Guest Post: Dani Harper - How Chickens Keep Me Sane + giveaway

While I can usually write anywhere, I wrote Storm Crossed – the latest installment of the Grim Series – largely at the kitchen table by the window. For some reason, it became my favorite place to work, my go-to place for inspiration, and the location of my greatest word output. Was it the lighting? The room to spread out my notes? The limitless availability of coffee? Or was it the calming pastoral scene of a large flock of chickens foraging freely in the yard?

Maybe some of those things. Maybe all of them. But what about those voices I kept hearing underneath my window? I’ve been wondering about that ever since….
………………………………

RECON TEAM 7 – TEAM LEADER EARL REPORTING

DAY 63 – Betty and Mildred are posting lookout while our spotter, Mrs. Beardsley, and her team carefully move into position. Today’s mission is to get a look inside the north window of the house and gather further intel.

OBJECTIVE: Determine why the Domesticated Treat-Bringer (DTB) isn’t spending as much time outside with the flock.

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED SO FAR: Thanks to a successful covert operation by Priscilla (who pretended to be sick in order to get taken into the house), we now know that the window belongs to a treat prep area known as “The Kitchen”. DTB sits beside said window daily, accompanied by a glowing device known as “The Laptop”, alternately known as “This Damned Computer”. DTB spends a lot of time pressing buttons on it and talking to it, sometimes even yelling at it. I suspect it may be alive, and has usurped the flock’s rightful place as DTB’s reason for existence, and thus disrupted the natural order of things...

The hens have now positioned themselves on the back steps beneath the window, cleverly appearing to sun themselves. It took most of the night to calculate the correct number of chickens required to lift the spotter so her eyes would be just above the sill. We don’t want to reveal ourselves to DTB, or accidentally gain the attention of the neighbors across the alley.
There she is! From my perch on the grain bin at the back of the yard, I can see DTB enter the kitchen. I wave to Betty, who bobs her pompommed head up and down to signal Mrs. Beardsley. The team springs into action – wait, wait, something’s not right here. The idea was to put the largest hen, Snowball, on the bottom, but they’ve put skinny little Wilma there. There’s no way this is going to – it’s too late, they’re going for it. Climb, Mrs. Beardsley, CLIMB!

The column of chickens sways like a delphinium in a windstorm, but their brave leader has clawed her way to the shaky top. She’s peering into the window. She’s waving to us. She’s –

Call the medic, Mildred. We’ll try again tomorrow.

DAY 97 – It’s taken a valiant effort, and the sacrifice of many feathers and more than a few eggs, but we finally have our answer. Our DTB is a WRITER. This comes as a shock to many of us, I know, but we must maintain our dignity and accept the difficult fact that DTB’s current novel is always going to take first priority. (Harriet, stop crying. If it makes you feel any better, DTB’s mate is in much the same situation...)

However, there IS an upside to all of this. It’s very apparent that DTB has taken on this heavy responsibility for the sole purpose of providing a better life for us. You’ve all been enjoying the new heated watering bowls, I assume? The 20-pound bag of premium dried mealworms? The fluffy nestbox cushions?

In order to continue to enjoy such bounty, our duty is clear. We must do everything in our power to take good care of our writer!

Priscilla has come up with a schedule to ensure that there are always happy, playful hens cavorting in front of the kitchen window during the writer’s working hours. Mrs. Beardsley, you and your team are up first. Yes, yes, take Wilma, just prop her up against something so she looks natural. Stanley, you’re going to do your famous rock star strut as a backdrop. Meanwhile, Salty, Pepper, and Cheeks – we want your very best eggs.

Speaking of eggs, the principle is the same. The most contented and relaxed hens produce the most eggs. In like fashion, our DTB must be the happiest, most relaxed, and therefore most productive writer there is.

Remember: Greater success for her, means bigger and better goodies for us!

………………………………

So, maybe it happened, or maybe I fell asleep at the laptop (yes, there’s precedent for that…). The one thing I know for sure is that my chickens are good for my mental health. They provide me with a lot of entertainment and a reason to leave the laptop and go outside for a few minutes. And sometimes, as in my previous novel, Storm Warned, a chicken or two wanders into the story!

