Excerpt: Stay at Castle Dracula…and Other Short-Short Stories by Jim Nemeth + giveaway

Stay at Castle Dracula…and Other Short-Short Stories
by Jim Nemeth
Genre: Horror Short Stories
Do you enjoy a good drabble? No, not America’s most popular word game—that’s Scrabble. No, not those cute, furry little creatures from Star Trek—those are tribbles. A drabble is a form of intense fiction writing consisting of 100 words. Not 100 chapters, not 100 paragraphs, nor even 100 lines. 100 words. Exactly.

Author Jim Nemeth loves the format and is an accomplished dabbler in drabbles. “Whenever I explain to friends what a drabble is,” Nemeth relates, “I get the exact same expression of disbelief: ‘100 words?’ In fact, I took these reactions and wrote a drabble about it, “Impossible Assignment,” which leads off the collection.”

Stay at Castle Dracula and Other Short-Short Stories, a chapbook, collects 26 tales, 23 of which are drabbles. With the three other stories, the author “splurged” and indulged himself with an additional 100-200 words.

Other tales of five score words include “Disgruntled,” where a joyous family Christmas celebration turns horrific when a little boy doesn’t get the toy he wanted; “Love Potion” relates what happens when a witch’s magic works too well. And in the title story, another young English traveler debates his decision in staying in Count Dracula’s centuries’ old castle.

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

“Why does Christy have to come over to play,” six-year-old Chloe asked in the petulant voice in which she exceled. “She’s ugly and I hate her!”

“Chloe!” the girl’s father shouted in reprimand. “Don’t talk like that. Christy may not be the prettiest of girls, but ‘beauty is only skin deep,’ as they say. It’s what’s inside a person that counts.”

Later that afternoon in her room, Chloe lay aside the dripping, red-drenched scissors with which she’d used to slice open Christy’s midsection. Closely examining its contents, she frowned in confusion. “I don’t see what’s so special about her insides…”

EXCERPT:
(from the short story, “Hands Clean: Afterburner”)
Perry, as he was better known, stood on a grassy hill, overlooking the expanse of the beach and the churning waves just past sunset. Warm fur rubbing against his ankles reminded him he wasn’t alone, and he looked down with a gentle smile. A black cat weaved her away around his legs, purring loudly and looking up at him expectantly.

“Calling you “Cat” sounds straight ridiculous, but you refuse to tell me your name.”

The cat meowed and he chuckled. “Fine. Just “Cat”, it is.” He lifted her into his arms and rubbed noses. “It’s not often I ask animals to do my dirty work, so I thank you and promise to feed you.” Perry locked eyes with the cat and spoke softly in her mind. “Do you remember the plan? Are you ready to strike? When you get to the bar, be sure to give me a visual.”

At her reassuring purr, he put her down and let her run to her destination. He kept his eyes trained on the huge wood door of the Blue Rose bar, which stood several yards from his position on the beach hill. Cat approached the bar’s entrance and sat on the walkway, patiently waiting, as she licked a paw. Soon enough, the heavy door swung open, and a laughing couple emerged from the bar. Cat darted inside the dimly lit front area and, within seconds, gave him the visual he needed.

Perry almost immediately spotted his target, seated at a table with a large man. She was unchanged, both in face and body, even after a millennium.

Toil and Trouble
by DCL Publications
Genre: romantic horror anthology
September 22, 2025

The brew is hot and bubbling over with romance and terror in this twistedly beautiful anthology that welcomes the darkness of horror and the temptation of love's veiled promises. Six remarkable tales from six incredible authors fill this book of dark shadows and ancient whispers.

Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble - by Jennifer Patricia O'Keeffe: Enchanted pastries and spell-brewed coffee make Esmerelda's sugar-dusted counter the city's most coveted haunt—until a dangerously charming newcomer slips into her shop, immune to her magic and unraveling her carefully guarded world. As his witch-hunter heritage threatens to burn her legacy to ash, Esmerelda finds herself torn between the threat of revenge from the witch hunter's ancestors and the intoxicating truth of the connection that they share.

Silverwood - by Lynn Hubbard: A lonely rancher's daughter finds her isolated Wyoming homestead upended when an amber-eyed stranger ignites a mud-splattered passion that defies reason—until his supernatural secret and the vengeful ranch hands hunting her force her to choose between the man who saves her and the monster who might destroy her. Torn between fierce protectors and forbidden desire, she must trust the very darkness that could shatter her world to survive the wild frontier's deadliest threats.

