Book Review: The Second Coming (The Ascension Series Book 8) by SM Reine

Elise Kavanagh was once known as the Godslayer - a woman born to kill Adam, a man become God. But she defeated him and stepped into his role, taking her lifelong partner into the pantheon with her. Now she must navigate her mortal goals with her divine life, beginning with substantiating into an avatar to have James Faulkner's baby, and ending with vengeance. Book 8 of the Ascension Series.

Elise Kavanagh and James Faulkner have lived many different lives and have been gods for an eternity. James has asked Elise repeatedly to have a baby and expand their family and she finally gave in which lead them both to avatars to accomplish this goal. Even though they planned the aspects of their avatars, things never seem to go as planned.

Elise and James have led many different complications throughout Reine’s different series, either by being the lead characters or by quietly existing in the backgrounds of her stories. Each time they appear their characters take on more depth that really shows the imagination of the author. This book has opened up infinite possibilities for the Ascension series itself as well as many spin-off possibilities. It was one of the best-written works Reine has had to date.

The Lost Legends contains thirteen new stories from talented and award-winning authors, including Rachel Neumeier, Sarah Bale, Kristen Bickerstaff, Michael Hustead, Adam D. Jones, A.E. McAuley, E.S. Murillo, Madelin Pickett, Abigail Pickle, and Ryan Swindoll.

The Luck Stone by Kristen Bickerstaff
Aoife hated these stupid boots.

She cracked an eyelid open and dragged one ponderous shoe up into the air. She held the boot up until her leg trembled from the weight, then let it drop to the ground with a loud thunk. The iron sole clanged against the loose white rocks scattered around the quarry mainway, shocking Bran into jumping off of his perch on the boulder next to her. He shot her a baleful look, his dark eyebrows cranked down low.

“I don’t see why I had to wear these,” she complained. Even with the layer of leather between her and the iron, the soles of her feet itched abominably.

“They’re mule-kickers,” Fynn said from under the brim of his outlandishly large southern hat. She couldn’t even see his sharp features underneath the brim, tipped down as it was to shield his face as he napped. “It’s so you blend in. Well, as much as you can blend in. Not many with elvish blood this way, and you know how superstitious the folks in Grimnal can be. Can’t have potential clients turning us down on sight alone.”

Aoife ignored the comment about her appearance, though she did tuck a stray white lock of hair back under her kerchief. The tight braided coil of hair trapped under there itched too, and her own foolishly large hat trapped the sweat trickling down her scalp, making her feel grimy. She thought longingly of the last time she’d had a bath, before their ill-fated river job a month ago.

Blend in. She rolled her eyes. By the look of the menagerie of people hawking their wares on the quarry’s mainway, blending in was laughable. Between the hedgewitch cloaked in smoking incense (and not much else) and the merc whose stone-colored skin spoke of at least a drop of troll blood, she was not the oddest one here.

The hat did hide her dully-pointed ears, she had to admit, though there was no hiding her distinctive green-gold eyes. Or the thick strokes of her brand, white lines stark against the brown skin of her cheek, elegant in their cruelty. Aoife traced its familiar outline, a circle broken by a jagged slash. Even Grimnalians who’d never so much as smelled the bluebell-scented air of the Vyoathe Forest would know what it was. Only one sort was branded on the face in the so-called Civil States. Murderer.

I began telling stories when my middle school newspaper asked for fiction submissions. They accepted mine, and then I saw my words in print for the first time. Ever since, I’ve only wanted to be a writer. (It was a very important story about a dolphin outwitting a shark.)

Besides fiction, I’ve also done my time in the academy, where I lectured students, researched some of history’s more obscure figures, and published a thesis on medieval historiography that (somehow) is listed on Wikipedia as something authoritative.

I even wrote a board game or two, and then spent some time writing ads for businesses, big and small, and contributed to two books on creative writing.

