Movie Review: Divergent

Divergent (2014)
Director: Neil Burger
Writers: Evan Daugherty (screenplay), Vanessa Taylor (screenplay)
Stars: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet
139 min
Action | Adventure | Sci-Fi
21 March 2014 (USA)
In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she's Divergent and won't fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it's too late.

just added this pic because...duh!

Went to see Divergent with the husband and 12 year old daughter. None of us have read the book. Over all the whole family really enjoyed the movie. The premise was interesting and there was enough action and suspense to keep me watching. There were parts that were drawn out a bit too long like a gaze lasting too long or a quiet reflection we could have done without. I don’t know how big a part the romance plays in the book, but I was glad it wasn’t a big focus of the movie. They were definitely going for the dystopian feel. But the other side of that blade is Tris and Four went from wistful gazes to “I love you” pretty quick. And I could nit-pick the bejeezus out of the world building, but my guess is a lot of details had to be left out from the book so I don’t hold that against the movie.

The movie did nail the characters journey from the fear and hopelessness to the triumph and courage like you would expect in a dystopian story.

I liked all the characters: Kate Winslet played a terrific bitch, Theo James (sigh) was a fun brooding hero and while I had a hard time accepting Shailene’s innocent wide eyed cover-girl face, Tris is a strong and realistic female character. She was given no slack because she was a girl in the Dauntless training and even though she got beat the hell up by some of the boys, she used her brains to her advantage and not some superpowers to overcome the odds.
first kiss scene here, yeah, can't say I blame her

Do you need to see it on a big screen? No, but if you want to get out of the house and enjoy the theater experience then it is worth a matinee price.

Sharon Stogner

Interview: Debbie Viguie - Circle of Blood (A Witch Hunt Novel Book #3) + giveaway

Sharon: Hello Debbie! Welcome to the Flock.
Debbie: Thanks for having me!

Sharon: The last book in your Witch Hunt trilogy comes out April 1, 2014. For those not familiar with the series could you tells us about your protagonist Samantha Ryan and what her situation is going into book #3 Circle of Blood?
Debbie: Samantha was raised in a very evil dark coven. When she was twelve her entire coven was massacred by a demon and she alone escaped. She turned her back on magic and tried to shut out that part of her life, eventually growing up and becoming a homicide detective. Then bodies began popping up with bizarre markings and she realized a new coven had sprung up in the place of the old one and she is forced to go undercover as a witch to stop the killings. She does and her life is completely destroyed. She uproots to a new city only to have trouble follow her there as well. Worse, she keeps losing herself piece by piece to the darkness inside. It takes her over completely when she realizes that she has just been a pawn in a much larger game. That is where book three picks up.

Sharon: What makes the witches and magic in your world unique?
Debbie: I tried to give it a very real feeling, like there was logic and science behind it. The people who can manipulate magic are literally manipulating the energy that flows around them and can cause changes in electrical and magnetic fields.
Sharon: Are there any consequences for your witches in using magic?
Debbie: Absolutely. When they use magic they are pulling energy from their own bodies so it can be very taxing if they are trying to do something big. They have to replenish by resting or pulling energy from their surroundings. If one does something too big there is a danger of actually dying which happens to several witches when a more powerful witch uses them against their will.

Sharon: You’ve written about witches, vampires and werewolves. Is there another supernatural creature you would like to try?
Debbie: Ghosts! Ghosts have shown up in some of my other books but I’ve been really wanting to write a creepy ghost story for a while now.

Sharon: could it be a smexy ghost that haunts a blogger’s house in…NC? <G>
Debbie: <laughing hysterically> Sure, why not!

Sharon: You have co-authored series with Nancy Holder and will be doing one with James Tuck. What process do you use to write with another author?
Debbie: We alternate chapters and revise as we go.
Sharon: Did you get together and map out the story?
Debbie: Absolutely. We work out the outline before we start writing and then check in with each other if we need to alter it drastically.

Sharon: Can you tell us anything about the supernatural Robin Hood retelling?
Debbie: Only that it is going to be amazing! I can’t reveal anything much more than that yet, but it’s been a very exciting process and I think readers are going to be blown away by what we’ve done.

Sharon: Do you have a favorite fictional witch?
Debbie: Besides my own? I really like Scary Godmother and also Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Sharon: Your bio says you like going to amusement parks. Do you have a favorite? And what is your favorite ride?
Debbie: Disneyland in California is my favorite. The Haunted Mansion and Thunder Mountain are my favorite rides.
Sharon: I love the Haunted Mansion in Disney World.
Debbie: It’s awesome! The one in Disneyland Paris is even more amazing. It is really gruesome and macabre in some places.