Ivy, Lichens and Wallflowers - by James Ryan: Marketing executive Hilda finds solace from her stifling corporate life and overbearing past in the quiet companionship of Miriam, a mysterious 19th-century marble statue in a city micro-park, only to discover their connection transcends stone when Miriam begins answering her handwritten notes through cryptic poetry left in return. As their forbidden connection deepens into an intoxicating dream-bound romance, Hilda uncovers Miriam's supernatural secret: she's a cursed thaumaturge sustained by stolen life force, forcing Hilda to confront whether love can survive the devastating cost of keeping her alive.

A Mirror to Die For - by Cindy Lewis Smith: A desperate woman finds solace in an antique mirror that whisks her nightly to 1880s Arizona, where a charming outlaw named Johnny Ringo fulfills every fantasy—until her jealous fiancé shatters the glass and vanishes, leaving her trapped in an asylum screaming that he is the real monster, a man who shouldn't exist: Dr. John Henry Holliday, the gambler who killed Ringo a century ago. Now, with "MPR" carved into her cell walls and time itself unraveling, she'll stop at nothing to prove her sanity by proving time travel is real—even if it means unleashing the very darkness that destroyed her.

Flight 1031: Cosmic Turbulence - by Julian Christian:
Diplomatic courier Sarah Martinez boards Flight 1031 expecting routine turbulence, not a Halloween dimensional rift that strands her at Germania International Airport—where the Greater German Reich has ruled since 1943 and perfected technology to harvest souls from parallel realities through consciousness-scanning machinery that pulses with seventeen-beat rhythms. Now trapped in a terminal that breathes like a living organism, Sarah must navigate a world where every passenger hides a secret and her resistance could either save her timeline or doom infinite versions of humanity to eternal enslavement in a Reich that spans all dimensions.

Dream a Little Dream - by Jae El Foster: After a near-death car crash rewires her brain, Sarah's nightmares bleed into reality: sugar on the counter forms glyphs, bats appear out of nowhere in broad daylight, and her own hands betray her—while the velvet-eyed stranger from her dreams appears in her waking hours, his urgency growing as Halloween's veil thins. Now, with her reality twisting into something surreal and an ancient language hijacking her voice, she must confront a dark truth: her soul isn't hers to keep, and the man who saved her in death is the very entity hunting her in life.

Read an Excerpt From ‘Dream a Little Dream’ by Jae El Foster

Sarah didn’t know where to run, where to hide, where to breathe. She drove until the city’s skyline dissolved into cornfields, until the morning thickened with minivans and convertibles carrying families on "ride in the country" escapes. Each passing car—a Jeep with muddy tires, a sedan with bike racks—anchored her to reality, the rubber soles of her sneakers still tingling with the phantom sensation of earth either holding her up or crushing her down.

A flash detonated behind her eyes: the muffled thud of dirt hitting wood, shovel after shovel, sealing her inside a coffin. She couldn’t see it, but she smelled it—the cloying stench of decay merging with rain-damp soil, the suffocating darkness pressing against her eyelids as the weight piled higher. The scent of worms and wet pine needles flooded her throat, thick as grave mold.

The vision snapped just as her car veered toward the shoulder. She wrenched the wheel hard left, tires screeching, a horn blaring from the sedan she’d nearly broadsided. Her hands locked on the steering wheel, knuckles bleaching bone-white, as she fought to drag air into her lungs. Slow. Nervous. Don’t die twice. The wreck’s ghost clawed at her ribs—she wouldn’t invite it back.

Ahead, a billboard loomed: MEMORY LANE. Beneath the town’s name, bold letters promised: Step into Memory Lane, where new memories are made! Sarah’s foot hovered over the brake pedal, ready to U-turn from the omen of that name, but her ankle refused to bend. Cemented. Her other foot slammed toward the brake—stuck. Panic surged as she crossed the town line, tires crunching over the painted border, but then the landscape unfolded: manicured lawns, white picket fences gleaming like fresh bone, and 1950s bungalows painted in cheerful pastels. A sigh escaped her—enchanted.