But it’s all about the storytelling for me, and working with other writers to put The Lost Legends together has been nothing short of a dream project. Each story will take you on a new journey, carrying you on an adventure until you’ve reached the tale’s end and turn the page, tumbling into the next flight of fancy.

Book Review: C.A.E.C.O. (A novel of the Demon Accords – Book 15) by John Conroe

Demon Accords book 15. Combat is literally her middle name, Chimeric Adaptive Enhanced Combat Operator, but now Caeco Jensen works for the FBI, building a new life and trying to learn from a painful past. It’s hard to fit in when you are one of a kind, but maybe, just maybe, there’s a place for her in this world. That is if threats from off planet don’t ruin it first. Forging and protecting a new future with a her unique skillset won’t be easy, maybe almost as hard as making new friends.

Caeco hasn’t been around in the recent books of the demon accords series, and Conroe brings her back front and center in book 15 of the series. Caeco is a unique individual, who was raised in a lab and is a Chimeric Adaptive Enhanced Combat Operator. Lately, she has been putting her skills to work for the FBI and is hoping that her new SAC will listen to her instincts and use her abilities to help the team achieve their objectives.

A new mystery character is introduced in the story, that leaves Caeco thinking twice about many aspects of her personal and professional life. She is the outsider of the team, with special skills, her ability to talk with Omega and her connections with Declan and others from the school she struggles to fit in. Caeco and her team want to stop the aliens from destroying the earth and each member struggles to accept the help that Omega can offer them as well as the President of the United States. The character development and individuality that each received makes this book another winner.

Excerpt: Wonderland Academy: Book One by Melanie Karsak + giveaway

Wonderland Academy: Book One
by Melanie Karsak
August 27, 2019
Genres: Fairy Tales, Fantasy, Retelling, Young Adult
Welcome to Wonderland Academy. Don’t lose your head.

Getting into Wonderland Academy is easy:

You must be a little mad.

You must follow the white rabbit.

You must find the key to enter Wonderland.

You must not be named Alice or risk being beheaded by order of the Queen of Hearts.

We might have an issue with that last one.

My name may be Alice, but Wonderland Academy is everything my real life isn’t. Who wouldn’t want to learn how to ride a jabberwocky, train with a vorpal sword, cast spells using a teacup, or shapeshift into a fairy? As long as no one figures out my real name, I should be fine.

The only problem? Aden, the Queen of Hearts’ son, is quickly becoming my best friend. And then there’s Corbin. Brooding, surly, tattooed, and definitely not my type, I can’t stop thinking about him. But Corbin has secrets of his own, and Wonderland and secrets don’t mix.

How I’m going to pass my classes and protect my secret like my life depends on it is beyond me. But I better find a way. Because in Wonderland, no Alice is safe.

Wonderland Academy re-imagines the fantastical world of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland for a fresh, new adventure. Combining whimsy, magic, and a splash of steampunk, New York Times best-selling author Melanie Karsak invites you into this beautifully re-envisioned fairy tale adventure.

* * *

Wonderland Academy is a college-level academy novel. It contains a slow-burn (not rh) romance. The novel is clean aside from mild language. This is Book 1 in a planned trilogy. Book 1 ends on a cliffhanger (Frodo didn’t reach Mount Doom in a day, after all).

Trigger Warning: This novel also includes references to a school shooting.

EXCERPT:
Setting my bag in a chair by the window, I pulled on my coat. It was pouring. Drops rolled down the windowpane, distorting the view of the sidewalk below. As I pulled my jacket on, however, I noticed someone on the sidewalk below. He was looking up at the window. I couldn’t make him out clearly, but from what I could see, he was wearing some kind of period costume and a top hat. He had long, pale blond hair that almost looked white.

“You all think I’m a lunatic? There’s some guy standing outside in the rain in a Victorian get-up and top hat.”

“What?” Mom asked. “What are you talking about?”

“I don’t know. Just some rando guy standing in the rain,” I said then turned, zipped up my coat, and grabbed the bag.