PS - For your own mental health, have fun entering my giveaway below!

Heir to a noble fae house, Trahern is forced to watch helplessly as his twin brother is cruelly changed into a grim—a death dog—as punishment for falling in love with the wrong person. Trahern doesn’t believe love exists, but he will do anything to keep his brother alive—even join the Wild Hunt and ride the night skies of the human world.

Lissy Santiago-Callahan believes in love but has no time for it. She’s busy juggling her career as an academic and her home life as a single mom to a young son with Asperger’s. Her hectic life in sleepy Eastern Washington is made even more chaotic with the sudden arrival of a demanding fae and his unusual “dog.”

Mortal and immortal have nothing in common, and the attraction between Lissy and Trahern surprises them both. But when their desire places Lissy and her child in the path of a deadly faery feud, will the connection last, or will their separate worlds prove too great a divide?

LEGEND ∙ LORE ∙ LOVE ∙ MAGIC
The fae are cunning, powerful and often cruel. The most beautiful among them are often the most deadly. Now and again, the unpredictable residents of that mystical land cross the supernatural threshold…

In this enchanting romance series from Dani Harper, the ancient fae come face-to-face with modern-day humans and discover something far more potent than their strongest magic: love.

Exclusive Excerpt: Storm Crossed by Dani Harper

STORM CROSSED by Dani Harper

covers, paranormal romance, The Grim series, Dani Harper, fae

A fae who doesn’t believe in love.

A mortal who has no time for it.
And a desire that defies everything they know.

Some people are counting the days until Christmas. Usually, I do too, but this year I’m excitedly counting down the days until my newest release on January 9th. I can hardly wait to share Storm Crossed with my readers! This is the 4th stand-alone novel in my Grim Series.

While many people grow up associating faeries with the tiny benevolent beings of children’s picture books, I learned early from my Welsh gramma that the fae are not little. They are not cute. And they are definitely not nice!

Rather, the fae are cunning, powerful and often cruel. The most beautiful among them are often the most deadly. Hidden far beneath the mortal world, the timeless faery realm plays by its own rules—and those rules can change on a whim. Now and again, the unpredictable residents of that mystical land cross the supernatural threshold…

And that’s where my own stories begin. The Grim Series brings ancient faery legends into modern-day America, to people unaccustomed to dealing with these alluring beings. People who may be unaware of this cardinal rule: NEVER TRUST A FAE!

That rule was both underscored and bent in Storm Crossed. As a writer, I’m used to my characters being unruly. It’s not uncommon for them to disregard my carefully constructed plot and veer off in another direction entirely. But the characters of Storm Crossed truly surprised me, and legend collided with love...

Today I’m excited to visit one of my all-time favorite places: I Smell Sheep. It’s like my home away from home. I’ve brought along an exclusive excerpt for all my sheeply friends, plus a one-of-a-kind giveaway to enter!

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT for I SMELL SHEEP
“I explained to Fox that you’d like to be his magic teacher,” said Lissy. “And he didn’t quite understand, so I used a movie he knows to help make the point. I don’t suppose you’ve seen Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone?”

Trahern frowned. “Who is Harry Potter? Is another sorcerer seeking to interfere with the child?”

“No, no, no. Harry Potter is a character from a famous series of books written by J.K. Rowling. He’s a little boy who finds out that he’s really a wizard and gets invited to attend a wizarding school. They made the whole series into eight wonderful movies—those are stories you watch instead of reading, kind of like a play.”

“A form of entertainment,” he supplied.

“Yes! The problem is, I could never get Fox to watch more than one of them.”

Her words brought up a wealth of questions, but Trahern forced himself to focus on the issue. “Why would that be a problem?”

“Fox just wasn’t very interested in Harry and his exciting magical adventures. The only character he really liked was Hagrid, the man who talked to animals.” She sat on the edge of the couch with her hands folded on her knees. “You know, a little of it might be because Hagrid lives by himself in a house near the forest. Fox would be very attracted to that—he does better with peace and quiet, and the fewer people around, the better. But most of all, my son definitely has a thing about animals.”

“A thing?”

“An affinity. It’s more than just liking animals, he’s comfortable with them. Fox would really rather be with animals than people.”