Chicanery, she thought, scanning the dollhouse-perfect homes. Porches draped in wisteria, hydrangeas bursting from flower beds, rocking chairs swaying in phantom breezes. It felt less like a town and more like a dream staged for tourists—a nostalgia trap with price tags hidden in the shutters. She gripped the wheel tighter, the vinyl seat sticky beneath her sweat-slicked thighs.

The yards deepened in their perfection: hedges trimmed to geometric precision, roses blooming in impossible symmetry, each white picket fence identical down to the last splinter. No cracks. No weeds. No life. The fences stood sentinel around empty yards, guarding homes with spotless windows that reflected nothing but sky.

She passed a brick schoolhouse with a rusted swing set, a park with a merry-go-round frozen mid-spin, a diner with "OPEN" glowing in neon, a barber pole coiled in red-white silence, a post office with mailboxes gleaming under noon sun. No children. No joggers. No bicycles leaning against fences. Since crossing into Memory Lane, she’d seen exactly one living thing: a crow pecking at a roadkill squirrel, its beak crimson.

"Where the hell is everyone?" she muttered, her voice raw as she scanned porches, windows, the empty stretch of road ahead. The only sound was the hum of her engine and the thump-thump-thump of her pulse in her ears.

Sarah’s hands left the steering wheel, fingers trembling as she tried to turn into a driveway for a U-turn. The wheel refused to budge—cemented. She settled back into the seat, watching it steer itself with unnatural precision. Her foot lifted from the accelerator, but the speed held steady, unwavering, until the car slowed on its own for a sharp right-hand turn onto University Boulevard. The road’s grip on her feet had vanished, yet the vehicle moved like a thing alive, hungry for the town square.

To her left, manicured university grounds sprawled beneath flowering trees, grand homes lining the boulevard like stage sets. Roses bloomed in impossible symmetry, hedges trimmed to razor edges. Sarah groaned at the street name—University Boulevard—its banality a slap in the face. Two blocks down, the car turned right onto Main Street, the tires whispering over asphalt that felt less like road and more like skin.

Ahead, the town square unfolded: businesses glowing with "Open" signs, windows spotless, a gazebo planted dead-center like a tombstone. No cars. No pedestrians. Not even a stray cat to break the silence. The air hung thick with the scent of cut grass and something sharper—ozone, like before a storm that never breaks.

Sarah’s car rolled into a parking spot near the gazebo. The seatbelt loosened with a hiss, the engine dying as the driver’s door swung open unbidden. "I don’t like anything about this…" she muttered, stepping onto pavement that felt unnaturally warm beneath her sneakers. The keys stayed in the ignition, but fear of theft never came—who would steal from a town with no one to steal?

The door shut behind her with a soft click, sealing her in the square’s suffocating quiet. She forced her breath slow, scanning the storefronts: two restaurants, a beauty parlor, a bank, antique shops, a used bookstore, and a theater dominating the square. Its marquee blazed in vintage bulbs: DREAM A LITTLE DREAM and SHE RISES AT NIGHT—titles she’d never heard, yet they hummed in her bones like half-remembered screams.

She turned toward the right-hand restaurant, heels clicking on the pavement. Instantly, its "Open" sign flickered and died. She froze, then pivoted toward the left restaurant—same result. The sign went dark as if snuffed by an invisible hand.

Sarah took a step forward, pulse hammering against her ribs. The air grew heavier, pressing into her lungs like wet soil. She didn’t need to test it again. The square wasn’t empty. It was waiting.

"What in the living hell…?"

Every storefront Sarah scanned flickered dark—the "Open" signs dying like snuffed candles—but the theater’s marquee blazed relentless: REEL AFTER REEL. Its sign burned bright despite the empty ticket booth, the glass doors yawning open onto blackness. Sarah’s skin prickled. Memory Lane felt wrong, but the theater pulsed with something hungrier, something that made her stomach drop like a stone in a well.

She stared at the theater, arms crossed tight against the chill. The marquee’s promise—DREAM A LITTLE DREAM / SHE RISES AT NIGHT—curdled in her gut. Of all places, this was where she never wanted to set foot. Yet the longer she stood frozen, the more the building breathed. Orchestra strings swelled—violins sawing a tune from silent-film days—though the theater’s modern facade held no projector room. Then came the chatter: phantom voices lining up for tickets, laughter echoing off empty pavement.