Sharon: Why did you name your cat Schrödinger? Is he in a box? Do you call him Dinger for short? <G>
Debbie: My husband named him. We call him Schrö for short and he has the most amazing ability to either seemingly be in two places at the same time or absolutely nowhere. We joke that until you actually observe the cat you don’t know if he exists or where he is. And, yes, if there is a box he is in it.

Sharon: If you could be on any game show (past or present) which would it be?
Debbie: Match Game. Whenever I see an old rerun they always look like they’re having so much fun.

Sharon: That brings back memories! Gene Rayburn
Debbie: And always Richard Dawson for the win! Watching those reruns you’d swear that man was psychic.
Sharon: What kind of knick-knacks do you have around your house? Do you collect something?
Debbie: I collect Disney memorabilia from my favorite rides, Halloween decor, mini lanterns, decorative boxes, journals, and pens. Lots and lots of pens.

Rapid Fire:

Sharon: magic markers or crayons?
Debbie: Crayons!

Sharon: popcorn or cotton candy?
Debbie: Popcorn!

Sharon: dark basement or dark attic?
Debbie: Dark attic is definitely scarier!

Sharon: Air bending or Fire bending?
Debbie: Fire bending because Zuko is my favorite

Sharon: ride a horse or ride a camel?
Debbie: Done both. Prefer the horse.
Sharon: Do tell?! Why were you on a camel?
Debbie: Marine World Africa USA in California when I was a kid offered camel rides. I did that several times. They also offered elephant rides which were awesome, too.

Sharon: dance the night away or sleep the night away?
Debbie: Dance!!
Sharon: What kind of music?
Debbie: A mixture of 80s through today. Some slow songs some fast.

Sharon: GI Joe or Ken?
Debbie: The Lone Ranger! But, I did have a Ken doll when I was a kid, too.

Sharon: throw it away or 5 second rule?
Debbie: Throw it away

Sharon: Thanks for stopping by. Is there anything you want to let our readers know before we tour the dungeon?
*hands Debbie an asbestos poncho and umbrella*
Debbie: I wish my office looked more like the dungeon from the Snow White’s Scary Adventure ride at Disneyland. *Puts on poncho and promptly opens umbrella*

But little does Samantha know that her own nightmarish past and Lilith’s are inescapably intertwined—and that what Lilith wants most of all is for Samantha to suffer until her final breath.

After leaving Salem, N.H. and San Francisco, CA, Samantha Ryan (a.k.a Desdemona) is now in New Orleans, after being baited to follow a trail left for her at the end of "The Last Grave". While in New Orleans Samantha discovers someone or something is using a lot of magic to keep other magic users trapped in the area, along with draining them of their magic and leaving them for dead.

With some help from her ex-partner and love interest, Samantha discovers  she wasn't the only one that survived the horrific killing of the coven she was a member of as a child. With amazing flashbacks throughout the story you find out that Lilith was the other member. Lilith is a woman hell bent on revenge along with attempting to recreate the ritual that killed the coven, but this time she aims to succeed where the coven failed.

The inner turmoil Samantha has with herself, if she really is Samantha or Desdemona was interesting to read and follow. The conflict Samantha has about her religion I found intriguing since she has always assumed using magic was "evil" and there is no possible way you can be good and use magic at the same time.

If you enjoy the show Grimm, I recommend checking this series out. The similarities between Nick and Samantha (both cops, both with supernatural abilities) are visible, along with similar side characters . This is also a great trilogy to read if you want a short series to get hooked on.

Spotlight: The My Brother's Keeper Trilogy by Adrienne Wilder + giveaway

There is a lot of good m/m out there. Most are contemporary romances, but there has been a large increase in paranormal romances too. Most m/m readers want HEA stories and that is what the market caters too. I enjoy a good HEA but I also like stories that go to dark places and have a supernatural twist, and that is a lot harder to find. Lucky for me Adrienne Wilder's books fill that need.

I can't officially review this trilogy because I was one of the editors, but it is an emotionally intense roller-coaster of a ride. Be warned, the sex scenes fall into the erotic category.

This three book series features a strong romance between Ellis and Jon. There is also an amazing and touching relationship between Ellis and his mentally disabled brother Rudy. Rudy is a main character and his disability is beautifully and respectfully portrayed. Ellis has spent his life protecting Rudy from the outside world, but in an unexpected twist you learn it has always been the other way around.

The story goes to some dark places with our heroes (Ellis, Jon, Rudy) and you will have your heart removed and stomped on (in the good way) before it is over.