“So he has said to me.”

“Well, he’s also mentioned more than once that they talk to him. I made the mistake of chalking that up to a child’s imagination. Now I think that he really can communicate with them, all of them, just like he seems to do with your brother.”

Trahern committed Lissy’s words to memory. “Knowing such details may prove helpful as I instruct him.”

“I just don’t want you to be disappointed if he isn’t interested in your instruction.”

“Any disappointment I might experience will be the least of our concerns. I must find a way to encourage Fox to learn. And I must make a beginning.” They stood, and he took a step toward the staircase. Stopped. “Do you require your son to remain in his room?”

“Of course not! He ate supper, and then he said he wanted to play with some of his toys. That’s pretty normal for a nine-year-old.” She shrugged. “And his room is kind of a sanctuary for him—he likes it a lot.”

“This night, with such an auspicious moon, I would like to work with him outside. If he is willing, of course,” he added quickly. “We would remain close to your home, and—” Trahern thought for a long moment. “It is possible that I may be more successful in gaining Fox’s attention if you are not present. Will that cause you concern?”

She shook her head. “Not at all. I trust you. How about our backyard? It’s not very big, but it’s completely private, and there’s even a fire pit if that’s something you need. Although it’s pretty small, too.”

I trust you. He heard little else. Words possessed power, and these were words Lissy had not spoken before. The truth in them shook his senses. Trust was no light thing between mortal and fae, but he hadn’t been expecting the relief that washed through him like a cool mountain stream, and a kind of giddiness took hold. Before he formed the thought, he’d already pulled Lissy to him and pressed his lips to hers.

Sight and sound fell away, leaving a world composed solely of subtle sensations. They were no less powerful for their simplicity. Lissy’s delicate breath against his cheek and the spicy-sweetness of her mouth. The warmth of her skin and the softness of her hair. He nuzzled her face and throat, kissing, licking, indulging in her scent that had so captivated him. Her arms slid around his neck and pulled him close, even as he molded her gently rounded body to his angular one as tightly as he dared. By all the stars, he wanted more, all, everything—

Something hit the side of his head. He barely gave it any heed before several more somethings pelted him in quick succession—and stung like fire-bees! Trahern pulled back mid-kiss, instinctively placing his body between the mysterious attack and Lissy, just in time to be hit squarely in the center of the forehead. He threw up a spell, and a dozen small objects struck an invisible wall and clattered to the floor.

Acorns?

“It’s about time ya came up fer air, ya lecherous son of Oak!”

Ranyon stood on the back of the living room couch, twiggy hands planted on his hips, his strange blue cap on backward and his gnarled face screwed up into a frown of epic proportions. “You’d best be steppin’ away from her!”

Self-control and discipline were the greatest powers a master sorcerer possessed, and Trahern found himself exerting a great deal of both to keep from tossing the little ellyll out the nearest window. “I see no reason for your concern,” he began as soon as he got reliable control of his voice. Too late. Lissy had already marched around him and confronted her friend practically nose to nose.

“What on earth do you think you’re doing, and why are you in my house?”

“Well, no one answered the door, now did they? I looked in the window fer fear that ya might be in danger, and here ya are snoggin’ with a fae!” he sputtered. “He’s Tylwyth Teg—yer lucky he didn’t steal yer breath like a shadowcat!”

“Ranyon! I can’t believe you’d say such a thing!” She thrust her palm out, displaying the blue symbol. “I trust my child with this man, and you yourself said Trahern could not break his oath.”

“Well, I didn’t say he couldn’t break yer heart, now did I?” The ellyll folded his arms in front of his bright-blue shirt and harrumphed loudly.

Her voice rose. “Listen, mister, I’ll damn well snog with whomever I want to, and it’s none of your business!”

“None o’ my business? None o’ my business?” he shouted, and threw his hat to the floor. “Lissy, darlin’, ya said yerself we’re family.”

“Then you should be happy for me! For the love of little fishes, my own mother’s been giving me a bad time about not trying harder to meet men. Now you’re upset because I’m actually enjoying a little male companionship?”

“No, I’m givin’ ya the fifth degree because he’s not a man, he’s a fae!”

“It’s third degree, buddy. And you don’t have the right to—”

“Dude! How come everybody’s yelling?”

