Book Review: Treasured by a Tiger (Eternal Mates Paranormal Romance Series Book 14) by Felicity Heaton

by Felicity Heaton
September 9, 2017
192 pages
Despised by his tiger shifter pride as an abomination, Grey has ventured far from home, deep into the bowels of Hell in search of answers about the machinations of Archangel, the mortal hunter organisation who held his twin captive. With no knowledge of the realm, and little skill with the local languages, he quickly finds himself at a dead end—until he crosses paths with a beautiful hellcat female who rouses his darkest most dangerous instincts.

Lyra has been a fool, falling for the charms of a male whose only desire was to make a fast buck by selling her. Shackled and collared, her strength muted by magic, she awaits her time on the stage at a black-market auction, but before it can come, all hell breaks loose and she seizes a chance to escape—and runs straight into a majestic warrior who steals her breath away and tempts her like no other as he battles alone to free everyone.

When Lyra offers her services as a translator to repay Grey for saving her, will he be strong enough to resist the needs she awakens in him and spare himself the pain of her inevitable rejection when she discovers the truth about him? And when the powerful male in charge of the slave ring starts a bloody hunt for Lyra, can she escape another collar and find the courage to trust the tiger who is capturing her heart?

The last three books in Felicity Heaton’s Eternal Mates series have centered on the life and love of tiger shifter siblings Talon, Maya, and Grey. Treasured by a Tiger is Grey’s story, the tiger who has felt like the pride misfit his entire life. In his hellish quest for answers, Grey rescues Lyra an enslaved hellcat slated to be sold on the black market. Together the pair must escape Lyra’s captors and navigate their newfound romance all the while attempting to uncover the machinations of the malevolent, ever-present militaristic organization Archangel.

I’ve been reading Felicity Heaton’s Eternal Mates series since book #11, so while I’m not overly familiar with all inner workings of the Eternal Mates-iverse, I’ve come to rely on a few things where this series is concerned. First, most of the books I’ve read follow a similar arc where mates are fated for one another, but, through a series of events, must fight to unify. Often, the number one culprit is simple miscommunication. Next, Heaton is a premier writer of paranormal romance with emphasis on the romance. Heaton writes romance that’s sensual and expressive without becoming overly formulaic. Finally, I’ve never regretted reading a Heaton novel. Her books are reliably well-written and always entertaining. While new ground isn’t necessarily a priority with this series, the varied landscape and characters add new layers with each installment.

Eternal Mates is always a good time. Treasured by a Tiger is no exception.

Savage begins the Dragonrider Legacy series, a thrilling companion to the international bestselling Dragonrider Chronicles.

Never send a hero to do a monster’s job. Forty years have passed since Jaevid Broadfeather brought peace to Maldobar and Luntharda. But that fragile truce will be tested as darkness gathers on the horizon. The vicious armies of the Tibran Empire have crossed the far seas and are threatening to destroy Maldobar completely. Not even the dragonriders can match the Tibran war machines. And after an attempt to awaken Jaevid from his divine sleep fails, the fate of Maldobar is looking grim. Reigh has never known what it means to be a normal human. Raised amongst the gray elves in the wild jungle of Luntharda, he’s tried everything to fit in. But the dark power within him is bursting at the seams—refusing to be silenced. And while his adoptive father, Kiran, insists this power must be kept secret, Reigh knows he’s running out of time. As Maldobar burns, the world is desperate for a new hero. Destiny has called, and one boy will rise to answer.

EXCERPT
“Becoming a Dragonrider” Scene:

Out of nowhere, the whole building shuddered under my boots. I spun around, expecting to see some form of a Tibran attack hailing down upon us. What would it be this time? A catapult? A monster? I didn’t have a weapon—no sword, bow, or scimitar.

I ran right into the end of a short, scaly snout. Two familiar, big, blue eyes the same hue as the sky stared at me.

I gave an undignified, I’m about to die, please someone save me scream. Thank the gods Aubren and Jenna weren’t there.

Scrambling backwards, I flailed my arms and tried to get away. The heel of my boot caught on an uneven stone tile and I went down, landing flat on my back.

Those big eyes appeared over me again. Cat-like pupils widened and that short snout sniffed me so hard it sucked up some of the front of my shirt.

“Gods and Fates,” I squeaked. “Please don’t eat me.”

The dragon made a humming, purring noise. It pulled back some and perked its small, scaly ears. Wait … Why was that look so familiar? Then I realized—this was the same wild dragon that had pulled me out of the Tibran’s tunnel and saved my life. It was back, and alone this time.

“What do you want? Look, I’m really grateful for before. You saved my life, and I appreciate that. But I don’t have any food.” I tried to bargain with it as I cautiously sat up.