Here is how Adrienne described the trilogy:
"People have asked me to describe this male romance series. It's a rough road into contemporary/suspense and a left turn into [WTF].
That's about all I can do to explain it. If you like Dean Koontz type books, this one should be right up your alley"

(Adrienne is also a cover artist and created all three covers)

The My Brother's Keeper Trilogy

The town of Gilford has a Big and Terrible secret hidden in the ground.

Infecting those it touches.

Exploiting their darkness.
Consuming their souls.
It’s hungry. It’s vile. It’s evil.
And it wants out.

All books are full-length novels and must be read in order. All books are available now.

Book One: The First Three Rules

Marshal Jon Foster lost his purpose and his sanity the day he saw the image of his dead brother. The distraction saved Jon’s life but cost the lives of innocent people including his best friend and partner. It was a price for survival Jon couldn’t live with and was sure he’d never understand.

Driven by grief and guilt he tried to escape his past by fleeing to a small town in the middle of nowhere. Only instead of peace, the memories festered.

Then the offer of a stick of gum from a stranger changes Jon’s life and puts him on a road out of the nightmare he’s trapped in.

Ellis Harper has lived the past twenty years isolated from the outside world and sole caretaker for his mentally disabled brother, Rudy. While Ellis loves his brother, he longs for a life he’ll never be able to have.

Shut away, his days consist of chores, endless cartoons, and games of Go Fish. A world that seemed to have no end until an innocent misunderstanding turns Ellis and his brother into a target for a town bully.

It’s a fight Ellis can never win on his own but thanks to a chance meeting with a stranger, he doesn’t have to.

What begins as a new journey in love for both men quickly unfolds into something neither of them could have ever imagined.

Book Two: Rule Four and Five
amazon buy link

A new chance at life comes in many forms: For Jon it’s a family made with Ellis and his brother Rudy. For Ellis, it’s Jon, who has brought the outside world into the protective life he’s built for his mentally disabled brother.

Together they have discovered true happiness and what it means to be loved.

Then one perfect disaster after the other pushes Jon’s resolve to its limit and Ellis over the edge. If they have any chance of saving what they’ve built both men must face their deepest fears.

It’s a test Jon thought he’d already passed and one Ellis never imagined he’d have to face. The journey will forever change who they are and redefine who they were meant to be.

It has to happen.

And all things happen for a reason.

Book Three: The Final Rule
amazon buy link

Ellis and Jon need answers.
What is there to understand?

Why does it have to happen?

And what reason could ever justify losing those you love?

If only there was a simple answer. But the more questions they ask, the farther they must travel into the darkness and the things they see are not human, or even possible.

They are, in fact, Big and Terrible.

The plague is rising in Gilford. To stop it from spreading Ellis will have to embrace his destiny and Jon will have to let him go. Both men must be willing to lose everything in order to save the innocent.

It is, after all, rule number six.

Print Length: 228 pages

Darby O’Rielly may look like a shy, quiet bookstore owner who waits up at night to make sure her fun loving little sister Rowan makes it home. But that would be a bad assumption if you intend to threaten her family and loved ones. If the deadly magic this witch possesses is unleashed, the whole neighborhood better watch out.

When two handsome brothers move next door, love blooms. Devon and Blake aren’t just hot, they’re vampires hunted by a man with unlimited wealth and vengeance.

With these two atypical couples together, mayhem ensues. Darby is forced to use her new-found magic when hunters snatch Rowan to lure the brothers to their demise. A wreckless decision by the enemy transforms Rowan into a werewolf, throwing her new love Blake into a downward spiral. Werewolf terrors from childhood paralyze his judgment and send him packing, leading Rowan into the arms of a wolf named Dean who helps ease her into the new life she’s forced to embrace.

Buy links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Darby O'Rielly and her sister Rowan are witches that have no real understanding of their powers. Rowan is the carefree spirit while Darby owns a book store and is the responsible sister.

Devon and his brother Blake are vampires and are on the run, marked for death and have no idea why. When they move into a house they find themselves living next door to two witches who have no idea how to use their powers.

I haven't read many Urban Fantasy Romance novels because there's usually more action than romance in them but this story had a nice balance of both, which I really liked.

Things start out very much like real life where two gorgeous guys move in next door and hook up with the two sisters who have the hots for them. Ok, just because two gorgeous vampires have never moved in next door to me doesn't stop me from fantasizing that they day.