The three of them froze. Lissy turned slowly to see a wide-eyed Fox standing on the staircase above them.

Book Review: Changeling Moon (Changeling #1) by Dani Harper

Changeling Moon (Changeling #1)
by Dani Harper
May 31st 2011 by Brava
368 pages
He roams the moonlit wilderness, his every sense and instinct on high alert. Changeling wolf Connor Macleod and his Pack have never feared anything — until the night human Zoey Tyler barely escapes a rogue werewolf’s vicious attack.

As the full moon approaches, Zoey has no idea of the changes that are coming, and only Connor can show her what she is, and help her master the wildness inside.

With her initiation into the Pack just days away and a terrifying predator on the loose, the tentative bonds of trust and tenderness are their only weapons against a force red in tooth, claw … and ultimate evil.

Dani, Dani, Dani! I need to send you an invoice for my time lost in this story! I could get nothing else done but read all day. Once I started the read, Zoey and Connor sucked me into their world and wouldn't let me go!

I liked everything about this book except that it ended. Zoey was about the perfect main female character. Believable actions and feelings. Connor was a dream mate (at least from the readers point of view!). If someone would have asked me (while I was reading this story) if I wanted to be a Changling, I would have begged them to let me join their ranks as long as I could live in their community and be part of their pack. No regrets..ha.

Each character added to the fantasy with their humor, strength and stories. There was danger, a little ugly violence, a little history of Changelings and the right amount of romance and hot bone melting sexy scenes to make the story flow effortlessly. I am not a prude but I enjoy a good story along with my "sexy" scenes and Dani delivered the perfect combination. I had a multitudes of emotion: anger, anxiety, "ahhhh" feelings and of course lustful thoughts.

Well done Dani, Well done! I can't wait to pick up the next episode!

I give this read 5 "MINE" sheep!

Alpha Male Diner: Galen (Holiday Spirit) by Dani Harper + print giveaway

On the menu today: GALEN MCALLISTER, ghostly hero of
THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT
Your chef: Dani Harper
PS - for dessert, you’ll have a chance to win a paperback copy of this yuletide paranormal!

INGREDIENTS:
-Take 220 lbs. of hardworking man (you know, the kind that could portage a piano without breaking a sweat…)

-Add golden brown eyes. Must be capable of one helluva glare, knee-weakening seduction, or irreverent mischief.

-Blend in equal parts courage, humor, and PURE sex appeal (No substitutions!) Combine with a heart that’s true, and don’t forget a generous dollop of tenderness.

-Season with boldness, a tendency to run towards danger, and most of all, an overwhelming desire to protect others at all costs.

-Bind strongly with an ancient curse.

-Fold in an air of mystery due to the dark hoodie he always wears. (It’s so unfair. Ghosts—even ones that aren’t dead—don’t get to choose their outfits.)

-Marinate with determination, and the ability to innovate whenever physical actions are called for.

-Braise at high heat until steaming.

(Chef’s tip: This dish is best served in the shower!)

TASTE TEST:
“Wait, you carried me? That’s how I got to bed?” Most women would find that endearing, romantic, even exciting—and she might too if Galen was inside his big strong physical body. Given his current state, however, Kerri found herself more appalled than anything.

Galen seemed unaware of any problem. “I didn’t want to leave you sleeping at your desk. Well, technically, you were sleeping on your keyboard. What kind of man would I be if I let you wake up with square marks on your face?”

“You. Carried. Me. All the way up the stairs?”

His brow furrowed in puzzlement. “Yeah, well, firefighter here.”

“Yeah, well, you didn’t exactly use your firefighter muscles to do it. I’d have some faith in those! For heaven’s sake, didn’t Everett say something? He must have seen you carrying me.”

“Sure he did. He warned me not to bang your head on the newel post at the top of the landing.”

“Don’t bang my head? That’s all?” She was stunned. Her friend and roommate was not just protective but often overly so. What the hell?

“You have to admit it was pretty good advice. And I did get you to your room without a hitch.”

“Why didn’t you just put me on the couch?” That much she could probably have handled.

“I thought of that. But you were so tired, I figured you’d rest better in your own bed. And it worked, right?”