"Nope…" she muttered, squaring her shoulders. "Fuck this." She bolted for her car, sneakers slapping the pavement. The driver’s door handle wouldn’t budge—locked, keys glinting in the ignition like a taunt.

10th Anniversary release: The Dark Will End the Dark by Darrin Doyle + read the new story here!

Darrin Doyle is celebrating the 10th anniversary of his story collection The Dark Will End the Dark with a cool new release and a brand new story included. The stories all revolve around body parts, and they are incredibly unsettling.

“In these haunting stories, our gods are dead, our beloved are ghosts, our body parts are burned, deformed, missing, even fed to our children – and still we humans go on hoping, wanting, hurting, and hungering.”
--Kelcey Ervick, author of The Keeper

The Dark Will End The Dark
by Darrin Doyle
October 7, 2025
A group of tugboat passengers grapples with a disturbing loss. A record-holding hiccuper confronts his condition—and a troubling secret. A wife wonders what to do when her husband’s head stops working—but his body stays alive. A man struggles with the memory of the time he saw his friend swallowed whole by a neighborhood girl with supernatural powers.

In this classic set of Midwestern Gothic stories by Darrin Doyle, we see the strange hold hands with the familiar—and seem all the more strange as a result. A set of tall tales (and medium-height ones) told with Nabokovian prose, this stunning and visceral collection by the author of The Beast in Aisle 34 will linger long after the last page.

Originally published in 2015, this revised tenth anniversary edition features a new introduction by American Mythology author Giano Cromley.

Reviews
"Doyle's stories are lamentations, demented fairy tales, and quests for enlightenment in which the author explores bodily dysfunction and ungainly lust while familial love hums in the background. In the manner of George Saunders, Doyle uses his smart, light language to lift readers above the darkness of shame and humiliation that brings so many of his characters to their knees."
— Bonnie Jo Campbell, author of Once Upon a River and American Salvage, finalist for the National Book Award

"Darrin Doyle's a mad scientist who has stitched together a hauntingly beautiful collection from tattered body parts and a strange, ragged heart. It is only after you've been defibrillated by the stories in The Dark Will End the Dark that you realize you've been dozing through the days. Doyle's got his fingers on the pulse of our brave new American psyche and his writing blazes electric."
— Jason Ockert, author of Wasp Box and Neighbors of Nothing

"The human body, logic, and language are all rent apart and remade dazzlingly anew in these fourteen stories. With the droll fabulism of Nikolai Gogol and the moral heft of Shirley Jackson, Doyle's characters face problems both surreal and all-too-real...Fantastical yet close to the bone, these stories are both wounding and wondrous."
— Monica McFawn, author of Bright Shards of Someplace Else, winner of the Flannery O' Connor Award

"Like the Dadaist collages of Raoul Hausmann, The Dark Will End the Dark presents a startling disjunction of body parts—head, foot, mouth, neck—arranged so artfully and terrifyingly by Darrin Doyle that one is confronted with the human body's beauty and brokenness. In these haunting stories, our gods are dead, our beloveds are ghosts, our body parts are burned, deformed, missing, even fed to our children—and still we humans go on hoping, wanting, hurting, and hungering."
— Kelcey Ervick Parker, author of For Sale By Owner

Darrin Doyle
Face

Another morning, another foggy mind clinging to the silky threads of dream. Daylight merely a hope, an assumption. Daylight an arrival counted upon for no reason other than each day preceding.

The man washed at the sink. He lathered his cheeks and dragged the razor over the skin. He heard a prickly scraping sound as the blade shore the stubble.

The man tried to recall a moment in his life when he wasn’t standing at the bathroom mirror. Memories floated like vapor. Was he a father? Yes, it seemed so. Were his children boys? Girls? Either way they were not here, either moved or dead or never born. Would he see them again? Yes or no, it was a fifty-fifty proposition. Those odds had a nice balance.

Symmetry in the natural order. Day and night. Light and dark. His face. The distance between eyes. Width and length of nostrils. Equality of the lips.

His wife’s face – if indeed he had a wife – had been beautiful in her symmetry. The lovely harmony of her teeth when she smiled, wrinkling her cheeks which in turn wrinkled the skin around her eyes. The connectivity – yes, it had been inscribed upon her features.

The children had hugged and laughed with him. His wife had hugged and laughed with him. He had reciprocated. Theirs had been a world of connection and balance.