One of the funniest characters in this story is Harry the snoring, belly rub loving, klepto kitty, who likes to steal and hoard things he finds in the neighborhood. Harry turns out to have a very interesting part in this story, something that I haven't seen done in a book before.

Things seem to be going really good until some evil guy comes after the brothers and kidnaps Rowan. That's when a huge twist in this story happens and things will never be the same after that. Darby finds out she has more witchy power inside her than ever realized and puts it to good use to help save her sister.

While most books have 1 couple as the main characters, this book seems a little different because it really has two couples. The two brothers and the two sisters, so there are actually two distinct main stories going on at the same time. I didn't have a problem with that, in fact I thought it made for an interesting story until I got to the end. This book has a cliffhanger ending and there's nothing I dislike more than a book that leaves me with a cliffhanger and unanswered questions.

If Blake and Rowan had been secondary characters in this story, I could maybe understand leaving the completion of their story for the next book but they weren't written as secondary characters. They were written as main characters just as much as Darby and Devon were and so their story should have had an ending in this book. But since the story made me laugh, kept me engaged and I found it entertaining, I won't let that naughty cliffhanger change my overall rating of this book.

If you like werewolves, witches, action and adventure then you'll like this book.

I give this book 4 sheep

Sheep Book Review: Bite Me by Shelly Laurenston

Bite Me
The Pride Series
By: Shelly Laurenston
Paranormal Romance

Livy Kowalski has no time for idiots. When you shapeshift into a honey badger, getting through life's irritants is a finely honed skill. Until she gets stuck housing her nutso cousin and dealing with her dad's untimely and unexplained demise.

That's where Vic Barinov comes in--or his house does. Vic can't step outside without coming back to find Livy devouring his honey stash and getting the TV remote sticky. It gets his animal instincts all riled up. But he'll have to woo her at high speed: all hell is breaking loose, and Livy is leading the charge. . .

Fans of this series are sure to enjoy keeping up with some of the previous characters. The author does a great job of bringing previous packs back into the mix, while creating a new storyline. Adding to that the unique humor and off the wall situations and you're sure to keep the pages turning on this heartfelt romance.

This is a series about shifters, so you're either going to get on board with that fact or not. For those that like it, these guys and gals are hard-hitting-in-your-face-animals. I'll admit, that took me some time to warm up to when I first started the saga. But adjust I did, and now I can enjoy all the fun right along with the cast of whacky characters.

I'll recommend that all newcomers start at the beginning of this series. While some previous books may have been "okay" to read as a standalone, Bite Me is really one you need to work up to. Our main characters both have a past and history and you'll see that in previous books as they move forward.
You have to know Livy to love her, cause she's a honey badger and they don't give a fu@$! That is your warning, strap in and get ready cause you're in for a shifter treat!

On top of all the fun these characters have, there's a lot of love and depth that's built. By the time our leads get to the climax, you're primed and ready! These two have a very different type of relationship and that's awesome. You can't have all your characters fall in love the same way, that won't work!

This is a good read for both PNR fans and shifter lovers alike. I'm sticking with this author for all the madness and I hope you will too!

Book Review: Drowning in Fire by Hanna Martine

Drowning in Fire (The Elementals #3)
by Hanna Martine
Mass Market Paperback, 352 pages
Expected publication: April 1st 2014 by Berkley Sensation

Hidden in the Hawaiian islands, there is magic pure enough to heal a broken heart.

In his last audience with the Senatus, Griffin hoped to establish a connection between his water-wielding race and the other elementals. Instead, he found himself drawn into a forbidden affair with the Chimeran general Keko. When it ended in a storm of fire and ice, Griffin was banned from the Senatus and Keko was stripped of her status.

Just as Griffin is given a second chance to prove himself worthy of a Senatus seat, he gets a call from Keko. Despite how it ended between them, she wants to hear his voice one last time before embarking on a suicide mission to save her people and redeem her name.

Despite her good intentions, members of the Senatus want her stopped—and Griffin volunteers to go after her. As he tracks his former lover through the untamed Hawaiian wilderness, she leads him straight to the source of all fire magic. But will the intense power they discover draw them back together or destroy them both?

Keko was a respected member of her people, moving up in the ranks to where she wanted to be until she had an affair with the wrong guy.

Griffin wants a seat on the Senatus and needs to work with Keko is order to learn the ways of the Senatus and her people. Things seem to be going well until he has an affair with her.

Keko was given the duty of showing Griffin the rules and how her people did things. She was also told to report back everything he said, did and anything that seemed strange. So she figured that to make him feel at ease and make it easier to get the info she needed from him, she would flirt and maybe use sex. But she didn't realize what a mistake that would be in the end.

