Comic Review: Bad Blood issue #1

BAD BLOOD #1Writer: Jonathan Maberry
Artist: Tyler Crook
Genre: Horror
Publication Date:December 31, 2013
Format: FC, 32 pages; Miniseries
Getting bitten by a vampire pissed him off. Seeing his best friend brutally slaughtered started a war.

Trick was a typical college student—sort of—until vampires attacked. Then he found out his blood was poison to the bloodsuckers. And Trick will do anything to eradicate them.

* His blood kills!A vampire tale with an unlikely hero!

* Art by Eisner Award–winning Tyler Crook (B.P.R.D., The Sixth Gun, Petrograd).

This isn’t your typical vampire story. The hero, Trick, has cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. The comic is narrated by Trick and he catches us up on his situation and how he is handling things. Basically he isn't, he is ready to give up. We get introduced to his best friend Kyle who refuses to treat Trick any different and wants him to fight. Then things turn ugly. A vampire calling himself The Prince of Blood, son of the Goddess of Shadow attacks Trick.

This is a horror story on many levels. The main character must fight death from an inside as well as an outside force. Will his vengeance to go after the vampire that destroyed his life help fuel the fight against the cancer also destroying him? Maberry does an excellent job of portraying a young man stricken with cancer. The use of black humor by Trick and his friend as a way to cope along with the artwork and colors used shows a realistic and respectful picture of what his life is like. This horror aspect of the story doesn’t get too heavy and is offset by an even worse horror Trick must face which gives him a reason to fight for his life in more ways than one.
A great start to a new horror series.

  1. It has been a long time since I have read a comic book. I used to read all the Fantastic Four and Spider Man. I love that comics keep up with the current trends and this one sounds worth checking out. Have a great weekend, Sharon.

    1. I adore comics. But I don't read any of the superhero ones. I like the urban fantasy comics :) Dark Horse and Valiant have tons of that type. Hope you have a great weekend too! (and it involves reading )