He rinsed the excess lather. He brushed his teeth with a motion that resembled the whorls on his fingerprints.

His life began each morning. Every morning he brushed away the dust of sleep, the encroachment of decay.

In the mirror, the man noticed the aberration.

His left eye had scooted or slid, he didn’t know. The eye was centered, socket and all, on his cheek. He tried without success to push the eye back where it had been, where it had resided his entire life. (Unless, perhaps, it had done this before?)

His face no longer resembled his face. Or it looked like his face but a comical or tragic version. A dis-repaired self, one not ready for the stage of life.

The man’s nose and mouth had also switched positions. His face appeared to scream without sound, then to frown. His nostrils flared while shaving lotion burned his nose hairs.

He wondered if he should cry out. He wondered if it would make any difference if he cried out.

Would his wife come rushing up the stairs? Would his children trail behind?

If she flung open the door, what would she see?

Would she be able to mentally reassemble the man’s face – the face she had presumably fallen in love with? Would she believe that this man was, indeed, her husband?

Or would the man find his wife’s face now unrecognizable?

Her features the same, but out of order. A chaos of identity like a broken vase. Her nose jutting from her temple; eyes looking out from her chin; lips vertical and set where her nose used to be.

His children would huddle behind her, their faces puzzles unassembled.

Together they would be a collection of strangers frightened.

The man would turn calmly back toward the mirror, flip up his shirt collar and loop his necktie. There would be no reason to panic. This sort of thing was bound to happen eventually.

The family would return to their respective rooms, their private locations in the universe.

The house would remain silent, as it was now and had always been.

And the man would stand at the mirror, securing his tie, waiting for order.