The dragon flopped onto its belly in front of me, making the roof shudder. I swallowed, my heart still pounding in my ears as we stared at one another. What was this? A greeting? Not that I was any sort of dragon expert, but there was something impatient about the way it was staring me down.

This dragon was smaller than some of the others I’d seen. It had a more slender body, and its scales were shiny like they had a pearlescent coating on them. Their lime green color faded gradually into electric yellow along the dragon’s belly. Its back, snout, tail, and legs all had dark green stripes like a tiger, and there was a line of long yellow spines down its whole body. Two big horns on the dragon’s head curved back and sloped inward, like a stretched-out S-shape.

The beast was looking up at me and twitching the very tip of its tail, like it was waiting on me to do something.

“I … uh … ” I tried taking a step backward, away from it. “I’m just gonna go back inside now, so you should probably go back home.”

The dragon scooted closer and lay flat again, making a chirping sound.

“I’m not sure what you want.”

It snorted. Its hind haunches wiggled, like a puppy trying to get someone to play.

Crap.

It scooted again, this time intentionally bumping its big nose against my knees. I tripped and fell forward, landing square on the dragon’s head. The monster yipped in delight and immediately stood up, tossing me backward so I landed right on its neck. Thankfully, I didn’t get impaled on any of those spines. I landed right between two of them, and barely had time to hang on for dear life as the dragon rose, spread its wings, and took off.

The last thing I saw were the four watchmen at the top of the tower rushing in to try to help me. They yelled and waved their arms, blowing their horns—but they were too late.

Book Review: Wyrd Blood by Donna Augustine

Wyrd Blood
by Donna Augustine
Sept. 10, 2017
Pages: 304
Sometimes I wonder what life was like before magic burst into existence, before the Magical War of 810 destroyed our world. What it was like before there were Wyrd Blood, or we were forced into hiding.

And that's what I've been doing for years, hiding me and my crew. But that's about to end. My crew is starving and things are getting dire. When I get desperate enough to try and steal from Ryker, one of the toughest men in these parts, things go bad and my Wyrd Blood origins are outed.

But it's not all bad. Ryker can help keep me alive from the mysterious illness that's been plaguing me. He can also feed my crew. The only thing I have to do in return is start another war.

The Magical War of 810 destroyed the world and started a bid for power. People with magic had Wyrd Blood and were hunted to either indenture the person into a high-powered person’s service or killed to gain their power neither being a way to live your life. Bugs has been hiding since she was 7 and runs a small crew. They depend on her to feed and keep them safe and times are getting extremely tough. Bugs decides the only way to help her crew it to steal from Ryker but things go badly and she’s outed as a Wryd Blood. Bugs has to decide if making a deal with Ryker is the best way to keep her crew alive as well as herself.

In a world where people in power are greedy and selfish, this story makes you think about the troubles in society where different castes of people struggle while others do not. Even though I like to live in fantasy through books sometimes it is nice to see that even in a fantasy world it relates to reality. Augustine always delivers a new and exciting story that is an easy read and you do not want to miss this one!

Donna Augustine was an odd child, had a brief moment of conformity in early adulthood and then decided to embrace her craziness as the years rolled by. It's her inner crazy that she credits with coming up with the ideas for her books. One part hypochondriac, a few dashes of paranoia, topped with a sliver of uptight and delivered with a relaxed flair, she kicked the proverbial box down the yellow brick road a couple years ago to embrace her true self.

She can be reached by a carrier pigeon, set free in a south by north direction, where she resides in Neverland with her two Siberian cats. Cats who, by the way, aren't as hypoallergenic as she believed they'd be.

For the conventional minded, and those of you without a pigeon on hand, she can be reached at donna@donnaaugustine.com. She responds to most emails within three dusk periods.

P.S. For those of you looking for the discarded box, it was sitting beside the road for a while but has since disappeared completely.

Book Review: Spirit Witch (The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Magic #3) by Helen Harper

Spirit Witch (The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Magic #3)
By Helen Harper

268 pages
If anyone appreciates what it means to be dead to the world, it's Ivy Wilde.

Barely recovered from her brush with necromancy, Ivy is flung once more into a world of intrigue, adventure and potential death and disaster. It's not her fault - it just so turns out that she's now the only person in the entire world who can communicate with the dead. And they're a chatty bunch with a list of demands.

When the ghosts offer information about a witch-hating mass murderer in return for Ivy's help, she has no choice but to get involved. She might be getting herself into more trouble than she realises though - and that's even before she's dragged to Sunday dinner so she can meet Winter's family...

This is the third book in The Lazy Girl's Guide To Magic series.