Nurse Gilman stepped to the window and looked outside. “It’s really coming down,” she said, eyeing the sky. She then strained her neck to the left and right. “Your mystery man must have gone back inside.”

“He was right there,” I said.

A sick feeling rocked my stomach. No, no, no. He was there. Dammit, he really was there. I edged toward the window and looked outside. I was right. The man was standing right there, looking up at the window.

He waved at me.

“Where?” Nurse Gilman asked, looking up and down the sidewalk.

“There,” I said, motioning hesitantly.

“I must have missed him,” Nurse Gilman said with a shrug.

I stared at the man.

He waved again.

Dammit. Dammit. Dammit.

“Yeah,” I said. “Maybe they’re doing a show in the children’s wing or something,” I muttered then turned from the window.

I didn’t want Nurse Gilman to see my face.

Mom, however, caught my eye. Her eyebrows scrunched together as she gave me a hard look.

I dropped her gaze.

I absolutely, positively, did not want to have that conversation on the way home.

“I’m ready,” I told Mom.

“Good. Let’s get you the hell out of here.”

“Be well,” Nurse Gilman said. She motioned to the nurses’ station. The door to the waiting room unlocked with a click. Nurse Gilman motioned to us that we were free to go.

Mom and I headed down the dim hallway of the fifth-floor psych ward. The narrow hall felt like it was a million miles long. It wasn’t until we were safely inside the elevator that I finally exhaled.

“Your phone,” Mom said, handing it to me.

I had a few missing calls, messages from old friends, but there wasn’t anyone I wanted to talk to anyway. I stared at the screensaver, which had a picture of Nicholas and me. The photo had been taken just before homecoming, before everything went to shit. We’d gone for a hike that day. The autumn leaves in the background were bright orange and burnt red. We were both bundled up, our cheeks red, faces pressed together. We’d spent the entire hike planning a future that would never come to pass.

I turned off my phone and stuck it in my pocket.

Mom punched the elevator button for the ground floor.

I kept my eyes on the lights above the door, praying Mom wouldn’t ask anything.

It wasn’t until we’d passed the second floor that Mom whispered, “Lacey, are you seeing—”

“I’m fine. Really. I’m fine.”

She didn’t answer, which told me she knew well-enough I was not fine.

They’d been popping up in my periphery more frequently for the last two weeks. People who were there then not there. Flickers of light. Shadows that whispered. Otherworldy shapes. Their presence wasn’t anything new to me. While I was more prone to see them during times of stress, they’d been there all my life. I knew that if I really looked, I’d see them. It was better to ignore them.

A mermaid had taught me that.

Mom and I headed to the front of the hospital. I couldn’t wait to get away from the terrible hospital smell. A weird mix of the scents of bleach, chrysanthemums, green beans, and Band-Aids perfumed the place. It was enough to make a person gag.

Raining or not, I was relieved when the hospital doors opened. I inhaled the sweet scent of the rain-soaked air. Mom’s rusted-out Mustang sat waiting just outside.

“Okay. Let‘s run for it,” Mom called, and we sprinted to the car.

Holding my plastic bag above my head, I ran, flinging open the door of the vehicle. But just before I climbed inside, I cast a glance down the sidewalk.

The man was still standing there. He pulled something from his pocket and tapped on it. He waved to me, a broad smile on his face.

“Lacey, you’re letting the rain in,” Mom yelled.

I slipped into the car, slamming the door behind me.

Mom revved the engine then drove off, her nineties rock springing to life. I leaned forward and clicked off the music. The last thing I needed was the dulcet tones of Nirvana shouting at me post suicide watch.

Sighing, I leaned back into the seat and closed my eyes.

Why was I seeing them again?

The white-haired man had been pointing at a pocket watch. A pocket watch.

What in the hell did that mean?

I hadn’t meant to kill myself.

Not this time.

It figured. On the morning I’d been discharged from the psych ward, I was beginning to lose my mind.