Tales from Planet Sanos - Taken by the Alien Merking Excerpt
“Well, humanity f*cked around. And now, it’s time to find out.”
Brooke raised her eyebrows at the mumbled comment from the back of the craft as the landing capsule hummed with anticipation. Or perhaps it was just the vibration of the engines straining against the unknowns of Planet Sanos’ atmosphere. Brooke’s gaze was fixed on the hazy mostly-blue orb growing larger on the viewscreen, her mind a whirlwind of calculations and contingencies.
“All right, ladies,” Brooke announced, her voice steady despite the flutter in her chest. “We’re programming the final approach. Once we land, you know what to do. We’ve trained for this. You’ll each meet with negotiators and leaders of the different species on Sanos and secure a future for humans.”
“Captain, are we sure that’s wise? We don’t know much about any of these species beyond what they provided to command.” Brooke recognized the voice of another captain on the mission and allowed herself a thin smile in return.
“It’s a risk, but we need to show them we’re serious. One leader to another. It’s why we’re all the same rank with the same training. It’s our only hope for this mission. And our only hope as a species.”
The youngest of their sevensome chimed in, her fingers dancing across the touchscreen as the capsule continued its descent. “And if they’re not as… diplomatic as we hope?”
“Then we adapt,” Brooke replied, the certainty in her voice belying the knot in her stomach. “We’ve trained for this. Our survival depends on it.”
The capsule shuddered slightly as it pierced the upper atmosphere. The buffeting was a reminder of their precarious situation. Brooke’s eyes remained locked on the horizon of the alien world, her thoughts straying to the generations aboard the USS Legacy hovering above Sanos. Their lives hung in the balance of this mission.
The next to final member of their team leaned back in her seat. “We’re making history either way. First human envoys to an alien world.”
Brooke nodded, the weight of their mission pressing on her. “Let’s make sure it’s a history worth telling.”
The capsule’s artificial intelligence, a soothing voice that had become a constant companion, interrupted their exchange. “Atmospheric entry successful. Preparing for landing sequence.”
Brooke’s heart rate ticked up a notch. The time for theory and training was over. It was time for action. She unstrapped from her seat, her movements fluid and purposeful. “Once we’re on the ground, it’s showtime. Remember, we’re here to secure a future, not just for us, but for every soul aboard the Legacy.”
As the capsule descended, the blue of the sky gave way to a landscape of verdant jungles and shimmering oceans. It was a world untouched by the blight that had consumed Earth, a reminder of what they were fighting for.
The landing was smooth, the capsule settling onto the alien terrain with a gentle thud. Brooke took a deep breath, steeling herself for the encounter ahead. She turned to her compatriots, her eyes shining with determination. “This is it. We’ll make contact and assess the situation and bring home a win for the humans of the Legacy.”
With that, Brooke stepped towards the airlock, her hand resting on the door controls. The future of humanity hinged on the next few hours, on her ability to negotiate with a species they barely understood. But as the door slid open and she took her first step onto Planet Sanos, Brooke felt a surge of hope.
This was their chance, their only hope, and she would seize it with every ounce of strength she possessed. The fate of Earth was in her hands, and she would not falter.
The first breath of Sanos’ air filled Brooke’s lungs with a scent so pure, it felt like drinking in the essence of an untouched world. Exquisite beaches stretched before her. The sand was a pristine white that seemed to glow against the cerulean expanse of the ocean. Lush jungles pressed at her back, a vibrant tapestry of emerald that whispered secrets and stories untold.
But there was little time for awe. Humanoid figures emerged from the foliage. Their scales shimmered in the sunlight, a mosaic of blues and greens that confirmed their identity—Quxoni. They approached with a regal bearing, gesturing for Brooke to follow. She cast a final glance at the landing capsule, where the other five human females tasked with liaising with the other species of Sanos stood poised, their expressions a blend of worry and pride.
Brooke’s escort led her to a massive tent, its fabric billowing in the gentle sea breeze. As she crossed the threshold, her eyes fell upon a figure that commanded the space and attention. This must be their chief negotiator, though nothing in the dossier about the Quxoni could have prepared her for the reality of his presence. Towering and muscular, with long, flowing blue hair and bright green eyes, he was a vision of otherworldly allure. A sensation, undeniably primal, stirred within her, a pull that was both disconcerting and exhilarating.
“Welcome to Sanos,” the male’s voice rumbled, a melody of bass notes that resonated in her chest. “I am Zetron Kallithar. You will negotiate with me.”
Brooke met his gaze, her own voice steady. “Thank you for receiving me. I am Captain Brooke Harris.”
His lips quirked into a half-smile that seemed both a challenge and an invitation. “Curious, that you came alone. Only seven females to negotiate for the future of your people. Is this a display of trust… or desperation?”
She returned the smile, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Perhaps it’s a bit of both. But I assure you, we’re not as helpless as we seem.”
“Our scientists tell us that your planet is dying,” he retorted. “Your people are hungry. And your government has allocated a portion of the last of your people’s resources to sending you to negotiate with the species of Sanos. Ostensibly to beg for assistance. That seems pretty helpless to me.”
“Your scientists may be right,” Brooke repeated, keeping her composure as she walked towards him. Zetron cocked his head and moved slightly, taking a step as he gestured to her to follow him. “But we humans have a saying.”
“Which is?”
“We may be down, but that doesn’t mean we’re out.” Brooke’s lips twitched.
“Interesting,” Zetron murmured as he padded along next to Brooke. “Even with the extreme difficulties of your people, you remain hopeful.”
“What other option do we have?” Brooke glanced at him with a brow quirked.