Things turn bad after their affair. Keko loses her status and Griffin in banned from the Senatus. Later when Griffin is just about to get a seat on the Senatus, he gets a call from Keko telling him goodbye. She is going to try and redeem her name but what she plans to do could be a one way mission and Griffin goes after her.

The one thing I really enjoyed about this book was the dialogue, the fun banter between Keko and Griffin. They are quite the opposites, literally fire and water and that really worked for this story.

This book started out pretty good but by the middle things slowed down a bit and I ended up taking a break for most of the day before I picked it back up to read the rest and thankfully the book does pick back up towards the end. I always finish a book once I start reading it because I always hope if it seems a bit slow or I don't like parts of it, that it will have gotten better by the ending and made it worth the read and this one did just that.

If you're looking for a different type of paranormal romance then this might be a good book to try.

I give this book 3 sheep.

Interview: Robin Covington (Sex and the Single Vamp) Book Tour + giveaway

Robin and I are like twinsies...only different. She is a comic book nerd and writes about sexy vampires! Join us as we talk about Dean, Strikeback and X-Men, oh and vampires!
Sharon: Hello Robin! Welcome to the flock…drink this *shoves cup of Kool-Aid in Robin’s face* and sign this *shoves scroll of parchment paper in Robin’s face*

Robin: Thanks! *looks around* When do I get the secret handshake?

Sharon: At the end…if you survive…mwahaha…ha..ha. Moving on!

Sharon: You just released Sex and the Single Vampire. Can you tell our readers a little about it?
Robin: Oh man. This book is sexy and fun and I loved writing it. At its heart, VAMP is about two people who have loved each other for almost three hundred years and what happens when they finally decide to see if they can be together. But – of course – I threw in an underground criminal group that wants to kill the heroine, just to keep it interesting *grin*

Sharon: Three hundred years of pent up passion? I bet the death threat isn’t the only thing you added to make it interesting *hubba hubba*
RobinYou know me Sharon – I never miss the opportunity to complicate things with sex . . .

Sharon: You have many contemporary romances. What made you want to throw vampires into the mix?
RobinThis story idea had sat on my hard drive forever just waiting for the right time. I love paranormal romance and I was worried that I couldn't do it justice. But when my publisher put out a call for paranormal romances, I thought it was the best time for it. My editor was excited to work on it with me and it ended up being a great experience.
And – there is something so fun about being able to create my own world.

Katie: Did you bring Deacon with you? Does he have any friends? Names and numbers?

RobinDeacon did come with me but I can't seem to get him off the phone with Cici. But, Antonio is available and I could definitely hook you up.
Sharon: Wait! What about me!?
RobinUmm…I think you two are going to have to fight it out. Arm wrestling? Paintball battles? Candy Crush showdown? Antonio would say that he can handle more than one at a time…he’s done it before.
Lock and loaded baby! Let's do this.

Sharon: Do you have plans to write more stories featuring other supernatural creatures? Give us a hint at what might be coming next?
RobinI would love to write Antonio’s story. He’s Italian, 4oo years old and invented the term “depraved and debauched”. Need I say more?
Sharon: why yes, you do! You had me at depraved, but we’ll wait for the book ;)
RobinAhhh…Antonio. So complicated. He embraces all of the dark parts of being a vampire and lives to excess and enjoys booze, parties, men and women as the whim hits him. Love that guy.
Sharon: *sigh* Antonio...

Sharon: What is your favorite holiday to decorate for and on a scale of “see my pretty door” to “OMG! Did a Hallmark store explode in your house?”where do you fall?
RobinChristmas! I have compromised with the hubby and I don't put anything up until the day after Thanksgiving but once the turkey is done is on like donkey kong! I have 5 trees and twinkle lights on every railing and flat surface with garland. Every room gets the treatment. It takes me almost two days to get it all up.
Sharon: Now that is how it is done! Please tell me you use color lights?
RobinOnly on the trees in the kids areas. Otherwise, I’m a white light kind of girl.

Sharon: If you could own any piece of art in the world what would it be?
RobinI’m a little old-fashioned with my answer. I grew up with a coffee table sized book of Norman Rockwell paintings and I fell in love with his work – he conveys the hope of the post WWII America so well. I always loved the one called, “The Girl With the Black Eye” because I was that kid – disheveled and clearly post fight and sitting on the bench outside the Principals Office. It always makes me smile no matter what mood I am in. I have a reproduction in my office.
Sharon: I think every public school in NC has that in their office <G>

Sharon: If you won a chance to go on tour with any band which would it be?
