. It’s been forever since I’ve had some fun.

Book Review: The Fae Games Duet by Jill Ramsower + giveaway

The Fae Games Duet
Shadow Play (The Fae Games Book 1)
Jun 23, 2018
Twilight Siege (The Fae Games Book 2)

Sept 1, 2018
by Jill Ramsower
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

When Rebecca Peterson walks away from everything she knows to follow her dreams in Ireland, she never expects to be thrown into a world of vicious Fae and deadly secrets. On the dreary streets of Belfast, her terrifying nightmares are rekindled, and this time they aren’t confined to her imagination. Complicating her life further, Becca crosses paths with two mysterious strangers—both alluring in different ways, but are either of them to be trusted?

Her journey takes her deep into the treacherous Shadow Lands, where both her knowledge and courage will be tested. Navigating this new landscape of deceit and manipulation is paramount if she is to stop hordes of blood-thirsty Faeries from invading Earth. With time running out, will her limited training be enough to take on a centuries old enemy hell-bent on death and destruction? To keep those she loves safe, Becca is willing to risk it all.

In this captivating duet, Jill Ramsower takes her readers from the streets of Belfast on a harrowing journey to the most dangerous corners of Faery, where fear is a lethal enemy and trust is a luxury few can afford.

Rebecca Peterson, a young burgeoning art historian, is desperate to reach her full potential. Feeling the pull to move beyond her New York City waitressing gig, she pursues a job opportunity abroad at a Belfast museum. With little hesitation, Becca accepts the offer and embarks on her new adventure. She’s barely settled in her new home when her world is vastly altered. Becca almost immediately finds herself thrust into the supernatural world of fae politics and espionage. Ramsower’s creative alternate-Belfast complete with intrigue and combustible romance easily make Fae Games one of my favourite new urban fantasies of 2018. The Fae Games Duet contains the first two books in Jill Ramsower’s new series; Shadow Play and Twilight Siege.

The Fae Games Duet was difficult to put down. Initially I found Becca’s voice slightly juvenile and the idea of Becca’s gal pal accompanying her on her journey slightly silly. However, in the larger context, Ramsower’s creative choices make better sense. Becca’s transformation as a character is well-told; from her initial arrival in Belfast in Shadow Play to her dramatic transformation and personal realization in Twilight Siege. Both books are entertaining, quick reads. The second book is even better than the first as the storytelling becomes more confident.

Becca’s journey is linked to the work of the Huntsmen, a group of elite royal-appointed male fae living on earth and protecting the interest of the Seelie court. Among the group are a formidable cast of powerful fae, two of which – Locklan and Ronan -- zero in on Becca quickly. The romantic tension unravels at a deliciously torturous pace, a device I find wholly entertaining.

Shades of Betrayal, the third Fae Games installment was released last week. A review of book three, Ashley’s story, is forthcoming.

Book Review: The Mortal Word (The Invisible Library Novel Book 5) By Genevieve Cogman

When Irene returns to London after a relatively straightforward book theft in Germany, Bradamant informs her that there is a top secret dragon-Fae peace conference in progress that the Library is mediating, and that the second-in-command dragon has been stabbed to death. Tasked with solving the case, Vale and Irene immediately go to 1890s Paris to start their investigation.

Once they arrive, they find evidence suggesting that the murder victim might have uncovered proof of treachery by one or more Librarians. But to ensure the peace of the conference, some Librarians are being held as hostages in the dragon and Fae courts. To save the captives, including her parents, Irene must get to the bottom of this murder--but was it a dragon, a Fae, or even a Librarian who committed the crime?

Irene returns to London and Bradamant tells her about the peace conference
between the dragons and the Fae set in Paris of another alternate world. The Library will mediate it,

But when a second-in-command dragon to the King dragon is murdered, Irene along with Vale and Kai, must figure out who killed the man and get the peace treaty signed. But the Blood Countess, a Fae known that inspired Dracula, isn’t helping.

Once again, Genevieve Cogman has drawn me into her fantasy alternate worlds peopled by mortals, Fae, and dragons. There are librarians and books, and a real-life woman infamously known as a vampire because she bathed in virgins’ blood, a Parisian underground, and much more. She has proven again that librarians make the best heroes!

That’s the name of the dating app I picked, hoping to find Mr. Better Than Average so I can hold off planning my future as a cat lady.
I’ve been distracted eyeballing a tall, dark, and handsome Latin hottie who works in the library with me. He is way out of my league, and a woman has needs if you know what I mean.
Finding a man shouldn’t be hard when all I have to do is swipe left or right. It’ll weed out the slimy men who have Bad Date written all over them.
Yeah, I’m learning quickly that I’m rather unlucky in love after all. The men I pick need warning labels, kissing lessons, and a good talking-to about manners.
Should I throw in the towel, or will this series of bad dates be exactly what I need to win Mr. Right?

Good luck and have a pleasant apocalypse.
The end of the world is coming. How or when, scientists can’t agree upon. For decades, Earth’s best line of defense has been a team of young soldiers known as the Apocalypse Five, forced into virtual reality simulations to train for Doom’s Day. But, this is no game. Death on the grid is brutally final and calls up the next in a long line of cadets.
Stationed aboard the AT-1-NS Starship, the A5 are celebrities thrust into the limelight by a calling they didn’t choose. All it takes is one unscheduled mission, showing seventeen-year-old team leader Detroit a harsh and unfathomable reality, to shake the A5’s belief in all they thought they knew. After questioning people with the power to destroy them, the team is framed for a crime they didn’t commit and marked for death. Now, the hunt is on.
Can the Apocalypse Five expose the truth the starship would kill to keep hidden? Or, will their bravery end in a public execution?