Spirit Witch marks the conclusion to Helen Harper’s Lazy Girl’s Guide to Magic Trilogy. In this final installment, Ivy has acquired the ability to communicate with dead souls trapped on the earthly plane; a side effect of the necromantic magic she absorbed in book two. For all of Ivy’s lackadaisical tendencies, she feels compelled to assist the trapped souls in crossing over amidst being thrust into a serial killer investigation. With Raphael Winter by her side, Ivy sets about solving the mystery and using her newfound power for good. Perhaps with the mystery behind her Ivy will finally find time for a little Netflix ‘n’ Chill.

Spirit Witch has all the exceptional characteristics I’ve come to rely upon in a Helen Harper book. Her stories are well-crafted and imaginative, both action-packed and hilarious. Harper is an accomplished creator of romantic tension. At this point in the series, however, Ivy and Winter have solidified their feelings. Gone is the delicious tension created in the first two books. Instead, Harper focuses on developing her highly entertaining characters and thrilling storyline. One of my favourite characters of this series is Brutus, Ivy’s feline familiar. He’s salty as hell, but always comes through when it counts.

This is the third Helen Harper series I’ve read, and I’m hooked. Her books have something for all paranormal readers, but I especially love her humour and witty female heroines. If you haven’t already, it’s time to check out Helen Harper.

Book Review: Suicide Queen (Dana McIntyre Must Die Series Book 4) by SM Reine

Suicide Queen (Dana McIntyre Must Die Series Book 4)
by SM Reine
Sept 21, 2017
Pages: 211
There are only thirty-six hours until Las Vegas will be daylighted by the witches of the Office of Preternatural Affairs. Thirty-six hours until every last vampire in Clark County gets ashed.

A serial killing vampire is taking advantage of every last one of those hours. His perverse game means mutilated vampire fledglings running amok, and it means there's only one vampire hunter who can catch him.

Dana McIntyre's getting out of prison to do what she does best.

And Nissa Royal is waiting to receive her with open arms.

The suicide queen's been dealt. The stakes are deadly. Now it's time to show their hands and find out who has the high card - and who will be winning the soul of Las Vegas.

The Office of Preternatural Affairs has decided the only way to deal with the Las Vegas vampire problems is to have witch’s daylight the entire city which will last for 6 months. It will take 36 hours for the witch’s to be ready with the ritual, in the meantime a serial killer vampire is creating vampire fledglings and mutilating them in some very disturbing ways.

The OPA comes to Dana in prison with a proposition. Work for them on this new serial vampire killer case and get our prison or stay there and continue to be beaten and probably killed. Dana wants to kill vampires so she decides the lesser of two evils is to take the OPA’s deal. She figures she will find a way around the rules and do things her way as usual.

Dana’s character is complicated. She has a I don’t care about anything attitude and my way is the only way but cracks in her armor show occasionally for those she cares about. She is bound and determined to fight for Penny even if she is the only one that sees thinks Penny is fragile. The amount of time that Reine has spent developing each character is phenomenal. I know that her books are written rather quickly but you’d never know that from reading them. Another must read!

It’s a race against time to unravel the lethal secrets the virus is hiding before the city itself is lost forever.

Holy guacamole Batman, did you see this cover?! Can backs really look this good! Unfrost my vampire heart, I am in lust with this cover model's back. Back love aside, this book is really amazing. I am not one to say that lightly or often either. It really was.

I had no clue about this series or the author until I last week. It's always worrisome to pick up a story in an ongoing series, you never know how that will turn out. Yeah, at points I did feel like I was missing character's past history, but that was overcome by the sheer brilliant writing of this author. However, I will be going back to book one so I can get the full scope of this saga.

We get the great opportunity of meeting leading lady doc Vivian, she's not looking forward to heading back to her old town BUT as a medicine woman, she's kinda bound by her own code. She's one hell of a lady too, I love every single thing about her. So much humor colored throughout the story had me really falling for these folks. I would love to just be a fly on the wall in one of their hangouts. THAT would be a blast!

A really entertaining romance with tons of mystery and laced with laugh-out-loud sidekicks that draw you in. Overall, I would recommend this one to any PNR reader who just enjoys a good story!

Book Review: Archangel's Viper (Guild Hunter #10) by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Viper (Guild Hunter #10)
by Nalini Singh
September 26th, 2017
400 pages
Berkley
Enter New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s breathtakingly passionate Guild Hunter world with the story of a woman who isn’t a vampire or an angel…or human…

Once a broken girl known as Sorrow, Holly Chang now prowls the shadowy gray underground of the city for the angels. But it’s not her winged allies who make her a wanted woman—it’s the unknown power coursing through her veins. Brutalized by an insane archangel, she was left with the bloodlust of a vampire, the ability to mesmerize her prey, and a poisonous bite.