She put the heel of her hand to her forehead, searching for words. “You’re so not getting this. Not a happy camper, here. I’m really uncomfortable with the idea of being levitated in my sleep!”

“I would never let you fall,” he said solemnly.

Kerri believed him, but he was missing the point. “This is about boundaries, mister.” She pointed her finger at him. “Do not take matters into your own hands. Do. Not. Levitate. Me. I know you meant well, but if I’m asleep on a bed of goddamn nails, just leave me there. Okay?”

“You’re not afraid of heights, are you?”

She stared at him for several seconds, then mentally threw up her hands and headed to the kitchen without another word. It took two cups of coffee before her brain cleared and she felt like a functional human being. She was contemplating a third when Galen appeared at last. To his credit, he looked somewhat contrite.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I get where you’re coming from now. Honest, I didn’t think it through. Didn’t even think about boundaries and shit, but I should have. From now on, I promise not to float you anywhere without prior written permission.”

She studied his face, but there was no trace of humor in his expression. In fact he looked, well, kind of adorable really, as he tried to apologize. She’d have to be made of stone to resist those golden-brown eyes…even if her inner voice was making fun of her for being such a softy. “Well, I guess I get where you’re coming from too,” she said at last. “You were just trying to make me more comfortable.” It was easy to picture any one of her older brothers doing the same. In fact, wasn’t that a guy thing, to simply see a need and fix it without worrying about all the little social nuances involved? “I’m sorry if it seems like I’m overreacting. But how I feel is how I feel.”

He nodded. “So we’re good?”

“Yeah, we’re good. Especially after that incredible sandwich you left me,” she said, and grinned as his face lit up. “I admit I ate the whole darn thing before I came downstairs. You’re a pretty good cook. And there’s this too.” She raised her empty cup.

“So my clever master plan to become indispensable is working. You have to forgive me or you won’t get any more of my coffee!” he teased.

Kerri fired a potholder at his head, hitting him right between the eyes—

Except that the potholder sailed on through until it landed on the other side of the kitchen. Galen blinked in surprise, and Kerri began to laugh. After a moment, he joined her. And there it was again, that strong sweet connection that throbbed with a heartbeat all its own. The space between them evaporated and it seemed the most natural of things to find her face close to his. He smiled, and stroked a finger over her temple, drawing away a wild curl. The connection created that odd little electrical tingle she’d felt before, and suddenly she wanted to feel that on her lips. She tipped up her face just as Everett stuck his head into the doorway.

“Your aunt just drove up!” he announced, and she practically jumped away from Galen like a guilty teenager. “Oh and Waldo is scratching at the door to the office. Got himself shut in again.”

The man beside her silently smacked his forehead. “Damn, I forgot him. He was sound asleep.”

“He’s usually sound asleep. He’s a pug—it’s his natural state,” said Kerri, straightening her clothes as if she really had been wrapped in Galen’s arms. Her pulse was hammering behind her ribs and her heartbeat pulsed in her ears. Holy cow, if I can get this wound up just wanting to kiss him, what will it be like if I really do? She ignored her inner voice that insisted she had no business thinking—or doing—any such thing, but she had to work harder to ignore the hot ache inside that wanted to pick up right where they left off…

And keep on going.

Guest Reviewers Toby the Pug and Queenie the Pug, co-owners of author Dani Harper (who may or may not get a word in edgewise)

QUEENIE – “First off, I’d like to express our appreciation to I Smell Sheep for having the good sense to bring in experts to review this book. As pugs ourselves, we’re able to provide readers with the ultimate perspective on the latest volume of BATTLEPUG.”

TOBY – “I wanted to say that! I’m the one who’s done a review before, so I should get to talk FIRST!”

QUEENIE - “Pfft! I’m more than twice your age, so I have seniority. Plus we’re in a hurry, because it’s HALFTIME, people! This is already the THIRD of five planned books.”

TOBY – “Five? Only five?” *counts on his front toes* “Um, um, Volume 1 was “Blood and Drool”, and, um, Volume 2 was “This Savage Bone”. And so this one makes, um, three – OMIGOSH THERE’S ONLY TWO TOES LEFT!” *runs in panicked circles*

Dani Harper*clears throat* “Mike Norton is Battlepug’s creator, writer and artist. And he’s won both an Eisner Award and a Harvey Award for this webcomic.”