Before Zetron could respond, the ground trembled beneath their feet. A cacophony of explosions filled the air, followed by the staccato zing of phaser fire. The tent walls shuddered but held firm against the onslaught, protecting them fully despite their gauzy appearance. Handy. Brooke’s heart thundered, instincts screaming for action.
Her hands itched for a weapon and she glanced around the space searching for one, but the tent was sparse save for a few ornate cushions and a low table. Zetron’s eyes met hers, a flash of concern crossing his features.
“Seems we have unwelcome guests,” he remarked, his tone betraying no panic, only a calm readiness.
Brooke’s mind raced. “Who are they?”
Zetron’s gaze darkened. “The anti-alien faction, most likely.”
“The anti-alien what?”
Another explosion rocked the tent, closer this time.
“Now is not the time,” Zetron yelled, betraying a hint of the worry in his voice.
Brooke’s survival training kicked in and she dropped to her knees, sweeping the ground with her hands, searching for anything buried within the sand that she could use as a makeshift weapon.
But she came up empty-handed. Dammit.
As phaser fire continued to rain down, Brooke knew their initial meeting had taken an unexpected turn. The fate of her people and the potential alliance with the Quxoni now hinged on their ability to survive the onslaught together. She locked eyes with Zetron.
Zetron’s voice sliced through the chaos, a command rather than a request. “We must move, now!” Before Brooke could fully process his words, he bolted to her.
“Wait!” she yelled, but it was no use. Within seconds, she found herself cradled against his chest, his powerful arms securing her against him. In another few seconds, Zetron hoisted her over his shoulder effortlessly and ran from the explosions.
The world blurred as he bolted toward the rear of the tent, the fabric parting before them.
Brooke’s heart pounded in time with Zetron’s strides, the erratic rhythm of phaser fire echoing in her ears. She caught glimpses of the battle raging around them—the seven species that had come to meet them clashing with unseen assailants.
They quickly reached the ocean’s edge, the waves lapping at the shore. Zetron didn’t break stride, his gaze fixed on the horizon as he entered the water. Brooke’s breath hitched as the cool liquid enveloped them, a stark contrast to the heat of battle.
“Hold your breath,” Zetron instructed, his tone leaving no room for argument. She complied, filling her lungs with air just as they submerged.
Underwater, the world transformed. The sounds of battle muted to a distant hum, replaced by the serene gurgle of the ocean. Schools of iridescent fish darted past, their colors a vibrant testament to the life thriving beneath the waves. Brooke’s eyes stung from the saltwater, but she refused to let go of the awe that beheld her.
Zetron’s pace never faltered, transforming from a rapid gate to a racing swim as his legs transformed into a glittering tail. His arm muscles and tail worked in harmony to propel them forward. Brooke’s lungs began to burn, the initial lungful of air rapidly depleting.
This is it, Brooke thought to herself. The grand plans of humanity to resurrect itself are about to be blown.
Just as she teetered on the edge of panic, Zetron halted, his lips meeting hers in a kiss that was as startling as it was lifesaving.
Air flooded her mouth, a precious gift that eased the ache in her chest. The kiss was clinical, devoid of passion, yet Brooke couldn’t ignore the undeniable spark that ignited within her. Zetron’s eyes held hers, a silent promise that they would survive this ordeal.
Beneath the surface, the world was a shimmering dance of light and shadow. Zetron’s arms and tail, powerful and sure, continued to propel them through the water with an ease that spoke of his aquatic nature. Brooke clung to him, her heart racing from the adrenaline and the unexpected intimacy of their escape. Each time her lungs screamed for air, Zetron’s lips found hers, offering sustenance in a kiss that was more a lifeline than a lover’s caress.
The kisses were quick, efficient—but not without effect. With each shared breath, Brooke felt a connection grow, a realization that they were in this together. She couldn’t deny the thrill that coursed through her, a heady mix of fear and excitement, as they moved as one through the alien ocean.
Finally, the water around them lightened, the deep blues giving way to the vibrant turquoise of shallower waters. Zetron angled them towards a sliver of sand that cut through the ocean. The island was small, fringed with palm-like foliage that swayed gently in the breeze, a deserted paradise that seemed untouched by the chaos they had left behind.
As they neared the shore, Zetron’s hold on Brooke shifted. He waded in the shallow water as he guided her onto the shore. She stumbled, her legs unsteady after their underwater journey, but his grip was firm, supporting her until she found her balance.
“Almost there,” he assured her, his voice a low rumble.
Brooke nodded, her gaze locked on the beach ahead. She took a step, her booted feet sinking into the soft sand beneath the water. Another step, and another, until her knees buckled and she fell forward, crawling the last few feet onto dry land.
Brooke collapsed onto the sand, her breaths coming in ragged gasps as she recovered from their ordeal. But as her breathing steadied, a sudden sense of urgency compelled her to turn back, to see the man—or rather, the Quxoni—who had saved her life.
What she witnessed took her breath away once more. Zetron waded in the shallows, the water lapping around him, as his form underwent a stunning transformation. The iridescent scales that had covered his body during their swim receded, leaving only a sporadic few across his form. His physique shifted slowly, the streamlined elegance of his aquatic tail melting away to reveal the powerful, muscular form of a man in his prime.
His bright green eyes, always alert and intense, seemed to glow even brighter against the backdrop of his now-humanoid features.
Brooke watched, transfixed, as his transformation completed leaving behind a man who was both awe-inspiring and strangely familiar. She realized, with a jolt, that she had held her breath, and she let it out in a rush.
“Holy shit,” she murmured to herself. “Who knew our would-be allies were so fucking hot?”