Now, someone has put a bounty on her head…

Venom is one of the Seven, Archangel Raphael’s private guard, and he’s as infuriating as he is seductive. A centuries-old vampire, his fangs dispense a poison deadlier than Holly’s. But even if Venom can protect Holly from those hunting her, he might not be able to save himself—because the strange, violent power inside Holly is awakening…

No one is safe.

Before I start the review I have to be honest, I have a HUGE woman crush on Nalini Singh. So, pretty much anything she writes I am going to love/worship/take to the grave. Just wanted to be honest up front.

Archangel's Viper had me from the first page until the very last. I've been waiting for my main man Venom to have his night in the moonlight, my gods this book did not disappoint! Venom is my vampire dreamboat. I love him and would actually fight his lady Holly to the death for his hand. Just tell me when and where Holly and we will have at it! (Sharon needs to back me up though since she knows how to fight.)
Sharon: I got your back fam.
But girl fight aside, this story takes off and never looks back.

There are so many beautiful layers to everything Nalini produces, I am her willing slave. She has this brilliant talent of making these elaborate worlds come to life. These many different characters walk into your dreams and never leave, this tangible thing is unexplained but so welcome!

Action, romance, and adventure are this authors thing, so buckle up tight and be ready for the journey. I'm not giving anything away, read this book. Read all her books!

About the author:

I've been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There's no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I've worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer's mill.

The doors crash open as a pack of weres in human form stomp in, the exception being an immense, midnight-black wolf with a white left paw who leads them. His lips peel back, exposing a row of pointy fangs as he growls at the vampires surrounding me. But it’s the man storming forward with dark almond eyes and a six-inch dagger in his hand that gives me pause.

“Hi, honey,” I say, giving him a little wave.

Funny thing, he doesn’t wave back. His gaze swoops over my naked body. “Hold her,” he snarls, ramming the knife into my thigh.

Reality shoves aside the shock of having the man I love stab me in the leg. Like a heated blade through butter, he slices through the skin and muscle, creating a diagonal line and spraying blood across the glass shower walls. I expect pain, scorching white-hot pain, and to lose my blood supply in large volumes. But like the creepy crawly beneath my skin, I just feel that wretched pulling and grabbing.

My bleeding trickles to a stop just as Gemini’s hand plunges deep into the incision. The image is so graphic and brutal my stomach lurches. I’m seconds from passing out. The vamps on either side of me are the only thing keeping me vertical. But when my focus latches onto the hilt of the dagger, and I realize it’s a femur—a freaking femur!— my body immediately slumps.

Of course, that’s not the worst part.

The tangle of bodies, limbs, and faces, carved around the hilt twitch, as if seizing, breaking free of what’s holding them to slither. Oh, and it gets better. The mouths open, singing one messed up version of O Fortuna.

“Jesus Christ,” I gasp, my body trembling violently as their slowly amplifying voices echo across the room.

Agnes grips my jaw, yanking my face toward her. “Taran, get it together before you set this whole place on fire.”

I wrench my head free. “Don’t you think I’m trying?!”

I bite back a curse, and a few more, when something scampers toward my right butt cheek.

It doesn’t get far. Gemini thrusts his hand deep, wrenching a large, screeching lump from my leg, exciting the minute faces continuing to sing and slide along the hilt. Their voices crescendo and their bodies writhe with glee. I don’t get a good look at the demon impaled by the dagger, and I don’t want to. I only see enough to realize I was right about the spindly legs and pinchers.

Gemini carries the shrieking demon to the sink, ignoring the way the long cluster of centipede legs kick out and clutch blindly at the air. I wish I could ignore it. But those things you can’t unsee? I’ve seen plenty in my twisted, messed up life and this is one more to add to my list.

Gemini holds out his free hand. Without asking, a vamp drops an opened bottle of vodka into his palm. Gemini pours the vodka over the demon, stunning it and causing the legs to fall open like petals—nasty petals covered with blood, pointy grippy ends, and little bits of me.

With a turn of his wrist, he drops the demon into the sink. It falls with a sick plop.

Agnes’s weight abruptly pulls off me when she stands and hurries to the sink. She flicks a lighter another vamp tosses her and drops it on top of the demon. “Ad infernum,” she tells it, sending it back to hell.

The vamps step away from me as the flames spray up to lick the ceiling. The exception is Edith who remains on her knees, clutching my leg between her breasts and sealing my wound with several fast and enthusiastic strokes of her tongue.

“Get away from her,” Gemini demands. His voice is more beast than human, setting off an orchestra of snarls from the rest of the pack.

Like a very hungry dog with a bone, Edith doesn’t want to let go. Gemini doesn’t give her a choice. From one breath to the next, he rips me from her, wrapping me in a blanket someone hands him and carrying me away.