Sheep Movie Review: Hellboy (2019)

Hellboy (2019)
Directed By: Neil Marshall
Written By: Andrew Cosby
Apr 12, 2019Cast: David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Daniel Dae Kim
Genre: Action & Adventure, Science Fiction & Fantasy
Rating: R (for strong bloody violence and gore throughout, and language)
Runtime: 120 minutes
Studio: Summit Entertainment
Hellboy is back, and he's on fire. From the pages of Mike Mignola's seminal work, this action packed story sees the legendary half-demon superhero (David Harbour, "Stranger Things") called to the English countryside to battle a trio of rampaging giants. There he discovers The Blood Queen, Nimue (Milla Jovovich, Resident Evil series), a resurrected ancient sorceress thirsting to avenge a past betrayal. Suddenly caught in a clash between the supernatural and the human, Hellboy is now hell-bent on stopping Nimue without triggering the end of the world.

Well, I'm a little pissed at myself. And not for the reason you think. I should know better than to listen to the critics. Just because people don't like a movie doesn't mean I won't.

My husband and I watched Hellboy (2019) on-demand and we both enjoyed it. I did go in with no expectations. And you can't compare Ron Pearlman's Hellboy to David Harbour's. Pearlman made a sexy Hellboy...Harbour's...kind of ugly. Pearlman's Hellboy was a higher budget Hollywood version. Harbour's resembles the canon Hellboy from the comics.

The 2019 version's story also has more of a canon comic book feel to it. There is even an appearance by Lobster Johnson!!  So if you don't compare the two, the new Hellboy movie is pretty fun. It has a lower budget and a ton more over-the-top gore. But I really liked the characters, Alice (Sasha Lane) and Ben (Daniel Dae Kim). I've always had a girl-crush on Milla Jovovich.

So, to all the haters of the movie...

It’s the summer of 2012 and Elizabeth Megalos is a disillusioned art-school grad getting by as a bank teller in St. Louis. One evening, she’s attacked by a possessed coworker and saved by a mysterious, wise-cracking sorcerer named Eddy. He drags Elizabeth and Hugh—a skeptical scholar of the occult—to Europe, where he introduces them to his three magical celebrity friends. Once there, Eddy explains the group’s mission: preventing a Demiurge—a creature out of Gnostic Christian mythology—from fulfilling the visions of doom in the Book of Revelation. The Demiurge has been drawing power from the misguided beliefs in the Mayan apocalypse and is set to start the destruction on Dec. 21st, 2012. Through ritual magic and a series of psychedelic experiences, the group learns that Elizabeth is the key to taking down the Demiurge, though she can’t imagine how she will be the one to stop Armageddon.

“OK. Seriously. Please. Tell me exactly who you are, what you’re doing, how you made my phone fly into your hand, and why the fuck my co-worker just assaulted me,” said Elizabeth, the last of her patience dwindling.

“You can call me Eddy,” he said. “The milk is for the protection spirit I called to keep us safe for now. As for your coworker… well, she’s possessed by a qlippoth, which is pretty much a vampiric assemblage of cravings, guilt, self-loathing, and a whole other mess of nasty emotional energies. Most are made when the sad and pathetic losers of the world jerk off to some of the sickest porn the bowels of the Internet can shit out. Obviously, there’s a fair number of these icky beasties around. This particular one’s been coalescing around your back alley. Probably feeding off of your used tampons or something. They like those. Used condoms and jerk-off rags too. Genital fluids are like bonbons for these things. And sometimes they’re able to possess people with very little emotional control and/or intelligence during certain astronomical phases. My guess is your coworker wasn’t exactly a shining example of emotional stability. As for the phone: involving the cops would just complicate things, so I used a little arcane prestidigitation to take it from you for the moment.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” asked Elizabeth.

“OK, we need to skip past the whole ‘Spirits? Magic? Are you crazy?’ shit because we’ve got a hungry, demon-possessed hippie trying to break in and drink our nether juices, and I for one don’t want that chick anywhere near my junk.”