QUEENIE – “That’s because there are pugs in the story, of course. You’d think more writers would take the hint. Why, if a pug had been written into the script for The Lone Ranger, it would have pushed the movie into Oscar territory.”

TOBY – “I’ll bet the awards don’t matter to Mr. Norton. He probably created Battlepug because it’s FUN.”

Dani Harper – “He’s certainly very talented. The story keeps rolling out zany surprises as it reveals more about the characters. And the quality of the artwork continues to be amazing.”

QUEENIE – “Pugs are excellent subjects. Including them elevates practically anything into an art form and—”

TOBY – “I have a Battlepug t-shirt!”

QUEENIE – “I keep telling you it’s for people – that’s why it doesn’t fit right. And stop interrupting me.”

TOBY – “Stop being bossy. I told you, I’m the one who’s reviewed before, so I get to talk! Battlepug is about a barbarian on a quest to find the villain who destroyed his people. And instead of a horse, he rides a giant noble pug –

QUEENIE – “Did you notice that nobody knows the name of the warrior?”

TOBY – “But we know the name of the pug! That’s the important part. He’s big and brave and his name is Sprinkles! And he has a mighty battle cry: BRAP! BRAP! BRAP! BRAP!” *leaps wildly across the furniture*

QUEENIE – “And we know the names of the friends that the warrior and his pug have made along the way – “

TOBY*still bounding along the top of the couch* “BRAP! BRAP! BRAP!”

QUEENIE – “There’s the old man, Scribbly, and the little girl, Bryony, and the swordmaster, Black Sasha.”

TOBY*panting* “And the best thing of all? The BESTEST thing? Sprinkles isn’t the only pug!”

Dani Harper – “That’s true. The whole story is being woven by a voluptuous girl named Moll who seems to be a prisoner in a high tower. She never wears anything except her henna tattoos and her only companions are a French bulldog named Colfax, and a pug named Mingo.”

TOBY – “I like Mingo. Colfax is a meanie.”

QUEENIE – “You said that last time. I read your review.”

TOBY – “Well, it’s even more true now. But there’s way cool stuff in this book too. The Warrior and his faithful Battlepug are up against this guy with a whole army of skeletons, and then the monster weasels come! And you’ve got to see the Skull Monkey!“

QUEENIE – “Let’s not forget there are some truly profound lessons in this story about magic and the importance of keeping the balance.”

TOBY – “And then we learn about PILLOWS! I had no idea they were so dangerous!”

QUEENIE – “Riiight.” *hides a pillow behind her back* “But let’s not give everything away – we don’t want to spoil it for the readers.”

Dani Harper – “I think it’s safe to say this book contains a critical turning point for the Warrior. He suddenly realizes that his desire for revenge isn’t the most important thing anymore.”

TOBY – “And then there was the gigantic – and then, BAM, the— the— fuzzy…wanna…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.”

QUEENIE *removes pillow from Toby’s face* “I SAID we weren’t going to give away the story!”

Dani Harper*confiscates pillow* “Ahem. We need to tell people that they can Like Battlepug on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Battlepug-The-Web-Comic/123886081014933. And if they want to read the strip as it’s created, they can check out Mr. Norton’s commentary and maybe even shop in the Battlepug store at http://battlepug.com/*shakes Toby awake*

TOBY – “Wha – what? Where were we?”

Dani Harper*whispering* “It’s time for the rating, give the rating!”

TOBY – “Four thumbs up!”

QUEENIE – “I knew he wouldn’t do it right. We’re on I Smell Sheep – they don’t use thumbs! And why isn’t it five? The book’s got TWO pugs! That puts it practically off the scale.”

Dani Harper – “Sorry, but we’ve had this conversation before. It’s not fair to non-pugs, and we want to be known as balanced reviewers.”

TOBY – “Yeah!” *sticks tongue out at Queenie* “So it gets four ‘who’s a giant dead skull monkey killer?’ sheep!” *whispers* “But pugs will know it’s really worth a five, right?”

Dani Harper and QUEENIE – “Right!”
